- Woodturning | Eccentric or Off Center Goblet
In this video I turned an eccentric or off center goblet out of Poplar. This was my first time turning an off-center piece. This technique creates a very unique looking piece.

i realize it is kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good place to watch new series online?
@Moses Ivan i watch on FlixZone. Just google for it =)
@Armani Jamal yup, I have been watching on FlixZone for since april myself =)
@Armani Jamal thank you, signed up and it seems to work :) I appreciate it !
@Moses Ivan no problem =)
Your advice in the beginning was really encouraging. I'm still trying to learn woodworking and metalworking myself before going on to metal forging and don't always get things right but you're right. Just because something doesn't happen to work initially as intended doesn't mean it's useless. Just wanted to say thank you.
Was not expecting to get life advice from a woodworking video. Pretty fantastic.
Rebecca Gutschow :) Thanks
Great idea, Yes a candle holder would be cool.
I love the off center turnings. There is something about working with wood . The grains, the colors. It's truly amazing and addictive. Thanks for showing your talent for others to learn. You are one of my favorites Carl.
Thank you very much Derick!
That's really good Carl, I'm impressed. Goblet offsets - if you offset on jaw 1, then jaw 3, then jaw 1, then jaw 3 etc you get a crankshaft effect. If you offset on jaw 1, then jaw 2, then jaw 3, then jaw 4, then jaw 1 (to balance the piece) you get a spiral staircase effect. The farther you offset the wider are the 'discs' of the offset. The permutations are as big as your bravery. The box idea is really interesting.
Best Wishes, Brendan
Thank you Libby, it just takes practice.
Thank you very much for sharing my videos
hi carl nice job I've been turning for laess than 3 months and the eccentric goblet I did with a captive ring withing the first month watching mike waldt and watching you work has inspired me I do something every day 7 days a week I just built a 2 foot ships cannon with the carriage and wheels
Great job Carl, and a nice idea with the box. The great thing is that once you understand the dynamic of the way it cuts, I think you are only limited by your imagination. I think your right about changing the off set, that stem should be opposite to the other one, if you get my meaning. All in all they're great fun to make.
Take care
Mike
Yes I have seen some crank shafts turned very cool.
Great looking goblet Carl. Glad that you were able to reproduce Mike's technique. :)
Yes that would make a neat effect.
Thank you Desmond, it's not as hard as it looks.
It's not as bad as it looks. Strobe light might work, or a dark piece of paper helps too.
Hi Jennifer, I've only made a few, but yes I think a hard wood is best for this type of turning.
Thank you, a lot of great ideas come out of mistakes or things not working out the way you thought.
Great project. I was watching a guy I met at the Indy Woodworking Show do a similar offset turning, but he did it all between centers. He made a plug that fit in the top of the goblet and made three dimples for the live center, then did the same on the base for the drive center. That way he could use the tailstock throughout the entire turning. I haven't tried it myself yet though. As always, thanks for posting!
Thank you I'm glad you are enjoying them.
Thank you Brendan, this was my first one I wasn't sure what it would do and I didn't want to mess it up. Thank you for explaining on how it works I'll give it a try on the next one. I'll build up my bravery a little too.
Take care, Carl
Шикарный бокал получился! БРАВО!
ARS32z Thank you very much
Thanks, A lot of fun definitely give it a try.
Thank you Tom, I'm going to try the box soon.
Thank you for subscribing, I think that would work, but you can put very little pressure on it form the tail stock. It will brake the stem if you tighten it up to much.
Thank you, I'm going to practise a little more before I use some good wood. Mike did an amazing job on the one he made.
Take care, Carl
That vase looks cool too!
Thank you Christopher,
Thank you, definately give it a try. I can't wait to see some pictures.
I NEVER THOUGHT YOU COULD MAKE A WOODEN CRANKSHAFT. COOL
For the first attempt you must be very pleased with that. Mike is a great teacher, it was his channel where I got hooked and had to watch every video. The other option to get all the stems in line off center would to have the work on a face plate. Then have two sets of holes that you keep moving the blank across. You wouldn't get the angle that you were looking at but the main stem would then be in exactly the same place on two lines.Great work.
Thank you
Thank you, Yes Mike did a great job. I'm going to practice a little more before I move on to some nice wood.
I always like watching Carl at work. He's a cool guy with zero ego.
Thank you so much!
Thanks Joe
Carl, awesome video, I'm going to try this for myself. I have to admit, watching that spin when it was off center, made me a little uneasy.
Thank you, It is a little uneasy at first. I'd love to see some pictures when you're done.
Very interesting idea Ron, be assured it will be tried.
Take care
Mike
I'm amazed at how fast you turned that. I was asked to make a set of goblets for my friends wedding and they are odd people and this looks like something they would love. Thanks for the tips and showing how it's done. That was amazing.
Thank you! I'd love to see the set when you're done. thewoodshop.tv
You've inspire me to get to the shop and make one! Thanks Carl
Hi David, Thank you, I sand with paste wax and mineral oil. It cut down on the sanding dust.
Take care, Carl
Thank you Mike, I just wasn't sure and I didn't want to mess up my first one. The video you did was great I watched it 4 or 5 time.
Take care, Carl
WOW. i cant wait to try this monday
Thank you Luke, these are fun to make.
Thank you Tom,
Thank you Charles, I was worried about that so I just took very light cut. I look forward to seeing some pictures when you get your lathe back.
Thank you Rodney,
I love the vase ! I love it when the wood can be saved to make something else. I always try to when something goes wrong ! Great job !!!
Thanks Drew,
Another interesting project Carl. Good job!
Thank you Jon, I'll do one soon
Thank you, there're a lot of great videos on making these.
Take care, Carl
Thanks Alan, I think I'm going to play around with the Poplar for a while before I move on to some nice wood as well.
Thank you Lolo,
that just looks incredibly satisfying
Thank you, I'll try one soon.
Hi Dave,
I have a Delta 46-460 midi lathe. It depending on what you are going to turn and how big. This is a great size for small things but if you want to turn larger things I would look into getting a bigger lathe.
Take care, Carl
Thank you Skelly,
Как говорится, руки золотые, приятно наблюдать за работой мастера.
Corg 358 Thank you very much
Thanks for the tip. I'll check and see if they are compatible.
Thank you, Yes definitely give it a try.
Gracias maestro por enseñarnos esta maravilla de trabajo y hacerlo tan fácil un saludo desde Cataluña España
Thank you Juan
Thank you, I hope you get a few good ideas.
Take care, Carl
Awesome work - looks like my weekend project is sorted!! Cheers
I would definitely give it a try when you get it.
I've only had one crack at woodturning when I was let loose on one at a drop-in in the late 70's., where no one showed me how to set it up properly. Needless to say, It nearly took my head off when the piece of red-gum spat out of the jaws and smash a fluro-light above me. It was so embarrassing but I've always wanted to give it another go. It's really good to see someone who so proficient and willing to give new things a go. Thanks for the demo, my daughter was amazed.
SabotPottery Thank you very much,
It's easier than it looks. It doesn't really take that long to get the hang of it. If you try it again, I think you'd enjoy it very much.

I am a luthier and not a big lathe turning fan, but I have to ask if strobotach lighting would be of any help. Basically any variable speed strobe light will kind of work. You don't want to work while it is on, but you can drop back kick on the light and the work piece will appear to stop, while it is still turning. I bought an old Oscilloscope that had a bad sync circuit and the corporation that had previously owned it decided it was too old and slow to repair, but it did make a nice 0-10,000,000 Hz strobotach for watching rotating parts appear to stand still, check for wobble and dial in their speed. 10,ooo,ooo RPM is pretty fast, and you would never see it or use it, but it worked well for their work on FAA RADAR sites. You could dial in a precise RPM and know if your part was rotating right at the specified RPM. That part will look just like it is stopped! Oh yeah, to get a better offset in the cut, I would just use a longer piece of stock. You wind up with weird acute angles, to try to cut into up by the spindle head mount. The poplar goblet still looks quite nice. That is a wood luthiers or cheaper guitar makers have used since the mid-late 1950s for electric solid body guitars. Dan Electro and Sears Silvertone (made by Dan Electro) being the most famous. Those almost always got painted some solid color. Poplar is kind of a neutral, plain grain wood. Lombardi poplar has a nice reddish color to it that fades to a browner red color. We had 200-700 pound billets of it. Lots of them! Of course, I had no way to transport it at all at the time.
Thank you Rick, It's a Nova chuck.
I examine your posts, it's nice to see your processing resourcefulness. I spend my free time looking at your works, kudos for a good explanation of processing procedures. (I see that you enjoy what you are doing, you are having a good time, I like that )
Thank you so much! I really do love turning :)
@@CarlJacobson I see you work with pleasure. That's why you're so good at turning wood.
Thank you, take care,
Very "camshaft" looking Carl!! I'd caution others not to move off center too much as the goblet end was turning in an almost 4" swing / circle and those were some fairly high speeds putting that end under a lot of stress. Some nice results for a one of a kind gift for someone!! Always enjoy your turnings!!
Thank you for sharing Carl. Very well done for first time.
+Jack Maravola Thank you Jack!
Carl I got very nervous watching the work "walk" in the chuck.
Coming from a metalwork background I'd like to see the work supported at both ends. So instead of using a ball at the tailstock end I thought a hemisphere could be substituted and have a centre hole and a number of holes at different offsets from the centre to drop the tailstock into to achieve the offset effect would be a lot safer.
Cheers Eric
Wow , nice video Carl, making a bowl in same way,-hm, i like that ! Thank`s to you. It´s pretty cool those video you making, learn a lot of it allready, so i´m a big faaaaan.
Keep Up !!
Yes definitely,
Thanks for the video. I'm gonna have to try this. Thanks again.
Браво!!! И автор очень позитивный, побольше бы таких мастеровых!
Thank you
Давно Вы занимаетесь токарным ремеслом по дереву? Это Ваша профессия, или хобби?
А дерево какой породы? Очень твердое?
egorevr I've been turning for 20 years, yes I do this full time. The wood I used for the goblet was Poplar wood, it's not very hard.
Спасибо за ответ. А тополь ведь хрупкий, и он не ломается при таких эксцентричных вращательных нагрузках?
That came out looking really cool! Looks awesome.
Thank you!
this is satisfying to watch
That is so cool have seen them before but have not seen one turned going to give it a try
Thank you, Me too I'm always trying to save very little piece sometimes too much :)
Take care, Carl
Great idea, i don't see why not if you just mark it first.
Watched very interestingly .... Looks as though I am going to wear myself to a frazzle in the process . But it's gotta to be done . We never stop learning can only be a good thing
Carl loved this project so I gave it a try.... First try, i didn't use a fingernail gouge, I used a Easy Wood Tool Finisher... Not enough gap between the sections, but it was fun. Second try, got a catch and it broke. Third try, I used a piece of pine and a fingernail gouge. Third time was the charm, turned out much better. Next time, better wood...
+Chris Armstrong Thank you Chris! It's a little tricky but it sounds like you got it
great job carl looks like fun when i get a chuck i will definitely try one
Love the box idea Carl, great video too, looks scary with the work piece spinning off center.
This was the first of your videos I watched and it's great
I am going to watch all of them.
It is really fun to browse like this and get all sorts of ideas about making things.
That's cool as hell! I've never done wood turning, although I love woodwork. Perhaps a hobby I'll try in the future.
+Kate Turner Thank you Kate! Turning really is a lot of fun.
Great job Carl! I've been wanting to make one of those for years and you moved it to the top of the list again.
Hi Miles, I haven't tried that yet but I'll do it soon.
Very Very nice piece of art, thanks Rodney
Thank you for responding. I'm getting a lathe soon, and your work is amazing. The finish on your work is beautiful. I honestly was surprised that you responded. Thanks again.
Very keen to see this hollow box
Sorry im not a Master, (actually i randomly got to your woodturning videos) but it is soooo calming to watch them and the stuff you creat looks really cool.
Greatings from Germany :)
Thank you Philip, It's about 2" round and 10" tall. The fins on this one are all at a little bit of an angle.
Wow, what a smooth and quiet machine! Also, awesome job, thanks for uploading!
Thank you!
Thank you, I did see a video like that great idea.
Thank you, I wish I could get in the shop that much :)
Take care, Carl
You are an artist sir! I've never done any turning, but recently I've been having fun watching some videos on metal work, and also wood work. This is a really fascinating idea! I hadn't thought of angling the wood in the chuck... normally if turning something like an engine crankshaft, the rod/dowel would just be moved off center.. but this was very artistic and I personally love how the angles decrease as you move towards the base! Well done... you've definitely earned my subscription! :)
Thank you, I'll check it out.
great job...ive never done this or seen it much before but i can tell you know what youre doing and did a great job (lol) keep em comin!
Love this!!! I want a whole set ;)
Soon I've almost got it set up.
