"Salt Of The Earth" by The Rolling Stones
Composers: Mick Jagger and Keith Richards
Lyrics:
Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the lowly of birth
Raise your glass to the good and the evil
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Say a prayer for the common foot soldier
Spare a thought for his back breaking work
Say a prayer for his wife and his children
Who burn the fires and who still till the earth
And when I search a faceless crowd
A swirling mass of gray and black and white
They don't look real to me
In fact, they look so strange
Raise your glass to the hard working people
Let's drink to the uncounted heads
Let's think of the wavering millions
Who need leading but get gamblers instead
Spare a thought for the stay-at-home voter
Empty eyes gaze at strange beauty shows
And parades of the gray suited grafters
A choice of cancer or polio
And when I look in the faceless crowd
A swirling mass of grays and black and white
They don't look real to me
Or don't they look so strange
Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the lowly of birth
Spare a thought for the rag taggy people
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Let's drink to the hard working people
Let's drink to the salt of the earth
Let's drink to the two thousand million
Let's think of the humble of birth

One of the best albums in rock history. Pure gritty rock n' roll. Brilliant.
Exactly
Yeah, Keith sings, "never want to be like Papa, working for the man every night and day," on "Happy." He had a very strong feeling about working class people because his father was like that, pride in who you are. Of course, Keith didn't want to live like that but he still respected it. I started out working hard in construction when I was 15 then went on to work in factories and mills. The folks you meet are good people.
This song is one the Stones best. Jagger and Richards achieved brilliance on this album. I love this acknowledgement of the unsung and unglorified!
20 million Grandma's wave there hankies in the air.
They were making fun of the faceless crowd that looks so straaaaange. The Stones were assholes for doing this song.
Stones only folk song i think.......afte r last nights debate " a choice between cancer and polio!"
Always reminds of my late Dad. Worked in the same north Wales factory for 45 years (except for the war), couldn't read or write but kept a roof over our heads and food on the table.
Reminds me of me
REAL!
The real Salt of the Earth- here;s to your Dad,,-the builders of our world
Nuff respect to your dad.
Drink one for Charlie...the soldier that never left his post.
...and if you get the chance, listen to the mono mix of this song. It's far more even and Watts' playing has some good thump.
IMO the best Jagger/Richards songwriting. Early critics dismissed this band as dishevelled ruffians but they were keen observers of contemporary (duplicitous) society.
You SUP right in da dup, sir
That's so deep
The best Rock 'n Roll band ever.
Mick and Keith sharing lead vocals on this great song, perfect closing for "Beggars Banquet", one of their best albums.
Let's drink for the greatest rock and roll band in the world!
Beggars is the best!
Second best band, Beatles is first
@@thebrycksfeaturingcobrakai794 if we're talking strictly of rock and roll The Stones are the best in my opinion.
The Beatles are the best in general.
@@peliche77 This.
I concur
Let's drink to the stones' music!
prefer to sip on a spliff
Santé!!.
I'll drink to that. Hell I'll drink to anything....
Thats what I'm doing now
I gonna pass out before the first verse is over. 😴😴😴
Not just a song, but an anthem. And very few artists can claim something like that.
A perfect song for the common people.
Yes, you are alright
Mick is mocking them related theme on Beggars Banquet (album title itself another go at this ) with Street Fighting Man
Salt of the Earth and Loving Cup are my two favorite Rolling Stones songs. Pride and the Badge and The Chair are my two favorite Marty Robbinsd songs.
I received the "Beggar's Banquet" album as a Christmas gift from my younger brother back in 1969. It made a Stones fan out of me for the rest of my life.
Wiw!
Sorry.
Wow!
My high-and-mighty friend just met the working folks, now she works with "the masses”. Now she sings this song!!! (Humility is Endless)
I saw them play this live. That was one of the highlights of my life. No joke. Up there with seeing the Norwegian Fjords, a Vermeer painting in person, seeing Ray Davies play Shangri-La (another barely played masterpiece) and falling in love for the first time. My favourite Stones song and they've only played it in concert five times.
They played it with Guns N Roses in 89. Then at the 9/11 concert at MSG.
Totally agree. This is one of my favourite Stones songs, and I would have given much of what I own to hear Ray Davies perform Shangri-La live with the Crouch End Chorus.
you've had an interesting life man
Charlie RIP. Your contribution to this song is spot on. You played understated, and knew when to lay it on.
One of the best albums of all time ❤
Ya and guess what!? No Mick Taylor. What can the Taylor idiots say about this.
@@kevgh3869
Mick Taylor was hired for live shows. Keith played almost all his guitar parts on the records. It is why Taylor left. Keith could not walk all over Ron Wood becouse he was already famous and accomplished.
The further they got from Brain the more the muse wore off.
It is and always will be, i remember when it was released its as clear as yesterday, and i even remember what i was doing then ----1968!!
@@StanSwan that's not true ray, only on let It bleed did keith play all the guitars. And Mick plays only on one song on that album.Taylor played about sixty-five to seventy percent of the guitar parts on every album he played on.some songs ... like winter.... Keith doesn't even play on .just about every solo was Mick Taylor even in the studio. Sway, winter,, time waits for no one, ventilator blues, Dead Flowers, 100 years ago, can't you hear me Knocking, all down the line,I could go on and on. He also plays all the slide guitar on every album.
This is for my Dad who raised 8 kids on a laborers wages. They don't make men like him anymore. Never heard him complain. Miss him alot.

OK: "The Stones are archaic and their music primordial. Why would I care?"
If you care about music, and rock and roll in particular, please take the time to listen to these three song collections, in chronological order, in original track sequence, LOUD, and ideally with some friends and a few low-toxicity adult mood enhancers.
Enjoy!

One of my favourite "deep cuts." Love Nicky Hopkins's piano work.
Nicky+Billy Preston had to be THE best RR pe-ano.
What a great anthem of Appreciation.
@@soxwina you forget Leon Russell. And I even would mention Harry Neillson, to a somewhat more subdued flavor.
Beautiful song!! Way underrated!! This song has so much soul. Beggars banquet as a whole has this just bluesy soul to it. Like Factory Girl. Its just so down to grit with soul
One of the Stones most shamefully underappreciated songs, nonetheless, among their very best.
Couldn't agree more. This should be one of the first things they put on the set list.
They sang this at The 911 NYC Tribute Concert is on u-tube...I don't know what it was officially called
Of the 1/2 dozen times I've seen them, they did it once that I remember. Excellent.
From their best album.😎✌
@@kenmartin6776 One of the bands best albums
I'd have to put the Stones up there as one of the best bands when it comes to lyrics. This whole album is lyrically amazing
Agreed! I can't think of a time in history where lyrical creativity and composition was more brilliant than this!
Agree, it’s so fun to sing along with Mick. Even in songs where it’s more about the groove, such as “Monkey Man,” it’s always fun to mimic Jagger.
To me they are no 1
Mick and Keith sung it at the 9/11 Concert at Madison Square Garden (along with Miss You). I think Paul Schaefer was leading the house band.
May the 68-72 Rolling Stones music run indefinitely in our ears and mind...
gotta go to '74
Gotta begin in 63

No from 1968 to 1975.was there best.
Lots of great stuff afterwards as well. You just gotta evolve like they did.
Working construction for 35 years I play this song loudly every labor day weekend neighborhood don't seem to mind all you hard working people Good bless you
Well said James. God Bless
James Ducharme thank you for doing a job that most people look at with disgust... god bless sir
I was a union organizer as a career. This song sums it all up
Nobody made musical perfection out of a simple song like the Stones. Their studio work is the blueprint of rock and roll bliss.
when ever we drink , lets always drink to the hard working people ...lets always drink to the SALT OF THE EARTH ...thank you MICK and KEITH ...BEAUTIFUL
Beggar's Banquet stands shoulder to shoulder with the very best albums of the late sixties.
YEAH RIGHT. I'M A HUGE FAN BUT BLUES IS LIMITED. THE BEATLES CLEANED UP WITH POP. STONES ARE TOP BLUES BAND BUT FOLKS PLAYED THE CRAP OUT OF BEATLES RECORDS. AFTER BRIAN THE ROLLING STONES WERE ONLY BLUES AND LATER RAGGAE, DISCO ETC.
My parents had a small farm in France. Life was difficult, we had little but we were happy.
Mes parents avaient une petite ferme , en France. La vie était difficile , nous avions peu mais nous étions heureux.
One of my favorite Stones songs. Nicky Hopkins' piano playing is great.
Nicky Hopkins was invaluable to the stones and the who etc
I like it too. I remember singling this song out in a comment to my brother years ago and he said, "I don't know, that's a song I generally skip when I play the album".
One of their more reflective songs -- Beggars Banquet in such a great album and has always been one of my favorites.
Same here.
Charlie Watts is all over this one, that's why I like it so much.
CW was, is, & will always be the classiest of all the drummers in the world. Past & Present.
He killed. It
Spot on Dean he fucking nails it. Yes I'm a drummer too.
may he rest in peace!
Absolutely, great comment
One of the very best. It has got to blow your mind how intoxicated and stoned these guys were when they wrote and recorded this. The capacity of the human mind is amazing.
Never underestimate cocaine.

This was the last album while Brian Jones still lived. The rumour was that Brian was into pretty heavy drug use.
one of the best songs by the Stones
Thank you very much, Jimmy Miller. Where ever you are.
Nicky Hopkins did monumental work for The Stones.
Keith has such a delicate voice. Love this.
U should here mick sing you got the silver
I swear this album is flawless.
Definitely a Stones favorite of mine. Love that whole Beggar's Banquet album. One of their best. 😎👍
So true" we need leaders get gamblers instead " great words
Yeah I think of that every time I go to vote
A timeless anthem with a great arrangement and some differences from 'typical Stones' songs that make it special. Great to hear Keith sing.
They were so good this Sticky Fingers Let it Bleed
The Mick Taylor years
Some of my favorite songs
That's how one does music ✌️
The first time Keith Richards' voice was ever heard without Mick singing over him. I'm just talking about the first verse at the beginning of the song.
You're confused. I said the FIRST time we ever heard Keith's voice by itself. Beggars Banquet (Salt of the Earth) was released in 1968@alisonruth8862
@@richardseegman803on Between the Buttons there's a song called Something Happend To Me Yesteday. This is the first one you can hear Keith singing solo parts...
The best ambum , 1968 ❤
Stones , I love you !!!
Album
thank you so much for all the happiness and joy through out the years Rolling Stones
The album closers are always the most underrated songs.
Ned D. Well... There are exceptions. When Kiss made the 'Dressed To Kill' album, they used their yet-to-be greatest hit as it's closer.
Yeah for sure Moonlight Mile!!
Why do I see you in every video related to good music, trout man?
" Shattered " is a killer last track on Some Girls ! Crazy Mama ! & how about ' Must be Hell ' ? ( to me that sounds a bit like Salt of the Earth's nasty relative ! )
Soul Survivor! And You Can't Always Get What You Want, though that' one's hardly underrated.
Just wonderful.

Thanks, Nicky! (It’s even in the graffiti.) His piano drives this.
Thank You for the Words on the wall, very well done...Bravo...
THE ROLLING STONES FOREVER! LONG LIVE THE ROLLING STONES!
what a song such wonderful lyrics...another classic
Mick Jagger had his replacement heart valve surgery in NYC, New York, USA. Why? He wanted to live! Long live the Rolling Stones. 4/5/19
Can't kill the Spirit!
@Willie Gordon No, but they are very good. My point is that the socialized health care in the UK was not good enough for Mick Jagger.
@@amerocker well yeah but he's got that Jagger money. Most people couldn't afford that if they worked all their adult life.

From the Stones best album . B Jones was there .
Favorite Rolling Stones song. Favorite song, period.
Unfortunately, this very significant work is underappreciated and underplayed.
Their music is so powerful that often the lyrics are overlooked.
IMO their (primarily Mick's) finest songwriting effort.
The album overall gets a lot of acclaim but this track in particular is more relevant than ever rn. Definitely one of the best the Stones ever made.
Not by me Burt …..not by all us Stoner's we like to hoard all the gems , and this one is in my collection
"Who need leaders but get gamblers instead." Jesus, but ain't it the truth.
One of the truly greats!
68-72 are the Stones powerful masterpieces era.
The Subtle Genius of Jagger and Richards; amongst their very best and most poetic and profound!

He sucks
I love this song it makes me think of my dad he was a blue collar man working on the assembly line in a car and truck plant. He worked there for 45yrs.
Mick was doing a great job with his lyrics in that era.
Nostalgic, and beautiful. Just how i like it.
THE ROLLING STONES ARE THE BEST ROCK AND ROLL AND BLUES BAND EVER AND FOREVER. CAN ALSO PLAY COUNTRY, REGGAE, GOSPEL. I LOVE THEM. ❤👍

Every song on this record album sounds like they are playing in the room with you. That's the big black disk with the a hole in the middle and grooves on each side, not the small disk with a bigger whole that sparkles in the sun. Just some advice for the 21st century kiddies.
