My cat is about to turn 20. He's been losing weight for years and has been checked twice since he started. I was told they sometimes just get old and don't eat as much, but he's down to about 7 lbs. He was about 15 in his prime. Guess its time to have him checked for a third time. Poor old guy also has a tumor in the corner of his eye and nobody thinks he'll survive anesthesia to have it removed.

My cat used to weigh 18lbs 3 years ago then for a year he was 15 and in the past 12 mos he is down to 8.6lbs. My vets only have expensive solutions. I don’t have $3500 for a Diagnosis.

This helped me with my cat gaining weight, buy chicken heart, liver, and gizzard, prepare foods throughout the week and try to have them wean off of kibble as much as you can, I put a little bit of kibble, some eggs and stir it all up with the chopped liver, heart, and gizzards. search up raw cat food diets and try to learn from there, it also helped my old man with his bowel issues

Same, my cat is seventeen and I just got back the same thing. We got him eating wet food instead of kibble. But, he's definitely not eating as much he may even be lethargic.

If you see your cat loosing weight at around 12-15 years, hyperthyroidism, kidney failure or diabetes is probably the culprit. The choice then becomes yours as to how much you want to spend on your cat to possibly extend his life expectancy. All tests and treatments cost money. There is no guarantee that treatment will work without side effects. There is no telling how much longer the cat will live even the ailment is correctly diagnosed and treated. A veterinary clinic is a business. They are generally staffed by good, caring, animal loving people who are trying to make a decent living. Cats will live without vets. Vets will not live without cats. There are many kittens and other healthy cats looking for homes. The choice is yours.

      It’s not ALWAYS the culprit

Good advice, we love our animals but trying to extend the inevitable with tons of money is not fair to you or your pet. Most drugs do harm to other organs so your trading one problem and unfortunately creating another problem. The paper that comes with the drug explaining all the horrible side effects is not in black and white for no reason at all. Believe what you read not what the Vets telling you. Because this is a money-making business.

I was just thinking about this. I lost one of my cats four years ago. I took him to the vet, & spent thousands of dollars, & he still passed away. They were charging me to keep him for three days & they knew he was dying. It was some type of disease that took his breath in the end. He died gasping for air 😢. I wish I had just put him to sleep 😢, instead of listening to those damn vets. And I've been going to them for years. But he was loved to the end.
Now his brother is sick & rapidly losing weight . He has an appointment in a few days at another vet clinic. I love my fur babies so much. I hope they can save him.😢👏🏿

Vets will take advantage of the love that you have for your cat. At the end of the day it’s your cat that dies not theirs. I am facing the end of live with my 19 year old cat now and I am having a hard time with it. Very confusing as to what to do. A trip to the vet is very traumatic and the last time it took our cat 2 weeks to get back to normal. I don’t want to be bilked out of money but at the same time I want to do everything I can. She has a good appetite but is losing weight. She broke her leg up close to her hip a few years ago and I know that is bothering her. According to the vet she is going blind. She is on a special purina food for her kidneys. The vet did a close to $600.00 thyroid surgery on her 2 years ago and I think the tumor on the thyroid is back. She has had 3 seizures. Actually I am thinking they were strokes because her right side was paralyzed briefly. I have actually started digging her grave. I am getting too old to dig it all at once so little by little I am digging it. This will be the last cat that I will have. It’s amazing at the expense involved in taking care of just one cat. The special food alone is not cheap. Some people don’t understand how hard it is losing a cat that has been with you for years. It’s like losing a family member. I want to thank you and the other people in this comment section. I’ve read this thread of comments and all have certainly helped. I realize that I am not the only person who has lost a pet.

You do lose muscle mass as you age. Which means you lose weight from age… no?

That’s how my cat has been for almost 2 decades. I always thought he was skinny so when I took him to the vet he was actually 9 pounds when he was 12 pounds almost 2 years ago

Sounds like Hyperthyroidism. Try a half teaspoon of olive oil in their wet food. This helps to soften hard stools making them easier to pass. Also at least two bowls of fresh water in the house. My senior girl is now on thyroid meds for life. She is 18 years and has made an improvement in a few months. The blood tests can be expensive. My Vet gives me a presciption so I can buy Thyronorm (UK) online which saves quite a bit. Good Luck.

Same with our 15 year old cat. She’s now 2.1kg extremely boney and lethargic yet eating like she’s never been fed, drinking excessive amounts of water and all blood works normal.
