Hey Scott I am a painter in Sydney and I have found that staining the timber prolongs the life instead of putting a clear. It’s like putting on a clear jumper to stop getting sunburnt instead of putting on a coloured one. Love the channel mate.
loved the advise. never thought about small head screws... what master craftsman thinks about when making something for others, your pride in the craft is outstanding! thx
Here in Aussie we always install a Protectadeck uPvc strip on top of the joists. It helps seal around the screw and deflects rain off the joists mitigating long term rot. Should be available at Bunnings in NZ.
I have 120 square metres of decking to build Scott. This couldn't have come at a better time! Love the tip to use the router on the end of each board, that looks VERY professional. Great video, thanks
Love this channel! First class always. In the US it seems everyone has gone to composite decking. High end homes may go hardwood. But you don't see it too much anymore unless the homeowner has plenty of money to pay someone to maintain it.
Cheers Bill, That's interesting. People still go with timber here but I see composite in the stores more than I used to. I haven't installed it myself.
Scott Brown Carpentry I will say that we house sat for a colleague in Melbourne over Christmas/ New Year and they had a composite deck. Man did that sucker heat up. It was fairly unbearable to walk on with bare feet. Something else to consider
Very good tips! I always does all your suggestions. One more step I do is: marking the screw line with a black chalk line on the joist before laying the “straight rows of decking”. It is fast and no more guessing.
Great advice was reassuring as I already do alot of those things but good to get another angle at it. Using the wedges was shown to me by one of my Filipino workers. So good!
Just watched this laughing at my dad extending their deck around their new "jacuzzi". There is definitely steps he could follow. Like the small piece of wood for screw placements and the tip for rounding the cut edges! Good video
I'm laughing at everyone thinking with our accent we are saying di ck... lmao. My sister in law from Australia cant help but giggle when here hubby and I start talking building decks
i like to use an offcut of decking as a story rod, i put one measured line of fasteners in, then scribe that spacing onto the offcut and notch them on the drop saw. then line up the edge of the board with the screws in the module boards, make sure the notches look rightly placed on the decking and then just run the drill bit down each notch. super fast and no pencil lines to rub out, and the notches also help stop the bit from wandering at all

Szervusz Brown, sajnos a videóid szövegét nem értem, mert csak magyarul és németül beszélek, de a képi megjelenítést amit csinálsz nagyon szeretem, és rendkívül érdekesnek találom. Another exciting episode for sure. But your accent on "deck" and references to "screw" and "screwing quick," "sticking up," "getting it all straight," "having a hardwood deck'" and finally "rub those suckers out" were just funny. I won't even go into the black marks on your palm.
Another good trick is chalk line center of joists before decking. This gives you a straight line in case your joist has a slight round and allows you to keep fixings straight over long runs.
May work with blue chalk (I have done it) but avoid red chalk. Red chalk has a grease in it that will stain the wood permanently. It’s intended to make lines last on slabs/subfloors even after rain.
In Ireland plastic decking has become very common now. It can look surprisingly good and lasts and looks good for a very long time. great in wet country's like Ireland.
I liked the tip of the round over on the end grain. I actually bought myself the Makita 18v router due to watching how many places you made good use of it here on your channel. The fact that it is battery operated and so much smaller than a typical router, I've come to use it on nearly every installation and my products are better for it! Thanks Scott!
I've binge watched many of your videos. Have enjoyed them and the care put into your craft down there in NZ. On the other hand there was just something about the way your e's in the word deck, were lighter than the harsher sounds up here in CA. perfect timing, gonna build me one next week! Great tips Scott, thanks, especially rounding of the edges and the bleeding of the wood! I am going to use hardwood by the way.
Another tip alot of guys dont know(or do know bit think its ugly) is to also space the planks where they come together at the long ends, looks way beter then you think, especially long term. it is the point were the first “faults” will show up after a few years

Hi Scott you create some amazing hardwood decks with excellent detailing. Hello Scott a Kiwi here who understands our accent! What is the bit you use that looks like it gives a round countersink for the stainless deck screws 2:22 Do you angle the screws slightly? What is the drive head type. I have used the square drive heads but if you are going into any degree of hard wood the bit can get rounded or the hole in the screw head pretty quickly. Lastly if a crew is say a 3.15mm, what drill bit size pilot hole do you typically use?

What a big deck, the Mrs has wanted my deck extended for some time. For some reason she gets verry excited by the sight of a big deck.
