    This is a really important tip for neat video and will dramatically increase the speed of it. I used to avoid using neat video even though the shot needed it because it would slow my computer down to an unbearable crawl. Here's what's happening. For some technical reasons I don't fully understand, Neat video works 100x better on an untouched, uncut, raw clip with no effects applied. You can't even make an in and out point because that slows it all down.
    What I do is when I find a shot in my timeline that needs noise reduction and instead of applying neat video right away, I make a quick in and out point on my timeline of just that clip and render a high quality pro-res version of just that clip . Make sure your clip is already color corrected/graded before you do this or it defeats the purpose. I know it sounds like a pain but nothing is worse than neat video working slowly. This method is really not that bad at all, the clips render quickly, and even with the extra steps it's significantly faster than straight up applying neat video to clips that have been cut and have effects applied.
    Next you need to import the clip you just rendered and place it on your timeline. I like to leave my original noisy video clip in the timeline, disable it, and then place the rendered pro res video on the layer above. Now you can apply neat video to it and be blown away at how much faster it works.
    Anybody who has experienced the dreadful neat video lag knows how painful it is, with this method your neat video clip can literally playback in real time without even pre-rendering. If you're confused just know that the main idea is that neat video works 100x faster on a video with no cuts whatsoever, no effects, no speed ramping, no nothing! So just render out a copy of the clip with effects, color, in and out point baked in so that when you bring it back into premiere, neat video interprets it as a raw untouched clip, because it is.

    Hey Matt!! Maybe a dumb question but I've watched a LOT of SLOG3 videos involving the A7s3 10-bit coloring...what I have seen is many people suggesting that overexposing by that much is no longer necessary. I feel like I know your response based on this video, but just curious your thoughts with a well balanced 0.0 or 0.3 meter outdoors. Thanks!

    • @whoismatt
      @whoismatt  2 роки тому

      Hey Mike! The choice is entirely up to you with how much you wanna overexpose but in all my testing and experience I've found that 1.7 to 2 stops over results in the least noise. Keep in mind that SLOG3 is pretty flexible which most likely contributes to people saying you don't have to overexpose as much.

    • @jakebcampbell
      @jakebcampbell 2 роки тому +2

      It’s always better to error on overexposing (as long as you’re not clipping). It doesn’t lose any quality if you have to darken the image in post. Also you want to apply neat video before the color grade - although might be better to disable it while color grading to speed up workflow.

    • @MiroAcronymity
      @MiroAcronymity 2 роки тому +1

      @@whoismatt in my specific use case where dark areas make up most of the video (testing flashlight beams), S-Log 3 has not yielded good results with the A7IV. At ISO 3200 it produces significantly more noise than other picture profiles (or no profile). The highlights are also much less bright than in the other picture profiles which is not a good thing when trying to show the light as realistically as possible. I realize that my use case is very niche though. I even went as far as comparing the footage with neat video and S-Log 3 had several times more noise. I am not sure if I am doing anything wrong, but for very low light footage, S-Log 3 might not be very suitable.

    • @Wolf_1775
      @Wolf_1775 2 роки тому

      I'm using an A7iv, and I just recently started using it. So far it's fantastic for most of what I do, and a fair step above when I had before.
      I do a lot of action shooting at firearms ranges, and lighting conditions can vary between bright daylight with clear skies to overcast nights when we do low light work. I don't think there is any good solution for scenarios where we're using night vision equipment other than adapting a night vision monocular, but it would be cool to be able to get clearer video when we have some ambient lighting.
      I'll try playing around with some settings, and see if I can work in some additional light when we want to take video, as well as play around with the picture profiles for the more extreme use cases.

    • @MiroAcronymity
      @MiroAcronymity 2 роки тому

      @@Wolf_1775 In low light, I had the best results noise wise with PP02, but the highlights were also much dimmer. I actually prefer shooting in no profile at the moment because it has a good balance of noise and brightness. S-Cinetone is worth a look, too, but I am not good at grading it yet.
      I forgot to mention that I push the highlights, white levels and shadows in post and crush the darkest areas. It adds a bit of noise in the highlights, but it is managable and allows me to use a lower ISO while filming. I am using the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 because it allows me to zoom in at a constant exposure. I imagine with a lens like the Sony 20mm F1.8 I would be able to film at a much lower ISO. Perhaps it is also worth a try for you.

    S-log3 did no work for me so far. I did not observe any improvement in color grading or dynamics, it needs higher ISO, and it is ALWAYS noisy (besides the sunny enviroment).
    I used "base" ISO 3200 in my a7m4.
    For now i will stay with no PP.

    Topaz Video Enhance AI has better noise reduction, and can upscale and increase FPS of video footage as well. I use it a lot with my A7iii to produce 50fps.

      I agree, but DaVinci Resolve Studio (paid) is just as good with a little more control for really impossible and difficult shots that need both lifting of shadows and NR.

    I don't understand why you keep saying overexposed is "properly" exposed? Proper according to who or what? Certainly not according to Sony, and certainly not according to any technically correct workflow. If you actually "properly" expose (middle grey at 41%) and properly transform to your delivery gamut/gamma (likely REC709 2.4) with a CST or ACES or a technical LUT instead of randomly twiddling curves by eye, you don't need to go through these gyrations.

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 Рік тому

      Sony "proper" exposure has been too dark for a decade+. If you can give it more light you'll avoid noise, even on a decent camera like the a7SIII. Agree on the three approaches to get from Log back to REC 709. The Leeming LUT technical LUT also involves a brighter exposure.

    • @Humcrush
      @Humcrush Рік тому

      @@rsmith02 Why just do it the way Sony engineers designed it to work and use proper CSTs with one click when you can dick around with time-consuming, difficult to monitor hacks from random internet goofs.

    I don't agree - 2 stops overexpose is no longer necessery with 10 bit Slog3 from a7sIII or Fx6 - especially if you use Phantom LUTS. just expose normally, drag and drop LUT and no noise. What's more this built in exposure meter in A7sIII is totally not accurate. And third: noone would use footage like the example in this video (plant on the left totally in dark, so there will always be noise).

    • @rsmith02
      @rsmith02 Рік тому

      Of course it will have noise and bit depth and noise has no connection. Ideally you'd increase lighting or open up the aperture to give the sensor more light.

    I completely am lost by this s-log 3. To shoot two stops over Is completely not intuitive, and frankly is ridiculous. like shooting a non-reflex motion film camera. What am I missing here. and the amount of fixing it in post is really concerning and again, non intuitive. For those using this camera, what other setting would you use...for this upcoming shoot, they want to shoot on this dumb camera. I just need to shoot clean video of an interview.
