I spent 9 years in Germany up til 2000 with the British army, and married a local. Her Grandad was a disabled man called Erich, a lovely, kind and humble gentleman. He served with the wermacht in Normandy and told me his story, how he was shot in the face by a British patrol whilst in retreat from the coast. A round hit him in the cheek bone which obliterated his jaw and left a gaping hole in the rear of his skull. Despite this, he marched on foot with his platoon all the way back to the German lines over 100 miles, where he found a doctor to treat him. The doctor asked what the problem was, and Erich told him of his injury. The doctor said, well if that's true "where's the bullet then"? Erich felt the back of his bandages and amazingly, it fell out into his palm. By the time I met Erich he had been the local church organist for over 50 years, and was extremely religious. We used to visit him and his wife for coffee and cake, exchange stories and they were just lovely people. Erich used to have to hold his face while he ate, as he had very little jaw bone in his face and there was a danger he could choke on his food. He got tired quickly and suffered immense headaches regularly, so needed to lie down. Despite the sadness of his experiences at war and his disability due to his injuries he would regularly catch the tram into town to go shopping. On one such occasion he was pick pocketed and had his wallet stolen containing all his money and the bullet that he had saved and kept with him all those years. Erich had served in the Deutsche Wermacht, not because of any beliefs, but because he had to, and only had God and his family in his heart. We see these people portrayed still to this day nearly 80 years on as the enemy and as the "baddies" however, Some of those who refused to do their bit were murdered, and many of those who did were just like Erich. My grandfather's brother reached Berlin and went missing. In 1993, we received a registered letter from a certain Ada Schneitz in Russian to the old address of my grandfather in a village in the Altai, in which none of our relatives, the Usoltsevs, had lived for a long time, but it was lucky that the director of the school had a connection with the military registration and enlistment office and the letter was delivered to US. turns out to be grandfather's brother Alexei Usoltsev and lives in Canada. Berlin has indeed been awarded the Order of the Red Star. but during the year of his stay in Germany, he fell in love with a German woman, Elda Weimer, and having read that the duty to the Motherland completely fulfilled the difficult decision to stay with Elda. Together they emigrated to Switzerland and to the USA and Canada. Aleksey Usoltsev lived under the name Alex Vaimer until the age of 87, worked as a mechanic on a ship, bought a house from him 2 daughters Ada Schneitz, they never met with my grandfather Semyon Usoltsev (also a veteran of the BVO). In 1998, Alex Weimer came to visit Russia. At that time he was 80, but he was a peppy and fit old man, who spoke Russian perfectly, told an amazing story of his life, how he traveled almost the whole world. how much he missed and worried about his relatives, how once he met in the port in a Russian ship, having heard his native speech, he almost gave up everything and wanted to return, but he already had a family, and it is vaguely revealed how he will be met. The war took a lot from him, but it was not accidental either. How could he think as a kid, living in a remote village, that someday he would visit almost all the capitals of the world. In 2005, he was gone.

My uncle (a paratrooper) was killed in Crete during that invasion - I watched in its entirety a few years ago - This is a brilliant point in the mini-series, where the brothers actually exchange places - the studious pacifistic brother replaces the family Hero - the combat footage is top notch, along with the dialog and emotive tone - not many war films can claim this level of authenticity and pathos
I recently read about Crete and what a horrific waste of life it was. Young boys in their prime, landing on enemy positions, only to be disembowled by bayonets as they fought to get their harnesses off. Then when the tide turned, confused allies caught in crossfires and aerial bombardments, or being led by generals too inept to read a map. WW1 and WW2 were truly criminal in all that blood they squandered
Great Grandfather was into motorcycles long before the war, he was with the 1st Hassars Tank Battalion i believe, some point in the convoy there was a little skirmish and a German motorcycle was left abandoned by a motorized scout unit, he ended up dismounting the tank during rearming and regrouping and took it for a spin. giving officers a ride to the front and back of the columns. At some point the columns got the order to press forward and they started rolling out, there was a break in the road, one leading to a FOB in a town. and one path lead right through no mans land straight toward the German front lines. Whilst he was goofing off, he managed to lose sight of the convoy and ended up rolling down the road to the German lines, thankfully, the motorcycle ended up running out of fuel and oil due to a few well placed bullet holes in the tanks. Having better judged his surroundings and his current route he ended up turning around and walking back to the fork where a few angry officers and friends were waiting for him. He was the only man I'm aware of that was in no mans land before any big assault. all the while hooning around on a German motorcycle. Whether or not everything said is true, its broken telephone from the man himself.
Both my father and grandfather fought in WWII., on the German side. My grandpa blew off his hand, fighting the Russian. My father was a volunteer. My grandpa was a draftee. . Never lump anyone into a bag. Js

This is a masterpiece, well acted and beautifully shot, and really quite sad.Loved the characters, the most intriguing one was the pacifist brother.Attention to detail was impressive, the German kit and uniforms were very accurate. The battle scenes were great,I think it is as good as band of brothers,if not better.

My Lamprecht family came to East Prussia in the 17th century as settlers from Switzerland and the Palatinate. In the 19th century, one of them settled on the lands of the Russian Empire and Lamprecht lived happily there. In 1920, Poland came to these lands and Lamprecht became a Pole. He defended Poland in the Polish-Soviet War. He received the highest awards. During WW2, the Russians took him to Siberia to work. My father was born there. Lamprecht, taken into the Polish army, crossed the entire front and captured Berlin. There, 1945 met German POWs for registration. One of them was Lamprecht. more often than not close range fighting was done with a bayonet, even for the Americans. The MG42 was a pretty devastating weapon, but if it was disabled a large portion of the German squad's firepower was gone. Whereas if an American Browning Machine gun was destroyed, the squad could make up for it somewhat with fire from the BAR and M1 Garand.

One of the most awesome videos I've ever seen, although I'm not a fan of one soldier rushing and tearing the defences in a moment of rage without the multiple machine guns getting a shot at him.
I believe it did happen, something straight out outrages. Look at band of brothers with ronald speirs, its not unrealistic but obviously not highly frequent. Imagine you are simply reloading behind your sandbag or what not and some german comes rushing your position. Things can go really quik when you are not watching a certain angle.
My grandfather was a soldier in the Free French forces in Italy. He didn't like talking about the war that had traumatized him. He knew the horror of fighting with fear in his stomach, terrible wounds, the stench of corpses and hand-to-hand combat where, to survive, he slaughtered Germans. When he returned home, he was never the same again. He suffered all his life from nightmares and depressions. There is nothing glamorous about war. It only brings misery.

it's because it sells way better that way. people love to see explosions. also the ending in this clip isn't realistic but it satisfies the viewers who felt bad for German squad. It's supposed to be a rollercoaster of emotions type movie and that's how they do it.
Yeah, bruh. It’s a fuckin’ movie. If you want realism, then how’s about you go fire a single .40 round with no ear protection. You will be essentially DEAF for about 30 minutes. Should a movie DEAFEN you too?
I love how the German soldiers are humanised unlike so many other movies where they are just mindless evil villains all the time. This movie treats them as who they really were - humans with real thoughts and feelings.
You people don't write nonsense. Those in the Wehrmacht were the same war criminals who murdered children, women and the elderly. The Germans murdered infants in their extermination camps. Today they are trying to make themselves victims of World War II, which is completely untrue.
Is it just me or is it annoying to see people comment criticizing what’s realistic and what’s unrealistic, like to tell a story of course they need to take some creative liberties
You have a lot of veterans commenting here who have seen some shit. I myself have played castle wolfenstein numerous times so i can also comment on what is realistic and not.
I find it fun to discuss realism in these type of scenes because ive studied this a lot. And the fact that this is such a realistic movie makes people analize it more. If it was a over the top, hollywood style movie, no one would analize it becsuse no one expect it to be realistic
@@jokersnewface5318 these werent Nazi’s, these were the Wehrmacht. Which basically means the army of Germany. But in reality they were just young boys scared to the bone born on the wrong side of the war.
That is an incredibly difficult scenario.... Shoot, move, communicate. Don't even need subtitles to understand. They were one of the best infantries of all time regardless of broader contexts.

From what I've watched on this im assuming the guy that got hit by the rocket at the end was constantly suffering shell-shock but was looked after by his fellow men. His death threw thiwr leader into a suicidal fitness rage that made him run into enemy fire to avenge him. This move or series (im unsure) really knows how to pack a punch
WIlhelm was the brother of the guy who ran out at the end with the MP-40. The entire series follows the story of 5 teens. The brother joins the Wehrmacht when they start operation Barbarossa untill the chaotic retreat back to Germany, a jew gets deported, one girl becomes a military nurse on the eastern front and one girl stays in Berlin and becomes involved with a highranking Nazi member. They make a pact to be at the same place one year later but then the war grows and swallows them all in one way or another.

But most casualties soviets suffered by poorly managing the life in trenches. Health care was not existing on any adequate level. No food supplies, could not start the fire in trenches without a risk to be killed. So, majority of soviet casualties were suffered from starvation and cold. That's why GULAG system was opened in 1942 and in 1943 anyone by directive from stavka, who served in Schutzmannschaften or in any other german capacity as a soviet citizen, could join red army without any reciprocation. But still even in 1944, more then 350 thousand red army solders defected to the German side. Because soviets would draft ethnic nationalities who did not feel any allegiances to Stalin and suffered from him greatly. Like Ukrainians during holodomor. Those loses on the battle field and from defections, were filled by soviets, opening even more GULAG system and drafting now to the army ranks real criminals, rapists and such. Those convicts and maniacs in 1944-45 did a number on German women, raping most of them.
The German soldier was an incredible fighting machine, hence why it took almost a year after D day to defeat them, this does not include the waffen so in this scenario
Apparently, you Americans, the war with the Nazis began only after Day D. And judging by your comment, you fought with the Nazis only you, the rest of the Americans were just waiting for you to land in Normandy
The only inaccuracy; the Russian soldier killed by the grenade: it showed him being blown out with his body still intact. In real life, there would be bits, pieces, and parts of body, exploding, and flying in all directions. The Russians did not have rocket launchers during WWII. The first rocket launcher was actually introduced by the Germans in the latter stages of WWII. It was called the Panzerfaust, and was made for destroying tanks.

What a great story! In the middle of something so brutal and cruel as war, he still was able to find love.

@@Internetbutthurt You are not on the same level with me if you're watching this crap as educational pieces. Soviet Archives on the WWII are not opened yet. Barrier troops were a reality.

@@GielL96 that’s probably what it’s called in German.
The Russians have rpg2, because why do they need them when they have ptrs, ptrds and 45- and 76-mm guns

Lol true
Series like this are important to for Westerners to watch because we see how the average German saw the war. All sides has individuals who committed barbaric acts but the vast majority just wanted to protect the man next to them and get home.
Britain and the US did not do the things that Germany did to civilians
