  • In this video, I show you how you can build your own bicycle and hiking trailer with bamboo. It's a step by step guide to making connections and joints with bamboo. You can also use this type of connection for other builds such as bicycles or other bamboo structures.
    Parts used for this build:
    - Burley Hitch www.amazon.com...
    - Swivel Tube Clamp (from local hardware dealer ø40mm)
    - 16'' wheels www.wandamigo.... (or similar)
    - Quick release axles (matching the wheel's hub)
    - Aluminium tube (matching the quick release axels diameter)
    - Female rod end www.amazon.com...
    - Threaded rod (matching thread of female rod end)
Leave any comments and questions below. Thank you very much for watching!

Thanks for posting this. I made one based on this video. I bought a secondhand trailer and cut off the axle and used the wheels (£40). I used cotton cloth strips and epoxy to wrap the joints. Couldn't find the connectors you used so made something myself. It's done a 160mile test so all looks good. Cheers

Wow. That is a great given that the mass produced hiking trailers cost like 400 dollars, even more if it has more options.

Thanks. After seeing this, I made one to carry my baritone saxophone. Three years later, I use it every week. I couldn't find a source here in Canada for those locking angle clamps - but salvaged a big nylon one from a car's bike carrier.🎷

I grow bamboo and make musical instruments out of the material. This is a wonderful video, and a great idea. Perhaps you purchased your bamboo from a purveyor who had already processed the bamboo with organic salts, and so forth, so that the bamboo will not be destroyed by mold. But you might want to mention to your viewers that the bamboo needs to be clean absolutely on the inside: Generally, two formulas are used: the boric acid/borax in a 1:1.5 ratio and the boric acid/borax/sodium dichromate in a 2:2:0.5 ratio, equivalent to 4-5% concentration, and is preferred for indoor applications.

Nice design. With the frame being made of the short bamboo sections plus joins, seems like it would be much easier to repair than a metal, welded frame.

Imagine re-enforcing the insides of your right angle joints after they are epoxied together
Possibly drill a fill hole on one and an overflow hole on the other
Then clamp the joint in a vise with the point of the joint down and the holes above so they are accessible for filling the hollow inside of the joint
Use another epoxy that has a more fluid flowable texture until it fills the joint and flows out the other overflow hole
Then there will be an internal one piece of hard epoxy glued to the insides creating a permanent one piece right angle plug
I like Your use of Bamboo

Nice design and build ! I was impressed at how nice your miteed joints came out after. Sanding The carbo Fiber einforcement is also a nice looking contrast as well I was a avid hiker for many years and your set up looks like a great idea unfortunately for me a Traumatic Brain injury. Have been changed due to needing special equipment to walk now but one never knows what the future may bring especially that in the medical feild they are inventing so much so quickly BTW i was a big bike rider as well but the Brain injury has also compromised my balance as well and at the moment i am only riding Stationary bikes for safety

Really great video! Thank u for the info. I've watched several and NO ONE is using A) bamboo. (I LOVE BAMBOO..not only for all the reasons you mentioned ..that's its very durable, lightweight) but also, never have i seen bug problems with it, but major plus is that bamboo grows like wild fire. It's the fastest live growing structural material there is. Replanting? It's growing ALL the time. It is therefore very available but because it has to be shipped if you're building a house with it (yes, I've seen at least 2 massive homes made of it), it's VERY expensive. Small quantites...quite affordable! :)

If you could make a folding bike, and with the right pack, you could strap the bike to the trailer when hiking over the terrain is best, and when you need to go into places you don't want to leave yout stuff outside, you cand cary the pack with the trailer and the folded bike on it as a back pack...

BOB Ibex VS bamboo!! ) thnx ;)
