- If you are asking the question "Why is my cat losing weight?" then you need to first decide if your cat is still eating normally, if they are actually eating more rapidly (or appear more hungry), or if your cat has stopped eating and appears unwell. For those cats that are still eating and appear otherwise well, the most common causes are the early stages of hyperthyroidism, diabetes, and IBD/cancer. If your cat is unwell (or even just drinking a lot more) then the same causes could have progressed but your vet will also consider other cat weight loss causes like kidney disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cancer, dental disease, pancreatitis, and other infections.
Getting your cat checked over early is more likely to result in successful treatment, and some of these conditions can be very successfully treated or even cured if caught in time.

So I should definitely take my cat to the doctor because she is less than a year and she is starting to have similar symptoms. This is really worrying me.

He needs to see a vet straight away. Cats can’t get something called fatty liver if they lose a lot of weight very quickly , especially if they were fat to start with, and this can be deadly
I have found the issue, he had a wound near his anus, and it's badly infected and very smells, he don't want to eat so he don't defecate because it hurts for him
I used to have a cat named boots he lived to be seventeen years old and he started to loose weight before he passed away in 1995. He was almost blind and he was purring and he hadn't purred in years and his eyes were like crying for real I tell you and anyway he came to me purring and I petted him and showed him to my dad well he is gone now but anyway daddy said he was dying and probably would go off and die to watch him close but he caught me off guard and he took off and I never did find his body to this day I searched for years he must have went a long way because I live in the country with mountains and like finding a needle in a haystack..he was a very big cat he was grey and had like white shoes on his front paws and the back were black all the way up almost..it only seems like yesterday to me I must be getting old.. bless you Dr. Alex you are my hero I've been telling everyone about your channel and how extremely smart you are

What if the bloodwork comes back fine, but my cat has still been so skinny for six months? I've even tried a special, raw cat food. Could she be depleted in vitamins and minerals?
same thing happened to me when they do blood test they don't check for cat AIDS also known as Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. that's a different blood test, have them check for that.

I just got home from a 2 months work trip and my cat is skin and bones and kind of lethargic. His muscles have seemed to disappear, spine bones almost poking thru the skin, just seems really uncomfortable. My 2-year-old cat is eating well, maybe slightly more, regular poops and activity level seem normal but she's suddenly losing weight quickly I noticed just in the last few days - I did just start adding a pumpkin probiotic powder a few months ago.. would that do it? I add 2 tablespoons or so of water to her food because she doesn't drink water. She does seem a little depressed/bored.

My cat who is now 18 has kidney disease. He got blood tested in April 2021 and his levels were better than before due to the special diet. The vet also mentioned that all of his other levels including blood glucose etc. was normal. However, at the end of March 2021 his 14 year old sister had to be euthanized. Since then he has not been eating normally and has lost a bit of weight. What can I do?

how about why a cat’s weight loss might have plateaued? my mom’s cat had been making great progress for a long time shedding off her excess pounds, but it seems to have slowed down now. should i tell my mom just to dedicate some more time to exercising the kitty?
It's not unusual for weight loss to plateau while there is still more weight to lose. The first step is to congratulate that any weight loss has happened because it is very hard to stay motivated and commited. Then double check that there have been no changes in diet, treats, or amount being given. Finally, increasing exercise with play will help, but often a slight reduction in food is needed, or a switch to a dedicated weight loss diet if there is still a lot of weight to shift.

My 2 year old kitten was diagnosed with anemia last week. Her Vet gave her Depo Medrol and advised us to mix Nutrive liquid in her food. She’s lost so much weight but are still eating, still plays a bit but noticed she’s been sleeping more. Her Vet advised us to come back in a week to monitor how she’s retaining or her body’s reaction to depo medrol. Is there anything else we can do to get her iron production up? We are desperate parents and hate to see a once energetic kitty deteriorate 😢
we don't normally need to worry about supplementing iron and low levels are not typically the cause of anemia. Anemia in and of itself isn't a diagnosis, it is a symptom of an underlying disease, the possibilities which can broadly be split into 3 categories: blood loss (such as intestinal ulceration), red blood cell destruction (such as parasites or immune dysfunction), and a lack of red blood cell production (such as chronic disease or bone marrow cancers). The treatment needed varies depending on the underlying cause (which isn't always clear). Good luck

Reading through these comments, I'm amazed how many expect this vet to provide an answer, when the most logical and kind thing to do is to visit your local vet. If you can't afford the treatment, then you shouldn't have had the pet in the first place.
Okay, my cat is 13 years old. Ibd is very possible because he's been throwing up since he was a kitten. However the weight loss came fast and dramatic in about two months time right after he got outside and killed a couple rodents. He went from 11 lbs to 6lbs in less than two months. He has had blood test and only shows being anemic and his white blood cell count is high. November 1st he got a shot of antibiotics. Vet told me give him 2 weeks and then we'll try a ultrasound. He also has diarrhea and is throwing up regularly. This is why I felt he got a tapeworm from possibly eating a flea on the rodents. The flea and worm treatment was topical and I don't really trust it's effectiveness.
I would be devastated if I lost him, please help 🙏
Also, I've been feeding him wet food 3 to 4 times a day in addition to squeeze up treats because he's never been a fan of water. I give him one bowl of warm water and one of room temperature and even catsip cat treat milk too. The most he will drink is a lick of water but will drink the cat milk sometimes.
My 12 year old female cat has always been underweight but now weighs 6.4 pounds. She still plays, eats, and drinks normally. I give my 3 cats all wet food and crunch Ph friendly food as a treat because my boy can form crystals. She was hand fed as a kitten, she and her brother only weighed 4 ounces when I found them after their mom died. I am on such a limited budget and really need help. Anything I can do to help her gain weight?
Is she actually losing weight? If her appetite is good and increasing the amount you are feeding her doesn't help then that does suggest there could be a problem worth checking out
@@OurPetsHealth thank you. I’m keeping a close eye on her. She doesn’t like any people food to fatten her up. Tried boiled chicken, boiled turkey, steamed shrimp, cream cheese, etc... she just doesn’t want any of it.

My cat is losing weight since we started letting him outside, I thought it's because he's now moving more than he did before so I thought he'll start eating more now but he doesn't , we tried with different food and we found one that he liked the most buth he's still not eating much. When he's outside he is eating dry food but sometimes after eating he'll start to throw up or start to throw up but then stop and continue to eat. Hes playing with other cats and also uriniring inside the house(it startet in February so we were okay with cleaning but he didn't stop, we dont have a female cat), my mother is reali angry and she yells at him whes she sees him uriniring, can that be the reasion ? (Sorry about grammar, I'm not speaking English but that doesn't stop me from helping my cat)

I took my cat to the vet, they referred me to a University Vet, they want $2500-3500 just for a Diagnosis. I think my cat is Dying
I took my 13 year old cat to the vet and they did a blood test which came back the GLU is 202 . They told me she has a high blood sugar and to not give her more then 15% protein.. but I read that cats blood sugar gets to 300-400 temporarily from being stressed or anxious idk if anything they told me is right .. my cat was 3 kg now she is 1.7 kg plz help I don’t know how to make her gain weight
+ she also had a tumor removed from her stomach a year ago and they said it’s spread in her tissues so they had to remove some of the tissue. This is where she became very underweight then after the recovery she weighted at 2.6kg and recently she dropped the weight and became 1.7 kg
Something called a fructosamine test can see if the blood glucose is high because of stress or diabetes. If it is diabetes then she will need insulin as well as a diet change which should actually be high protein and low carb (like Purina DM). Sounds like you need to have a chat with your vet or get a second opinion

It takes a lot of energy to feed kittens. If she's otherwise healthy in herself and eating well then feeding her kitten food and increasing the amount should help, also the kittens will not be feeding from her that much at their age now. If she's not well or not eating then she'll need a check over

If they drink a lot, they might have kidney issues.
