Eating at Delmonico’s. NYC. One of the Best Steakhouses and a Legendary Restaurant

- I eat at and review Delmonico’s in the Financial District of New York City. The restaurant has been around since 1837 and is considered to be the first fine dining restaurant in America. Several dishes have been invented at Delmonico’s including the Baked Alaska and the eggs benedict. Delmonico’s is also recognized as one of the best steakhouses in NYC. They’re famous for their signature Delmonico cut of steak, which I try among other courses. After a three-year closure, Delmonico’s is once again open.

The fact this channel isn't casually sitting somewhere between 700k to 1.2mil sub's is criminal the production is there and he's charismatic & handsome. UA-cam algorithm is dumb.

I have many books describing dining at Delmonico's from the days of the early 1900's to today & it sounds amazing & this video shows how amazing I actually have a book with many of the famous recipes as well as pictures I love history of New York!
Nice! The restaurant is certainly legendary!
I looked up the inflation rate for 40 cents in 1876 because I was curious about just how expensive that coffee was, and 40 cents was the equivalent of over $11 in today’s money. I guess this restaurant HAS always been super expensive haha. But from this video, it seems like it’s worth it, at the very least for a once-in-a-while special occasion
That's interesting! Thanks for looking that up! Yeah, it's expensive and is definitely a special occasion type of place.
Yeah it's Delmonico's right?
Actually 11 $ for a cup of coffee in such a high end restaurant is not that expensive, depending of the blend served. Indonesia (Sumatra) Kopi Luwak blend would fetch 100 $ a cup. Brewing that blend at home in your own machine would come to 10 $. a cup. Needless to say that blend is purely exquisite.
@@lucboulanger8128 Yeah, as a coffee fan, I know how expensive certain coffees can get.
Those columns in the front of the restaurant are from a Roman building aren't they??
Dude, you have an $80 classic steak and you deny yourself a glass of red wine with it? Come on.
Right?!
Yeah, I should've at least have gotten a glass.
Rookie.
Just give me a glass of coke and I’m chillin
Coke Caine and cigarette

Bread Etiquette: In the U.S. break a piece of bread and then butter it before eating. No butter sandwiches or buttering a full slice of bread without breaking it first.
Sauce Etiquette: In the U.S. use a teaspoon and place the sauce on the side of the steak and not on top of the steak. Dip from the portion from the side of the steak and not from the serving dish.
Please don't lick your knife. That's dangerous, and you can hurt yourself.
Glad you enjoyed the food. Lovely video.

Great segment James. I was taken to Delmonico's many years ago for a business dinner and was wowed by the atmosphere and quality of the food. Service was highly attentive too. Your expressive style is great as it shows you really enjoy your food. Keep these videos coming and have a great rest of the extended weekend.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! Indeed! Delmonico's is a special place!
Yes it's had been a great place. It actually earned the reputation unlike say Peter Luger that is just all marketing. Glad to see it's back up and running and maintaining the standards.

Completing my "binge" watching of your many offerings and I still marvel over your enthusiasm & joy for food & travel. Since subscribing to your channel, I have been pleased to see the steady increase in the numbers of views & subscribers. Yes, a true testimonial of the quality of your videos & reviews. Also, you have now obviously entered the realm of notoriety based on the numerous nasty critiques / comments issued for this review alone!. I am impressed by your handling with grace & patience to these verbal "slings" & "arrows"! Definitely, you were raised well by your parents. If I may share a personal comment about Delmonico's, my great-grandfather (Dominic Gandini) served many years as a line cook for the restaurant during the first two decades of the last century. Food & restaurants in NYC is very personal for me & family. This is Peter, & thank you for sharing this post!
Thank you once again! That's a neat connection to Delmonico's. Yeah, I love food and it was a real treat for me to dine at this restaurant. It was one of the most memorable meals I had so far this year.
I enjoyed your presentation and loved seeing the menu and the final bill. Looking forward to going there and enjoy the experience! Thank you
Thank you! I hope your experience at the restaurant is just as good as mine or better!
First time viewing. I really enjoyed your video and the details you provided about the place, food, menu, staff etc. Thanks.
Thank you! I'm glad that you enjoyed it!
Thank your for this video, a dream came true! I found you coincidentally on the last weekend and am really enjoying your content. I binge watch an abundance of your videos everyday and now at the right time you deliver the restaurant I am looking forward to the most.
In the Netflix show 'The Alienist' the characters are dining at Delmoico‘s multiple times and while following those well written dialogues I was in awe of the authentic scenery with those humongous paintings and the similar sized round dining tables with white tablecloths and antique silverware. Since then I followed the developments of the restaurant; interior-wise the new Delmonico‘s lacks the authenticity of the former restaurant-even if the latter already went with rectangular dining tables. According to your footage the lighting and seat positioning just feels odd to me.
Thanks for this and all your other videos! I really enjoy your video style and how you mix your other interests, mainly running and reading, into the videos. I would like to see more vlogs and neighborhood explorations, as I really enjoyed your documentations of your days in Tribeca and Chicago. I would also be interested in a video where you rank all the restaurants in NYC you have visited compartmentalized in the different cuisines.
Sincere thanks and best regards from Germany!
Thank you so much for watching! I really appreciate it! Yeah, I wish that I had the opportunity to visit Delmonico's before it was closed for so long so that I could do a more direction comparison of the restaurant and its evolution.
I definitely will add more vlogs with location and neighborhood explorations in the future. I feel like for some foods and restaurants I could give them a good ranking, but others, I just don't feel like I've had enough yet to make a fair judgement, but with more culinary experience I might be able to have a ranking video in the future.
I enjoyed this review very much! You have a kind and gentlemanly presence.
Thank you! I really appreciate it!

James, this all looks so amazing! Oddly, I've never been, but now they re-opened I have to! I haven't worked a September 11th since 2001, and usually try to treat myself on that day. I just may be at Delmonico's next week.

so happy to have delomincos opened again. been checking for three years. happy day
Me too! Their opening is great for New York!
Thank you for taking us with you! I didn’t know that they had finally reopened. Incredible food but yes…you have to take that wallet.
Thanks for watching! Yeah, I believe they'll have an official opening with a ribbon-cutting soon, they kind of came back under the radar. Indeed! I think that was the most I've ever spent at a steakhouse and I didn't even get drinks. It's expensive.
Honestly, its not that bad compared to some of the other restaurants I’ve visited in Manhattan. I dropped- you know what, nevermind, lol.😂
You can always add salt....most people's pallat are used to too much salt anyways
Indeed!
That looked really good James…this place will definatly be on my list if ever make it that way…good job buddy

That Delmonico steak had my mouth watering. It’s one of my favorite steaks. So glad the restaurant opened again and also that it kept its old fashion charm. Very classic and appropriate for this type of restaurant. I agree the hash browns did not look that appetizing as it was a big blob of potatoes. I think I would prefer Cracker Barrel’s hash brown casserole over that one. Ha ha. Thanks for the video as I enjoyed it!
Haha! Thanks for watching! Yeah, those hash browns weren't the best, but the steak was amazing!
That meal looked delicious! I just wondered why you didn't ask your server for salt as you felt the two dishes could use more. Great review!!
Thank you! Yeah, that's what I should've done.

Thank you so much!
From an old cowboy in Oklahoma I'd like to compliment you on ordering your steak medium rare. Makes a rancher's heart proud lol. Great video my friend.
Thank you! Yeah, medium rare is the way to go!
Watching you eat the hashbrowns with a fork and spoon had the staff spinning in circles in their minds 😂 How Gosche!
Yeah, like I said, it wasn't the easiest dish to eat.
Gauche.
So… He could’ve been more adroit?
And licking the knife!!
You people are so rude, leave him alone
Way to shout out the staff, even the bus people!
The staff was great!
I hoped they comped you anyway after your nice review. Nice video. Happy that they opened again.
Nothing was comped, but it was worth it! I'm glad they're back too.
Fantastic video! Everything was top notch!
Thank you! I really appreciate it!
It's such a shame that even though I ate there numerous times (I worked nearby), I did not appreciate the culinary significance of this place. Looks like I will need a revisit soon!
Yeah, it's a special restaurant for sure. From what I gather, it definitely seems to have changed a bit from what it used to be as well.
I’ve eaten there several times in the distant past. Total rip-off, and not all that fantastic.
ICall me old fashioned- but dressing nicely might have enhanced your dining experience, and showed the historic building the respect it deserves.
I would have thought they’d have a strict dress code.
I agree. He looked so, so out of place. And, an experience diner would’ve not complained the expensive menu items ad nausea.
Give me a break, wearing a suit is the last thing I want to do when I'm eating. In fact I refuse to ever wear a suit to any occasion.
Oh honey…. You need a better fitting IRONED shirt….. but loved the video !
finally.....glad you got to this place.......I LOVE IT.....their fillet steaks.....AWESOME.........and such great sides....

James, your experience at Delmonico's was a wonderful sight for many of us. I need to add this famed place to my bucket list when I'm next in NYC. One small point, just for informational purposes though. When tasting any bread item it is customary, in finer establishments at least, to break off a small piece of the baked goods and butter that alone. Thereafter, continue nibbling by repeating the subdivision method. Being of the older generation, this is how we were taught to approach a bread course. You may elect which ever style you feel comfortable with, but I felt compelled to let you know about this approach. Cheers.
Thank you! That's a good tip! I'll remember that for next time.
I don't worry about such things and I'm in my 50s by this point. I'm not there to impress anyone I'm there to enjoy the food.
@@johniii8147 Indeed! If one is going to a restaurant like Delmonico's then you've got to enjoy yourself.
Please follow the rules of etiquette for the bread as suggested. It shows that you have the money, class, and style to eat at such a prestigious restaurant. We can all enjoy ourselves while being respectful to other dinner guests and the restaurant. Also, you want to make sure that you are not miseducating your viewers who might go to these high-level establishments in the future for business and social gatherings. If you go to these places, you have a responsibility to follow the social rules and mores for people who desire to go.
@@janetjones4874 Give it a rest. Good dining is NOT a rules based thing. Yes of course you need to be respectful and appreciative of good service. But nor do you have to act like you're dining with Queen Elizabeth either. The "proper" way to eat bread is the last thing on your mind.
An excellent video! Thanks for sharing!!!
Thank you and thanks for watching!
Wow 🎉. Great review thank you so much for even showing the menu. That’s very smart and they have wagyu. 😊
Thank you! Indeed, they have some pretty impressive menu items.
Wow, they finally opened up ! During it's down time I believe they filmed a Walking Dead episode inside the restaurant. Delmonico's is supposedly the first restaurant in New York to offer hamburgers. I am not entirely sure but I believe so. I may visit here in the near future. Great food vlog as always. Loved the look at that cheesecake, what a work of art.
Thank you! Yeah, I've seen their interior pop up in a few shows. I haven't heard that about the hamburgers, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was the case. It seems like the restaurant was the first at a lot of things. Indeed, that cheesecake was amazing!
I had a ribeye from my local store 2 weeks ago. $30. It was great. Then I got one from Walmart $20 and it was also great.
One can definitely make a great and affordable steak at home!
I promise you that your Walmart steak has nothing on a Delmonico’s steak.
@@Arienrhod Depends who is cooking it. Beef grades are universal throughout the United States. Most of the time the extra money you are paying for is the ambiance.
Excellent Video, James!
Many thanks!

Now I want a steak!!
Thank you! I hope that you get to enjoy a good steak soon!
Insanely good video and voice over. Why you're at 12k subs is beyond me. Should be in the millions! Also, I'd maybe spend that much for the experience once, just to say the say. Otherwise, if you cook, or are learning, you can produce the same quality. Or at least Strive to be close without having to spend $150
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! Yeah, if you get a good quality cut of beef and can cook it properly, one can definitely eat a great steak for much less. But it's nice every once in a while to have an experience like this.
I had a wonderful pallet and sense of smell before I caught Covid in 2020 . I could taste something made in a fine dining establishment and recreate it at home. If it was an especially ingredient heavy dish I have been known to save some to take home with me or if I couldn’t stop myself from eating it all get another packed to go. That way after my first try at cooking it I had a sample of it to comparison it to and could fine tune what I might be missing on my first try. I have been told that some of my hijacked versions were an improvement on the original. There is no greater praise than that.
Since I had Covid food doesn’t taste the same. I was one of those people that still tested positive 4 months later, and caught it 3 times. Covid tried hard to kill me. I can’t taste the small nuanced flavors like I used to. 😢 it was nice while it lasted. Been 3 years now and it appears this handicap is going to be permanent. ☹️
I loved your video and subscribed so I can eat vicariously through you. Tell me more.

Thanks for watching! Yeah, filming meals like this can be a little complicated, but with each video I think I get a bit more efficient with getting the footage while enjoying the food.
That salad looked excellent. That's probably all I could afford. Maybe a baked potato too, lol
Haha! Yeah, it's expensive, but it's worth saving up for.
A couple of times I heard myself saying "So put some salt on it!" Everyone's taste is different and too little is superior to too much. Great review.
Thank you! There were no salt or pepper shakers on any of the tables, but I should've at least asked for some.
Between you and me, that lack of shakers is a bit arrogant. Sometimes distinction lets folks forget about their raison d 'etre, pleasing the guest.@@Jamesnu
@jerrycorcoran1109 I know what you mean. That's why when a restaurant doesn't provide salt and pepper on the table, I expect the food to be perfectly seasoned. But at the same time, it also comes down to personal preference. While I felt that the steak could've used more salt, someone else might find it seasoned perfectly.

The ribeye portion consisted of 50% cap, explaining its exceptional tenderness. It's worth noting that typically, one wouldn't start with the cap first, but everyone has their own preferences. Delmonico's ribeye cut offers an impressive balance between the cap and eye, but the question remains: was the eye portion as juicy as the cap?
Indeed! To me, the entire steak seemed to maintain an even balance of juicyness all the way through.

That meal looked insane! Didn't realize the establishment had so much history; it's on my NYC bucket list for sure. I love your reviews and you really know the dining landscape of New York. My parents will be in town at the end of the month for a few days and I want to wow them with some really great meals. Do you have any suggestions for amazing lunch and dinner spots in the city? Not necessarily Michelin starred or too fancy, though those are welcome, just places that you've had a spectacular meal. Thanks!
Yeah, it was a very memorable dinner! If they're visiting NYC, some of the standard spots like Katz's for pastrami and John's of Bleecker Street for pizza are good options. Dame is a pretty interesting restaurant and I love Caffe Panna for their affogatos.
I want ketchup with my well done steak.

Looks good but Being a Texan, I enjoy a grilled Holla Pino pepper with my steak. So if they can’t accommodate then it’s a No Go for me 🤠
Fair enough. That's a great topping!
Totally agree with you regarding sauce. Steam should speak for itself. Really want to go to Delmonicos! I live in England, however I Love going to historic places in NYC. Pleased it's re-opened. Definitely visiting next time I'm there. I don't earn a lot, however always push the boat out for places like this........We are only here for a visit!
It's such an amazing place, but so expensive. I do think there are intriguing menu options that are worth getting that wouldn't make the meal as expensive as my experience, but it's also the kind of place that you just have to splurge a bit.
Fun review. It is on my bucket list
Thank you! I hope you get to dine there soon!
That menu is surprisingly affordable. I’ll have to go there next time I visit.
It's a great restaurant to try.
I always pause when a Chef talks about "New" and "Global flavors" on an uber-traditional menu! 😮
I know what you mean. It's about finding the right balance between paying respect to the tradition of the restaurant and keeping it up to date with the times.
Diversity! 😼
