Wood BOARD AND BATTEN Siding Installation - Using Lumber Milled from the Trees on Our Land

  • Hey Ya’ll. Here is how we are installing the wood board and batten siding on the new house. We are using the lumber that we milled from the trees on the land. About two years ago, we had a portable saw mill brought to our property (video link below), and we milled a lot of lumber. It dried for about 2 years before we used it. I primed all the boards front, back and sides before we put them up.

Very nice. Very sturdy walls. I am in the middle of taking all of my board and batten off and doing repairs. Stripping and priming all the board and battens front and rear and replacing those that need it. Quite a few of the boards were C cupped from the weather. Had to get inventive to get them all flat again, but it looks good. Great job, if I was close I would come by and help out. Hope you enjoy it when finished.

Oh man, stripping and priming all your boards from and back. That sounds like a big job. I primed all of ours front and back. I hope they hold up for a long time.

Great video! I'm confident I can do it too, but this really cements that thought. Thanks

Not sure this will get a response, but I'd love to know the stud finder being used to find the wall studs through the sheathing. I'll be doing the same project this spring and of course finding studs after the housewrap is on is a pain. A reliable stud finder would be key.

Just curious, with the furrings strip install horizontally , how do you account for potential water drainage behind your siding?

I dont know. I thought about that, but couldn't find anyway around the horizontal furring strips. I talked to some framers/carpenters in the area, and they said this is the way they do it with no problems. There shouldn't be large amounts of water that gets behind it. Any small amount that gets back there will hopefully evaporate since it isn't air tight. Some options might be a rainscreen system, dimpled house wrap, or some air vents in the siding. I didn't pursue any of these options because I wasn't that concerned about it. Hope this helps.

What I've read about is installing furring diagonally around the house so water runs along the furring and comes out at the bottom onto the flashing. I'm debating not using furring at all because I'm in a high altitude desert and get very little rain.

I cut half inch channels on my horizontal furring strips to help water escape an air to move. Placing the channels facing the wall obviously

I know this is old, but one trick I've read about and might use on my project is to rip strips of T1-11 grooved exterior plywood for the furring strips. Then you apply it with the grooves facing the wall and that creates drainage/ventilation channels while still providing a solid material to fasten the boards to.

Is there anyway to share more details on how the windows were flashed and trimmed out. Thanks.

I have a video showing how I installed and flashed the windows. The trims is just 2x4s on the sides and bottom, and a 2x6 on top. All of that is outlined with a 1x3 turned on its edge. Hope that helps.
