  • LEGO is, in many ways, the biggest education company on the planet - an influential form of learning about the world around us, whether you're a kid, or an NBA star like Victor Wembanyama, or the Emmy-winning comedian Wyatt Cenac, who spent months researching how the famously yellow faces on millions of mini-figures… became so racially confounding. Pablo and Wyatt unbox a gigantic foosball table and explore a plastic world where the Civil War and January 6 never end.

      the way wyatt was sitting on that, and sitting on the segregation of the "lego world" with the "licensed world" was a masterstroke of story telling.
      sometimes burying the lede is a powerful tool for storytelling, this episode was definitely a journey

    I ain't gonna lie, in the first segment or so, I kinda felt like "really guys? We're going after LEGO for racism? They're ALL yellow!" (And trust me, this is coming from a guy who can find the sliver lining of racism/prejudice/privilege in just about EVERY cloud). But I'm coming from a place of not having played with a Lego in over 40 years. I should've known better. I should've known that Pablo, and the great Wyatt Cenac, would come with the receipts. Fantastic episode. People may still see it as an insignificant thing, but it's not. It's the so-called "little things" like this that help create the unconscious biases in CHILDREN, our most impressionable demographic, that shape them with biases, conscious and unconscious, that they may very well carry for the rest of their lives, and can easily grow into more insidious and harmful things.

    45:55 Loved this entire offering, but especially appreciated the nonchalant Larry O'Brien cameo and everyone being seemingly unfazed by it because... LEGO.

    First the Ross Perot one, and now this one. It seems like everytime I tune in Pablo is doing something that seems silly and meaningless at first, but then he gets super deep and it starts becoming fascinating and real.

    They started doing flesh toned colors when they started doing more licensed themes like Star Wars, Harry Potter. Most of their basic lines still use yellow but I prefer the flesh tones

    🤦🏾‍♂️ 😬🤣at 31:11 I get the feeling the American heritage book that dude grew up with calls the civil war “the war of northern aggression” ended with the south will rise again.

    p.s. Next time I've got a question or two, I hope I'll be courageous enough to call and leave a message in English !

    This conflict is inherent to all homogeneous societies! The greatest threat the US poses to other countries is not Hollywood or Coke/McDonalds, its our pluralistic society (and what the US right hates the most) ! In the US we should consume the popular culture of such monocultures with due caution, IMHO. I would not assume that great insight into race relations are common in Denmark, nor diverse sex roles in Japan, for example. Blending is all of ours's future, and this freaks MANY out.

    I'm only 24 minutes in but if this an entire podcast were two adults cry about white and brown Legos. The two of you just might be the softest people ever. And I've watched every episode.

    • @keyboard-commentator
      @keyboard-commentator Місяць тому +18

      you're missing the point. they aren't "crying", they're having a conversation about the intersection of lego and race, and all the interesting ways people use legos to tell a story. they aren't trashing lego, or trashing lego hobbyists. this is what journalists do, the find interesting stories, and show them to the public. if you don't like the show, then just turn it off.
      the funniest part about your comment though, is it seems you're the only one crying here. i can't fathom why you'd be upset with people discussing racial topics. is that a soft spot for you or something?

      Cory is an idiot and doesn’t understand what this topic is really about. Critical thinking is a good thing…try it sometimes.
