That W140 is a bygone era that could never be replaced. You can feel the over engineered components working together to deliver the s-class experience that we all fell in love with. Tech will never surpass traditional engineering.
I think Mercedes peaked in the traditional sense in the 90s era, but peaked as a performance car maker with the rest of enthusiast cars as a whole in the late 2000s. My E30 also has that tank sort of feel when opening and closing doors or tapping on panels.
James on the old S class: it doesn’t look expensive. Doesn’t have that “boss look” Me: EVERY film that has a Yakuza boss, got out of the back of one… sooo
A level black on black mid facelift S600 would look even more BOSS I think you could role up with one of them in 30years and it still be unmistakably BOSS Like the 600 from the 60s
"This looks like an old iPad" And that is my exact grippe with all interiors relying on screens. Tech doesn't age well. Look at any touchscreen from 10 years ago. Nicely crafted materials, good design ages well, screens don't. Mercedes and Audi are main victims here IMO right now.
Yes. thank you, exactly. Machined and crafted metal controls give feeling of luxury while screen makes you think, oh this cost two hundred dollars. What the hell?
You all maybe don't think/understand that it's exactly what car manufacturers want: all these interiors are designed to look old and obsolete after some time so that you, customer, you feel the need to buy a new and updated version of you car. That's why frequent face-lifting and interior updates became such a trend. Ah and if this this thing reminds you about phone manufacturers that release every less than a year a new phone, making yours old and obsolete, you are not that wrong...
On audi they made an effort to integrate the display into the dashboard and it looks really good, while on the mercs it's just a display slapped behind the wheel like an afterthought. They are both screens, but I wouldn't place them in the same category.
The head-rest button joke and the throat-clearing "I've got something to say" blooper at the end have cemented my opinion that you guys are the best car show out there. Your presentation style and level of professionalism mixed with the (more tasteful and far less ridiculous) Top Gear silliness moments are just right. Keep it up!
My grandad had a W140 about 20 years ago. Phenomenal car. One of the reasons why luxury cars from this era ride so well is they hand sensible wheels sizes. Same with the E38, and the LS etc. 17” would have been a big wheel on them.

I think those huge rims people have today on their luxury sedans and SUV's look silly. Like some rapper with oversized gold chains all over his neck. You're never gonna drift with those rims or anything, they're just for looks. Why would anyone sacrifice ride quality and immunity from curb rash just for a little more street cred?
You guys are the BEST at reviewing cars when it comes to ride quality. You nailed it in this video and we appreciate how much detail you go into paying attention to the bump absorption, refinement, wafting, the suspension produces.
@@chekauk7596 exactly, stuff like that is a reason why I dont always understand why ppl praise the build quality so much when creaking and stuff like that feel so cheap
@@Ss_jacko The point he made was that touch screens and computer tech advances so fast that within a few years the touch screens will be obsolete. 2015 touch screens are obsolete today, whereas a car with simple buttons and a mount for the phone is not as obscene.
I can't agree more with the one comment about the stuck on screens. I can't wait till MB gets back to integrated screens and interiors sculpted around the tools you use to drive the car. I loved seeing the w140 in this video. The very first Mercedes I ever drove was a 1992 600 SEL which left a huge impression on my 16 year old self at the time. That car was revolutionary for its time and I remember loving the instrument cluster with the massive, sculpted hood over the numerous dials. Mercedes's direction with interiors today has driven me to BMW, however I'm sure a new generation of vehicles will lure me back at some point.
I bought the 500SEL version of the 140 new in 1992. Extended length, power rear seats, soft close doors and trunk, little stainless steel rods rising out of the fenders to show the ends of the car, etc. Fantastic car. Drove it for 10 years / 220k miles with almost zero issues.
This car still alive even in Kazakhstan where poor quality of gas, no special services and or original spare parts… w140 is a TRU LEGEND as well as w124.

@@lucaswelby546 The S600 (v12) is probably going to be the least reliable out of all of them. Not awful, but repairs are going to be EXPENSIVE when they happen, so plan for that. They are incredibly smooth (but so are the V8 versions). But! They are probably gonna go up in value soon as they are starting to reach classic status and the S600 is going to command the highest prices. So it could be a good investment if you’re smart about it and get it for a good price!
In my opinion, the W140 has the most class of the S-classes. It's the ultimate S-class. It doesn't have all the gizmos and gadgets, but as the guys said, it was an engineering marvel of the time. And I'm yet to drive it myself. I loved it for so many years, but I didn't have the opportunity do drive one. I was a passenger of once for a short 30km trip, but I was too young to fully appreciate it.
I'm only watching this for the old S-Class, in the middle east, it was nicknamed The Ghost and it was such a legend, whoever drove one had the right of way!
How good was the W140 engineered? In another 30 years it'll STILL be humming along with it's soft touch doors. That's if gas stations are still a thing 30 years from now.

W140. Any day. Anytime. It’s still stunning. To make it a fairer comparison make it the 600 SEL next time. A friend had one years ago and still I feel is the benchmark.
I had a S500 from 94,my best car ever. I ll have one again in a blink of an eye! The new one is fantastic, but the W140 was the king. In the words of the queen, once a king, always a king!
Back in '91 I had the absolute honor of being able to visit the spectacular IAA in Frankfurt, Germany, where the new W140 was displayed for the audience. The car was totally jaw dropping back then. Nothing the world had ever seen before in car building. It was huge, it was modern, it was bald, it was aristocratic....people, many many people had gathered around the Nautic blue 600 SEL to catch a glimpse of the car and especially it's fine interior. The entire experience was mesmerising, mindboggling. The air was filled with excitement over this boss-of-all-cars. Yes, it was the absolute pinnacle of car building and nothing even came close. Now, when I look at the latest, probably very fine S-class, excitement doesn't kick in. Just another great Benz, that doesn't really stand out anymore against it's strong competitors. That's....a pity. And sad somehow. Glad I was there in Frankfurt back in '91 though....😊

Funny intro, but as a longtime W140 S500 owner heading toward 300k miles I was deeply disappointed. WHY...would you borrow the lowest possible engine/trim level of W140? This appears to be a short wheelbase 6 cylinder which would lack the SLS rear suspension. At minimum, a LWB V-8 with SLS would have been more representative of North American W140's.
Hey guys Brilliant review on the w223 and the w140! At the risk of being the peanut gallery and nit nerding the details, the w140 is very very forward in its execution. The double glazed glass is entirely unique to the w140 in that it is manufactured like that of your home rather than other glass wherein the panes are sandwiched together. Further, a comparison between the top-flite s580 and entry level s320 swb is not entirely fair either as the then top spec s600 came with most everything you commented about in the s580, or it was available as an option. That includes adaptive suspension, added sound deadening, adjustable rear seats, more power, adjustable seating, phone, fax, tv, and nav. The model you have there is likely a 96, which would make it the first of the decontented Mercedes of the schrempp years. 95 has more features and 97 re added some and replaced asr w esp and bas, added sound deadening, new electronics for the engine w new mounts making it quieter, new transmission, new security and improved handling.
I have a 1979 S-Class that's about the same length as this new S-Class, and mine without rear wheel steering, has a tighter turn radius than my wife's Civic. Taking tight turns is a commonly unknown but excellent feature of the 1970s W116 chassis.
My younger brother's first car was a W140 S-class - specifically, a 1998 S 320 pretty similar to the one in the video. That car was a tank. The trunk was ginormous, and when it shut it had this metallic "clank" that was really satisfying.
I've got a '99 W140 S500 black on black with 260000 km+ on it. The driving experience is still world class and extremely comfortable even by modern standards.
To drop the rear head rests was not a feature that had been invented in that 90s S Class. It had been available in a mercedes E Class in 1986 already. Maybe it had been invented for the 80s S Class or even before that. But I appreciate that both of the moderators appreceated that feature much more than all that touch display bullshit. In my opinion the "cockpit" equipped with two totally dominating touchscreens is absolutly ugly and a total design catastrophy, especially the one behind the stearing wheel. It looks as if the car is still in the testing process without having a speedmeter etc. built in and the testing engineer has placed his tablet behind the stearing wheel as an improvised solution to get instant driving data during several testing cycles.---- It seems as if the constructors had forgotten that they were building a car instead of an entertainment fascillity. To make my point of view clear, I am not against an option to get access to a touchscreen while driving, but the screen itself is an ugly object to be looked at while not in use. So it should be out of sight then. Concerning the tachometer, speedometer etc. I would prefer classic instruments. If there are advantages in led displays, which lead to choose one, it should be designed to imitate the appearance of classic instruments at least. From outside the new S class is not looking good. Someone in the comments wrote it looks like a used soap, I agree to that. Especially the front is looking bad, there is no consistency in the forms of the different parts of it.

The W140 looks very expensive back then. It’s big and has a big grille and I still remember one encounter I had with it as a kid. It just look imposing.
I’m glad Mercedes has decided to go with the fussy, less practical and certain to be expensive to fix electronic door handles like the Tesla. So much better than a simple handle that you just pull to open the door and works for the life of the car. Progress is so wonderful.
@@MaticTheProto people like me? I hate unnecessary electronics like this. Don’t get me started on touchpad screens replacing all buttons and dials so you need to go through 3 layers of menu to change the temperatures. You misread me totally.
I see nothing wrong with it because touchscreens are and is the future of today, so I don't see why you'd complain unless you're as old as my mom and can't keep up with all this technology. Things are changing and you can either be stuck in the past or evolve with it. It's like in the early 1900's when vehicles started becoming a thing, people said that horses and buggys are better yet here we are.
@@vince3523 I use touch screens all the time but they are a dangerous idea in cars because you need to take your eyes off the road and to try and hit individual touch buttons while the car is moving. A physical knob and button requires much less time with your eyes off the road to operate. Having to go through layers of touch menus to change the temperature or turn on heated seats is crazy. Just because something works best in one situation doesn’t make it the best for everything.
I dedicated most of channel to the w140. Although they are getting old and don’t have the modern tech, they are extremely reliable and all the issues with electronics can be fixed by the average weekend DIYer

I bought a 1999 S320 in March of 1998. I was 26 years old and I was so proud. My wife and I thought we finally made it. We loved that car. We had it for 10 years. We traded it in for a 2009 BMW X6. We went in to buy a 7 series, but when we first laid eyes on the X6, we were sold. It looked like it was going 90 MPH just sitting in the showroom. The W223 is slowly growing on me, however I can't overlook the huge and inappropriate grille. The W222 (2018) looked amazing and was a proper successor to such a legend design wise. The W223 dropped the ball spectacularly in the front and the back. The A8 looks miles better and is truly understated whereas the 7 Series is even bolder in design and can pull it actually off in my opinion. The new S-Class looks like a softie and just like a bigger A-Class Sedan. No wonder they tried to make up for it with all the incredible tech.
huge and inappropriate grill? the grill isn’t bigger compared to the W 222 (2013) gen, it’s just designed different, that’s why it looks bigger. and it’s especially small if you campare it to something like the W 07 / W 150, that thing is a grill on wheels and nobody is complaining about it. and calling the S-Class „just an bigger A-Class“ is kinda pathetic. you would never mistake them if you see both in real life. btw here’s a secret: every mercedes is supposed to look similar, it’s called family resemblance and they are doing it that way longer then you’re alive, but don’t tell anybody.
@@dr-ok3sn maybe it’s just cause I like cars but in real life I can tell every single Mercedes model apart, trust me the s class does not look an a class in person
@@dr-ok3sn the grills is bigger than on the W222 (both versions), it's also more rounded and just makes it look like a whale. On top of that the new headlights look like the ones on the E-Class, C-Class and A-Class. The last generations of these cars all had similar but still unique head lights. In the new generation they just get bigger, pretty boring. And yes it looks like a bigger A-Class, especially in the back. I live in germany and see both cars quite regularly, so I know what I'm talking about. You will never mistake an A4 or A6 for an A8. Same goes for the 3 Series, 5 Series and 7 Series. "This looks like an old iPad"
And that is my exact grippe with all interiors relying on screens.
Yeah those screens are really tacky, they really need to integrate them into the dashboard, how can Mercedes-Benz possibly thinks it looks good,smh...
@@zdenekkrapka5325 So very true.
W140 is just a, timeless master piece

Consider that the McLaren F1 had 17" wheels! Anything larger than 18", or perhaps 19" is just silly.

Thank you.

“When Germans were real Germans” ouch.
I spit my coffee on my phone when thomas dropped the rear head rests holy shit
To drop the rear head rests was not a feature that had been invented in that 90s S Class. It had been available in a mercedes E Class in 1986 already. Maybe it had been invented for the 80s S Class or even before that.
But I appreciate that both of the moderators appreceated that feature much more than all that touch display bullshit. In my opinion the "cockpit" equipped with two totally dominating touchscreens is absolutly ugly and a total design catastrophy, especially the one behind the stearing wheel. It looks as if the car is still in the testing process without having a speedmeter etc. built in and the testing engineer has placed his tablet behind the stearing wheel as an improvised solution to get instant driving data during several testing cycles.----
It seems as if the constructors had forgotten that they were building a car instead of an entertainment fascillity.
I was JUST waiting for him to do it again because you KNEW he would :D

Nothing compares to a late 80's to mid 90's Mercedes.
If they hadn’t, people like you would cry about it being worse than a tesla

Just a small thing. W140 was not the first car with double glazing, it was the E32 7 series
The 2021 S-Class was built with a budget in mind. The W140 had no limit, and it shows (Mercedes got insanely shook due to the LS400 dropping)
Too bad that their old cars didn’t make a lot of profit, otherwise Maybach would still be its own thing too
Acura scared them even earlier with the Legend. I have a video from Mercedes explaining to their customers why they should choose a Mercedes over the Legend.
The EQS looks like a luxury Prius
I own a W140 S600L. I don't know the config you have been driving, but there is Active Body Control for the W140, ensuring a damn comfy ride. The V12 reduces the noise inside even more (your 320 seemed rather loud)
Also "Fun fact": There was a EU project that implemented self driving in the W140. Project VAMORS.
That W140 is the best road car (despite 2 door sport cars like 911 etc) ever made. Older it gets, even better looking it gets. It looks way better that the W220 and W222 or anything came after this.

The w126 looks better IMO. It looks like a classic already. This is just an old car.
It looks classy and you can feel the built quality even from a monitor screen. I love that
So sad i sold it few years ago, should have kept it
The new s class looks like it's trying to hard to be it's past predecessor but with new technologies, while the old one is like "you'll never compare to me"
I bought the W140 V12 600SE when I was 25, never ever getting rid of it.
Not a fan of the floating tablet, I prefer integrated. Seats look amazingly comfortable.
Looks like crap.....I can't believe that's what they did there
It is integrated. It's integrated with the centre console and floats parallel with the dashboard
@@RealOrbit-Australia no it doesn't you're just blind af
@@eventusvantos2770 I'm not blind because I see iPads stuck in front of a steering wheel in a luxury sedan... What do you see
@@RealOrbit-Australia by that logic every car has an iPad
I see that you're blind af
Bloody brilliant car even till this day. I still do thank the lucky stars for giving me the opportunity to own a beautiful 1997 S320 long wheel base with a special interior rare in the non-V12s (or V8s).
I have an old Mercedes c220 1997 no turbo and Its diesel and, i got it in 2021 as my first car and im in love with the car, cant imagine having a s class
