UNDERCOVER at Le Bernardin! "World's Best Restaurant" Honest Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 кві 2024
- Le Bernardin is regarded by many critics and publications around the world as the best restaurant in the world. You read that correctly, the best restaurant IN THE WORLD! The French publication La Liste ranked it No. 1 this year, last year and several years ago they did as well. Other publications rank it either No 1, No 2, or have it consistently within the top 10. For the entire world, that's pretty good!
A big reason why Le Bernardin is so well known is because of the friendship between Chef Eric Ripert and Anthony Bourdain. The late great Anthony Bourdain loving Ripert's cooking is enough to already give it great legitimacy! But how good is one of the best restaurants in the world? A restaurant that regularly makes the list of 50 best restaurants in the world to me must be mindblowingly good to receive such praise. Is it truly that much better than all the other best restaurants in NYC? Some of the best foods in NYC that I have eaten are not even fancy places. Is Le Bernardin truly that much better than say, Katz's Deli or L'industrie Pizzeria and other iconic restaurants in NYC or iconic restaurants in the world?
We will find out together! We can't quite afford the Le Bernardin Chef's tasting menu, but we can try the Le Bernardin Lunch Pre-Fixe menu. They did not let us film inside the dining room, but we did it anyways to bring you guys the content and an honest review as always. Hope you enjoy the content and the review!

This salmon unlocked an previously unthinkable squint level in UA. He looked downright disgusted, which can only mean it was the best salmon he's ever had
lol
we need a UA squint graphic/tier list
He needs to have an artist crate a squint picture for his UA-cam avatar.
He becomes very slitty when he is a happy boy.
UA went FULL TURTLE FACE
Tina ordering a dish you were allergic to was a pro move
😂
Sounds like he is adverse to fine dining...
@@RussianNightmare It's an allergy
“Chef Ripert clearly knows what he is doing.” The chef’s career is now complete
You know the food slaps the more intense the squinting gets lol
😂😂😂
Yep 🤣
He must be making good $ from YT to eat here.
@@the-infinite-one-5390 the full dinner is fairly expensive. The 3 course lunch that he had was less than $200 so in range with what a meal at the steakhouses he’s regularly reviewing would cost in total for two
@@the-infinite-one-5390 UA-cam isn't his entire source of income and isn't paying him much with 51k subs; he does have a regular job. $127 is a splurge that almost anyone in a first world country can afford if they really want to try it (i.e credit cards).
Bro that restaurant is famous most for its sauces and you're just picking up the octopus without soaking up the sauce with it.
The sauce . . . Yup Alexander the Guest would have spat out his drink of Krug if he saw that. But seriously I don't think he understands French cuisine. It is all about perfecting the sauce and harmonizing it with the protein. What he did was like taking a piece of nigiri and picking up the fish without the rice.
I do appreciate him trying stuff out of his wheelhouse. If he is still doing these videos years from now, his experience and palette will surely evolve.
When you dine, you dine. It's about remembering the dish you had for many years after. And that's worth the price. I had the pleasure of eating there a long time ago. I felt like Neptune picked the food that I ate that night. It was amazing.
Ok
Table etiquette: Always tear off a piece of bread, then butter it and eat it. Don’t pick up a whole piece of bread and bite some off.
Hahahahahahahah. That's funny AF, but true. UA can be a bit of a 'caveman' sometimes but we love watching his videos.
I was saying the same thing to myself.
Always judged my dates when they took me to good restaurants by how they ate the bread or rolls. It is not your mammas table honey.
Thanks for the tip. I’m going there next month.
who gives a fuck
I cannot stand when people complain about small portions at fine dining restaurants. the point is to experience unique food bites. not got stuffed. you want quantity, go to golden corral
The ones I’ve been to may not have huge portions yet neither do they leave you hungry. Being left hungry at huge expense is not justifiable.
@@roboliver9980 I never leave hungry. It’s all about the courses. 7 courses or more winds up being a lot of food. If each one was a large serving, it’d be like a food challenge rather than a relaxing dinner. Order the wine pairing with your meal, and you’ll be struggling to finish
Who's talking about getting stuffed, I'm a small person and on average eat one good meal a day and maybe a light salad in the evening. I have left Michelin restaurants and was still hungry.
I understand the point is not to be stuffed, but for the price, would it really hurt to give you more?
You can experience good food in a bit larger quantities for sure. Sometimes it is indeed too little. You don't need to get stuffed, just need a little more, for convenience
It wouldn't be Manhattan without the scaffolding.
Local Law 11 😀
The no filming makes sense. IMO above a certain price point you kind of want to enjoy your meal and not worry about being in the background of someone's video. That dessert looked amazing
There are hundreds of videos online of this restaurant. Why they lied? Who knows.
If you didn't have the full tasting menu, you didn't really eat there... :|. It's like going to Katz only eating the pickles and calling it mid...
FYI, the salmon spread is called salmon rillette... Poached salmon with lemon, herbs, usually butter/sour cream/ mayonnaise or some combination thereof. Basically a better version of butter that you spread on bread as a canape.
UA was served a weird one though, since rillette is a medieval way of preserving meat by coating it in butter, not sure I would want a rillette to be made with mayonnaise. Due to its own overpowering flavor it's hard to elevate mayonnaise in the same way that butter can be elevated. Dishes that are heavy on mayonnaise rarely tend to be more than the sum of their parts whereas herb butters can be fantastically complex. So I can understand why UA was underwhelmed by salmon in mayonnaise.
@@SeraphimLeo except that I’m almost certain that UE was wrong that it was actually mayonnaise. I enjoy his videos, but not because he has the most sophisticated palate or offers especially accurate descriptions of what he’s eating
His palate sucks. He would be better off eating a Happy Meal at McDonalds
@@monkeyballs512 Good point, I hadn't considered that.
Wow. UA even changed the music.
The most obnoxious person on earth
Wow , ua listens, attempts, but stays true to what he wants, legend
oh ha yeah, the music :) yeah the music did start to irritate me. I mean the previous music :)
The only video I would've genuinely enjoyed the circus music. At least he still mispronounced the name of the restaurant.
@@James-xb8dd I don’t find UA obnoxious, and I’m not sure why you would
UA filming a video at his anniversary dinner with Tina LOL. That's brilliant.
Not his best review either… should just enjoy this dinner without filming a video.
He’s better for casual eats and then steakhouses for his higher end stuff.
His bill is a tax deduction since he's filiming...smart move.
Expect nothing less from this dude... Tina should leave him.
@@couloir1 do people really report youtube income to the IRS???
@@k1z603 you’d better believe it. Big time content creators are making hundreds of thousands and even millions. I don’t know that UE is at that level yet, but I guarantee you that you’ll be nailed by the IRS if you make that kind of money and aren’t reporting at least a substantial amount of it
Salmon would have been the last thing i would order there but your squinting may change my mind. And how can you expect large portions?
I guess UA is not used to fine dining. Its about the quality, taste and the incredible experience not the portions.
Really cool.. thanks for sharing the experience with us!
Great and honest review UA ... and the music is infinitely better 🤣👍
It was a shit review by someone who has a palate of a 8yr old.
Your grimace, when you really enjoy the taste of something, must send the wrong signals to the staff LOL.
Now think how Tina feels when he unloads....
It's called a TASTING menu that's why it's little, because your going to keep getting more dishes !!!
Been waiting for this! Next Jean George’s
Love your show, have been watching while recovering from knee surgery. You are a fantastic food reviewer! You really make my day!!
The secret is always.... More butter....
It's sauce.
and salt!
I went for lunch there in 2015. It was very chic and they gave me a banquette seat table for 2 people which was great. I love that the sommeliers have a wine tasting cup hanging on a chain around their neck!!
It was $90 for lunch and the tuna and foie gras was my favourite dish.
There was a whole lot of eye squinting going on at Le Bernardin. The food looked amazing! Liked your new duds, too.👍
I feel like I would have to go out to dinner after eating that dinner!!!
Yes, Inn n out is a good post sushi meal, similar sort of feeling with this one
He couldn't afford the real experience that's the issue
The more expensive the joint the smaller the portion.
Yeah, he probably headed over to one of the $1 slice pizza places... :)
Hardee’s?
Never change! You are authentic and I enjoyed your honest, UA take on Le Bernadin.
Thanks for the review, UA! I've eaten here a handful of times, and always enjoyed. The quality of their dishes is second to none in the seafood world, and I try to enjoy it at least once a year.
If you ever get a chance to go back, do the Tasting Menu. For sure the most bang for your buck of all the 3 ⭐️ restaurants in NYC. Actually a great value and amazing experience.
Good advice generally, but UE has some allergies that would make that more than a little challenging for him
Very excited to see that you gave Le Bernadin a try. I went there for lunch a few years ago. I didn’t find it too “stiff”. It looked like it had an older customer base from what I could catch of your video.
You don’t eat a baguette like you did at a 3 star restaurant
That salmon looks mouthwatering from here. Good review. Yeah, I probably do it as a one time experience.
When you're in a French restaurant, don't expect a generous portion size. 🤣🤣🤣
With the way you squinted as you were veing engulfed by the first bite of the barely-cooked salmon, I kept saying, "Dayum! ..dayum! Daaaayum!"
I love how you convey the tastes of everything. Subscribed.
I love Le Bernardin when it got 4 stars in the times . Only place to keep 4 stars in times and 3 Michelin never fell below . Also great deal for 3 course meal
If I was a waiter and saw that face after trying I would be like "oh oh" lol
My favorite out of NYC, London, Paris, california etc. it is perfection on every level.
when you close your eyes we know its good!
Or that he’s getting a handy under the table……
Do you go for a couple of slices of pizza after that?
drip on point!
I live in Rochester NY headquarters of Wegmans I'm sure Danny Wegman would love the comment about the foccia bread
Absolutely, but it’s an absurd statement
the second i saw the video, I knew this dude was going to complain about everything. 5 min deep, hasn’t said anything positive yet 😂
Kind of the same reason I don’t take my mom here.
Great job!
Did you proactively ask if you could film or did they see your camera and tell you not to film?
It’s not my cup of tea for 130 bucks but I’m glad you enjoyed it. Great video!
Thank you for the video...very enjoyable...new 🎶 🎵
Welcome to the world of upper echelon of fine dinning! Its all about quality of the dishes that are presented to you. Glad you enjoyed! BTW don't spend so much time on the bread n butter. ❤
It’s definitely worth the price because whenever you eat salmon or octopus you’ll remember how special it was at Le Bernidan.
Leveling up 🎉🎉🎉
Bucket list destination ❤
First off #1. I found the piano splashes presented upon UA's new music to be quite accordingly & elegant 👍 #2. The octopus with Chorizo sauce looked intriguing. I'd DEF would want to try that salmon in the truffle sauce & the chocolate dessert looked decadent !
That watch and suit was on point.
Wow, UA is going upscale today; no ribs and brisket meals served here. That's a great great restaurant, enjoy! 😊
Let Bernardin is one of my fave restaurants! ❤ looking sharp UA!❤
I think it's safe to say that UA shouldn't be going to a restaurant like this when he's comparing to Katz's Deli... Thanks for another video UA!
Thanks for taking us to Le Bernardin in New York. I guess the price is on par with any Michelin restaurants in Manhattan. I would like to suggest that you try Les Grands Buffet in Narbonne, France and according to Tim Lee who's a food vlogger, it is the best buffet restaurant in the world. I haven't been there but it is on my bucket list. The price for the buffet is around $70 which is absolutely amazing. One can't possibly eat everything offered in one sitting, so you may have to visit a couple of times or may be more.
Congrats on over 50k now on to 100k keep up the great work
I lived in NYC and ran one of the finest wine stores on The upper east side back in the 70's/80's until 1992...I was at the opening of Le Bernardin and dined there lots of time, even when Anthony Bordain worked there...I left NY in 1998 and still miss the restaurants...As a world traveler,NY..still has the best restaurants...
no way. London is far superior. I went to NYC in 2018, and the quality of ingredients is pretty poor. I was really disappointed with the quality of restaurants. US has stagnated food wise. In the 1980s and 90s, it was very good.
@@djpeekay25 I travel to Europe often, and also London and The UK...You probably did not know what restaurants to eat in..so many Ethnic foods to choose from, and some even better than the country itself...I live in Florida and have been to Turkey, one Turkish restaurant where i live is better than the food i had in Turkey.
@@neilcharles2520 that’s a tall claim. London has far more variety as well as it’s far more multicultural.
@@djpeekay25 You talking about London or the whole of England?Where is London can you walk about a mile on one street and find over 20 ethnic restaurants?Even Portobello market don't come close..

I can't go often but I have always been very satisfied there...even considering the price.
No filming yet you filmed most of it. Explain grand master of squint 😂😮
Now this is a good review sir !!
Portion size really? Did you just compare a three star with Wolfgang’s steak house? You’re better than that UA. That’s like comparing a Ferrari to a Chevy.
Wolfgang’s isn’t a Chevy. It’s also tops at what they do, but it isn’t haute cuisine
@@monkeyballs512 Wolfgang has Cut with one star, and Spago has two. I’ve dined at both and even with one star Cut is not comparable to Le Bernardin. Wolfgang’s steakhouse is fine at what they do but it isn’t at the same level
@@mikek6313 not Wolfgang Puck 😂😂😂. The steakhouse Wolfgang’s operated by Wolfgang Zwiener. And, no, it is not a Michelin starred restaurant, but it is as good as a traditional NY steakhouse gets. My point is only that Wolfgang’s isn’t a Chevy. It’s not a 3 star Michelin restaurant (I’ve been to Le Bernardin and it was wonderful) but it is a high end restaurant in its own right and one of the best in the world at what they do
Best meal of my life. Want to go back and do the wine pairing
That kind of meal without wine is a sacrilege 😔
To be clear when I went, I sure as heck had wine. I want the full chef’s tasting with wine pairing!
@@darklordlc I was referring to UA.
The pricing was a deal! Remember, you’re paying for the service and environment as well: an orchestral experience, a memory. I’ve been lucky to go to several Michelin starred restaurants but not Le Bernadine yet.
Nice review, glad you could get that video in... For that price they should hold the camera for you😅... Too bad the better the food the smaller the portions
The octopus looks legit mouthwatering good
Cmon man, if you’re looking for huge serving then clearly you did not research much.
More stars = More money = less food. I've been to MANY Mich star places. One place that has consistently caught my eye is French Laundry in CA. If you watch Anthony Bourdain's trip there, it's a LONG experience with a ton of courses.
At this point, I'm basically over Michelin star places. It's SO expensive, and just nuts. Im tired of going to places, + 1500$ later, for 2 people.
French Laundry actually is a good "value" as a Michelin 3 star restaurant, as funny as that sounds, since the tip is included in the price. There truly is a lot of course that showcase their culinary prowess.
Well, get your name on the list now if you’d like to eat there in 3 or 4 years assuming you aren’t a very prominent person
@@monkeyballs512 you can also use Tock to book a reservation when they release them. Just have to be quick and take what is available.
@@alim998097 I agree it’s the only place left I want to go to for a starred place. Other than that, over it haha
@@monkeyballs512 I know. That’s the other thing, have to plan years in advance, that really grinds my gears! ⚙️
French food is always small portions and incredibly delicious. You want more , you wish you had more , that’s the point .
I have had lunch there twice. Like you, I think it is good and not overpriced for what it is. Like you, it would not be in my top NYC restaurants.
My wife and I did Daniel for dinner on an anniversary, and that sent us over the moon.
Daniel is more highly regarded today. These things change regularly, and Le Bernardin isn’t the hit new thing anymore
UA what are those little things in the truffle sauce? Looks like tiny pearl onions and carrots cut to match the onions size and shape.. oh I wish I had that chocolate dessert RIGHT NOW!! 😁 love your vids by the way 👏👏👏
UA - Truly enjoy your content, and your honest reviews. But, big sandwiches and portion sizes don't apply at a place like this. Judge on the quality not the quantity of the food
Went to a fine dining venue years back, then headed straight to Beefsteak Charlies to fill up!
I've eaten there three times, food is amazing. I was not crazy about the dining room layout one of the times. They change it pretty often. My personal favorite restaurant is Daniel, I've eaten there many times, and was blown away every time.
Can you do a vs series of chain restaurants? Like texas roadhouse vs outback?
Not a bad idea!
Day 1 of asking for a Korean BBQ Restaurant review
Looks great, but I can tell, I'd need a hot dog or burger an hour later..😂
Another great review UA.
I’m blessed to be able afford these restaurants to a certain extent, but I’m done now.
The full lunch tasting menu with wine paring is $500 per person?
For lunch?
Sorry……..
Anyhow great review and you’re looking sharp 😎
You can’t really complain about portion sizes in 3- star restaurants when that’s expected
Also normally you're getting 7-8 courses. How else are you going to eat that amount of food? Ironically UA would have probably gotten better value if he went for the regular menu.
You clean up quite nicely! Love the honest and balanced review.
Meat and potato guy visits joint and gets no meat and no potato. Pretty good review, considering that significant handicap.
Ill bred Asian.
Problem is, food doesn't get much better from $20 to $100. In other words, a $100 steak is not 5 times better than a $20 steak.
That $20 steak is more like $50 these days
That depends. There are a lot of restaurants dressing up 20$ steaks and charging 100$, so yeah depending on the restaurant there may not be a big difference. But if you know how to cook and educate yourself on the differences in produce and the different cuts there is actually a massive difference between 20$ steaks and 100$ steaks. But a restaurant would charge you 300$ for the latter. I can't imagine not being able to cook.
that's why a lot high end restaurant tasting menus don't have steak anymore..... if they do, will be A5 wagyu...
I couldnt tell if you liked the fish or not when you took the first bite. 🤣🤣 But it was all happiness!
This is going to be very interesting since UA doesn't do shellfish or drink alcohol. That eliminated the regular tasting menu or the wine pairing which is half the fun.
ocean bugs and sour grapes. you are not missing out
non alcoholic pairing can be more challenging and exciting
There is a place in Montreal that's a short plane ride from New York. It's called Au Pied de Cochon. They have amazing food and I am sure you'd love it.
Thanks for sharing a place I’d never go to even if I had substantial disposable income. I want value and decent portions for my dining experience. Nice review though, and great that you were still able to record, albeit underhandedly.
Look pretty much only the one percenters can walk in and order whatever they want . Yes the more you spend the higher quality and more choices you’ll have sometimes the only difference is the dishes will have more and higher quality caviar or large fresh slices of the finest Truffles depending on the time of year and season . But even ordering the least expensive Pice Fix lunch menu with choices and only 3 courses should be able to show the quality and presentation and service of a 3 Michelin Star restaurant. You did a fabulous job reviewing especially keeping your head down for the no video or photography rule which makes sense . They don’t want other restaurants copying their signature dishes and plating and garnishment as well as respecting the privacy of their extremely high class under the radar very high net worth and celebrity clientele.
Went to lunch there on MLK Day as otherwise I'm both on the wrong side and wouldn't have enough time. Started with their famous raw tuna dish followed by the hiramasa and then the pistachio dessert. All were excellent though my favorite was probably the dessert and appetizer. Also their best bread was the walnut cranberry loaf.
The picture you flashed with Tony made me actually tear up.

UA can you do a review for tad’s steaks in New York ?
Fine dining is lost on my very lowbrow palate, so I'd never eat in a restaurant like that, but it was cool to experience. Nice review.
i have a good palate and love cooking fancy stuff, but kinda dislike fine dining restaurants...i want a full plate of food ridiculously amazing food, hell.. 3 full plates.... not one tiny thing in the middle of a big plate...like most things, i blame the French
Big money small meal. OK if you just want the experience which is valid if you are loaded. If you don't want to leave a restaurant wanting another meal don't bother.
Not accurate. The portions are small individual tastes, but if you have 7 or up to 14 courses sometimes, you’ll be plenty full at the end
@@monkeyballs512 not for this money. You saw the prices for the tasting menu. Ruinous.

Matzah balls the size of peas I'll bet 😅
Why don't you use the provided salt shaker?
I might be a rube but I feel like you shouldn’t have to season your own food at a three Michelin star restaurant lol
Most top restaurants won't over-SALT the food because many patrons may have health issues; hence use the salt shaker. Agreed.
IMO the very best and consistent restaurant in Manhattan. The seafood is prepared unlike any other restaurant I have ever been to and the overall experience is hard to equal. I know the $325 tasting menu is steep, but that is really the sweet spot for LeBernadin. Love the squinting UA
Never been there but love the owner (from Bourdain show) but UA must 'save up' for the full course, NOT the lunch special. Once a year or lifetime splurge is no big deal; not eating there on a regular basis.
@@johnc3886 Agreed. I have gone there 4-5 times in my lifetime and I am my mid 60s. (and have lived around NYC my entire life). Since I am now retired, I won't be back given the price point. It's ok though, as I am glad that I actually went when I could. Stay well and best to you and your family.
