very usefull tutorial. i was thinking about upgrading my i7-6700k because of this issue with the playback when editing 4k clips, but with this tips you make me save lot of money! thank you matt!
A more practical solution to the renaming process: Copy video files from M4ROOT>CLIPS to a folder in your SSD your editing from. Highlight all video clips, then right click the first video and rename to whatever you want. It will rename to whatever you chose, and include a consecutive numerical value to each clip. Example: “wedding (1)” “wedding (2)” ect ect. Then copy all videos files from the M4ROOT>SUB folder into your SSD in a separate folder and repeat the first process. And that’s it. The key here is that both clips+proxies are named the same thing. In davinci, including “Proxy” isn’t necessary in the renaming process. Hope that helps.
Amazing thanks! I knew about all of it apart from the auto rename and locating for all automatically, which was what was keeping me from this workflow. Most useful video I’ve watch in the last 12 months. Kudos
Dude.. when I say I rarely subscribe to anyone.. I mean it.. but good god you saved my existence by making this video. I was searching the internet since yesterday after my first film session with my fx3 trying to figure out a way to edit my footage on my PC. I have a Ryzen 5600x with a geoforce 3070 rtx and 32 gb of ram.. the whole thing, and couldnt handle a single 10 sec clip in premiere without bugging out. Keep in mind i shoot sports, mainly mma, and need/want every ounce of quality and area to color grade while keeping my footage CRISP. But you saved me from the hassle of "oh my god.. i now have to buy a new pc.. or downgrade in my record settings/file formats". SUBSCRIBED THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
About 7:50 ... most of us will encounter that our footage is divided in many separated sub-folders (mostly because of various days of shooting). So, we find our selves with lots of folders to attach proxies to, and this video for one-folder example is not enough... BUT... but... if you import a bunch of CLIP folders into a Bin and then select them all and then YES you use this video step-by-step: it will work. So, After clicking on Attach, if you select the main folder in the dialog window and then click twice over the Search button... Premiere will offer you the PROXY file automatically. So, you don't need to go to the SUB folder manually. Try it out, it will speed things up. All the best to all the editors out there and cheers to Matt for doing such a great job with a smoothly narration over this muddy issue.
Bro I was so confused about this when I saw another channel mention to use them, but not show how. This video taught me everything I needed. Now I can edit again without the headache of laggy clips in Premiere!!!
Great video thanks Matt! I'm shooting FX3 on the road and wanted to experiment with proxies in camera but wasn't sure where the files stored. Much appreciated! This is much better workflow than cooking proxies in Media Encoder which I've done for years. Thank you for all of your work love the channel - TJ
Matt, good info. However, premiere pro has gotten so easy to create Proxies in 2022 that creating them in post takes very little time at all ( and don’t have to worry about all the nuances of SD cards and 120fps issues). Keep up the great work! Always learning something new on your channel. 👍👍👍
Thank you so much. I just bought the a7iv and was pulling my hair when I started editing after a 3 day shoot. Thought my 32gb of ram and rtx 3080 would edit smooth, bit no. Proxies from now on. You are a lifesaver 🙏
Hey Matt! IDK if you noticed but when using the latest firmware update with sony that allows you to have a LUT on the monitor while filming, all proxy get automatically created with that same color space. Is there a way I can use the in camera LUT as preview while filming but keep having my proxy files generated with the log flat profile?
Great video. Which is faster - creating the proxies via Premiere Pro or going through the hassle of managing more files in the workflow, buying even more fast SD card (otherwise I'll run out mid season), attaching the proxies manually with the bulk rename tool etc etc ?
We do this out here in Kenya, side note with the monitors we have once you start recording the monitor will go blank when filming in proxy mode. So we use the monitor to grab focus then it turns off during recording......sad.
I know that the 8-bit cameras like a7iii lose face tracking and have other caveats when recording with proxies enabled. Do the higher end 10-bit cameras have any limitations with proxies enabled? Surprised not to see that mentioned in the video.
It's no longer an issue with the newer cameras. My Sony A7IV can do everything now while recording proxies. My 6400 is severely limited when they are enabled.
How would you go about sending proxies only to an editor and have them edit and color corrected then getting those files back and linking them to do the final full resolution export?
This is awesome! With Keyboard Maestro, I should be able to rename the files in the SUB folder automatically when the SD card connects ;) Thanks for the tip!
Wow good to know. Question. So, when I do color grading I can’t use proxy? Should i delete the proxy if im doing the video with color grading? Or i can use proxy after doing color grading? Please explain, thanks
thanks for this video... i was about to change my computer, and you opened up a world to me! Does the 128gb sd prograde v60 i saw in the video support 4k 4.2.2 10 bit 50 frame with proxies or should i buy a faster card?
Unfortunately, this doesn't work, if the audio channels of MXF file and proxy don't match up. At the FX6, my main recordings have 4 audio channels, but the proxy files only 2.
Thanks for the video Matt! One question: All my slowmo clips are left out in the SUBS folder, which makes the order of the videos completely messy. The attachments get mixed up. Is there a way to let the A7s iii seperately name the slowmo clips?
Thanx matt!! i gonna try that, and watch your editing guide as well. Could somebody tell me what is the application or software to rename lot of files on macintosh computers ?? Thanxxx!
Hey. So I tried this method for a while and I had frequent crashes with premiere, and I was going over all the changes I made in my workflow with Premiere experts for weeks until I told them about that and they said it's a known issue (WHY WOULD THIS TAKE WEEKS TO FIGURE OUT???) and I better export proxies from the software itself rather than use the camera's proxies. That, indeed, with combination with some few other minor changes, improved the work speed in premiere and I rarely have crashes since.
Hey Matt.. Very helpful video. One question..what will happened if we wanna send the project or XML to Davinci resolve.. what info will it carry ?? will it show us the original clips OR it will show us the proxies as well ?? thanks ET
Hmm... I didn't have to do all that.. I have the a7iv.. and I did proxies in camera and the only thing I changed was when I do attach proxy.. on the watch file properties.. I use media start then boom..
Thank you EmSolid, this sounds llike a very good way to proceed, I will try next time ! Sometimes we use PP quickly, without reading carefully what options are available... ;-)
Proxy files saved me back when I switched from HD to 4K and will help me again now that I shoot in 10 Bit. I wish Sony would allow us to change the file name format for the proxy files. Or Premiere would finally learn other proxy naming schemes. The one from Sony never changed. That would save so much time.
Hey Matt - good stuff - thank you! My Sony FX6 native clips are mxf files. Sony FX6 made mp4 proxies in camera. The mp4 proxies do not seem to attach to mxf files in premiere pro. I renamed proxies as instructed. Also shot with fx3 that made mp4 native files - and the proxies attached to those fine. Suggestions?
I'm having the same issue with my brand new FX6 v.3. Followed all the steps in the video but an error message appears "Proxy media and full resolution media must have matching audio channels"? I've tried everything, including modifying the audio channels to just 2 but nothing works? what a shame in camera proxy's don't work, would have saved me huge amounts of time. Would love some help on this?
I always thought that fluidity of playback and skimming was codec related. Meaning that cameras recording in codec that aren't editing friendly won't play smoothly, even if they're light. I didn't test it, but my guess is that Prores proxy (for example), would be smoother than a small resolution/bitrate XAVC file.
Hey Matt, I have a question for you. I'm working with proxies and I don't have the original file, only the proxies are given to me. The proxies I'm using were created directly from my boss's Sony Camera. When I have the project file, I simply attach the provided proxies. Once attached, the 2160 x 3840 proxies are compressed, but the 3840 x 2160 ones are fine. What could be wrong with the 2160 x 3840 proxies and why are they compressed in Premiere Pro, but they're fine when opened in VLC player?
Great tip! But how do you interpret the 60p proxies to play back in 23.976 to match the 4k clip that was shot 60p and interpreted to 23.976 via Premiere?
Very helpful and informative video Matt. I just had one question. I followed all of the steps in your video. I for some reason am running into an issue when I get to the part where I go to link the actual clips to the proxies. I get a message that says "Proxy media and full resolution media must have matching audio channels." To add to this, I have 4 channels of audio when I am shooting in regular 1080 XAVC S HD with my sonya7siii. These have the 4 channels when I import them to premiere. For some reason the Proxy files that I create in camera only have 2 channels when I put them into Premiere. Is this an issue you have ever run into, or you may have a solution for? Thanks in advance and love you videos by the way.
you are very very good at explaining things, but i did not understand the video you made 2 or 3 years ago about making proxy's in premiere pro and the thing that has confused me the most was the interpret as with frame rates, i shoot everything in 30 fps and i tried to follow your video to make 30 fps proxy's but i had a mismatch between video and video the frame timing did not align the footage would show time code 1 second, and if you turn the proxy on (while paused) then the proxy would show video from 1.005 (like a few frames forward) so at the time i had to finish my edit so i kind of gave up on the proxy's but i would love it if you would make a new video about proxy's and give a real in depth dive into that older video and like break it down and explain each step and what it does and kind of how it works, i am attempting to speed up my edits and proxy's would help sense i started recording in 4k but rendering to HD (using my phone, so if i need to zoom in) also can you make a video about how to edit on one computer save to a network drive (or remote computer) and have adobe encoder do auto rendering on a different computer and or a network drive? this way i'll be able to edit on one system and an other system (that is running virtually on my server) can render without me starting it, and i can just continue to edit while it is rendering, this would help me a lot... :-)
I never experienced an issue when just copying the proxies into a folder within the project named "proxies" then just linking the footage to the proxies (in premiere pro) and it automatically recognize all the other files... no renaming required... There is a trade off while doing this on older cameras like the Sony A6400, when you turn proxies on you lose Face tracking on 4k footages.

Use "media Start" in the proxy attach process instead of file name. then you can even skip the bulk renaming step

You are a scholar and a saint 🙏 BTW (reading the below comments,) are we not able to use this method with 60p?
Awesome video! Can we get a tutorial on how to do it in DaVinci Resolve?
What are the pros and cons to generating proxies in DaVinci Resolve from native footage VS creating proxies in-camera while recording?
Great tip! But how do you interpret the 60p proxies to play back in 23.976 to match the 4k clip that was shot 60p and interpreted to 23.976 via Premiere?
Attach the proxies then select all the clips > Speed > 40%
