Like "oh don't piss that guy off, he'll rear his crab at your house. He's been rearing it at mine every day now!"
I remember crab hunting years ago and seeing these burrows up close. We found one crab and he ran down into a bigger burrow. A few seconds later he backed out and collapsed, we picked him up and washed him off before realising a bigger crab chopped him in half. I think they’re very grateful for these homes lol
Wow! This species of Crab is quite Large! Good to know on how to grow our own foods in case there is another Major Movement Control Order! ( MCO ) ... Thank You So Much CNA for these short but educational tutorials ... 😊🙏
I admire those viewers who see that this is only good when treated as a hobby. I have been keeping fish in several aquaria and ponds at home and the cost involved is much more expensive than driving to and from and buying at the wet market. 😅
Brilliant man…he memorized the yabbie plan and accommodated it for crabs years later. And it’s a totally enclosed system with the exterior pond and a UV sterilizing system. This is the animal version of ‘vertical farming.’ Great marketing….i like how he compares a crab with a fish. The only issue is anthropomorphizing the crab and saying it’s ‘happy’ when the algae grows back and blocks out the sunlight. Crabs don’t get happy. Crabs are crabs.
"Happy" is a stretch. I do think that animals feel "comfort" though. Most are very sensitive to certain environmental factors that you would think shouldn't physically affect them.
When I saw the video title I misread it as 'man who wears crabs'. I was very curious about how he wears them. As shoes? As a hat? I'm very disappointed to discover he doesn't actually wear crabs.
Does the plastic crab condo break down over time in the saltwater? Curious to know if the crab meat ends up being infused with micro-plastics the same way as human organs do from consuming bottled water microplastics. If that's the case, I'll take my chances on ocean farmed food.
This is very important because he can help with restoration of the blue crabs of the Caribbean and in the north Atlantic ocean for their population has dropped he should do online classes to spread this important message
First of all, hatchery is where the berried crabs hatch. From Zoea 1,2,3,4,5 and becomes megalopa and moult into instar which resembles a crab. Further moulting into instar2,3 and we sold to farmers whom do the growout in ponds. Crab condo mainly for fattening or soft shell crab production. Water were recycle to keep the ammonia, nitrite down. Cleaning of uneaten feed needs to be done daily to prevent bacterial bulidup esp gram negative. Btw, I have a crab hatchery and growout pond and supply crablets to farmers too. General, read up the lifecycle of crab.
Cool hobby. But if its for food, is it cheaper to do this taking into account the total costs (electricity, the boxes, water bill?, cleaning equipment and lab chemiclas for the various water quality checks etc versus going to East coast park or wherever and just buying a crab for your chilli?
I like catching them or buying them. Growing them takes too long and the amount of money put into growing them might cost more than the crabs themselves.
Now this fella charges a fee teaching others. Next gov will check if he got a legit business entity and whether he has the necessary permits to have a mini crab farm in his home. Just a matter of time, his students also will be investigated.
I'm all for food self-reliance, but this ain't it. Sorry, but that's not a crab condo - that's a crab prison. 36 months is a long time to spend in a small plastic box. This is battery farming, the crab version. But I doubt animal welfare is a big concern around there.
it's not like growing methon, it's just a fattening, the crablets grow for a long time in that system, sometimes up to 6-7 months, unlike in the pond which takes up to 4-5 months to get, which amounts to two pounds, If you plan to do it yourself, the feeding system should be separately in boxes, also consider energy costs, maintenance, food that can be bought in the market and where you can buy thin or crablets, and the mudcrab's immortality rate is 80-90%, and it depends on how you do maintain their health and environmental stress etc, mudcrabs are not easy to care for, but it's worth a try
