  • Building on the success of the Urban Hawker concept in New York City, Singapore food sellers there now want to take their local dishes across America. At least a quarter of the operators plan to set up shop in other states like California.

Kudos to KF Seetoh and Urban Hawker! I remember seeing many salty comments(especially our always salty neighbor) when it first opened with some even saying it won't last. Glad to see its still thriving.

In Sg, both the hawkers and customers get squeezed. Where does the profit go to? In other countries, the hawkers reap more of the profit though the customers pay more. In Sg, when hawkers increase the price, the landlords and govt agencies will try, in one way or another, to share the bacon. It is a vicious cycle in Sg. The customers will end up pay more and more but the problem is still there. The hawkers are not reaping more even though they may be charging more. It is the landlords and govt agencies laughing their way to the bank. This is why the customers are complaining.

That looks more like a food court than a hawker centre...

That's why the name is Urban Hawker not Hawker Food Centre.

@@xijinpig7978 i think its more of the rent. New york rent prices are quite unreasonable.

@@singaporeseaslugs1393 NYC labor is expensive because they have unions and minimal wages. NYC income taxes are higher than Singapore.
The only thing these local hawkers think of is pricing but they fail to factor in expenses.

It is not good to charge premium for SGD$3 chicken rice to become USD13.

Learn from the fast food biz. Employ the old aged 80s, the students aged 14, pay them $4 an hour. Create stable job opportunities, learning opportunities. Then earn big bucks. Ya. I an trying to be sarcastic.

How are you going to pay rent selling Malay cuisine?
Chinese Cuisine can command higher prices because of prestige.
    Look at Local prices.
Malay stores can charge $ 400 for pax of 2?
    No way!
    Can chinese food do it?
    Yes!
