- This is a slowed down time-lapse video of me working on my painting, 'Peacock Spirit'. It demonstrates how to achieve the look of peacock feathers by using alcohol inks in addition to acrylic and india inks on Yupo paper.

So beautiful!
Thank you, Monica! ☺️
It was fun to watch the peacock unfolding. I love the balance of abstract and detail that you created.
Thank you so much for your comment and for taking the time to watch! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
What a revelation thanks to your video...using not only acrylic ink, but prismacolor along with alcohol inks to create the desired effect. Thank you very much...I now can let go of some old "rules".
You are most welcome! I'm so happy to know you found it helpful :)
Thanks, Ellen! Great video. I really like getting your commentary while watching the process. It's interesting to know what you are thinking and what tools you are using throughout! Thank you for sharing you very inspirational video!!

There are 17 peacocks next door to me ! You nailed it ! Just beautiful !
Oh my, Claudia! I can only imagine how vocal they must be! Thank you for your comment :)
Thank you for sharing. This was really beautiful.
If you spray isopropyl alcohol the inks will spread.
This is beautiful... I learned a lot! Thank you for this! Do you give other tutorials besides this one? Would love to see what else you do... :)
Thank you! And yes, I do have a couple of other videos on my channel which you might be interested in; I've slowed down a timelapse of me painting a lion and have a couple of other ink demos as well. I will be adding more of these soon! :)
Really enjoyed your demo, can I ask you if you need to spray a varnish medium on it before framing? Thanks
Hello, Linda! I recommend using a matte finish (Krylon has one) if your ink has dried fairly thick, especially. It can get sticky if too much ink has dried on the paper. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't, depending on this and where the work will be hung. The inks are light fast so I don't feel it's absolutely necessary but if in doubt, better safe than sorry.
There is no end to your talent, Ellen! Love the peacock! I have a question also. Can acrylic paint be laid down first for background color? Just wondering how that would look and work together, or if it would. Always appreciate your knowledge and guidance. ☺
Thank you for your lovely words regarding this painting! 😊 If you are searching for a similar style to this, then acrylic paint will not work, unfortunately. The inks need a smooth surface to spread and acrylic paint will give the paper too much 'tooth' and therefore just sit on top. If you are wanting to simply experiment and explore though, I say go for it!
Ellen Brenneman Studio Thanks, Ellen!
This was So helpful for me!!! Thank you! Question; what is the difference between acrylic and india inks? i know I ask a lot of basic questions but I am a totally self taught (and now Ellen taught) artist who finally has the luxury to paint every day and so incredibly grateful for that! :)
So glad you found it helpful, Claudia ☺️ And as for the difference between the two, there really aren't. They are both lightfast and behave so much alike that for me, I don't believe I'd be able to tell them apart if I had to. I tend to choose based on color because both brands offer exclusive colors.
Thank you! I bought an india ink set today and there wasn't BLUE!!! I can't believe that they would sell a set without blue!!!!@@EllenBrennemanStudio
Beautiful! --I was recently looking around to see if anyone was using acrylic paint over alcohol ink, and I didn't really find anything outside of playing with the mediums resisting. So I tried several brands of white acrylic paint over alcohol ink on the Ranger AI glossy cardstock and got a white tinted with the ink color underneath once dried (alcohol ink was dry before doing this) so I had decided it wasn't doable. Is that specific to white acrylic or do you find that the colors of acrylic and the alcohol ink do blend some? Just curious after I happened on to your video. Any thoughts appreciated!
Shana, I'm so sorry about this - I wasn't notified of your message and just happened to stumble across it. To answer your question, I've not had any success with acrylic paints in general when using AI over them. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the inks really do best when applied to a shiny surface as opposed to a matte surface (which is what happens when acrylic paints are applied first.). However, I wonder what would happen if you used one of those high gloss craft paints that they sell at Michael's/Hobby Lobby? I've not tried it but maybe that would offer a more pleasing effect? Good luck, and thank you so much for your question! :)
Beautiful, what was that black pencil called?
