The 'Alpha' Myth, Debunked | PTFO

- From LeBron to Deion and and Joe Rogan to Andrew Tate, one pervasive term has come to encapsulate a human desire for domination. Correspondent Bradley Campbell heads into the wild - with aerial wolf-hunting, bespoke bear-drugging, and more - to discover that the science behind the "alpha" … is based on a mistake. The new truth, however, may teach even and especially the most gentle among us how to become better leaders.

The alpha myth has taken on such a life of its own that I'm not sure it can be debunked. I share the story every chance I but idk
Technically alphas do exist, but they don't look like what popular western media would have you believe.
its been coopted by sad little men around the world, and sad little men wield a surprising amount of social power on the internet
Because they haven't reached the zenith. Omega fanfic
I have more thoughts, but I would really like to see Bradley more often, doing more investigative journalism.
The book drop into the intro was so FIRE.... my god. Give the production team all the awards
Things I found out . Wolves are just a big family . That care for one another and even hug, which blew my mind . And Alpha male in wolves was wrong ! Great story yall definitely gonna be following Brads podcasts!
Thank you, Pablo. I have talked about this story for some time but have never had this level of detail.
I'm waiting for the Vivek post-game smackdown.
THE WOOOOF! god bless cortes, give this man a show
This story is incredible.
“The woof?” God damn I am dying
By any chance anybody know the name of the paper he mentions at 41:32 about wolves hugging? Thanks
From what I can find, there is a paper that was published in 2001 titled, “Standing over and hugging in wolves,” written by L. David Mech.
I’m unable to find a place to read it, but parts of it are cited in several of his earlier works.
The wolf says "Woof"!
Put those hugging wolves on a shirt.
I like to imagine Dan Soder being on every episode 🥰
Remember, Science is hard and (most) sports is dumb. PS when any science makes it into a book, its badly out of date, by at least a couple years.
Absolutely incredible story.
Sorry, maybe this comes up later in the episode. Please read “of wolves and men” Barry Lopez
So nobody gonna mention Pablo pulling out anything but the refreshing taste that is Miller Lite?
This is awesome and really appreciate you took the time to look at this. I'm so glad that the true alpha archetype is maybe Aragorn from Lord of the Rings.
So basically, what David Mech observed with wolves in captivity was wolf society under prison rules.
Does Cortez remind anyone else Hamilton from sandlot?
Absolutely fascinating about the dictatorial alphas. I loved this
Why is this wolf thing so important. I don't think alpha has anything to do with humans but chimps definitely have a dominance hierarchy and I'd say we're a bit more closely related to chimps so what's the point of debunking the wolf thing?
I wrote this before the last segment
Where my dogs at? Woof? 😂
I learned something.
Joe Rogan owns that company. Which he NEVER tells you.
Should’ve guessed
I’ve known this for years now, but the misinformation is still being taught in schools, in media, everywhere. I think that means it qualifies as propaganda at this point. Always a good idea to examine any “research” that tries to anthropomorphize animal behavior, animals very rarely have the same behavioral motivations as humans.
Why is this censored?
Because it runs on over the top streaming with brand name advertisers
All the main show Miller Lite sponsorship going to not like the bud light
96 calories (beep) available for delivery
Hi Pablo!
Wolves are a family of killers, everyone has a role... if only the Lakers could figure out how to be that
🐺
First comment alpha 😅
Alphabet?
idk if jj at the end was on purpose or not, but it's absolutely on points
full JJ ep is here: ua-cam.com/video/5m4OQBOhfOM/v-deo.html
Ending is cut off
was just an excerpt. full JJ episode is here: ua-cam.com/video/5m4OQBOhfOM/v-deo.html
The "L" in the author's name stands for Lucyan
😂Cortes says Wolf like all bilingual Latinos say it😂
Interesting re: wolves... but machismo has been around for all of recorded history. We HAVE definitely entered an era though that glorifies pure physical dominance without the nobility and valor that accompanied heroic physicality in the past.
Tune into PTFO next week when Pablo discovers new research that proves that goats are not, in fact, the greatest mammal of all time.
Hilarious
This show needs more interludes. It doesn't have enough. And they should be even longer as well, 20 seconds to read the name of the show that I already know because I clicked on the video isn't enough.
I did get the same understanding around the primates becoming alpha. The are tyrannical and dictatorial but the eventually they get over run. Alphas understand they will not be dominant for a life. For the brief time they have that feeling of power is what is most important.
I like Bradley the Hay Bucker!
Pablo is married to a woman?
The alpha metaphor is the wolf in the ecosystem as apex predator not the wolf against other wolves in the pack... this isnt that hard if your intellectually honest
Betas do tend to deny that alphas exist
Idiots with calcified brains do tend to deny that information they liked was wrong.
With all due respect, I feel like this was poorly discussed and analyzed. The idea that an alpha rises to power based on dominance ALONE might be a misconception, but an alpha isnt a myth at all- and the desire to be one and the desire for them as leaders is absolutely warranted. This was all semantics. It has to do with CAPABILITY. A strong leader isnt JUST "andrew tate" like, but has the ABILITY to be -when necessary. He isnt JUST a caring friend, but has the ABILITY to do so when necessary. So the ALPHA, is the wolf that is CAPABLE of embodying ALL the characteristics needed in a leader- DOMINANCE INCLUDED. Every Alpha might not have had to BATTLE his way to the top, but he surely must be ABLE TO- AND LIKELY HAS. Its not necessary to CONSTANTLY be the bravado dictator type you bring up, and as you stated- results in reckless death, but it is absolutely necessary TO BE CAPABLE of it. If youve never looked into a mans eyes and intuitively known that in a moment of pressure that he will sweat and cower, then you are that guy lmao i think the misconcpetion is that this position is determined by violence- its not, fine- but its absolutely still something that is decided. It's just not always done via violence. It's moreso done by the natural understanding of intangibles and whatever that thing is we call intuition. There is a shared knowledge of the capabilities of each other in a team environmwnt. To strive to be a balanced indiviudal CAPABLE of managing ALL thoae characteristics is what these athletes and so forth are speaking of. And its entirely accurate. A good leader absolutely needs to DOMINATE in moments and ENABLE the REST (WHO OTHERWISE WOULD NOT) to do so as well. They might be "parents" but it is not a coincidence that they have become parents in the first place. They wouldve had to survive, likely won battles, etc. A non-alpha male, which clearly exist, is not going to be a parent that leads a pack. The constant talk in the zeitgeist is about being the one that leads the pack. Because it is the one that is prpperly and effectively balancing ALL the capabilities and emotions. You absolutely SHOULD steive to be that, dont you think? you might not be able but it in no way is it not something to strive for. This was poor semantics. Respectfully. There is no myth of the Alpha. Hierarchies are everywhere and thwre is clear reason. The understanding of how an alpha comes about might have been a misconception for some, but their existence and status is absolutely not.
"Alpha wolves dont exist, but alpha males do...." Take 5 minutes to read that and digest it. Ridiculous lol
i ain't reading all that. i'm happy for you tho. or sorry that happened
@@cgmckelvey short version: "alpha" is absolutely a real archetype and their takeaway from their research is poor.
Go write your ABO fanfic
@@cw2962no you should! apparently you enjoy fiction and detest correcting error 🤣
You realize that wolf packs sometimes have female alphas right?
was excited for the show then heard Israel and turned it off
And you felt the need to inform us?
