Ok Mike all I can say is "WOW!" Nice recovery on the broken goblet. That's a beautiful piece of work. You are truly an inspiration to woodturners like me getting their feet covered in wood chips!
Beautiful video, Mike. The goblet looks very nice. Through a small "misfortune" (this is the goblet went broken) is again a masterpiece of you emerged. Smile when you turn 4x off center, then see the center piece as a crankshaft of the car.
Just been browsing older videos and saw this. I’ve never thought about fixing the stem to turn off centre in the vise that way before, I always thought it had to be done using an off-centre chuck.....this has opened my eyes. Like I always say, always learning from you Mike, cheers my friend 🏆👍🏼😊
Hi Mike !! Really like the zebra wood stem . I only just watched the video from the symposium and realised that what you demonstrated was a what not to do and what could go wrong as a novice turner demonstration. You are a very clever man and had the audience completely fooled !! Sorry to let your secret out ; ) Looked like you had a great time and I am so glad it was a great success. All the best !!! Andy.
Welcome back Mike and I'm glad to see normal business has been resumed. As we often say in wood turning it's easy getting yourself into a predicament and the real skill is getting out of it. You've achieved that admirably with this beautiful goblet. Best wishes, Alan.
Very interesting video, gradually working threw all of your posts. Been wood turning on and off for 35 years and is giving inspiration to get back into it. Particularly like your lathe , feel a purchase going to happen. Thanks Mike
Excellent Mike. Really nice to see how people do these fixes. I suppose it also ask the question on how many different sections can you make of different woods to create the final product. Thoroughly enjoyed, well done.
Thanks Paul, I suppose the options are limitless, only bound by your imagination...and in the case of an eccentric turning...the laws of Physics...lol Cheers Mike
Once again Mike, a fantastic piece of work. I am going to have to stop watching your videos, because my to do list, just gets longer and longer. Respect Mike.
I've turned some coventry goblets recently! Most annoyingly from a piece of spalted apple and the supplier has since vanished. The wood is very beautiful. I might have to give it a contrasting stem or something
Great job Mike no big deal on the parting off but I was glad you broke that goblet because the resulting pairing of woods was really sweet. Nice shape and execution and your little bit of skew work was really nice. Thanks for taking the time to video and share! Peace and much love from The Naked Turner
That is one superb fix Mike, the zebra wood sets it off just nice..........more Coventry goblets please ;) Great job mate as always. Cheers for now Bram
Very nice Mike the woods compliment each other nicely I think this might just have been a happy accident, a good design opportunity and a superb rescue to boot
Thanks Frank, I think it was due to residual alcohol from the Friday and Sunday night at Coventry, which I blame you for unreservedly! Take care mate Mike
I prefer to think design change rather than "save" or "recovery"! That's what I call it when I have an, er, "accident"! I like the idea of the segmented goblet. Will have to try one myself. Regards, Mike
Thank you Mike, I know my skill isn't up to the challenge of something like this, but neither is my little Coronet Model 0 with an off centre tailstock!
Hi Mike. Another great video and a good fix for the Coventry goblet, it,s easy when there is not a lot of people watching LOL. Best Wishes Alan. Ps, Diane is doing great well on the mend.
Believe it or believe it not I did mean to put in a "don't" before the "not"....but why fix the sentence when the mistake is better than the original....lol :)
Great save Mike. I worried when you glued on the bowl. I would have waited and not risk the bowl until much Could you elaborate? I like the scotch pad. Is that shop made or purchased. Looked like a stretchy rubber cylinder. I'd want 3 or 4 sized for situations like this one. Thanks Mike Alan
Thank Alan, I needed the bowl attached at this point to help me decide the proportions and design of the stem and the foot, if that makes sense. The Scotch pad is cut from a shop bought square, I actually use more of the stuff than my wife does in the kitchen! ;) Take care Mike
Beautiful work Mike, thankyou. Could you of put a wedge in the jaws of the chuck when turning the off centre, just to keep it more steady? One other thing, did you have to finish the outside of the bowl before you did the stem, I noticed a little vibration and was worried the stem might shatter. I had a job shatter on me a couple of days ago, it was about 18 inches long and about 1 and a half inches in diameter my Bowl Gauge caught on a Celtic Knot. and the bloody thing shattered. Lucky I was wearing a full face polycarbonate mask and no personal damage was done. Anyway a great clip, I don't think I am ready for eccentric turning. Thank you.
Thank you, I have honestly never felt it necessary to add a wedge in the jaws. If i get a catch, which can happen, and does, no amount of extra support is going to save it! :) Glad you came out of your catch unscathed. Take care, and thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers Mike
Beautifully done Mike. Have you every thought of putting a glass vessel in wood. I saw these glasses that I'm thinking of turning a base with kinda fingers going up the sides. I'm sure it's been done but I am going to try it. Take care my friend and do a kindness Mark
Thanks mark, I have never got around to doing that mate. I'm pretty sure that Carl did it awhile back with some wine glasses, may want to check it out for some ideas :) Take care Mike
Hi Mike, like the new intro. I've only ever manage to make one of these but I started with an off centre piece of wood whether that makes it easier I don't know.

Nice save Mike! I'm still a little nervous about trying the off centre turning. My small lathe wobbles enough as it is if it's not perfectly round.
+Woodventures
Thank you, start small and work your way up to bigger pieces as you get more confidence, that's my advice :)
Take care
Mike
Very nice Mike the woods compliment each other nicely I think this might just have been a happy accident, a good design opportunity and a superb rescue to boot

Actually, I'm thinking your 'Plan B' with the other wood species turned out (pun unintentional) fabulous! ...

I think you are one of the best turners on UA-cam.
That's very kind of you to say so Eric, but I assure you I'm way down that list, but I do appreciate you saying it.

Lol Mike...the problem is I'm making design changes all too frequently ;)
Take care
Mike
+Mike Waldt - all too frequently? Rule of thumb for me, Mike!
Fantastic, I just learned something important today. That is, seeing this, I'm really crap at wood turning!
Thank you Aeneas, keep at practicing my friend, and you will improve I assure you :)
Take care
Mike
Thank you Mike, I know my skill isn't up to the challenge of something like this, but neither is my little Coronet Model 0 with an off centre tailstock!

Thanks Alan...it doesn't always go smoothly, I assure you ;)

Mike
HAHA, I deserved that I guess :) I'm hoping not though! We will find out shortly ;)
Believe it or believe it not I did mean to put in a "don't" before the "not"....but why fix the sentence when the mistake is better than the original....lol :)
Great save Mike. I'm sure it looks much better with a zebrano stem anyway ! Take care mate, Jim
Thanks Jim...of course it does mate! ;)
