      As a German i always love how Doug shows all Quirks and Features and of course the typical over-engineered interieur quirks we Germans love to put into our Cars since the 1980s.
      But if Doug misses a Quirk i'm always confident someone in the Comments points it out, i wouldn't be surprised if there are even some others in this one

      The funniest thing is the honeycomb pattern could possibly reduce the drag. There was a mythbusters episode about car shaped like a golfball and that worked. I don't think Subaru's pattern is deep enough to be efficient but it could theoretically be.

    I appreciate that Doug's reviews are more about "quirks and features" and don't emphasize the driving so much, but this time I think he went a bit too far - he doesn't mention at all about how the car drives! When he finally gets in the car in the last 2 minutes of the video, he only talks about his general thoughts, nothing about the driving, handling, comfort, noise etc.

    Here in Germany, this thing is a pretty big deal. It has been praised to have superior range to almost every other EV today with claims over 700 km (435 mi) which it actually sometimes does. Of course, german reviews of german cars are always a little biased so it is interesting to see the Doug review. Even as a Tesla guy, I consider the EQS a success. It fills its gap in the EV market and targets a slightly different group than Tesla - of course with a higher price tag. I am quite astonished, that there was quite no marketing for this car in the US, since it has been widely advertised in Europe. But even here, the looks of the EQS are also subject to discussions in the car world - I consider it kind of futuristic. I think more cars with a radical aerodynamic shape will follow and people might get used to it, since performance will be merged with efficiency in the future. Big aggressive grills will be 2010's design.

      There is no need to advertise this car in US. With the shortages it is in demand already. Dealers charge considerably more over the list price.

    • @odostolzfu7775
      @odostolzfu7775 2 роки тому +4

      The car has been advertised tho.. just very subtle and mostly through social media, and that’s a genius move of MB.
      See most of my friends (in Germany and abroad) have heard of the EQS in one way or the other. Fact is, they know it exists. Through who? Well there’s MKBHD, Doug, Unbox Therapy and then the who is who of local social media. And that’s great because - and I think Doug is wrong here - it doesn’t necessarily target older s-class buyers, but the young cyber money too. And that’s a domino effect as these people will influence the mid 40-50 business guy. The 60+ s-class customer will go to the dealership anyway.. they won’t watch much UA-cam or advertisements in general.. and at the dealership MB can just point their eyes in the right direction: if they don’t like it, MB might still sell an s-class.
      So all in all I think it’s great „marketing“ by MB and I’m very interested to see if they’ll have success with it.

    • @speakingtruths4215
      @speakingtruths4215 2 роки тому +1

      That's great in Germany, but here in the U.S., it will not sell well. Also, you forgot to mention the performance. 330 horsepower and 0-60 in 5.5 seconds doesn't come anywhere close to a Tesla. Finally, you cannot consider it a success until you see its sales numbers and how many cycles it survives, if any.

    • @speakingtruths4215
      @speakingtruths4215 2 роки тому +1

      @@000OO0OOO0 Dealers can charge whatever they want for this car. It doesn't mean customers will buy it. The biggest mistake a Mercedes dealer can make is to just assume that the EQS has the same cache as a G wagon, for example, which can command high dealer "market adjustment." It literally has no cache, and the undesirable exterior looks don't help.

      I used to drive a 2015 BMW 428i xDrive coupe, and planned to get the next 4-series in 2022, but the new 4-series was sadly made out of pure ugly, and that was very disappointing. So now I have an Audi, and Doug's occasionally obvious to owners, but quirks to newcomers really helped me figure out what to get next that wasn't made out of ugly, and it made me miss and truly value how BMW's radio preset buttons could be set to control, much, more than just the radio.I was overly hopeful when I noticed my A5's radio presets had the light touch feature that shows you what the button is set to, but it can't really be used for anything other than radio stations :(

    A lot of manufacturers and people have been focusing on the performance/efficiency benefits of electric, but I like how this car demonstrates one of electric's biggest advantages is in the luxury sector. The issue with electric cars, charging speeds, charging stations on the road etc is that they differ from Country to Country, so if Doug does that he might would end up having to focus on the US only regarding this.
      For example here in Germany Tesla Charging Stations are easy to find everywhere, but so are others and Charging Speeds are competitive with another, which is probably also why Germany has much more electric cars that aren't Tesla and its growing rapidly.
      Now take the UK, where having a Tesla is much better and more convinient than other electric cars and Charging Speeds at Stations are bad if not Tesla.

It appears to be shaped and angled to hold either two phones in portrait position or wide enough for a single tablet. It also looks like holes through the bottom for two phones charging cables to pass through. Would be a good position to view content for rear passengers while riding in the back seat.

      I think an issue is that most of the featues he goes over in length, simply used to be buttons and knobs that were self explanatory so he didn't feel the need to spend time on it. "This knob adjusts the audio" - the end. But now when it's in a screen it's as if he has to spend 5x as much time on every little element no matter how common said feature truly is.
      I mean, I get that the triple screen is a key feature in of itself, but dedicating literally half your review to just screens seems overly excessive.

    It drives me crazy that Mercedes, for their first "flagship" (but late to market) all-electric car, would put the charge port in the back opposite the driver (where the gas filler would be normally). Its almost universally been the case that electric cars have the charge port on the drivers side, especially on the front fender. This EQS body is all new, they could put it anywhere! Even the previous test platform "Electric Drive" B-class had it on the drivers side! It should always be somewhere very obvious to the driver, inconvenient even, so they don't accidentally drive away with it plugged in. Between the drivers door and the front wheel is a perfect spot, super obvious, impossible to miss when you get in the car.

    I’m pro electric car. I’m a M-B fan for their traditional image. But some things in cars are going backwards. It used to be car makers tried to cut down on reflections that might dazzle and distract the driver. Now they add them. It used to be car makers grouped controls that were within fingertip reach of the driver and intuitive to use. Now they fill them with touch screens and touch sensitive controls that demand you take your eyes off the road to look at what you are pressing. It used to be clear visibility was important - blind spots were a bad thing. Now they are designed in, with small windows, huge sloping roof pillars, and a reliance on tech to aid with positioning a vehicle when you can’t see where it’s placed by eye. All this tech will kill cars. When it begins to fail (which it will) and the cost to repair and replace exceeds the car’s value as the car ages, or spares and tech support is withdrawn as things move on (which it will be) and things like climate control, GPS and the audio system become inoperative, it will kill cars and they will be recycled sooner than they would be if they had less tech. It’s the second video of an EQS I’ve watched. I hated it in the first video and I hate it in this one. It’s styled like a wood louse, and it’s an information overload on the inside. Wheeled computers aren’t for me.

    • @rx6180
      @rx6180 2 роки тому

      I drive a reasonably modern car now, a 2015 Volvo V40 which I think went out of production in 2019, and it is a thick-pillared safety oriented car. It’s okay, I like it. But before it I owned a 2014 Astra. One of the MANY things I quickly grew to hate about that car was the blind spots created by the design of the car. It had (rather like the Mercedes here I think) the base of the windscreen a very long way off from the driver, so the screen was steeply raked, and it had those little triangular side windows ahead of the door mirrors to fill the gap between the A pillar and the door. There are hundreds of thousands of cars driving around with this design trend, but I hated it. The triangulation of the thick pillars in this area and the useless little window which wasn’t even visible from the driving seat on the drivers side, created a blind spot that could hide oncoming cars from view, in certain situations on certain bends. Those pillars, plus the high bonnet line at the base of the screen, which then dropped away such that the bonnet was not at all visible from the driving seat (like so many modern cars) in my case at least, made it so I couldn’t place where the front wheel was when parking near a kerb. I used to make so many novice driver errors with that car, kerbing the tyres, despite driving for nearly 40 years when I owned it, that I just couldn’t live with it. The basic design features with the screen and pillars are in the Cadillac ELR that Doug reviewed, him saying the A pillar created a blind spot that ‘hid a whole apartment block’ and the base of the windshield was ‘three blocks away’. My Volvo ain’t so bad, but it still has small windows compared to the 1998 Ford Escort I have stashed in my garage, which is like a glasshouse in comparison.

    Now I’m probably just a bitter owner, but my mind always goes back to how you also gave the bronco a 6/10 in styling despite saying that the design is universally loved, including your take on it which boiled down to it being extremely cool, even more so than the wrangler.
    Not really looking for anything haha, just makes the scoring system come off as a bit odd.
    Again, love your work, the videos you make always make my day better. Happy holidays!

      Personally, I think the EQS is beautiful. I know most don't agree, so that 6 is a compromise.

    I love that the HUD identifies what car it's focused on at any given time. My car is a 2010 with adaptive cruise control and it works fantastically, however I get so annoyed when it suddenly brakes for seemingly no reason at all. For instance when I'm passing a truck on the highway, about 4/10 times it will suddenly start slowing down or brake hard before catching its bearings and continuing on, if only I knew exactly what it switched it's attention to, perhaps I could avoid that or make a different steering adjustment next time.

    • @Benzinilinguine
      @Benzinilinguine 2 роки тому

      Now I know why people use their brakes on the highway for seemingly no reason, creating a traffic snake of braking that lasts for hours.
      Please stop using that feature. Someone is going to rear-end you and it'll be your fault. Not by insurance company standards, but you'll know. You'll know your car slammed its brakes. For no reason.

    • @man_on_wheelz
      @man_on_wheelz 2 роки тому +4

      @@Benzinilinguine Adaptive cruise control works great 99% of the time, no matter what car you're driving that has it, and it doesn't SLAM on the brakes, just brakes unnecessarily. In the few times it's braked particularly hard there was never anyone directly behind me anyway, as I typically only use it when on the open road going a long distance. So it's a bit excessive to just STOP using such a useful feature my car comes with. You must always pay attention to the road and your car, even when using adaptive cruise control so that you can make an appropriate reaction adjustment. Often times I just override the system by pressing the accelerator and the most other drivers would see is my brake lights for a brief moment. If the sensor gets partially blocked it may not see the cars in front of me and fail to brake, being the good driver that I am, I press the brakes myself. Still, a great system, and I am not going to stop using it unless it stops working.

    • @ilyasibz
      @ilyasibz 2 роки тому +1

      @@man_on_wheelz That sounds like a faulty adaptive cruise system to be honest. You need to get it checked out. I use my ACC on the motorway very regularly and have never once had that issue.

    • @man_on_wheelz
      @man_on_wheelz 2 роки тому +2

      @@ilyasibz How new is your car? Remember, this is a 2010. Old, early technology. Again, it's fine 99% of the time and that's not an exaggeration. When the weather is good and the car is clean it see's cars in front of me at a certain distance as it should and slows down to as little as 20mph as it's programmed to do. Nothing wrong with that. I've driven newer cars that will stop and start on their own and do a smoother job at slowing down when cars cut me off. None of these cars are perfect, and mine is an early adaptation of the system so it's REALLY not perfect, but I know it's limitations and short-comings as the driver/owner of this car. Nothing needs to be checked out, in fact, nothing CAN be checked out, and if it did need to be checked out it would simply throw an error and not work at all. Believe me, I work on cars myself and I especially have dissected this system on my own car, even making a minor repair once. I know how it works, and I know it's working perfectly fine, just has an occasional bug that is somehow triggered by passing a truck sometimes.

    Doug, As I am not a electric car user/owner, I do watch them very closely but, looking over what Tesla offers, like ultra quick charging (almost fully charge a car in 45 min) and or slow charging, what networks of charging they support. I would like to see more information about these during your videos. Most cars people can get a good idea by watching videos if they were going to buy one but, electric cars are different game. A little thing about charging, or how fast the charging can go from 0-100%, etc. This would be very helpful.
    If this car, does not support any super fast charging (on a major network), and your traveling with this car where a charge will take 3 hours, It's pretty much worthless unless your in town, or back and forth to work only type of car... See my point ?
