  • The 2022 Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance ($229,000 CAD, $170,500 USD) has stirred up quite a commotion as the newest EV to hit the market. With hopes of going toe to toe against the mighty Tesla Model S Plaid, the Dream Edition Performance packs 1,111 horsepower. Thomas and James are eager to see what the Lucid Air can do on a California canyon road. Will it be able to keep up with the sharp turns and bends despite being quite large and rather heavy? And just how livable is the interior on a day to day basis? Watch to find out what the guys think! We hope you enjoy the episode. SUBSCRIBE!

    Just days ago I thought that the joke about how much a car weighs has become a staple of car journalism, starting (if I remember correctly) with Clarkson who said about some car it weighs as much "as a moon". NO, you are ABSOLUTELY not alone. I find it HIGHLY IRONIC that the safety industry pushes us away from using our phones when we drive; where we can be ticketed in many state and local jurisdictions for using our mobile devices while driving. In some places, you can get ticketed even if you're completely stopped but are on a public roadway (like sitting at a stop sign or stop light, scrolling on your phone). Yet here we are, with automakers placing giant iPads on the dashboard and burying all the "no-look" features behind layers of software and inherently distracting technology that requires you to take your eyes off the road.
      I suppose if we make everything voice controlled, such as "Tesla, set my heat to level 3 at 68 degrees", it wouldn't be as big a deal. But even then, buttons are usually 100 percent accurate every time and I can access them without taking my eyes off the road, simply by feel and placement. These interactivity compromises are creating solutions to problems that never existed in the first place until we started ramping up the tech in our cars, and at the same time we harp on everyone about safety and paying attention behind the wheel of a vehicle. Am I also a hater and idiot for agreeing with and emphasizing your point? I think this is a valid elephant in the room!

It may be Ok when cars are fully autonomous, but at the present time, I don't think it should be legal to produce cars that require interaction with a touchscreen for routine tasks.

    Great test of an awesome new EV. Beautifully executed performance vehicle but one asks the question why they launched with a large sedan which is a body style that is virtually extinct. I wonder is there is a market for these cars?

    • @Miata822
      @Miata822 2 роки тому +4

      Why sedan? It is a statement, establishing an identity for the brand and challenging Mercedes directly. From the beginning the Air was designed to compete with the very best _ICE_ cars and win people over to driving electric.
      Doing this also lets them begin production at low volume and take the time to work out assembly processes as they build out their facility. Today Lucid is doing assembly in what will ultimately be only the paint shop. They building the rest of the factory today. Next year reservations open for the Lucid Gravity SUV, which should sell in much greater numbers and will need a larger facility.
      It takes time to start up production. It did for Tesla and is now doing the same for Rivian. Lucid was smart to start with a high profile low volume car. You can follow construction progress at the Arizona factory on the UA-cam channel "Bear's Workshop"

    • @cstavaru
      @cstavaru 2 роки тому +1

      It's not like city roads suddenly turned into apocalyptic piles of dirt so people needed SUV's to move. The sedan body style only became extinct because the industry kept releasing uglier and uglier designs, look at the Mercedes EQS. The Lucid looks good enough to have no issues selling it and maybe even reversing the trend.

    • @Miata822
      @Miata822 2 роки тому

      @@cstavaru Not really. The trend dates back to the '80s when mileage standards really started to kick in and kept increasing. Cars were getting smaller and much less powerful.
      At that time SUVs were basically trucks, think Suburbans. Being classified as trucks they didn't fall under the CAFE fleet mileage requirements and could still have big V8s.
      Eventually legislation and regulation began to close the gap but the trend was already set. Today what passes for an SUV isn't that far from what we used to call a minivan, just a taller car. Today the really big SUVs are still "trucks" and still don't have to meet the same mileage requirements.

    Fourth time watching as I wait patiently (impatiently) for my Zenith Red Air Gt. Sure, it's only 800hp, but we all have to make compromises.
    *EDIT* I got my car. It has appeal slathered all over it. 60-100 in just under 6 seconds by my clock, and not one squeek to be heard (except from the passenger). The red color is a deep metalic maroon or burgundy trending to black depending on the light and is utterly bewitching. By far the best vehicle I have ever owned. I will resist just listing features. All I can say is go drive one. Even if the 800hp GT had dizzying thrust. The drive experience alone would be well worth the price. Would definitely pick it over the Dream Edition or the pending 1050hp GTP version.
    *EDIT 2* Ten months after getting my Air GT. I drive it to the normal places now tin the Texas winter. Yesterday the people in the hardware store were asking about it. People stare while waiting at traffic lights. Last Fall I took a friend for a balls-out Ozark blast. This guy had introduced me to track driving decades ago. Later he admitted to being terrified with the force I rolled in from each apex. While you, dear reader, may just think "Well, he's old." I can pretty confidently say that this AGT is quicker on a twisty road than anything you have been in outside of a video game. And I'm putting a little aside for a Sapphire (1,200hp, track set-up). We'll see.

    Objectively, you'd be high on meth to believe the Lucid Air is built anywhere near the quality of an S-Class or EQS; Benz has a 120 year head start on auto manufacturing. However the Air is good enough that its other positives may be able to make up for it enough that I can't really fault anyone for buying it over the EQS. However Tesla is not even in this conversation; they don't even have a sedan this size and in quality they are in the Dark Ages to either of these. The EQS and Air are currently a party of two; which for Lucid, is amazing.

      I have completely lost respect (what little I had) for government rules regarding car design---from headlights to interior control & visibility aspects (I'm looking at you, ever growing, already dangerously FAT, vision-blocking 'A' pillars).
      Governments dictate we car owners can't modify headlights, for example, because.....why? "Rules"? Supposedly because we'd make them blind oncoming drivers. Oh! And because all their regulations surrounding headlight design means the car buying public can be assured all new car headlights will illuminate the road *_SO_* well---and uniformly across brands and models.
      *_BZZZZZZZZZZTT !!!_*
      Of course *new car headlights are so **_incredibly_** inconsistently designed,* that many don't even pass the (American) IIHS test for illuminating the road ahead, and any driver who's driven on any road anywhere in the world in the past few years has been virtually blinded by oncoming *"safe", "government approved"* headlights after dark.

Honestly, a modern Toyota with maxed out trim (platinum IIRC) would be nicer than a Tesla. The Lucid has all the components needed that, with extra screens behind seats along with an “executive console” in the back and way more material customizability, they could go toe-to-toe with a Rolls Royce. For now, they are raising prices to reduce queues, and even with that, some models still have a 1.3 year waiting list...I like Lucid and I wish them well, but they are literally just starting while Tesla will be pumping out 1.5M cars next year.

      Agreed, NIO is much more of a threat than Lucid. They already have 5 models, are about to complete their huge factory and are more luxurious than Tesla (like Lucid). Also with battery swap tech, a supercharging network and an Apple like ecosystem with NIO houses, apps and products, NIO will rival Tesla much more than Lucid. They also already delivered 95k cars this year and will probably double to 200k next year. Their new ET7 claps Tesla’s sedans in battery life, design and luxury. It’s gonna sell like hotcakes

    I love the production quality of your videos, these are really becoming very enjoyable to watch even if I'm not a huge fan of the car.
    So about the car... I have no issues with electric, in fact I have wanted to go electric for a long time. My issue is that everybody making electric cars is making them gimmicky. Curved screens, touch screen everything, so called minimalistic (actually cheap) interiors. I want an electric car, that looks amazing, drives amazing and has a long range. I want an electric car with an interior identical to a petrol cars interior. I've had touch screens, they're not safe or better, you have to take your eyes off the road to use them, give me physical buttons, an instrument cluster with a hood and a full center console. I own an X5 5.0i and an M850i today, I've just paid off the X5 and once the M850 is paid off the X5 will be replaced. I'd love that to be an all electric X5 that looks identical to the gas X5.
