diyforknuckleheads.com How to Build a Deck. Owner Builder Series: Episode 48! G'day Knuckleheads, Uncle Knackers here and welcome to my How to Build a Front Deck Video. The owner builder renovation is almost over! In this Episode l go over the process of building the front deck. The end result was fantastic and was well worth the effort and expense. I used treated pine for the sub floor and Tonka (a South American Hardwood) for the fascia boards, deck posts and the decking boards. The two major reasons for using Tonka for the deck was that it's very attractive to look at and it is the only Hardwood that doesn't leach! Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments section below.

6 years later and this video is still gold. I've learned things in this video that I haven't from others, like using the spray to seal the cut ends. I really like the part where the joists were slighter lower than the band so the floor would be flush with it. The stairs were awesome too.
👍😁....Cheers Rod! Glad you liked it mate and thanks for the feedback! 👍😁🇦🇺
Good timing. This is my next project.
Good luck with it Daz 👍👍
Grand job, that man..
Thanks Geoff 👍👍😁
As per normal... Fan-bloody-tastic.
Thanks Robin! Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers :-)

knackaaaazzzz!
Leeeoonnnnn!! :-)
I can't imagine how nice it must be to freely order wood like that in bulk. In the UK hardwood costs a fortune so I'm pretty much limited to pine. That's such a great job. I don't think I've seen a nicer deck!
Cheers Andy......have to say though mate that it is still fairly pricey over here but it is in large supply 👍 Mate we love our deck and spend a lot of time out on it watching the world go by 😁....Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺
Legend.
Glad you liked the deck mate. Cheers
Amazing your skills
Thank you
Checked out the pictures. Absolutely beautiful. New porch, new chair, some beer......great way to end the day! Thanks for the video.
Appreciate the comment Sandi :-)
Perfection!
Glad you liked it John and for the comment :-)

G'day Marty....thanks for that mate. Really appreciate the comment. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers :-)

I'm inspired to build my own deck. Watching the how-to-oil-a-deck video makes me want to do it more. Thank you!
Good luck with it Luca! 👍😁
Great job and so are the pics
That wood is stunning, Your craftsmanship is spot on!
Thanks Fog.....appreciate the comment. The wood is amazing and still looks great 4 years later 👍 Thanks for watching 👍🇦🇺😁
I haven't commented in a while but I have to say that is a mighty fine looking deck... Using the right tool can make working a pleasure and that nail gun is definitely the right tool. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Thom. That gun is like having your own personal machine gun :-)
Krike mate.....thats so kewl
👍👍😁

That's a BEAUTIFUL deck Shane. All the extra steps really pay off. I especially like the way you "framed" it is so there is no end grain showing. Can't wait for the big reveal??? GREAT job. Aunti Knackers must be itching to get in there and make the house a home!! (she probably already has)
Thanks Mark and no end grain insight :-) Couple of vids to go and then the reveal mate. Cheers :-)
Beautiful deck Shane and the way you did the stairs really sets it off. Nice attention to detail.
Thanks WoodRodent. Yeah l was really happy with how it turned out. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers mate :-)

Thanks mate. I appreciate the feedback. Cheers
Beautiful project all the what thru.
Thanks David :-)
Hey Unc. Just realised it took you 18 minutes to install a door handle but only 12 to build a deck. Now there is value for money (and it looks great :-)
HAHAHHA.....yeah those pesky door handles :-) Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers :-)

Nice to see you using the good Canadian invented screws
I didn't know they were Canadian mate
What a Great Deck Build Shane, well done it looks Fab. Just been on your Pinterest Page to see the finished Article so to speak, and that looks brilliant, especially looks good in the lighting at night. Well Done again a great job. TC, Barry (Bazza, from England)

That looks stunning mate, looked at the finished photos over on Pinterest too. Fantastic!
Thanks mate :-)
Beautiful wood, love the stairs, but no deck jokes, so many missed opportunities !
Yeah l know Brian..what an opportunity LOL. My deck is bigger than your deck....how big is your deck, how to wash your deck etc etc...the list goes on :-)
DIYForKnuckleheads - hahaha!! :-D
hi nice job mate
Cheers Dave.
Awesome my friend very nicely done i like it sir :)
Thanks TJ :-)
No problem my friend :)
You seem to do the videos on jobs I'm doing in the next few months! It comes in quite handy! Keep them coming!
Thanks mate. Just in case you're pouring a driveway in the next month or so, that's what's coming up next :-)
Big concrete dining table is next, with chunky welded up legs. Well maybe before the porch.
You're going to run out of house to renovate for the channel soon.
Hi Shane, greetings from the land of your ancestors 🇮🇪. Have been binge watching all of your content recently and I gotta say you are a true inspiration! Just one question. Did you say that you were going to do a DIY series on the deck build? It would be a rippa!
G'day Jonathan 👍 You are spot on my good man....Irish is in my blood 😁 I didn't get around to the series mate...had to much going on 😊 Thanks for watching the vids mate...very much appreciated! 👍😁🇦🇺
offsetting screws in hardwood...like a boss
Cheers mate :-)
I thought for shure you would attach the ledger board to the rim joist of the house. Looks good though.
Another question Shane: What sized nails are you using to temporarily attach those joist to the fascia board and what type are you using in the nail gun? Cheers...again lol! Also, would it be ok to use an impact driver for the screws?
Shane: Another inspirational job done I bet both you and your good lady are glad the jobs nearly complete are you having a grand barbecue to celebrate completion?
Thanks Paul. Plans for the house warming in progress as we speak. :-)
Shane, you make that look as easy as Bob's Your Uncle. Before you attach the joists, do you inspect them for bowing? What do you do if you find one that is bowed? Thanks again, mate!
Thanks David and yes l always inspect for bowing. If there is a bow, install the joist bow side (the top of the bridge) up. If possible l always hand select my timber from the hardware shop before purchasing. If you don't, and just rely on them, they'll throw any old rubbish into your order. If you don't get that chance, select the straight ones for the joists and cut the bent ones up as noggins. Cheers mate :-)
Looking great that deck mate, never heard of that timber but I'll bet you can build your outdoor chair out of the off cuts, quick question mate do you reckon it necessary to oil the treated pine frame prior to putting those top boards on ?, I just got that countersink bit as well and looking forward to giving it a whirl shortly, hope you enjoyed a quite ale after the construct 👍🏻🍺👍🏻🇦🇺
G'day Dirk. I wish l did have offcuts....l finished up with only a couple of short sticks left!! Talk about cutting it fine, l thought l had actually over ordered :-) No there's no need to oil the treated pine. Just make sure you treat all the cut ends with L.O.S.P. You'll love that countersinking bit. It's a great little tool and yes a couple of cool ones have been had. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers mate :-)
au.pinterest.com/shaneconlan/my-new-front-deck/
Wow! I've not checked out your channel for a while .... Been distracted . But in the time since I last looked you appear to have ripped a house down and built another one by your self . Good lad! I'm Looking forward to doing some catching up. I hope it's all gone well .
G'day Chris. Yeah l had a pretty hectic 10 months in 2016. Demolished and rebuilt my old beach shack. A truck load of work but it was totally worth it. Thanks for coming back for a look. Have a great new year. Cheers :-)
Looks amazing. Are you going to do any more work to it afterwards? Some sort of timber stain?
Thanks mate. No it's all done. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos after it was oiled. Cheers :-)
au.pinterest.com/shaneconlan/my-new-front-deck/
looking great!! not familliar with the timber you used for the deck floor, will you have to finish is with a stain or some type of water sealer?
Thanks mate. Yeah it's not a very common Species. I used it because it doesn't leech and it looks fantastic. I wanted a beach feel to the place so this timber will go silver if not oiled which is kind of the look l want to go for eventually. I just need some plants to grow first before l let it grey off. If you don't want it to 'grey off' then just apply some decking oil to it. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers mate :-)
au.pinterest.com/shaneconlan/my-new-front-deck/
You'll see how it looks after it's been oiled. Cheers
Hi Shane. Neat job! What's the difference between Paslode nailer gun and the coil nailer? I'm about to build a 30sqm low level deck and have heaps of noggins to fix in between my joists. Screw each of them sounds will take some time so looking to get myself a nail gun to speed up the job.
G'day mate...sorry about the late reply. The coil nail shoots a nail with large flat head so it's often used for fencing and attaching metal brackets to wood which is why l used it on this job. The Paslode nailer is really suited to nailing wood to wood without any metal in between. Hope that makes sense. 👍
hey man great videos, was just wondering if you were planning on making more recycled furniture videos ? Cheers!
Thanks Daniel and yes that's the plan mate. I'm really looking forward to it and l hope you can stick around. Cheers :-)
Looks awesome mate, where do you get that lost preservative in a spray can?
Mate...most hardware stores sell LOSP. Thanks also for watching and for the feedback. Cheers👍👍
Hey Shane, love that tonka material, but I don't think it is available here in Canada. At least, I've never seen it here before. And nice job on the deck. Could you finish it with a stain?
Thanks mate. Yeah you could stain it if you wanted to. I just oiled mine. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers mate :-)
au.pinterest.com/shaneconlan/my-new-front-deck/
You'll see how it looks after it's been oiled. Cheers
Sorry and one other, what sized coil nails did you use on the deck for the joist hangers? Thanks again.
38mm mate 👍
Before my Mac completely crashed I had the same problem with the browser and photos, I hope it can be saved to some point because eight years of pictures are trapped in it.
John l absolutely panicked! All my unfinished videos greyed out the photos were unclickable. Thanks to a youtube video l found l was able to get around the greyed out videos issue but the photos were a different issue. I rang up the tech guys at Mac and they didn't have an answer......not happy! Good luck with your photo retrieval. Cheers
G'day Shane, did you end up making a more detailed vid on building a deck? Again, love the vids. Keep em coming 👍🤙
Na l didn't mate...things just got a little hectic so l didn't get the chance 👍
@@diyforknuckleheads all good Shane..still loving your vids. Always good to re visit them for tips.🙂👍
@@bartbug1 👍
Shane, why did you offset the pairs of SS screws in the decking? I can't imagine splitting would be an issue in either the decking or the joists underneath?
G'day Dave.....once the joists dry out over time it does happen...l've seen it plenty of times over the years which is why w go to these jobs to repair them 👍 Thanks for watching mate 👍😁🇦🇺 I also like the look of the offset screw pattern. It breaks up the blandness of straight lines 👍👍
Need an apprentice ? Im an old lady from Canada that can't stop building stuff. I just need to learn to do it to a higher standard
Lock it in Lou-ann 😁 I'm sure you're doing a great job 👍👍 Thanks for watching 👍😁🇦🇺🇦🇺
G'day mate,
Did you have to rip a board for the end of your decking boards? If so, how did you do it........table saw or circular saw with a fence guide?
G'day mate.....circular saw with fence guide but if you have a table saw you can use that as well 👍
Deck looks great Shane! Quick question: I have a deck that is ageing and the wood is in need of sanding (again) and polishing. It's already had several sands and I'm afraid that it might be too thin to take another. In which case I'll have to replace the decking boards. The current ones are nailed in and each time I get the deck sanded the guys punch down the nails so they don't rip up the sander. What's the story with screws? Take them out and re-drill them lower? I'm debating about whether I use nails or screws if I have to put new boards in. (Oh, and yes, if I took care of the deck it wouldn't need this treatment but the situation in regard to maintenance is "complicated"). Thanks Shane!
G'day Gary. Hands down, screws are the way to go like l did in the video....and if using screws, spend a little extra and buy stainless steel ones. Use a countersinking tool like the "Macsim Clever Tool" l used and the screw heads will finish flush with the surface. Good luck 👍
Legend. Thanks Shane!
Gday mate at '5:36 ' mark....whats that board under the Main board under the joists ...not the FACE plate. Can you tell what this does/and do I need it?
Thanks in advance .
Gday mate, that was there just to hold the boards up tight to the bottom of the whaler plate (the board that is secured to the house). Since l work by myself, the board acted as a second pair of hands.....hope that makes sense 👍😁🇦🇺
You pronounce the word d*ck so funny :))))
Could you use an off cut of the joist material to make a 'scribe' if the the wall plate (plate attached the house) wasn't plumb or had a twist in it? Would this help in getting the joist end square to that plate?
bartbug1 Yes mate, you certainly can👍
@@diyforknuckleheads 👍😀
G'day mate,
another random question; with the laying of the decking boards do you have to calculate the width of the deck from the house out to the front of the deck frame ( or the first deck board layed) to enable to have a full board that is finishing up to the weatherboards, or do you just Rip a board to suit the last space of decking to be covered.
Cheers for the Vids...awesome stuff, looking forward to some more if you can this year.
Mate, l allow for a 3mm (which is normally the width of a 3 inch nail) gap between each board and finish off with the cut board against the house 👍👍
@@diyforknuckleheads thanks Scott 🙂👍
G'day mate can you explain the worth of that board under your face plate board (the one that your noggins are sitting on) with the help of those noggin plates? Thanks in advance..luv your videos. 😀👍😀
G'day mate....l'm not quite sure what you're referring to??
Hi uncle knackers, did u remove the exterior board of the house to put the beam? Did u screw the beam to the house.. Thank you
Yes mate, l screwed the beam to the house 👍👍
@@diyforknuckleheads thank u for the reply.. After removing outer cover of the house.. Did u put a peel and stick membrane for moisture and water leakage? Cheers
@@diyforknuckleheads
I live in Nsw, the ground is clay. Will there be any effect if i screw them to the house? Will it move? Especially when raining?
What kind of wood are you using for the decking?
Hi Lisa....it's called Tonka 👍👍
What's you me thoughts on the decks that look like wood but they are made of a plastic or rubber. It's hard to notice a difference between wood and supposedly it lasts a lot longer.
Not a big fan MNM. I can pick them out from a mile away. They claim to look like real wood but they don't. They look plastic in my opinion.Compare some against some real wood and you'll see what l mean. Having said that, some people love it and they don't rot. Cheers
Your right. Also Great job on the deck. I love the detail you put into making it look perfect
Where did you get the LOSP spray Shane? When I have asked for something like that at Bunnings and Home Hardware I got the (all too familiar) glazed eyes look...
I got it from Bunnings Rudyard. There are two types. One is green and the other is clear. The clear comes in a white and blue can and the green comes in a white and green can. When applying the spray to the Hardwood, make sure you use the clear one.....the green one stains the timber..l found that out the hard way :-) When in Bunnings ask for Enseal Clear Timber Preservative.....they have it. Cheers mate and thanks for watching.
Cheers mate :-)
G'day Shane, is that a standard coil nailer you used for the hangers and did you shoot through the hanger (ie not through the holes)? What length and shank type of nails did you use? I've heard of specific connector plate nailers being available, but have never seen one personally. My framing gun has a connector plate attachment but I've never used it, nor my coil nailer for joist hangers so curious to hear from somebody who has.
Hi Pete. It's just a standard coil nailer (DuoFast) and l use a 32mm rib shanked galvanised nail. I try and line the gun up with the holes on the hanger if possible. That way it minimizes the possibility of the nail skewing out the side. Have a great Crissy mate. Cheers
Ok thanks Shane, you too.
I'll give both a go and see which I prefer. Should save a ton of time!
Hi mate. Did you ever do a How to Build a Deck series? As you mention in this video?
G'day Tony, na mate l didn't get around to it but you should get the basics from the video just shown. Cheers 👍😁
@@diyforknuckleheads Great, thanks for the reply mate :
Hi I heard that Bunings DIY are going to be opening stores in the UK mainly by rebranding Homebase stores they recently brought. what
are Bunings stores like for quality and prices in Australia. Cheers Pt
G'day Paul. Bunnings in Australia has basically taken over the whole hardware scene. They are massive!! The quality isn't that bad. I spend a lot of time in there even if l don't need anything :-) Cheers mate
They are shit like all monopolies. Get you in on a special, every thing else is over priced and you get sucked in 'cause you can get most DIY things there.
E.g. recently saved 1000 bucks on (better) spotted gum deck boards by not buying there.
Your either a super marksman and managed to get all the nails lined up with the pre drilled holes in the hangers... or.. the gun has enough power to fire through the Galv. I was stupid enough to do it by hand. Arr well, I should have waited for you to show me how to do it ;0
It looks GREAT. When are you moving in?
Dead eye dick Peter :-) Na all you need to do is get the nailer close to the hole and the power of the gun will find the path of least resistance and go in or close to the hole. Mate... it makes the job so much quicker and l have to say better. The nails really get driven home with the gun. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos. Cheers mate :-)

Move in Date...TBA :-)
I like your work but I have concerns about all of the sanding you did for each counter sink screw. to me I would assume and it looks like there is spotting on the deck due to all of the sanding...did you stain it?
Thanks Dennis. Once the job was done l gave the whole deck a light sand and it came up beautifully. Check out my photos on Pinterest and you'll see the end result after it was oiled. Here's the link.

Oh great! It was my first time viewing your channel and I have not filled al the other links yet, but I will now. Thanks for the response, it look beautiful.
👌
+shaneconlan1 and you can see I can't spell that well either....cheers
LOL
what finish goes on this deck shane
Hi Ian. I finished it with a clear oil based sealer. Just in case you missed it, here is the link to the Pinterest Page with finished photos after it has been oiled. Cheers :-)
au.pinterest.com/shaneconlan/my-new-front-deck/
Yep looks good. Thanks for the link sir
how did you attach the deck to the house and how does it sit on the undersoil? Bit sketchy on that.
A bearer was attached - see about 4:45 in and again at about 6:22 - to the bearer of the house. At the 6:22 mark you can see the screws that penetrate the deck bearer, the cladding and into the existing bearer. This front part of the house has the original frame (see the earlier vids).
The front bearer of the deck is checking to and then fixed to the deck posts which are, in turn, sitting on a stirrup either embedded in a concrete footing (which it looks like these are) or attached to the top of the concrete footing.
The joists look like 200 x 45 (8 x 2s) and are fixed to the bearers with no other support than at each end (nailed and held by brackets). A tidy way to do it.
Spot on Shane apart from the joists being 140 x 45 and not 200 x 45. Thanks for answering that. I'm a bit behind with my responses. Cheers mate
+shaneconlan1 bit hard to read the tape measure from this distance :-) Tnx for the detail.
Is the gap between house and bearer not a place where moisture could collect? Or is that not a worry in your climate?
I have been following the entire build, a most interesting project. And what a difference compared to what you started out with!
looking the goods mate! where abouts r u based?
Thanks Yeeha. I'm in NSW Australia mate. What about yourself ?
+shaneconlan1 yeah nice! im in brisbane mate. ur house looks awesome so far!
Ta mate. I was up in Brissy couple of weeks back with my young bloke playing footy in the Australian Championships. Camped in at Fortitude Valley...nice place
+shaneconlan1 yeah nice mate! should make the move up here haha would love to work with ya.
LOL...I'd have to follow the Maroons then :-) Work....did you say the 'W' word :-)
is it better to use screws or nails like you are for this kind of application?
I always use screws as they never come loose and l think they look better. Cheers
if you use the right nails they shouldn't come out either
shaneconlan1 So you used screws for the actual decking boards, but for the supporting boards/timber you used nails? I think I once heard something about nails having more lateral strength. Do you think that's true?
I did use nails ArcaneCookie but l never just rely on them. I also attached any beams together with some kind of metal bracket whether that either be a hanging bracket, joist strap or a triple grip. Cheers
shaneconlan1 Riiiight, the brackets were with screws. Thanks for the response.
please don't use modwoood please don't use modwood thank goodness he used timber so pleased ,screws rather than nails , well that argument has been going round in circles for decades great job hope you're on the deck with that beer
No Mod wood around here Karl....l can't stand the stuff and yes...screws all the way :-) That beer went down well mate l can tell you that! Cheers
could you build a deck for me?
If l had the time Sharon l'd love to :-)
