Cool build. Some advice from personal experience - electric carving knife makes short work of foam. For the next build, consider using high density foam as it will provide more support and better contact. Finally, consider making the padding and board removeable and replaceable for when it wears out. Your current design requires removing staples and scraping glued foam off of your bench, versus having padding and back board that you can swap on and off of a bench.
@furi all your advice is right on. Except you had to add the 'cool build'... it's ok man, you can just be honest, he's YTuber doing this professionally, it's ok to call out his rushed crap.
@@googleyoutubechannel8554 It is a cool build - I’m not trying to be sarcastic or ironic. I never would have thought to build a bench out of wood. This bench is something that makes weightlifting and exercise more accessible to people on a budget, and therefore is cool to me.
I've used a carving knife for this before and it really was a life saver. I was using a utility knife before I remembered I had an electric carver, and not only was it faster and more accurate, but it also eliminated the risk of marking up my work surface with the blade or dulling the knife on the work surface.
So I had picked up an electric carving knife to cut foam but it gives up pretty soon and is slow(maybe I did something wrong). I eventually used a long serrated bread knife. Game changer!
I think those might be the Hart tools, but it would be prudent to paint over them since the sponsorship would have been short-term and fulfilled on his end, and this way he's not giving them advertising for free.
😊 WOW! I love all of your videos Mike. Thank you for sharing all of your projects and plans with us. I have to say you make it very easy for us to just start building 😅 I'm currently cleaning out a room for my future Pink Home Gym. I will be making everything out of wood & cement. I'm very exited to share my content as well for all of my ladies out there, that aren't confident with tools. I'm very handy my self but for some reason you also inspire me to share as well my knowledge with the world and not just keep it to my self. I will totally tag you 🎉 and give you full credit once I start building every single of your projects and many more. Thank you again, blessings 🙌
Nice build. I might be wrong, but I think "Plastic Wood" usually has the lid on the bottom. I think it has something to do with how the product settles in the can.
Use a super sharp bread knife for cutting foam! And if you are ever interested in doing more upholstery buy the Porter Cable 22gage pneumatic upholstery stapler. I'm a furniture repair man and I use that every day and it is my favorite tool! Use 3/8" length staples they are the perfect size.
This is an awesome build. I’m into fitness and love seeing stuff like this. Although I saved up to purchase my home gym I have now. Great alternative though.
I use a coping saw for cutting thick foam 😉. And for the lining you should follow the technique for the frames canvas, so you leave the fabric tighter and without visible folds. More aesthetic 👌
I use a long straight edge with c clamps to squash the foam down as much as possible. A utility knife makes short work of it. The other way is I reverse my circular saw blade.
I have found a machete works perfect. I happened upon this by accident and is was clean and didn’t fuzz from 30 passes. It will need to be sharpened (works best). Also use slow slicing motion with the smaller foam piece hanging over counter edge or tailgate on pickup.
Very nice job Mike. Hopefully you get great use out of it my friend. Can't wait to see ur next videos. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work my friend. Keep making. 1-800 Super pro. God bless.
Might work construction so he can spot his shit if no one gives it back or sees someone else walking around with all his tools. Painted mine bright red
The fact that this is so sturdy and affordable is sick... but the main thing I like is that it looks dope :O I'm tempted to make one with some fancy joinery now haha
Easiest way to cut foam in a flat square form is to set the foam over a rounded edge like a 5in pvc pipe or anything similar so that as you're cutting the foam with an exacto knife it is pulling itself apart on its own while your cutting.
For lifting HEAVY weights, metal is ideal. But this is 100% effective for lifters who aren't trying to do bodybuilding/powerlifting numbers which is most lifters. I can see this as a daily user just for staying fit and lifting a good amount of weight and packing on muscle.
I budgeted the price of wood, fabric, foam and adhesive and it added very close to the price of buying a weight bench. So I bought the weight bench. I'll end up building this but I have to work the laziness out of me first
6:25 bro what even is this. It's like seeing a diWHY posts on Facebook. There's gotta be a better solution here rather than glopping epoxy into mobile casters to make them static.
i am too lazy for a weight bench, a few alterations and i see a nice big footstool, best design i have seen so far as i want it to be sturdy and open underneath.
You don’t need foam on a thick wooden bench. Wood is the most perfect platform to bench off. Padded benches came about as a strong wood bench is very heavy. When York started making steel frame benches which were strong and lighter, a surface was required that did the job (of not bench against tubular steel which would fucking hurt) and didn’t add weight. Seriously people try thick wood platforms if you get the chance. Really comfortable and you feel everything. I’m not having a go at your build btw. Just letting people know 👍

Looks like a solid bench. Have you built an incline "adjustable" bench yet?
Bread knife works on foam well, but also a tool you may have in your shop or access to which also works is a bandsaw
I cannot wait to start building like this. Currently no experience but excited and think this videos will help
You might want to pick up a cheap electric carving knife for cutting thick foam. It works great. Nice build.

I want one now!!

Did Hart require you to spraypaint your non-hart drills?
Yeah it's kinda weird honestly
I think those might be the Hart tools, but it would be prudent to paint over them since the sponsorship would have been short-term and fulfilled on his end, and this way he's not giving them advertising for free.

if that's the case I'm going to feel really dumb 😂
Still, it was worth it to see him play with that glove!!- so funny that he edited it in!
What made you decide to go with fabric instead of pleather or leather?
Awesome bench! Tip for cutting foam...use a carving knife, yes the kitchen utensil that you use for carving meat, it works great!
Why did you paint you craftman tools yellow?
I've used an exact knife to cut thick foam as well. I extended it fully and heated it up with a torch.
You can cut the foam with a chef's knife or a breadknife. Nice build BTW 😉
nice!!! thanks :)
You can go liowtech with a serrated bread knife to cut foam. Takes a little longer but an electric knife works great.
I second the bread knife! Works and already have in the kitchen
For cuting thick foam use a knife that is very sharp and is big enought to go all the way through for very clean cuts.

Is there going to be a series on a gym build out?

I know this is a popular DIY channel, but it kind of feels like a how a toddler shows their grandma a drawing they're so proud of.
Victorinox makes an awesome line of chef knives with black rubber handles. One of their serrated bread knives would be perfect for cutting foam
Agree love those knifes
I use a coping saw for cutting thick foam 😉.

Tomorrow?! But I'm ready to watch the home gym build now...

Will do!! Thanks Jared
Try using an electric carving knife like the one you would use for turkey/hams for your future foam needs, it works awesome...
@modernbuilds - where are the plans for the squat rack / bench rack? It said "tomorrow morning" ... is it posted somewhere?
What would you use to waterproof the material?
Why do you work on the floor and not on a table?
Does your back hurt?
for cutting the thick foam try using a batt insulation knife!
Real smooth how you sneaked that commercial in the middle
Electric bread knife cuts foam a treat!!
Band saw is my go to for cutting foam!
Great work!! Do you know the height and length?
ive heard of people using carving knives or bread knives (the serrated style ones) for cutting foam before
Electric carving knife works fantastic!
Mike, why is your workshop always empty? I saw you put a bench in there! WHERE IS IT
To cut foam, go to a thrift shop and find one of those electric carving knives. Suprisingly foam is the one thing it actually cuts well!
How much weight can this support? Thanks!
with upholstery, or stretching a canvas, start in the center and work your way out to the corners for better results
Bread knife works wonders on foam
I really want to know what happened to the painted 18v tools. What did Hart do?
Haha I was thinking the same thing
This is literally the reason that I'm scrolling through the comments lol.

Don't think they are Hart - looks like Craftsman. Especially towards the end where you can see an unpainted battery.

Metal cutting blade works for me when cutting memory foam.
Can you make the legs foldable so you can storage the bench somewhere
Awesome build! May be jigsaw would work to cut the thick foam
possibly!!

Do it!! some nice mortise and tenon joints!
Flip over the can of wood filler to find the opening.
That wood filler is to be stored upside down. Lol he cut it open with a can opener hahahahahahaha

I've had luck with turning my circular saw blade backwards and you can use that to cut foam
