[SHOT Show 2019] Bond Bullpup 9L: A Subcompact with a Glock 19 Length Barrel!

  • James speaks with Bond Arms about the longer version of the Bullpup, the Bullpup 9L.
    Description from The Firearm Blog: Even with the longer slide, frame and barrel, the Bullpup9L has an overall length of 6″ which is similar to many modern subcompact concealed carry pistols. However, the main advantage of this pistol is in its barrel length. Because of its “bullpup” design (with the barrel telescoping over the magazine) the Bullpup9L has a 4.25″ barrel! Imagine a pistol of Glock 43 size but packing a barrel almost as long as the Glock 17 barrel or slightly longer than the Glock 19 barrel.
    The Bullpup9L pistol also features an accessory rail on the dust cover portion of the frame. The overall weight of this pistol is 19 oz and it is .96″ thick. I think if they did manage to fix the original Boberg pistol issues, then this gun can be an attractive concealed carry choice. The MSRP of Bullpup9L is yet to be determined.

    I wonder if bond arms would entertain the idea of putting the Boberg action in a target pistol, having 6" barrel and double stack 9mm. I want to see just how shootable and accurate the design is on a competition level. They can price them at around $3k and it would still be comparable to high-end 1911's.

    • @TheSuburban15

      Sounds good to me

    • @Adam31778
      @Adam31778 5 років тому +4

      I don't know... That double action trigger will throw off your shot more than the tiltibg barrel would. Trigger control is normally more important than mechanical accuracy.

    • @mechpade
      @mechpade 5 років тому +2

      @@Adam31778 My point is to have the action see as much trigger time with speed and accuracy practice. The pistol's reliability, speed, and accuracy would be showcased for Bond Arms (increasing live data for improvements) and we, the consumers, can see public records of the guns performance. Win-win!
      As for the long DOA trigger, I'm not sure if there are tricks to fix that, but I'm sure Bond knows a thing or two.

    • @reignick1133
      @reignick1133 5 років тому +3

      The accuracy question is one easily answered: As the Bond Arms bullpup pistol uses a rotating barrel and the internal dimensions/tolerances are fairly tight it's accuracy *Potential* would be similar to a Beretta PX4 Storm or a decent 1911. Though the double action trigger would not be anywhere near as nice as the 1911's stock single action only trigger or anywhere close to a finely tuned/ polished match 1911's trigger.

    • @reignick1133
      @reignick1133 5 років тому +2

      @@Adam31778 a shooter properly trained on a double action trigger will perform just fine. Single action can be preferred for a lot of shooters as the learning curve is far smoother but at the end of the day the statement "It's the Indian, not the arrow" comes to mind.
      In short, if you're just passable with double action exclusively you're likely to throw a shot when faced with a single action trigger or striker fired sidearm, if you're just barely passable with a single action or striker fired trigger, you're going to SUCK with a double action only firearm. The only remedy for either is *Practice.* Owning a piano does not make one a skilled musician, owning a nice firearm does not make one a competent shooter.

They even honor warranties on existing Boberg guns for people to send in if they need to be upgraded or fixed. I did have pretty good luck shooting the .45 ACP Boberg once though... Yup, I had a chance to buy a Boberg but unfortunately they have started to go collector prices for the ones that run. Stacking tolerances are a real bitch and I’m super glad Bond Arms have taken over the design and now we will be able to have the gun Boberg always wanted to make. I wonder if Hudson is gonna go the same way, it’s almost impossible for the the Mark Serbu’s of the world and absolutely impossible for the Royal Nonsuch’s even with Mark’s help.

    • @joshualance6005

      The original is not as good the boberg had issues with reliability due to the 3 part design of the cam path barrel and slide the cam path had to be greased but the bond arms nickle boron coated the interior that way regular oil would work and if ran dry would still function

    He mentioned the P365 but I don't see how the Bullpup will be competitive with the P365 unless it's double-stack and has a frame made of a polymer or lightweight aluminum or alloy. For a given rounds count the P365 is lighter with a shorter grip and higher rounds capacity. If they could the specs close I'd rather buy the Bullpup due to the extra barrel length. I love the idea of suppressing the short version, but I also like the frame-mounted accessory capability of the new longer version, for mounting a flashlight.

    It doesn't increase the sight radius. The length of the slide sets the sight radius no matter the length of the barrel contained within. Maybe it was a slip up but he kept piling the reasons on why it was better and he couldn't help himself.

      Nature will ALWAYS find a way to design a better fool, though with Alexandria Occassio Cortez elected I pray that nature has hit the zenith of that endeavor. ( No one wants a fool of that magnitude as that is indeed some high yield munitions grade stupid.)

    Too bad it didn’t fly well, i guess the higher price and the issues known when before bond arms buy it were two decisive things why people didn’t have much interest. The options is just find a used one and test fire well for reliability

    Very cool concept, although he lost me a bit when he said it was DAO, and then lost me the rest of the way at $1099.
    I don't see this as satisfying a huge demand in the market. When it comes to single-stack 9mm carry pistols, most people are happy with the accuracy and mag capacity of their G43, PPS or Shield and aren't willing to pay nearly double the price for slight improvement.

    • @SSPspaz
      @SSPspaz 5 років тому

      anony moose, oh I didn't mean to imply that there aren't any positives going for this gun. Sure there are. I only meant that I don't see it filling some huge need in the market. It'd be different if this came out 5 years ago before a slew of single-stack 9mm pistols hit the market. But now, between the Glock 43, Walther PPS and the M&P Shield, I don't think most people will pay double the price for minor improvements. As a result, this will never be more than a niche product.

    technically arent most auto pistols bullpup's since by and large the action is behind the trigger group?

    • @paulthecpa2717
      @paulthecpa2717 5 років тому

      starterpack295 Bullpup traditionally has action, feed, and magazine FAR behind trigger group. We can argue that most semi autos have magazines and the action to the rear of the troop, but the feed is typically in front of or directly above the trigger group. This particular gun has the feed in the furthest rear point of the gun. Something they didn’t mention, which is present in the original 9 mm version is that the bullets are PULLED from the back of the mag, as the slide travels backwards, then pushed forward into the chamber. Versus standard semi auto loading that strips a round off the top as the slide moves forward into battery. Apparently that pulling motion has required keeping a list of ammo that will work in these guns. Some ammo becomes separated i.e. the case separates from the projectile, during the loading process.

    Bullpups make sense for rifles because you need to get in/out of vehicles or close quarters. Barrel length doesnt matter for concealed carry (or at least not as much as handle length). So with a limited 7+1 capacity and a $1100 MSRP…. What is the point?

    I hope its more reliable than the boberg. I had 2 different bobergs (long story) and had nothing but issues with them. Not just little issues, catastrophic failures. Sending the gun back to the manufacturer with a live round jammed in the action. Major peening issues. Pins falling out. Springs breaking. It was cool but clearly had some heat treating and parts supplier quality issues. Beyond all of the issues im hoping bond addressed it was a fantastic gun to carry. It was just utterly unreliable....
