I have to correct myself. The two versions can't be fairly compared, because Stevie's version is pure instrumental perfection, while Jimi's version is classic rock song. Though the Jimi's one has some kind of mystic in it, can't really explain it, it's just the way I feel it... I just listened to Stevie's version and I was blown away once again. It's just pure guitar masterpiece by genial virtuoso!
What are you talking about? They were in perfect concert, albeit some conflict in the sonic output, i.e. mixing was a little off. Also what is this presumption that Jeon was trying to "show off"? The whole thing was melody based and very purposeful. And the purpose clearly wasn't "showing off".
I'm sure Guthrie LOVED this! He loves playing WITH musicians on stage, no overplaying, no showing of, just making the best music possible while talking through instruments on stage. What a great performance! Really touched my heart.
What impresses me with Guthrie is the way he just gives the other guitarist space to shred. It shows such musical maturity and when you are that good - you don't really have to try.
I love how Guthrie doesn't try to hog the stage. He knows that these guys on stage with him idolize him, and he still gives them their spotlight. He is such a class act. That is another big reason why he is the best.
Well, at his clinic in Bangalore last year, Lord Guthrie did mention that there are some tunes one must never shred over. He mentioned Little Wing by name, as one of those. However, for the guitar player who's playing with Him here, this guy is sharing the stage with Lord GG, probably the greatest guitar player of the modern era, so to be fair to him, he maybe wanted to showcase his musicianship within the time allocated. So I get his point of view as well.
I love it how Guthrie can blow your brains with both over-lightspeed shredding and his amazing slow playing... Simply the most amazing guitarrist alive.
If you'd ever want to be a guitarist it's Guthrie.. Great humbleness in his utter genius and wisdom. I think i speak for all guitarists and say.. We salute u sir.
I love how when guthrie is playing with another guitarist, he usually plays the complete opposite of whatever shredding nonsense they're trying to pull off and plays something melodic and beautiful. Doesn't try and be a a showoff or prove he's better.
Well, he actually did destroy him, by pulling a magnificent sensitive and smart soloing while the other guy showed little more than advanced technique. Also, Guthrie acknowledges the Korean guy with his glance all the time in evidence of his true humbleess. Big guy.
Let's be fair, that Korean guitarist played a pretty good solo, and it didn't sound like shredding nonsense to me. Guthrie also likes to play fast notes in his solos, nothing wrong with that. Music doesn't have to be a competition. You guys sound like you're circlejerking over Guthrie just for the sake of it. They both played well and showed mutual respect, and that's what music is about.
@@KiDDx61495 man guthries fans are probably the most cocksucking guys i have ever seen in fanbase.they donot just appreciate guthrie but discredit other musicians.they enjoy ridiculing other musicians playing more than appreciating Guthrie's.
taking two very competent guitarists to interpret what one BRILLIANT guitarist and musician rocked all by himself. Great video, but rock on forever Jimi - may you rest in peace always :)
@TheSpoonman00 That's Jeon In-Hyuk's personal custom Suhr guitar. It's the 24-fret Modern model. Guthrie's first Signature Model (the bolt-on with the Flame Top in Light Bengal Burst finish) is sitting on a stand behind Guthrie. Guthrie is playing his second Signature model in this vid, which is a plain Mahogany set-neck model in satin finish.
The Korean guy's tone and playing contrasts Guthrie, yes, because he is not the same person. Regardless, why would having a similar tone make any sense in a live environment? How many gigs have you been to where the combined 2 guitarists and bassist end up sounding like fucking mush, ask yourself that. Notice at 7:00 how well they can independently be heard, without one taking precedence? Huh, I wonder why the fuck that is? And just because they planned the form, texturally, around big dynamic shifts doesn't mean the Korean guy tried to "outshred" Guthrie or play it up, he's obviously got some radical chops, certainly better than everyone here, and his playing is not pentatonic wankery or mindless speedshred either, it's as harmonically diverse as he can make it for a chord structure like this. Contrast, texture, call and response, dynamics, look them up, educate yourselves, and for fuck sake, stop thinking like guitarists (and children) and start thinking like musicians.
Music is an amazing languaje. they may be unable to understand one to each other by the talking, but with music they can express feelings animic state and so on, this is amazing.
for sure, but go watch any of the G3 jams, or anybody with guthrie, its like, they know they cant beat his soulful melodies, so they take the low road and try and out do him with shred technique, ending up making themselves look immature...serious backfire, everytime.
Guthrie wasn’t reluctantly agreeing, he was inferring the sound the other guy ventured towards and contrasted perfectly. Hendrix himself went from ballads to literally burning guitars on stage. No hints, just balance.
I totally agree. Why do so many guitar player feel the need to play fast over such a beautiful piece. Gutherie is the man. While that kid was playing every lick he new, Gutherie just smiled and brought it back to earth when he played. Gutherie you rule brother, you ALWAYS play the right thing!
Guthrie is always so nice and supportive to other players. That's incredible. The other guy is just shredding like stupid, and Guthrie looks at him so friendly...
Use names, not “Asian guy”. I can see how people think than Jeon In Hyuk was playing out too much, but that’s exactly what Hendrix did. Guthrie set the perfect contrast for someone to let loose. He knew it. Hendrix let loose himself and people followed. You can argue but Jimi literally played a guitar behind his head, and then with his teeth. and then lit it on fire. Proving you can give birth to sound before killing it and still make it beautiful.
Notice how G.G. shifts gears to accommodate the other guys "bumping" as you say. He starts playing in a Wes Montgomery style, musically stating that this is an exhibition, not a competition. Highly evolved.
Man that's what I love about Guthrie... despite being the greatest guitarist in the world he always knows how to pull back and let other players have the spotlight. Even if he's miles better than them. The korean guy is excellent btw.
it was great, guthrie is fantastic as always, great chops for the rest as well, but sorry guys, no one will ever make a better cover version of this song than S.R.V.
I'm Korean, but these Korean musicians Guthrie plays with all make us seem like such egotistical musicians. The guitarist here didn't seem to understand the feel that Guthrie was going for and just went at it. I saw this bassist here in Guthrie's Smoke on the Water video, and it seemed like he just went and took a solo when he wasn't even supposed to, not to mention he tried to show off all his slapping technique at once. And the other Korean guitarist Guthrie plays with in other videos does a similar thing. It seems like Guthrie just watches in exasperation at times.
Huh. I didn't really get that impression. I thought the first guitarist played very well, and Guthrie decided to play in a more quiet manner to contrast the already great, but louder solo that just happened. An amazing performance from all the parties involved, I think.
Julian Stockton Fair enough. I would still perhaps say that the Korean guitarist was reaching a bit in some places. But yes, overall, it is a great performance.
I got the same impression tbh. And I was born in Korea as well. Idk, I was never into Korean guitarists (at least when I was back home, I wasn't enthusiastic enough to research other players and get inspired and stuff) so I can't comment with absolute confidence but I've been listening to Guthrie for a while and I know his playing. From my viewpoint, Ellis nailed my first impression on this performance...
No its the suhr electronics. Idk i noticed even in his clean tone his guitar automatically phases. Also i saw a rig breakdown vid that his pickups automatically phases. Or flangs.
Yea Guthrie is 5' 11" or so i met him at the Namm and talked to him for about 15 or 20 mins and im 5' 11" and i never felt like i was looking down on him he is just very thin. But other than that, which doesn't even matter he is musically brilliant on the guitar technically gifted One of the best in the World in Rock Fusion
Absolutely. This video, in my opinion, is what might cause a Guthrie Govan skeptic to realise that he's very much capable of producing great feel in his solos. Can't say the same for the other man though.
@alexkhan2000 Ahh, I see it there. I'm actually quite honored you cleared up that confusion for me. Both are incredibly good players in their own right, and the guitars only make it infinity times better. Go Suhr! :D
all these criticisms in the comment about the korean guitarist yet you all are observers and not the people playing on the stage, do you know how nervous anyone would be to play on stage with Guthrie? I think the korean guitarist did an excellent job even though he had some slip ups here and there. And the way Guthrie plays with other musicians, especially jams with other guitarists is that he always gives them space and trys to complement as much what they are doing. Not everyone can be at the same technical or melodic prowess as Guthrie is, please stop making it some kind of competition and just simply see that these guys are all having fun and not at all trying to compete against each other. Any musician is able to see that in the video.
Wow! That Korean dude is really good! Guthrie is always tasty and his solos perfectly fit the song. As much as I love Steve Vai, he would probably just noodle all over the neck and not capture the melody or essence of the song structure like these 2 did. Nice job guys!!
Watching Guthrie allow the Korean player to show off with out retaliating and shredding him into oblivion shows a lot of class on his part.
Guthrie doesn´t need to show off or shred his ass to demonstrate his abilities, I think that`s what is special about him
agreed. that asians guitar isnt in tune. and soloed to long
IMHO the Jimi's version is the best by far. The SVR's one is the second, though...
I have to correct myself. The two versions can't be fairly compared, because Stevie's version is pure instrumental perfection, while Jimi's version is classic rock song. exactly
I like how Guthrie is trying to harmonize the melody with the other guy. Very humble from a guitar god like him.
The other guy was no slouch.
Same tought,Guhtrie can shred him to heaven and it was nice from him to "downgrade" his playing. But both great performance, together!
I like how the other guy gets referred to as "the other guy".
Guthrie: "Okay, you done?" No? Okay...(another round) You done now? My turn? No? Okay....."
Lol! You are all over the internet
I love how Guthrie doesn't try to hog the stage. He knows that these guys on stage with him idolize him, and he still gives them their spotlight. He is such a class act. That is another big reason why he is the best.
Man, the Korean guitar player is certainly no pushover. He can hold his own next to Guthrie Govan of all people. Props to him and the band. 🤩
fantastic. the korean, jeon in hyuk, was actually brilliant! It's always a joy to watch stuff like this

What a relief it was, when the soloing finally ended.
Ladies and gentleman, the classiest man alive. Mr. Guthrie Govan.
So beautifully done. I love the restraint and soft playing they used. Bravo!

Agreed, but "A lot" is two words. A bit, a ton, a little, a lot.

When Mr. Hyuk takes his first solo he looks so proud to be playing with guthrie.. I know I would be proud to jam with him!
this become one of my fav compositions, this two guys are incredible!
Guthrie's guitar sings for him, and what a voice!!!

its because he can choose when to destroy them if he wishes too . But he is to humble to even do that
Well, he actually did destroy him, by pulling a magnificent sensitive and smart soloing while the other guy showed little more than advanced technique. Also, Guthrie acknowledges the Korean guy with his glance all the time in evidence of his true humbleess. Big guy.

Is it just a coincidence that Guthrie Govan and Guitar God have the same initial letters, or did his parents know what was to come...

Guitar god not "Guitar God" :)
i just turned into one giant goosebump from all the chills.
I for one, think that Jeon In Hyuk did a damn fine solo.
yeah, and i bet these people calling him trash are bunch of fangays who doenst know the pressure playing onstage with gg, he did well
I'M SO HAPPY WATCHING THIS
2:52 that lick sounded like something Guthrie would play, and then they looked at each other.
taking two very competent guitarists to interpret what one BRILLIANT guitarist and musician rocked all by himself. Great video, but rock on forever Jimi - may you rest in peace always :)

Guthrie, not only a great player.. a humble person as well.. he acknowledges other peoples style of playing.
Amazing jam!!’
@machtin9 Yes, it's not Guthrie's signature. Guthrie's one has Pau ferro (pau, not pao, means iron wood) and that's maple. There's not killer swicth.
whts the name of the track that plays at the very last of the video?
Guthrie is always so nice and supportive to other players. That's incredible. The other guy is just shredding like stupid, and Guthrie looks at him so friendly...
that guitarist playing beside guthrie is a GREAT! player,.....AND THEN GUTHRIE PLAYS AND YOUR LIKE OMG!!!!!!
