Welcome to my channel, I started woodworking with my grandfather as a young boy. I continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of my fondest memories are working with my grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Jay, No need to apologize you had a great idea doing this with a tealight. We are all here to share idea with each other.
Take care my friend,
Carl
Hi, yes a glass insert is a great idea.
Take care, Carl
Thank you Alan, I think it's Mesquite it turns very nice. I too have a lot of pieces in the burn pile with daylight :)
Take care, Carl
Hi Carl, You are certainly putting your mark on Off Centre Turning, Fabulous piece of work
Take Care
Bill
Hi Skyler, That's great you're getting to spend time turning with him. Yes your grandfather is right steel wool works great.
Take care, Carl
Carl, you're a master. Keep 'em comin' and maybe one day I'll have something worth showing you.
Beautiful Carl, the mind is now working overtime, thinking of the different applications.
Take care
Mike
Hello Carl, Lovely item. It's great to find a project where you are supposed to see a little daylight through the sides. I see daylight often but not where it's intended. Seems a great wood species to turn.
Best wishes,
Alan.
Ein begnadeter Kuenstler, seine Arbeiten ergötzen die Augen seiner Fans. Ich freue mich schon auf seine nächsten Arbeiten. Danke - Edgar Kaaden
Edgar Kaaden Thank you very much Edgar
Thank you Desmond, yes like a goblet you don't have to off set it that much.
Take care, Carl
Couldn't agree more Brendan, I've got one of those, and they are a great little piece of kit. Cheers. Mike
Thank you, I'm glad you like the videos.
VERY smart move to do the off center parts before it is hallow so that you can use the tail-stock. I would have been dumb and tried it after hallowing because I would have rationalized that a lighter piece off center would be safer. It is BEAUTIFUL.
Your experiments are way cool!!
I wouldn't have 'thunk' of things like that by myself.
Great show.
You have amazing skills on woodturning. You'd be amazed how watching your videos relaxes me...
Thanks Mike. It's good to get approval on something you recommend. Other things - you know that horrible situation we all hate when you are looking at a tool and then accidentally enter your credit card numbers and security codes by mistake and click 'Buy'? Well, it happened to me again. I really need to be more careful. Video when it arrives. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Great job for #199 Carl. I really like this project. Keep up the fantastic work.
I still can't explain why I'm so amazed by this....anyways please don't stop making these videos ;)
You should give it a try! It's a great hobby
Great as always. I could watch your work for hours and hours. You deserve a full-scale TV show.
Hey Carl I wood turn with my grandfather, he suggested to me for a glass like finish to use steel wool after going through all of the grits of sandpaper it truly does look amazing. I turn wood at my high school but all they have us poplar and pine terrible woo to turn haha. Keep make interesting pieces it inspires me!
Very nice Making me think of other ways to be "eccentric".
Alan Stratton
Thank you Allan, That's a great idea I'll do one next week. Have a great time in Australia.
Take care, Carl
Very neat! I like the openings throughout the bowl.
Hi Peter,
No there is nothing wrong with it I do the same thing. I have a few video on this you can then turn the piece around and use the hole to hold it and finish the bottom. There is nothing wrong with finding a better way to do things.
Take care,
Carl
Thank you,
Take care,
Carl
Hi Carl, after watching everyone of your uploads over the years i have become a big fan of your work and your teaching skills with a genuine attitude towards your friends and fans alike by replying to comments and questions left here with a video answer which i think is great. BUT after watching "Woodturning Q&A Off-Center turning without a chuck" i posted a comment of an idea i had which this video replicates in every single way, (you can see this comment on my page)
Thanks Joe, I love that movie....lol
Thank you Pablo, I have a Delta lathe.
Thanks Andy, I would love to try a piece.
Thank you Brendan, Ya it bounces quite a bit I've looked at them before.
Take care, Carl
Shrink foil works great too.....
And good luck with making nice movies
Carl, As always an awesome video. Keep them coming.
Thank you,
Ernie
Thank you Keith, not bad just a few passes to clean it up.
That's an excellent project and unique. I've thought of another tool you need...LOL. See all that wrestling with the scraper when it's in deep...well, a Sorby 'Box Scraper Platform' is the remedy. I have one and it is superb for getting support near the cut in boxes and small bowls. You don't need to buy one because it would be easily knocked up with a steel post and a piece of flat steel. I'll send you a link in a message. Best Wishes, Brendan.
Thank you Antonio,
Thank you Rodney,
Yes that would make it much easier.
Watching your videos really makes me do some woodturning. I never tried it but it looks like lots of fun.
Very cool. I'm going to try that! I would like to tell you what I have done with my scrapers that I feel make them more useful. I have put it on the grinder (and grind upside down to get a bur that lasts probably 1 second) and round the left side back an inch or so. This removes the "corner" on the left side so that I can push or pull the scraper around the bottom of a bowl with out the fear of catching the corner. I leave the right side alone. Let me know if you would like to see a pic.
Thank you Ernie,
I think that cut at the top, gives it more of the feeling of a tea light. Soft and fragile, you pushed the edge.
Thank you Sam,
Nice job Carl!
Ya I was thinking of using the parting tool and putting in strip of wood too.
Thank you Jari,
Merci infiniment grâce à vous j'ai beaucoup appris à travers vos vidéos
Merci beaucoup! J'apprécie vraiment ça!
Thank you, Great idea,
Thank you, I'm sure you will sooner than you think.
I was blown away. Really cool dude! Now that I have a lathe, I can study the possibilities.
Thank you so much Eloy! You're off to a great start with the R2D2!!
Nice work Carl, Thanks for sharing.
Keep well.
It looks great. I'm a beginner in Woodturning and I must say you are a source of learning and inspiration for me ! Thanks a lot for your videos !
Thank you very much David, I'm glad you enjoy the videos.
I think so too I was just a little worried about turning it around to get the foot off.
Thanks Jake, I just wasn't sure so I went on the side of safety.
Take care, Carl
Thanks Lars,
Lovely project Carl, It's sparked off a few ideas for me to try , thanks a lot for sharing it with us :D
Thank you for a great idea, Carl. I enjoy trying out your ideas. Ken
Thank you Ken
I'll keep posting them I'm glad you like the videos.
Take care, Carl
a little acknowledgement would of been welcome as this was an idea i had for my fiance, after all said i will still watch your videos as i think they are a great source of information, but with the thinking that your ideas may not be your own.
regards
jay
Hi Carl. I was inspired by watching you turn the tea light. The challenge for our Woodturners Club (Pueblo Colorado Woodturners) is a tea light for November and I followed your example with a peace of Mesquite. It was turning out really nice and I was almost finished turning off the tenon and flattening the base, when, you guessed it. I had a tool catch and all I had left were pieces. What a disappointment. I will include a photo of the remains. I was thankful that there were no injuries. I have started another tea light on the lathe, and pray this one will survive. I am nearing a finish.
I appreciate the ideas I get from your videos. Thank you.
Wayne
PS
I have never posted a photo in the UA-cam comments. How do I do that?
Thank you Mike, I was think you may be able to use the groves to do some inlay.
Take care, Carl
I don't think I'll be turning anything that intense for awhile
Nicely done
timothy mcswain Thank you Timothy, it's not as hard as it looks!
Mr Carl, great video again, thanks mate.
Great idea make some pumpkins for Halloween.
Lol, sorry, thought that was the search box, great work! I aspire :)
No I was looking into getting a kit for some.
beautiful little tee light holder. Ron
Thank you Ron!!
What you do - great !!! All the best to you !! I'm from Russia, and my friends and I wish you good luck!
I love it! Wish to have tealight like this, it's great!
silkamarin Thank you
Thank you
That would probably work great you have to sand it anyway.
I have two cameras I use most of the time.
Interesting project Carl
That is a great idea Carl....
I thought maybe wrap some tape around the piece to avoid cracking?
thats really good carl it gave me some great ideas!!
Hi Jay, I'm sorry in no way was I trying to use your idea as my own. I had mentioned doing something like this with a box in the goblet video. I saw your comment and thought it was a great idea.
Take care, Carl
Great job! As always. Very inspiring. I need to try it at my woodshop. Cheers from Poland!
looks great carl,,,i used the wax and oil like you do on everything I turn,,,makes a super great finish and helps greatly when sanding,,,im going to try the offset turnings now,,,thank you
Thank you very much Jeff! I use Howard wax finish now it's a little cheaper, but works the same.
Thank you :)
Very very cool , i like it alot .thanks Rodney
thats so cool carl
Great work/vid Carl !
I use mostly Robert Sorby tools. The tools from HF are not good quality steel. They won't hold a edge or probably have a clean edge to start with. If your lathe is reversible try alternating each grit as you sand too.
cool...ya you could make the groove then fill it with colored resin sand it back to smooth...that would look nice..
Thank you Bill, How is your shop coming along?
Take care, Carl
hello Carl okay, your work is fantastic, I can always watch your videos because I have no computer and internet at home, I have a little around not as sophisticated like yours but one day I get there, I wonder what this product is that you pass to finish the play to give finishing is very beautiful, congratulations vc is an artist. Thanks for the tips.
graciously
Rogerio
Rogério Assis Thank you very much Rogerio! I finish most of my pieces with wax.
Take care,
Carl
Thank you, I'm not sure but it needs to be pretty thin so I would be careful.
nice work Carl.
Tom
I was thinking that a diamond point scraper would work pretty well, however it may leave a rougher surface on spindles.
Thank you, #200 is on it's way :)
Hi GriCo, I won't get a cheap lathe you're not going to be happy. It will cost you more money in the long run. You can find a good small lathe for between $300 and $500.
Take care, Carl
I don't think it was dry. I have turned a lot of Purple heart and not had these problems.
Thank you , You have goolden hand's.
A new chuck and following tail stock need to be invented/designed for this, And it's really easy. I suppose it is supply and demand.
No I have two and both are self centering.
Great job !
Pretty impressive
Eres un chingon !! Saludos desde Cozumel
Thank you Raymundo
Hi Carl Thanks for the great project. At the present time I am on holiday in outback Australia but I have the internet and can still get your posts. I wonder if you could make a flower vase with a test tube inside in the same manner, so you can see the glass through the wood. Maybe you could test it out for me as I am 3000 kilometers away from my lathe. Keep the chips flying Al
