- I eat at and review the 8 course Chef’s Tasting Menu at the three Michelin Starred fine dining seafood restaurant Le Bernardin in Midtown Manhattan of New York City. Chef Éric Ripert and the restaurant have received many awards since the establishment opened. Le Bernardin remains one of the best restaurants in the world.

So refreshing to see someone comfortable in enjoying a meal (life in general) by himself. Thank you for validating the solo adventure lovers
Thank you for watching!
he's not eating alone... he's eating with you and thousands of others who watch him..thats why he always looks at the camera after every bite... definitely not taking it in solo... it's for the channel
Agree. Totally. I do it all the time. It’s great. All of it.
I'm A working class guy. I have a blue collar job and my wife is well makes a modest salary by NYC standards. We do like to go to restaurants like this once a year because we really enjoy the experience and let me tell you this was probably one of the best meals I've ever had
Nice! It may be expensive, but to get an unforgettable memory and experience from it makes it worth it.
The sheer fact that they got 3 stars and maintained them ever since is absolutely insane, how do the chefs deal with the pressure ?
Woaw...
Exactly! That's got to be a high stress job.
Yes. Drinking and drugs. Yummy.
For Eric Ripert, Buddhism and deep appreciation for love. I had a chance to listen to him at a coaching/leadership event many many years ago and he stressed that everything in life comes with pressures and pain (Buddhism), but the challenge is to focus not on that (which is the normal human instinct), but on love. And often, what/who you love puts you in those painful situations to begin with. So he finds that peace and that keeps him going. And it's also why he's got so few restaurants when other people of his caliber have so many. He only expands or does something that he can say he loves.
Marco Pierre-White once said the hard thing is to get to 3 stars and after that it's a well-oiled machine, as longas you stay behind the stove it will keep up. What's hard isn't service at this level anymore, it's work-life balance.
@@jas_batailleand then he gave the three stars back because he did not want to be judged my Michelin inspectors who knew less than him. Weird , it were the same inspectors who gave the stars in the first place . White is not a very relevant chef anyway . Lots of drama .. that’s it .
Your enthusiasm is contagious. I love your energy, sense of humor, honesty and passion.
Thank you!
Nice
eating a truly special place is always worth the money. My grandparents treated me to a really nice Chinese restaurant for my High school graduation and I STILL remember the fried scallops dish I had that night. It was an expensive dish but I remembered how they wanted to take me out and they said they were proud of me and this was over 20 years ago and I still vividly remember the night.
Absolutely! It's definitely special when even a single dish can have such a lasting impact.
You have such a kind soul, I hope you find your special someone!❤
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Nah. Better to be single and FREE. No ball and chain around one’s ankle. Freedom is SO important. You lose much of that when in a relationship or marriage. 😎

My 25 year old nephew and fellow foodie surprised me with the most amazing Christmas gift, a tasting with pairing at this amazing restaurant. It was pure magic and a memory I will cherish forever! If you have the opportunity to experience excellence like this, GO FOR IT! Ripert is a genius!
That's a perfect gift! I'm glad you had a memorable experience!
you've won me over with your sentence "don't be afraid to dine alone" Because yes i am.
I know it can be an awkward feeling and I was apprehensive to do it at first, but at the end of the day, every restaurant strives to give their customers a great experience whether they're in a group or by themselves. It's definitely worth it.
Your videos are just pure comfort.
Thank you! I appreciate it!
Thanks for including us in your dining experience, James. Thoroughly enjoyed your commentary on the dishes, wonderful photography and feedback on your dinner.

Every time I eat a $1.50 hotdog at costco....I think of you. 😅
Haha! That's certainly a legendary dish!
@Jamesnu I'm bbqing up a new York strip with a twice baked potato with broccolini tonite. I love to cook. The restaurant experience has gone downhill for me the past 3 yrs.
@@TimmyCramer That sounds like a great dinner and cooking one's own meal can be very rewarding! I'm unfortunately a very bad cook so I love going to restaurants, Haha!
$0.70 IKEA’s hot dog beats that 😂
I eat 0.2 dollar bun
It’s really cool to see reviews from people who aren’t too wealthy to appreciate experiences like this. Great video!
Thank you so much!
My wife and I ate there for lunch 3 weeks ago. The most amazing meal I have ever had. The ambience, the service and most importantly, the food was exquisite.
I'm happy to hear that you had a great experience! It's definitely a special restaurant!
I appreciate that you are able to critique a restaurant while not ruining the experience for yourself. Truly enjoying all the small things, while pointing out your opinion on things as well. I see too many reviewers go all in one direction. They either hate on every small thing and don’t end up appreciating the experience, or they are biased and can’t find anything wrong at all. Thank you!
Thank you! I call it like I see it and always go in with an open mind. Plus, I want to go to restaurants that I enjoy. I'm not a big fan of going to a place just to harshly critique it.
@@Jamesnu Absolutely respect the way you do these things man. Keep it up!
When I worked on wall street, prior to everyone getting canned due to the "financial crisis", we had a tradition of dining out once a month at the finest restaurants in NYC and I will state without a doubt that it was one of the highlights of my life. We had a reservation at Le Bernardin coming up which I missed but it was probably my biggest regret
Ugh, that's a shame, but at least you can still go to Le Bernardin.
I cannot thank you enough for sharing your experience. Le Bernardin is also on my ultimate bucket list. I managed to eat at Charlie Trotter's back in the day and also Alinea, both of which were amazing. Getting to eat Eric Ripert's food and Thomas Keller's at The French Laundry are my top foodie goals. Again, your positive outlook on gaining life experiences and your generously sharing your exquisite meal are so appreciated!
Thank you so much! And thank you for watching! I hope you get to eat at Le Bernardin someday. I definitely want to eat at Alinea in the future!
I was there for the first time at the end of August. You captured the experience very, very well! I’m at 62 Michelin Star experiences, so slightly behind you. A few of your recent vids are influencing my next reservations. Thanks for the good work!!
Thanks for watching and I hope that you had a great time at the restaurant as well!
I’m at 62 taqueria restaurants!

“Life is too short to say .. someday’” that’s a good one to live by for sure
Indeed! One should take full advantage of life.
i was always taught to break bread into bite size pieces and butter each bite if butter is used. I have been to many home and restaurant meals in Europe, and one would never bite a whole roll or piece of bread.
Indeed, those are the standard table manners.
I said the same thing…. Was trying to be helpful as were you…..
But also….. he is eating continental style as well …. Fork and knife in hand….. much more efficient but……
When I went here the thing that stood out the most was the service. The waiters moved so quickly yet smoothly, like ghostly ballerinas. At one point they replaced the butter dish and neither I, nor my friend noticed. We were both genuinely shocked when we lifted up the cloche expecting to see half eaten butter, but to find it has been replaced with a new one. The food was obviously excellent too. The highlight was a lobster in a lemongrass broth, so delicate and clean.
I know exactly what you mean! That was some of the best service that I've ever experienced in a restaurant.
Did the butter taste like butter?
@@briangleason5597no..but the schnozberrys tasted like schnozberrys
Such an interesting and well thought out video, the end however was my favorite..yes.. savoring life whether alone or with another is the most important thing ❤
Thank you so much!
I love this video. It's nice to see someone who can just about afford it go as a special treat and enjoy it so much.
Thank you! I think because of how costly it was for me that I appreciated the experience even more.
So awesome! Not only is Le Bernardin absolutely perfect, Eric Ripert is a true gentleman. I'm so very happy that you had this wonderful experience! And, there's NEVER anything wrong with having these experiences alone! Very similar to this, I enjoyed Per Se solo, and have no regrets!
Couldn't agree more! I have no problems dining alone, but I know there are still many people who do and I wanted to reiterate that point. That's incredible that you got to experience Per Se. I think they just completed a renovation. Hopefully, I'll be able to visit that restaurant sometime, but it probably won't be for awhile. After Le Bernardin, I've got to build up my bank account back.
Fair play James. You are correct, life is too short! Experience's like this are what you remember, not where you bought something.
Absolutely! I'd choose a good experience over material possessions any day!
One of the greatest pleasures of my professional life was winning a competition at the CIA (1st place Chowder Cookoff) with the reward being a weekend stage at Le Bernadin! I had already committed to a full time job in Boston upon graduation, but if I hadn't I likely would have gone back to LBD permanently. There is such a level of finesse in technique in that kitchen that very very few kitchens rival. Thanks for this video! Was a great look back
Thanks for watching! That must've been an incredible experience! Thanks for sharing!
I lived in Paris for 4 yrs on assignment. It took me all of 24 hrs to become a lifelong food snob. Enjoying this channel. Very glad I found it. Brings back many happy culinary memories.

PROBABLY 1 of your best video's.
Thank you! I'm happy that you think so because I put a lot of effort into this one.
That was delightful, as are you as a dining companion - you are never really alone - we are all here having a wonderful time with you my charming friend.

Great review, James. I've always wanted to visit Le Bernardin. And this excellent review has just made me want it more. Well done!

What an experience. This is on my bucket list. The bonus dish looked so good. Great review
Thank you so much! Yeah, that was a really nice special course. I hope you get to dine there someday.
Great video as always!
Le Bernardin has impeccable food, service and decor, I’m glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you! Absolutely! It was a meal that I'll never forget!
Hell yeah dude, I love your attitude about embracing doing things by yourself. Like you said, don't wait around for someone, just do it! That's a huge part of my personality; I love doing things by myself and getting to enjoy every little bit of an experience (like fine dining) without having to entertain someone every second. I've gotten weird looks from people when I've dined alone at very high-end restaurants. Whatever, totally their problem! I'm enjoying myself like you did! Every person-man, woman, whatever-should embrace being alone once in a while and do things alone for themselves, like eat, travel, etc.
Well said! One would miss so many opportunities if they always waited for someone else.
happy 100k subs mate, you have the minerals! i enjoyed watching this and warmed to your honest yet elegant demeanour. good work
Thank you!
Amazing video. Happy it’s been watched so many times because it’s well deserved.
Thank you!
Nice review and awesome statement about enjoying life now even as a single person. I absolutely believe in this. My enjoyment of things doesn’t depend on another person
Thank you! Absolutely! We must always first be content with ourselves.
Your face of happiness in each bite of food is magic! Your videos are amazing 😊
Thank you! Yeah, that smile was stuck on my face for days afterwards, it was an incredible meal!
The huge open mouth before taking each bite is a bit disconcerting.
Another great video! I love that you are showcasing more Michelin restaurants.
Thank you! Yeah, Michelin star restaurants are probably my favorite type of restaurants to go to.
Wow James! That video was epic. As a foodie, I was just astonished at the menu , presentation and extra surprises Le Bernadin offer to make each guest feel welcomed. ( I loved the story of the guest who got up during a meal and how the staff rushed to cover the plate of food) There are some important lessons here in your video - Always say yes to a great opportunity when life presents it , Don't be afraid of dining alone and enjoy your own company , some experiences are priceless and deserve a splurge! Great video and lessons here my friend. 🙏🏼 - Now I want try that Brioche and side potato that accompanied the fish !
Thank you so much and thank you for the kind words! Yeah, the service at the restaurant was phenomenal! I felt like they could deal with whatever request or happening in the dining room. Indeed, that one potato bite was incredible and that brioche was very satisfying!
James, this was the first video of yours that I’ve seen, and what a treat! As a lifelong New Yorker, Le Bernadin has been on my “someday” list as well. For awhile, friends of mine and I would do a Michelin star restaurant every month, which was a wonderful experience, but the group broke up before we got to Le Bernadin. Thank you for putting it back in might sightline And to becoming a new subscriber! I’m looking forward to other videos of yours.
Thank you so much! That sounded like a great group. It's hard to find people that really appreciate fine dining especially with the high prices those restaurants command. That's partly why I eat at most of these fancy places alone, but I have no problem with that. Indeed, Le Bernardin is a very special place!
@@Jamesnu
You have a talent for talking about your food experiences! I'm a new subscriber because of your presentation and his background information you discussed! ❤
One thing to note, the breads should never be bitten into; instead, break off a mouth-sized piece and then butter it. This is really helpful when eating a hard roll or baguette. It stops you from yanking and pulling on the bread with your teeth. Small bites are better than big, wide open mouth bites of any food. This is a more refined manner of eating bread at restaurants.
Your video: 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟♥️🎉🎉🎉
@@tomvalveede6808 Thank you so much! I really appreciate the support and suggestions!

James, I hope you're ready for the new holiday season!
Yep, it's a great time of the year.
Great video! Thanks for not being obnoxious in any way and not overly gushing (as I have seen from others) but rather honest and genuine. Love that you enjoyed it so much, too! I hope it won't be the last of your top fine dining experiences 😉 it was getting emotional towards the end...I agree, it's nice to go with others but sometimes things don't always work out like that but that shouldn't stop you from seizing the opportunity when it appears.
If you ever find yourself in London, Core by Clare Smyth is outstanding.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate the nice words! I definitely have more top tier fine dining restaurants to go to in the future. Indeed! I've heard of Core and I really want to visit someday!
Hello, James!!! 😃 What a delight to see a video from you. I love living vicariously through you at these nice restaurants. Lol!
Thanks so much and thanks for watching!
I lived in NYC for quite a few years, but am not there now. My last trip there, I walked down from the hotel near Central Park South to meet friends at the Grand Central Oyster Bar. I stopped in Le Bernardin to look at the menu. As I was going through it, a couple came in and said to the Maître d' that they were there for the (famous) architect, César Pelli's 80th birthday. What a great choice to treat this famous man!
Indeed! Le Bernardin is a great place to have a celebration!
Le Bernardin appeared to be very accommodating for you. Thanks for the visuals.
Thanks for watching! Indeed, the service was great!
I don't know why I torture myself watching these videos. I'll never be able to afford a trip to a place like this, no matter how much I may want to.
Never say never! I really hope that you get the chance to dine at a place like this.
I've been to La Bernardin twice for their pre-theater prix fixe. They take notes on your visit and ask if you'd like the same cocktail you had when you were there before! My favorite dish was the sea urchin served in its spiny shell! The whole experience is spectacular!
Nice! Yeah, that's definitely the mark of a great restaurant!
I sometimes get yelled at because of how much I tip. But to me it’s super important, it shows your appreciation, and the staff will remember you!
Absolutely!

Great segment James. I am glad you so thoroughly enjoyed yourself at this fine establishment. I have dined there a few times through the years and the experience has always been extraordinary. I may be mistaken but Le Bernardin usually is listed as one of the top 3 restaurants in Manhattan year in year out. Keep up the great work James!

Going to Daniel next month for my solo-treat myself dinner. You should try Per Se as well. I think that's my fave restaurant of all time. However, it is a bit more expensive than LB. I saved my pennies to go there, and was blown away!
Fantastic! I hope you enjoy Daniel! Yeah, I really want to go to Per Se, but like you said, I'll have to save up for that one.

Thanks, James. I enjoyed a look in side Le Bernardin. I'm surprised the menu is that big. I've spent more than that on an unexpected car repair and had the opposite of a great experience so don't feel guilty about planning to do something special!
Yeah, I typically don't see fine dining restaurants have menus that are even half the size of Le Bernardin. Exactly! Every once in a while one needs to just forget about the cost and embrace the experience.
You strike a wonderful balance in your reviews, James.
Thank you!
On my bucket list, glad you were able to experience it. Great video
Thank you so much!
This has to be one of the best videos you have ever done. So glad you did this. Amazing restaurant. Wow. Talk about the creme de la creme. The food looked amazing. The service too. The environment. Classy! Loved all the wood in the ceiling areas. I also agree so much with what you said towards the end. Go out there and experience things. See the world. Even by yourself. It’s ok. You really don’t have to be with someone to enjoy it. Unless you are one of those types that are sensitive and can’t be alone. I’m not that way. No. I’ve lived in other countries alone. Traveled alone. All of it has been great! So glad I did. Keep up the good work. Thanks for this video. A very special one! 👍🍷🍸🥂

Totally worth it. Life is indeed short and those plates should be displayed at art museums. They looked incredible. Sure, you can find great food from humble street vendors and UA-camr's such as Mark Wiens prove that but the Michelin starred restaurants take you to another world.

amazing ... the dishes -- usually a fish of some kind, a vegetable component, and a sauce -- look simple ... but precisely for this reason, there's no room to hide ... watch season 5 of Top Chef to see more of their dishes (at least at that time) ... the one that caught my eye, roasted monkfish sitting on a dab of miso paste, a mushroom stock poured around the fish, the vegetable component being mushrooms, placed on top of the monkfish ...
Indeed! The food at Le Bernardin is tailored perfection! I haven't seen that season of Top Chef yet, but that sounds like a delicious dish!

The Pounded Tuna is Always a must, as is the Salmon Rillette. I once dined by myself, at the bar for four hours. I just said feed me. And Aldo matched course for course. Le Bernardin is the best restaurant in the world!
