If only the bombers on DDay had been remotely this accurate, it would have made a huge difference. Most of the bombs just landed inland or harmlessly in the channel.

It's why I said most landed inland OR harmlessly in the channel.....I don't think 30,000 French civilians were swimming in the English Channel. Landing inland is a separate statement from harmlessly in the water......

Yup. The admiral didn't trust the new radar system and was worried that the bombers would strike the fleet, so he ordered them to drop over the beachhead, which cost a lot of American lives that day.

German soldiers of that time and location have testified that both the aerial bombardments and the shelling from the allied navy, completely missed the german positions.

This movie is called "My Way." The fact that D-Day is happening is about the only historically accurate part of this scene. Sure, the in-your-face destruction is done well, and there were in fact soldiers in the Wermacht from Japan, but almost nothing else shown here is close to accurate.

    • @historyonawhim648

Agreed. They make it look like there's an entire division at this little section of beach. The beaches were sectioned off into strongpoints and each had a contingent of soldiers. On DDay, while some German-held sections caused heavy casualties, were relatively light in terms of defense numbers. This makes it look like thousands of Germans were all over this section.

Well, I know this is probably the wrong channel to say that but: Actually, German troops in Omaha beach was smaller than expected. Historical filming shows how little resistance was found as Hitler's army was focusing efforts on eastern front during that time against soviets. Outnumbered after suffering heavy losses in Kursk and Stalingrad, Hitler was forced to retreat the war efforts after D-Day to Berlin. Which just prove that point of a heavily holywoodian view on that "alliance" where only soviets put 34 MILION solders against 14 million from US and UK COMBINED...

Despite the "social" in Naz1 name, there's just big rich people getting more and more... "Oh hi BMW!" or "hey Porsche! How's going after ww2 huh? feels good?!"

Why didn't the US bombers fly parallel with the coast rather than perpendicular? Wouldn't this increase the chances of actually hitting their targets?
Were any dive bombers (like the SBD Dauntless) actual used once the invasion started? Just a few direct hits on the beach defenses would have made a huge difference.
Also why didn't the ships fire "smoke" shells onto the beach just prior to the LCTs reaching it? This would have given the troops a much better chance.

Omaha Sector was covered in clouds when Allied Bombers tried to bomb it.
Omaha was also defended by the Battle-hardened 352nd Division.
That's why Omaha quickly acquired the unwanted nickname "BLOODY OMAHA".
      Then General Norman Cota said:
"Men, we're getting blown to bits on this beach.
We might as well move inland and get blown to bits!"
They moved off the beach, somehow.
On June 9th, 1944, my Cousin's Brother-in-Law died on Normandy Beach.
      He was 21 years old.
I have a feeling he must have died on Omaha.
On October 1st, 2018, I spoke to his surviving younger Brother, who was 14 in 1944, when his Big Brother died.
Even though 74 years had passed, I could still see the tears in the younger Brother's eyes. Some things you never get "over".

The landings happened and went to hell, then eveantually they brought in the naval cannons as a last ditch effort to help, and the naval guns were very effective they just didn’t think to use them as the first bombing. The bombing s prior to landing on the beach were by air, which were inaccurate. The naval guns at the end of the day saved them
