How to paint a hummingbird - using acrylic inks on Yupo and watercolor paper

- This is a demonstration of how inks work on yupo paper vs. watercolor paper. It shows the differences in the way the inks move on each surface, how vivid the colors are, and my thoughts on using inks on both substrates.

Very educational. I have done a lot of playing with alcohol ink. One of the main reasons I use alcohol ink is for the brilliant colors. Seeing the way you are applying the acrylic ink, opens more doors of exploration for me. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

Ellen, I love your videos! Just discovered them via your gorgeous kingfisher. I've worked with inks/yupo, too, and totally agree with your assessment... I find I can get similar effects with my watercolors if I use hot press watercolor paper...the watercolors will show more vibrancy...similar to inks...and when I spray, the splatters will spread-but you do have to assist by moving the paper! This is a good reminder to really get to know your materials. Looking forward to more vids!

"YUPO Synthetic Papers are extruded from polypropylene pellets." So, it is very thin polystyrene sheet plastic.

Interesting - thanks! I just wanted to mention that you should not put your brush into the ink jars or on the droppers. Water does contain mold and bacteria' there is a chance you will ruin the entire jar of paint if contaminated. I have lost a couple paints that way (it doesn't aways happen but it is so sad when it does). I now use palettes to drop color into, then use brushes from there. If I mix water into anything (for example thinning ink that I plan to reuse), I now use distilled water.

I never used Yupo befour gunna try it but the water color paper seem like it gives you more control of the color in case you don't want the bleed effect

Thanks for this, because I find watercolor hard enough to control on WC Paper ,sometimes dabbing the paper if I need to control the Color with tissue , I still am v. hesitant to try Yupo paper , are they washable if I make a mistake since they are made of plastic, -- and start over ? Thx.

How do you seal the Yupo paper? I tried alcohol inks on some and the results were beautiful but weeks later when I went to put it in a frame the ink was still tacky and came right off the Yupo.
I mostly use acrylic inks. Those do not need to be sealed because the inks fuse to the paper. For anything with alcohol inks I use Krylon matte finish (though it does leave a bit of a 'dust-like' residue but doesn't affect the look of the artwork)

Hi, Colleen! I love using Legion Yupo paper or Do It On Yupo in 74 lb weight. I have not had much success with the translucent yupo paper. SO excited for you to get your inks! Let me know how you like them!!

What kind of pencil did you use for your sketch on the paper before the video?

Mary Nelson I have been regularly working with acrylic and India ink on hot press and the colors are extremely vibrant, but once that ink hits the paper it is there for good so I tend to have to work in layers and build color gradually. That seems to help 😊
Carefully smear a small amount of petroleum jelly around the screw area of ink bottles and watercolour and even acrylic tubes. Then you’ll have no trouble opening.

I am just a beginner and was wondering if after the paint dries is it easily scratched or rubbed accidentally?
Don Solomon hello! I have found that immediately after the ink dries it can be scratched off. But if it sits for 24 hours it becomes permanent. I don’t know if it is because it needs time to cure but either way, it would be difficult to remove once it sets. Hope this is helpful 😊
Thank you, over the years I have tried putting paint on plastic and it is easily removed. But not all plastics are the same.

Julie Barron acrylic ink and India inks are both lightfast and waterproof, however, if you work on yupo you can lift the inks off with rubbing alcohol. Hope this helps!

Claudia Chappel yes, I sure do! If I’m doing an alcohol ink painting I will often use acrylic inks for shading - they are great for that! The color Sepia by Bombay India inks has s especially good for this. I will also use acrylic inks as a wash for the background instead of alcohol inks if I want a more dreamy, watercolor effect. 😊

How do you trace on yup paper?
Marylou Niebrugge I sketch out my work onto tracing paper first; this way I can make all the necessary changes I need (yupo does not do well with eraser marks when using inks). Then I lay the tracing paper overtop of the Yupo paper and gently slide my pencil underneath, tracing a light outline with as little detail work as possible - so very, very basic because I don't want the pencil marks to show through the ink in the end. No worries about indentations on the paper this way. Because it's plastic it's pretty sturdy. I hope this helps! :)
are all these inks permanent and or colorfast?
Eileen Blair they do have a 3-4 Star lightfast rating according to their website, though the fluorescent colors are not. I hope this helps! 😊
Is the india ink the same as acrylic ink? or does it just behave the same?
Sherry Kenwood great question! They both have the same consistency and act identical to one another for the techniques I use them for 😊
What number brush?
Marylou Niebrugge unfortunately I don’t have the information to answer that question. The brush I’m using is one I have had since 1990 and it’s my favorite brush. All of the coating has worn off of it and it is down to the bare wood so I cannot even tell you what brand it is. I would search for a small round; this comes closest to the one I’m using.

Thank you for an interesting and informative video but please remember YUPO is NOT paper. It is not organic, it is not biodegradable. YUPO is 100% polypropylene ( a kind of plastic) as it says on the front of your pad. Please explain that you are painting on a plastic sheet and it will behave in much the same way as a plastic palette.
