Sharing some thoughts on the Winchester 1885 Trapper single shot lever action rifle in .45-70. It's a little expensive but it really is a lot of fun. Had fun doing this rifle review. If you are considering getting a rifle like this and you like lever actions, this is probably worth the money. One of the downsides of this caliber that I forgot to mention is the price and the general lack of availability of the ammo, especially in that last year or so. It's a spendy rifle to shoot.

Its not a "one shot, trap door", it is a "falling block" rifle.

I'd wager you could unload/reload it while staying on target, ie with the gun still up and make it work. You might need to wear some eye protection, but still a speed reload attempt would be pretty cool bro. Good stuff!!

12” high at 30 yards. Dead on at 150 yards.

Ok I’ll give it a try. I haven’t been able to find any info about this sight at all. I’d love to be able to hunt with it. Thanks for the info.

So are you saying at 150 yards, the lowest/ flattest aim will be dead on?

Couldn't swing the cash for a nice high wall presently, settled on a nice rolling block carbine. Have to agree that a sweet handling powerful single shot is kind of a fun thing. Has become a hiking companion to me here in Alaska, must be my age or something ....slowing down. I really enjoy the interaction of the loading.

I have numbers 43 & 44 in .45-70 from that limited production. Unfortunately, I've not had the chance to fire them yet.

That is about as low as a sight can go and still see over the block/Receiver. You need a taller front sight.

Indeed. I grinded a custom solution and it’s crackin accurate now. Added ~2 mm to the front post.

Not a trap door system. Falling block system.

Trapper is slang for short rifle used by Fur trappers.

Bought a pristine full set for $1750. I love it.

Off hand shooting does minimize the felt recoil, but come on, a 45-70 with a 405 grain bullet, you better be wearing a thick heavy jacket like this guy.

Last time I heard that much whining we were late feeding our dog. At least she whined in sync with her mouth. Fine little rifle. Got one. Anything intended to shoot at targets up to 150 or so yards will shoot high at shorter distances. That's where knowing how to shoot comes in handy.
