This was a ship that I loved, and it made me so happy that they later made Seven cannonically sapphic. :) Of course, they had to try and rush a stupid relationship with Chakotay just to put an end to this whole sapphic speculation about Janeway and Seven.
There was zero chemistry between 7 and Chakotey. In the novel written about after they got back to earth, they were broken up immediately 😂
@@melodiefrances3898
Agreed. They never made sense. Would have made more sense for Seven to be with the doc. At least he could go into her cortical implant. I’m sure they could have made that a way he would feel real.
@@melodiefrances3898In picard I think seven mentions they were actually married, but only for a short time.
@@kbanghart I missed that!
@@melodiefrances3898 well, now I'm not sure bc it's been a minute since I saw the show.
By far, Janeway is my favorite StarTrek Captain, vulnerable, witty and tough. . I found her and Seven's interactions and story to be intense and suggestive, as were Janeway's looks and demeanor.
I had heard rumblings from sapphic Star Trek stans on Twitter about this twosome. And absolutely, there is certainly beautiful chemistry between them
It also has to be a very sweet victory for OG Seven stans that the more recent formation of Star Trek (Picard), has explicitly allowed Seven to have a female love interest (Raffi)🙌
And my understanding is that this development was greatly encouraged by Jerri Ryan, who plays Seven☕️🙌
I almost spontaneously combusted during Picard when her relationship with Raffi was revealed. I really hope they do the spin-off and that both are in it.
@@booberfraggle3839They are so hot together
This show was so important to me in my gaybe days. Not just because the subtext was as main text as Xena. But also cause 7 is neurodivergant coded. So the show was like a hug.
Scene you missed is in dark frontier and the meeting room scene. That is so next level.
Also janeway always going up to cargo bay to watch seven sleep.
Thanks for additions! I'm not sure what meeting room scene you mean. Is it when Seven goes back in time in Relativity?
@@100percentshipper it’s been so long since I watched the show. I’m not sure. I really thought it was Dark frontier. When they are planning heist that gets seven kidnapped/ surrendered. There’s just so much tension to me in that staff room meeting.
@@belhanger8799 Oh yes, that is in Dark Frontier, when Seven begs Jane to let her remain on the away mission and then they stand close together and just look at each other. I used that clip in the video but didn't call it out specifically but it's FULL of tension for sure :)
Some great moments there. I wish they had given Seven that blue Starfleet uniform though instead of the catsuits. I hope she gets her own spinoff show now that Picard has wrapped up.
There is a reason why I watch this channel only now that the worst of Covid is over and basically dropping all other wlw content because of real life events taking up so much time. You really get it. All your ships work, you describe them well, and quite frankly, it’s really easy to get onto your wavelength.
Yes exactly, Janeway and Seven is my favorite ship after Xena and Gabriela. And as you said, if they were a man and a woman, the writers will definitely make them a couple.
Thanks for this video. I have nice memories there.
Xena and Gabrielle got married in a reincarnation episode. 😂 When Xena was a man and Gabrielle was a woman. Then Ares put Xena back in a female body. Gabrielle went back with Xena.
I really love the bond that janeway and seven had ❤
Their chemistry pours off the screen, no matter what anyone intended or wanted, or whatever the unhappy shenanigans that went on behind the scenes were. Art sometimes transcends the creators and this is the shippiest of freakin ships. Thanks for the wonderful recap. ❤
You've got this spot-on! Thanks for such a fabulous video.
Oh Jeri Ryan... be still my beating heart! She featured very prominently on a website I ran in the '90s, on which we shipped those two repeatedly. I vaguely remember something about an interview inwhich she refused to deny that there was more to their relationship, so I'm not surprised that she encouraged Seven's relationship with Raffi in Picard.
I love the idea of her not denying the J7 dynamic. I feel like Kate never intended it and would be dismissive, but who knows, maybe Jeri purposefully threw some subtext for us!
@@100percentshipper I wouldn't be at all surprised.
Forgot about them, now I'm remembering it well. It would have been a great story line if it was really a sapphic relationship. As always your appreciated.
I’m impressed with the research you did, so many details, and the sweet way you tell their story!
YES, a thousand times YES! I wasn’t sure in the beginning, but the more you rewatch their scenes, you realize there IS something else being communicated by the actresses’ scenes. Some people have suggested it has to do with their micro expressions, and Mulgrew’s flirtatious acting. But, everything changed between Janeway and Chakotay, when Seven came on to Voyager. She became Janeway’s obsession. Equinox 1 and 2 could be included, here. Janeway became incredibly angry at Ransom's betrayal, not just because of his actions that threatened her crew, but because HE KIDNAPPED SEVEN!! Chakotay and Tuvok accused her of becoming unhinged in that episode.
Thanks for additions! It's true, she did get a bit crazy like other times when Seven was in danger.
The thing that blows me away about the series finale, is that it's framed that: 1 Janeway wants to undo the pain she caused to others from the decision to do away with the Array in the pilot episode and 2 The driving factor behind that decision is that Seven is gone and this haunts her, sort of like the greatest wound of them all. She thus started to come up with the plan we saw in the series finale. So seriously, their connection is important to who Janeway is as a character, to say the least, if the series finale had to be framed in this way in order to complete the voyage home. So I hope if Paramount does a revival of live action Janeway, she and Seven have a story together.
I always saw this as an adoptive mother kind of relationship. The Borg Queen showdown felt like mothers fighting over the custody of a child to me. The bio mom who caused a lot of trauma through a domineering and dicatorial parenting method, and the adoptive mom who is trying to nurture with a gentler and more permissive parenting method.
I will admit however that I'm a child from a broken home who is ACE, so I'm looking through it with a certain lens. I can definitely see how it can be viewed through a queer lens and this vid makes a strong case. Great job!
I think there is room for both of our interpretations!
Not to name drop, but 100% XD
@@Scerttle 😂
I completely agree
J7 was my first puddle splash into reading fanfic back in the 00s. I was obsessed with ST:V. My best friend and I would watch hours of reruns comparing notes on the J7 subtext. Thanks for this vid!
Ah! Thank you for this vid ❤ made me want to read some j/7 fanfic like in the good old days 👵🏼
J7 is such a unique ship, and I absolutely adore them. I loved your video. Really well done!
The content I never knew I needed! 😆 🥰
Janeway clearly loves Seven and I can't blame her
I'm convinced. Thank you for this.
You're welcome :)
In real life kate mulgrew hated jerri ryan one time she viciously yelled at her the other actors on the show couldn't stand it when kate acted like that I had heard that kate did apologize to jerri but I wouldn't be surprised if these ever work together I wouldn't
Yes, it was such a shame that it was like that. I heard some pretty awful stories about her not allowing bathroom breaks to be long enough for Jeri to get out of that damned suit! Still, shows what phenomenal actors they are.
@@booberfraggle3839 yep that's true
She said they were trying to make the show more "sexy" and she didn't want it to go in that direction and resisted it. So in the third season they brought in Ryan's character to do all the sexy stuff Mulgrew was resisting, so she was mad the character existed.
@@djin81 still that's no excuse for the way kate treated jerri
I’m not familiar with this TV show, but never too late… great content as always 💖
You definitely should check out the show
@@angelaholmes8888 I will
If you only want to watch the Janeway/Seven stuff, I'd say watch the pilot episode to get the context, then skip to the finale of season 3 when Seven is introduced. I personally enjoyed the whole show so I watch the whole thing. Happy watching, and let me know what you think!
@@100percentshipper Thanks for the advice, I’ll do just that and who knows, ima enjoy the whole thing
Thank you so much for your answer, I love your channel
you are for real shipping hard on this one.
I sure am
Look at the love in Janeway's eyes in the first bit. J /7 love love love
No mention of 7 of 9's kiss with Raffi at the end of "Star Trek: Picard" last year?
Janeway and Seven had an unspoken "tension". Whether or not they ever did anything only them knows😉
Genuinely kinda shocking to learn about the issues between the actresses behind the scenes. Absolutely does not come across in the show at all.
Love your interpretation. LGBTQ+ representation is the one thing the earlier shows missed, wish they had the courage back then like they have now.
Ok, I know we should be eloquent and insightful, but…
First episode showcased is 6x9? Nice
Makes me wonder what Kate Mulgrew thinks about all this?
I feel like I've seen q&A's where she has more or less said she doesn't agree or veers the convos in a different direction. Not exactly dismissive but certainly not encouraging of that reading. If anyone knows, would love to hear!
😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 bad bass man
Didn't we always crave for that ... ? 😅But a least we have a bisexual Seven in "Picard" where she finally kisses a girl
Yep... they should have done this
Back in the day Kate Mulgrew lobbied for a gay character on the show. The pairing of Janeway and Seven was definitely a topic among fans then (Mulgrew even calls it out in some interviews). Unfortunately the producer was a known homophobe, but think of the possibilities if Voyager came out today!
That's very cool to know. I'd like to think that they would have totally ended up together if it was made today!
Never understood why there wasn’t any LBGTQ representation. They’re in the future for fuck sakes. Supposedly enlightened and all that shit.
It's something a lot of the writers wanted. Ira Behr (writer for deep space nine) has said he considers It a failure that they didn't have proper queer representation.
Unfortunately a lot of why they didn't is likely down to studio interference, and of course Rick Berman being the worst.
I always felt the dichotomy between 24th Century (?) freedoms combined with the barriers of 20th/21st century reserve endemic on screen. Thank God that she allows us to imagine what perfect might look(s) like ~ I'm away and dreaming ❤😂
Very simple. Rick Berman didn’t want any. You can goggle this.
Did they ever kiss?
Sadly not.
Oh hell no! They are not a couple. This is just fandom nonsense. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Huge ST fan, nope, no. Their bond was more like a mother & daughter. Janeway & Chakotay were more likely a secret couple. I can go through & discount all these scenes but it’s enough to just say, “no, that’s not what is happening.”
I have watched the series over 5 times.
Sounds like the mother wants to die for the daughter so she can be happy with her husband. Then again ST: Picard sank that ship.
I'm gay and I can tell you none of that was gay it was a relationship between a mother and a rebellious daughter.
A lot of this can just be explained by 7 having pretty privilege, no real need for janeway to be crushing on her. But I'm ok with them gayin so whatever.
It is hard to believe but you can love a persom that is not family without being physically attracted to them.
All these connections are valid, but misread as sapphic. The Janeway/Seven connection has always been mother/daughter. Sorry my sapphic sisters,
I know nothing about this show but how? That may have been the intention but it doesn’t feel like it from these clips. They’re too young and good looking lol
I disagree. It was definitely that at the start but I think it became so much more than that for them both.
@residentjess young and good looking does not = lesbian.😄 Trust me, I've known some ugly young dykes in my day. Heck, I've been accused of being one.🤣 But if you look at it objectively, the caring Janeway shows would be the same a mother would show for her child. Wouldn't a mother sacrifice everything for her child? Especially one who had previously given everything only to duty? I know I would. As for Seven, of course she would want to please Janeway. She was the only mother she had left. She was, what, 6 when she was assimilated? Janeway was the mother she needed. That never changed.
Don't get me wrong. I am over the moon Seven is gay in Picard and beyond. I hated the way they outfitted her (and other female ST characters) for the male gaze. To me, that the the biggest flaw in the entire ST universe. But I just don't get any romantic tension between Janeway and Seven at all.
@@mswildi I do see your point but she got so jealous and there were loads of looks that I recall noting at the time. Anyway,we'll agree to disagree. Totally agree with what you said about ST and the male gaze.
Sez you.
You are gonna have to gloss over the fact that Kate Mulgrew despised Jeri Ryan for *years* because Ryan was hooking up with one of the producers and getting preferential treatment because of that. Because if you don’t ignore it (which they have both talked and written about), then all this shipping falls apart quickly.
Kate and Jeri's relationship is not relevant to the narrative between Seven and Janeway so I'm not ignoring it. If anything it contributed to their chemistry on screen!
So what! Can't a show just be good without people wondering who is sleeping in who's bed?
Why does that bother you so much? You don't have to interpret it that way if you don't want to but I and a lot of others do.
@@100percentshipper How do you take "bother" from my comment? I'm not bothered; it's an observation followed by a commentary on what people do. My point is that this show is good enough without subverting beyond the main stories. Show characters should be treated like real people. In real life, no one goes around wondering who their neighbors are sleeping with, so why should people wonder this about TV show characters. As a society, we're supposed to be rising above these identifying gender issues, but when it comes to TV shows or movies, we revert back to gossipy children who somehow forgot about gender tolerance and privacy. It doesn't bother me, it's a question and this is social media.
@@RumbleFish69 You do seemed bothered given you comments. It's natural to identify with stories in fiction that speak to a person's lived experience, that's all that's happening here. Some of us are queer and saw in Janeway and Seven a potential at a time when there was hardly anything on TV to represent us. Representation matters and when none is given we'll read into stories that could, like this one. If this interpretation doesn't speak to you, then it doesn't and that's fine. God bless.
@100percentshipper You can identify "bothered" by text and words? What other magical powers do you possess? I actually find this hilarious; truth be told. I'm definitely not bothered. Sure, go ahead and think whatever you like. Me, I like a good story, and how people identify in these stories is also fine. It is the focus, like in this video, which is the bigger concern. Who cares about the gayest moments between two people. I mean, it's not like you put out a video on the most "hetero" moments of two people...have you? I have maintained throughout this exchange that people, like you, fixate on something that is not important or germane to the story. Whoever someone decides to bring into their bedrooms is not even secondary to any story. Sex doesn't sell. It is an obsession people have for some odd reason. It is the stuff of gossip and unnecessary controversy. Unnecessary, because it's capable of negativity when it's no one's business to gain with. Say whatever you like. I think I'm done here.
Gayest and most INCESTUOUS moments. Since Janeway is essentially Seven's human form mother, whilst the Borg Queen is Seven's Borg Mother.
Janeway looked like she wanted to make out with everyone
