he forgot himself
Zac Python Definitely.
No, he is just showing that he can play anyone's style
I wouldn’t watch a concert but i would like to see is number in a cirkus
Absolutely
I agree
Absolutely nailed Knopfler.
Not just Knopfler. He basically nailed all of them, except for maybe Hendrix and King, and just because of lack of rhythm playing and off tone. Govan is just... i can even... this guy is... someone else please just finish the sentence. I clearly can't.
Bryan Fabian ya it was epic.
I think he played that Sultans lick even more nicely than MK did himself, tbh.
ikr...such juicy fingerpicking ... brilliantly performed by Guthrie
Disagree, it sounds like a virtuoso imitating Knopfler, which is what it is. Does not get the microdynamics and the unique post-bend vibrato. I'm sure he could if that were the focus, but any DS fan can tell that's not Knopfler.
Just to clarify... This was a job Guthrie did for a guitar magazine. The magazine had a poll for the public to vote on the best guitarist in 20 different categories. They then asked Guthrie if he could make a piece of music that had a little bit of playing based on the style of the winner from each category. If you look in the description of the video you can see the category and the winner.
Just thought I'd mention that to answer the questions like "Where's guitarist x" etc...
+Danny James Hey man love your channel!
Charlie Barber Thanks man! That's awesome :)
+Mox_au Haha what do you really think about Townsend!!! LMFAO!
+Mox_au They study Townsend's writing at Berklee. Where do they study yours?
+Mox_au What legendary albums and music have you written?
That Gilbert run melted my face off.
That first part was spot on, towards the end a bit too much legato for Gilbert's style. Still very impressive, of course!
It's amazing how Guthrie can capture the essence of all these famous players yet retain so much of his own style and musicality. An incredible performance!!!
Guthrie's like "just in case you don't know how good I am, I'm going to outplay all of your favorite guitarists' in their own styles."
+DistortedV12 "outplay" lmfao yeah without a doubt. Call me when he can write any guitar parts that are even remotely as good as these ones that he merely covered, incorrectly at that... oh wait.
+Orange Fender are you Kidding? He was playing in the styles of the artists, not trying to play note for note. The guy is just amazing.
I'm not saying the dudes not amazing because he is. But to say he out plays Jimmy Hendrix and mark knopfler is a bit absurd considering he's merely covering these licks.
+Orange Fender He outplays them. Is he more influential? hell no, I knew all those guys way before I heard about Guthrie, yet he can play circles around any guitarist I've heard of, from this list or anywhere else and also remain musical while doing it. Will he ever appear as important as the guys on the list? probably not. Does he deserve it? yes. He has an understanding deep enough of music to be able to identify what makes every guitarist's style and apply it to his own playing, but I still know it's him. Doing that is far harder than it seems.
Do you honestly believe that any of the guitarists on this list who have been playing for longer than this guy has even existed are incapable of doing the same thing? He does not out play them. He down plays them if anything, covering a persons guitar work that they invented will never be "outplaying them" especially since if not for them he wouldn't be playing anything your argument is invalid. This guys technically skilled but has no soul. Sorry.
I don't agree with the Malmsteen part.... Ynwie would continue playing until the end or until somebody cut his wire, hehehe.
Lol lmao 😂
Lol, someone unplug yngwie, he's killing the jam
Guthrie can play anything. Period.
GuitarPanda but the thing is about mastery. In guitar it is not necessary that if u can play everythin or not, the thing that matters is if u have mastered a thing to the fullest or not and can apply to amaze people and then become a virtuoso with it. Hence considering all this i feel that Guthrie is more of a teacher rather than a virtuoso.
Guthrie is a virtuoso, he's almost perfect at everything, i don't know many other guitarists that achieved even that, they just focused on fewer techniques
Simon Gavriilidis thats the point, u have to focus on one thing, others like slash and satriani are way more popular than him and rich too. Guys he is more of the teacher
WRONG. He can't play.......hmm........
Nevermind
I don't see what fame and fortune have to do with virtuosity but anyway.. Mastering all the technic almost perfectly is a kind of virtuosity, so yes, Guthrie Govan is a Virtuoso. And he doesn't have to choose between that and teaching haha! he does both!
(and if we really talk about virtuoso, maybe don't choose Satch and Slash as exemples..)
0:23 Eric Johnson, 0:38 James Taylor, 0:55 Pete Townsend, 1:04 The Edge, 1:24 B.B. Wheres Kirk Hammett
...
Lol
No Jimmy Page?😢
@@6EndlessNameless9Robert Johnson would've been cool too, just as a change of pace.
George Lynch deserves a place too
Gary Moore :'(
Brilliant, Guthrie is the best guitarist out there at the moment!
Danny Brew next to steve vai probably
Sparky vai Allen true enough!
Sparky vai Allen steve vai couldn't even carry this guy's guitar case.
dave brown grow up you nerk they are both awesome guitarists
dave brown that really is a stupid comment. Guthrie is an amazing guitarist but so is Steve Vai and lots of other guitarists. There is no such thing as the best guitarist and it is not a competition....everyone can shine.
14 years ago and this is still a mind-blowing performance
This just made me realize the video was uploaded a whopping 14 years ago. Holy smokes
He plays Zack Wylde better than Zack Wylde plays Zack Wylde
Sounds like old Zakk :)
Yeah. Suck he can't do Zakk Wylde...
danielandhisguitar I feel like Zakk's was the only one that didn't sound like the original.
Not hard
you said Zack Wylde so many times it doesn't even sound real...
Zaaaack...
Zack W-eye-uhl
*Z-a-ck W-eye-uuuhhhlllldddd*
Yngwie and Paul Gilbert were SPOT on
They all were.
The bit of BB King at 1:24 made me smile, first three notes just spoke to my soul just like BB himself :-)
at this point in Guthrie's career, you can't even say that he's not right up there with Gambale and Holdsworth. Even if you don't like his music, you can't deny his ability to combine every style as well as every technique. He's mastered tapping and shredding just as much as jazz and blues. AND, the biggest and of all, he still keeps it musical and plays simple, melodic licks. If you're a true musician, you can't deny GG's skill even if you're not a fan.
No one can deny he is a good musician and a great rock guitarist.
What can easily be denied is him being up there with Holdsworth, and even Gambale for various reasons.
He doesn't have even 10% of Holdsworth's harmonic depth and improvisational skills, nor the body of work or originality Holdsworth has. He is not even in the same genre. Nor he is in the same genre as Gambale, but i would admit closer to his level than Holdsworth. Gambale has been hanging in with the greats of Jazz for 30 years, like Chick Corea. Gambale only makes rock records for fun. I don't see Guthrie having the improvisational skills and harmonic depth to make it in a band with Chick Corea. End of story.
@@user-ov5nd1fb7s
Not even 10%? Get the fuck over yourself.
@@ToveriJuri yes. He isn't even 1%.
@@user-ov5nd1fb7s
How would you know when you don't have even 0.00001% of it compared to either of them?
@@ToveriJuri because I can analyse harmony? I am that far away from Holdsworth, yes. Considerably closer to Guthrie.
Why was paul gilbert written Pablo Giblerto hahah
+Mika Tarkela (Floge) Hahaha it sounds so wrong, yet so right.
Maybe it's jab at his "flamingo" video when he states that he can't play real flamenco, therefore the misspelled Spanish surname.
It's a reference to his second instructional video where a mariachi band introduce him as "Pablo Gilberto"
Ah! Thanks for clarifying!
also he got a track named Gilberto concerto, it's a Bach cover :D
Guthrie is just amazing as a player but what crowns him as a true great is his humble and gracious demeanor
im in awe when he played Tom Morello!! what an amazing player guthrie is!
If the Edge was that good I'd go and watch U2!!!
Jason Hendrix edge is better lmao
@Scram Jam nope, I cannot...most overrated band period.
1:40 Just that single note made every hair on my body rise.. Guthrie has sooooo much feeling in his playing!!!
Its a placebo .
Yeah.. let me bend a note slow.. so much feel!! you folk are so easy to impress.
i love that part when he transfers from Albert Lee to EVH. it's such a huge difference, yet it's so natural. Guthrie owns..ALL.
For everyone asking, why he doesn't mimic, or cover Allan Holdsworth? In a interview, Guthrie said Allan is the one and only guitar player that he would never try to cover or duplicate his sound. If that doesn't speak volumes at what a legend Allan is I don't know what does. Allan has a sound and uniqueness of his on that nobody can ever touch.
+John Carter That's respect. Just the way Joe Satriani has said that he can't do some of the harmonic stuff that Jeff Beck does. Pure respect. Also like Stevie Ray Vaughn who said he would never take the guitar out of his brother's hand and when on stage with them, would never cut somebody like Albert King.
+John Carter ....................... ever hear of Shawn Lane??
+omegapointil Yes, his album Powers of Ten or Vai's Passion and Warfare are my second and third favorite guitar albums, behind Holdsworth's Secrets album being my favorite.
+omegapointil Shawn Lane was a huge Holdsworth fan as well. I think there is even a video of Shawn star struck next to him. Honestly these three guitarists are people I consider "guitar gods"
what ? fuck holdsworth .. he is definitely a brilliant player , but to say he is the Only one that he will not cover or duplicate his sound because of uniqueness or anything else is a fucking slam and a piss to the other great guitarist whom he fucking did not have a mind covering . . makes no fucking sense , holdsworth is definitely not the best guitarist on the fucking face of the earth . . fuck outta here
So good to see Sco on the roster of guitarists.
Man's a legend - best feel and timing of anyone ever.
A GO GO should be required listening to any guitarists interested in developing feel and timing as feel.
Totally Epic.
Luv and Peace.
Funny thing that Scofield was one of the few which didnt really sound convincing in this clip
@@ErwinvanAsperen Agreed. I knew it was him but relative to the rest it wasn't as good of an impression.
His David Gilmour was fantastic. Well, they all were actually
***** Huh? The Yngwie and Paul were way off in almost every sense. The tones, just for a start, both sound much too thin. His Steve Vai impression is the only one which could fool people. (I feel I should also mention that Guthrie has disowned this recording as a pointless job he did just for the cash, and I can totally see why).
YummyBananaFish Well tbf to get really close to the original artists sounds you need to be using their guitar's, amps etc, which I i am sure he does not have, but i think the techniques and licks are very close.
I thought his Gilmour was the weakest. Too rushed without the real Gilmour feel.
LOVED the Vai and the Knopfler impressions they were just so real!
Guthrie has legendary mastery of the guitar... he makes it sound so natural. Respect!!!
Too many insecure critics on here. Guthrie Is a dominant player in almost ever genre, learn to accept the future and stop living in the past.
***** Music is not a competition, there's no dominating nobody, mate. Govan is a great player, that's it. You got this stuff confused with MMA.
He is freakin awsome.
but can he play like lil wayne?
I bet you're 'avin a laugh
Nobody can, they say that lil Wayne taught Nick Jonas himself
Jack is awesome absolutely incredible, it’s a blessing to be alive at the same time to such raw talent
Nah
Hell no! Lil Wayne is a virtuoso of the parallel universe.
All guitarists are great, but Guthrie - the best!
That's true
without a doubt.
Shawn Lane was just on another level though i'm still in disbelief every time i hear him go off.
Allan Holdsworth cough cough!
Guitar4Students
The best guitarists (or bands) write stuff that grabs the public's attention, like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Boston, Aerosmith, etc. It's not about technical proficiency, so much as it is finding riffs that resonate with people. Extreme technical accuracy or mimicing note-for-note is almost a pointless exercise in a way, because it won't make you rich or famous, or make people happy, unless there is original heartfelt composition behind it.
The Edge going to B.B King ... chills.. that's music right there. All of this is absolutely superb... pure genius.
i love the al di meola part so much
Seems like nobody here knows the story behind this. The players imitated here were not of Guthries choosing. They are the result of a poll in a guitar magazine for "Best xxx", and it was done years ago. Guthrie himself has noted, that he himself thinks both the poll and the video/music were and are useless and ridiculous. He needed the money and it was the magazine who comissioned everything.
Nikolaj Haun Hansen no need to downplay this amazing tribute to each players style. There's not a single guitar player in the world that could come close imitating the nuance in each player's touch. bravo Guthrie
I'm just quoting Guthrie on his thoughts on this piece.
+Pprovo1 His comment is about being in tune with Guthrie's wishes. If you don't know, Guthrie is an incredibly humble person. The idea of mimicking other guitarists is pretty atrocious to him. He's actually apologized for this track, and as Nikolaj said just did it for the money. I fully support broadcasting the intentions and story behind this piece of music, so people don't get the wrong idea of what it's about.
+Nikolaj Haun Hansen Great guy Guthrie Govan :)
Chuck Norris does Guthrie Govan imitations :-D
and i will just use a ukelele to do that.
Chuck Norris and play with feets
BAHAHAHAHAHAHA! while working out on a Total Gym no less! You go, Chuck!
With a triangle
I love this. I like to shred as much as anyone, but it really made me remember why I love Beck, Knopfler, Gilmour and Hendrix. You don't need a million notes to create memorable, effective solos.
This was one of the first videos I watched on youtube
Eric Johnson, classic riff !! The Opening !!
3:55 Guthrie Govan is the *ONLY* person I have ever heard that can sound like Jeff Beck. .
And THAT is somethng totally unique. .
He's the perfect guitarist lol
So Well thought out, implemented & performed. As well as great 'Greats' choices & tone mimic, WOW!
This is one of the coolest videos I've seen in a long time. Guthrie is soooo sick. Amazing.
Not a big master in one type? Come on, for me, and a lot of forum people, he's one of the best fussion players we've ever heard, he has created a whole new style of playing, mixing fussion into progressive rock is an amazing achievement, the use of any mode at anytime over any chords just blows my mind every day, i mean, listen to fives, or erotic cakes, he is the master on any kind of music he wants to people, for me, the best guitar player alive
The magazine should have included Allan Holdsworth, Greg Howe, Brett Garsed ,Ron Jarzombek & Jason Becker.
He's a wonderful guitarist. Only quibble I have is the "Jimi" solo at the end lacked the emtional magnificence of the real thing. Impossible to imitate.
Very very true. You wrote what I was thinking.
That feeling... to have the mastery of an instrument to such a level where you know you can pretty much play anything written for it, must be off the charts. Respect for that alone.
what a scary player...love the whole track...many of my faves ...this guy is epic period...I hope the younger generations get inspired by this
Guthrie, the best of mimics of all times!!!
That was great! Since most commenting have a particular guitarist missing from the list, I'll add SRV as mine! He helped resurect the blues during the big hair band era
Clearly Guthrie absolutely nailed each of this beautifully, but I'm more amazed at how he got all those so incredibly resemblant to their original counterparts!
Oh fuck, Hendrix fanboys are worse than Slash fanboys.
michael jordan Nice arguments! I feel ashamed.
Oh fuck off! Both are great musicians, have changed the guitar playing community and the way we perceive and play music.
James Wellington I'm not talking about the musicians, I'm talking about the fanboys saying that "onoes noone can touch my idol!"
Picurs Oh right haha! Yeah; In that case I agree lol
Hammett fanboys are much worse hahahahahaha
Saw him live with The Aristocrats, seriously blew my mind how ridiculously talented they are. Got to talk to them after as well, seriously humble dudes.
The extended section for Hendrix is like the prayer to cap it off.
How lucky we all are as guitarists to be living in a time when such off the scale talent and equipment exists. Every day is like Christmas thanks to innovative genius and honest work by millions of people.
Best feel: Gary Moore.
Yassin Serghini I totally agree with you. As far as feeling, Gary is on my top list! Miss him so much!
Should've been Best feel: Peter Green
Unpopular opinion but straight facts
I agree completely.
“Guthrie gives shred a good name. It's absolutely heartwarming to hear someone play super fast and have MUSICAL DEPTH to match" - Paul Gilbert (guitarist)
“What sets Guthrie apart, is, no matter what he’s doing, he mixes everything up gracefully and absolutely nails each approach. And all the while the music SOUNDS NATURAL.” Joe Satriani (guitarist)
"GG sounds, to my humble ears, like he's been programmed by a computer guy in Tokyo" - romfordmobbsy (pretentious music critic/youtube tough guy)
i remembered this from overdrive magazine in thailand. It's amazing that I just realize it was mimiced by Guthrie himself.
The Zakk Wylde one was total shit... So spot on!
I also heard that they had Tommy Emmanuel on the list ( best finger picker in the world ) He tastefully declined that one and I don't blame him one bit. Great video thanks for posting!
+Bob Smith -- I would have had Tommy Emmanuel on the list for best Harp Harmonics, which he got from Lenny Breau and then elevated to the sublime.
+Start The Rebellion Cascade harmonics and he's the best at it. Guthrie could not mimic Tommy his list of tunes he plays as well is massive.,
Tommy!
Loved it! You forget it's Guthrie playing the whole time. I do anyway. I personally would have put Allan Holdsworth for best legato. He really pioneered the style. And I would have added Frank Gambale for best sweeping. He was a big pioneer of that too.
One of the Greatest videos on UA-cam by one of the Greatest Guitar players of our time. I tip my hat sir...
It is kinda weird that the best guitarist in history, still isn't that famous.
This is actually quite amazing how well the tone and playing are for each imitation. Guthrie is truly a Guitar God
He is an emulator ,a great skill for a guitar teacher.
I really loved the tom morello bit.
I find almost every guitarist imitatable with the exception of Jeff Beck. His phrasing is so amazing. I have heard many great musicians cover his tunes, but never has anyone come close to emulating his style well enough to fool me. Guthrie's an amazing guitarist and I totally respect his realm of imagination. But no one can do Beck like Beck.
Would love to see Guthrie re-do this with his own nominations for each category!!
Dang feriners comin in here and takin all are guitar jobs
That was fun.
Ade Stickbaby Exactly. That was the Point. Have a good time, maybe melt some faces. Certainly not to jumpstart a shitstorm in your friendly, neighborhood comment section. Ye gods.
Guthrie,You are a musician able to replicate the sound & style of others, yet your own is unique & quite varied. I'm really enjoying tour musical journey.

The only one I wasn't sure about is Scofield
Best pinched harmonics Zakk???? Dimebag should be there.
Dime did more regular harmonics. the dive bomb technique didnt use pinch harmonics.
dime did a ton of artificial harmonics with the whammy bar not really a lot of pinch harmonics like zak does all the time.
Dime for taste
Waaay overrated
Best compliment I can play is I didn't realise it was Guthrie playing until half way through, outstanding!
Absolutely fantastic..!
Guthrie is an emulator pure & simple. And that is a great feat and way of developing ones own voice. He has no originality but will make a great guitar teacher.
This was a job for a magazine and there are enough "goverisms" in his playing that let you identify him.

This was a lot of fun.
there should be a most melodic one for John Frusciante , but I guess he had such a variety in his style that it would be very hard to play something recognizable in his style, well maybe the two note stuff, I don't know.
this comment is proof that hendrix is god !

he really nailed all of them, but Steve Vai and Jeff Beck were two favorites!

Incredible...well done Guthrie! The hardest guitarist to mimic: David Gilmour.
Really bruh
He did a great rendition.
@Teddy Gant Don't be silly, he was pretty much spot on with everyone.
The only thing that didn't match up was tone, if he would have used like a strat with a lot of bass and mid on neck position it would have worked out better imo
@@wiebenijenhuis1825 I'm sure if he reads these comments he will take onboard your observations.
kind of sad Jason Becker and Shawn Lane weren't added as well. thery were amazing virtuoso's
Shawn lane... Were? O.o still is :P
Darrell Knight but he is dead...
yeah thats true
John Wayne JR why use an apostrophe for pluralization?
Thanks Guthrie!! Feakin put a big smile on my face!
Wow!! And that's why I share the opinion that Guthrie is the most incredible electric guitarist on the planet right now! Good work!!
It took me a minute to realize who Pablo Gilberto was.
yap..he missed Gilbert a bit...because he used to much gain on him..Pablo mostly plays extremly dry..but anyway..that Vid is just plain sick
I think this video shows well how unique a player Jimi was. I think Guthrie nails all the others pretty damn well and accurately, but with Jimi there's just that little something missing. All the others were excellent and Jimi part certainly wasn't bad either but his style is just so hard to mimic.
it sounds more like Guthrie playing blues with a fuzz than jimi
Imagine Jimi trying to copy Guthrie if he could. That definitely wouldn't sound good
+fredo gumbo Most likely not. Nowadays there are such technical monsters that likes of Jimi and EC wouldn't stand a chance. Gotta admit that Guthrie also has the musicality and feel like the old masters in addition to ridicilous technical ability.
nabaloo Yeah, he has it all and more. Hard pressed to find another guitarist with that amount of talent these days.
agreed.

Correct.
this man is all of every one and his self too- it can;t get any better
So I've probably watched this like 30 times in 5 days. I love the BB King part the best and like many others the Knopfler part as well.
