The Rolling Stones.
Instead of the other stuff, huh

Me too!
Yes that's the way it works for me to.
They are the coolest band ever 👍👍
That sax is one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard in my life. It is like he's playing a song that is seperate from the main song and which somehow repeatedly merges and seperates from the main song.
Exactly.
I think it's Sonny Rollins playing sax.
Hey 80s music 80s movie music be nothing without the sax,
These are just peacfuul timez
I believe the sax player is Charlie Keys.He played on so many Stones hits.
There's something very melancholic about this song reflecting back at that time not one person looking down at a phone
It's pure pleasure, as it was back then!!!! Love this song!! Their old songs are really great!!!❤❤❤...
I remember asking random people on the street “how do I go to xx place, where is the nearest xx shop,” and of course in bars “what was the score in the xx game” …. I kinda miss that
Think that nostalgic is a better word.

Not true rolling stones, cause no jones no Stones
@@Adit_Fadil Absurd comment. History has proved he was irrelevant for the band's success, achieving it's true identity with Richard's and Jagger's involvement, taking it to a legend status.
@@rubenlopezusa History has proven that Jones was the founder of Rolling Stone and made him a band. Imagine if Jones had'nt died at a young age, Rolling Stone could have become a big band because of Jones.
What a gorgeous solo from Sonny Rollins. I love the story behind this. Jagger wanted to ask Rollins, probably the top jazz sax man of the time, to put a solo on the song. Charlie Watts - a serious jazz fan - said 'he'll never do it'. But Jagger asked, and Rollins indeed said no. But Rollins' wife persuaded him. When the saxman came into the studio, Jagger was nervous about working with a jazz great, and asked Rollins how he wanted to go about it. Rollins said, you stay in the studio with me, you dance and I'll take my cue for what to play from your moves. Some kind of genius there! If only someone had video'd it.
Years later, Rollins heard something on the radio, liked the sax playing, and wondered who it was. Eventually he discovered it was him, on one of those Rolling Stones songs!
Thanks for share this. I didn´t know about it.
That's great!
Thanks for Sharing simply Incredible! Last Epic Song from the Stones! The year before, Foreigner required the services of Sax Man Junior Walker on Urgent, Both Solo are heartwarming & iconic today

This album came out when I was 18 in 1981. Played the hell out it. This song is definitely my favourite! It’s so great to read everyone’s comments and it’s amazing how we don’t know each other but can feel connected in such a positive way. Life can be tough. Then randomly hear this song and all the bad stuff fades away and it’s like…yeh, life is good 🎶
I was 15 when it came out, loved this album. Didn’t see the video until many years later. Anyway, I appreciate this song so much more now that I’m 56 as opposed to 15, lol!

The Stones were never better. The beautiful sax (Sonny Rollins) that weaves its way through this "ode to joy" is pure magic.
Sonny Rollins, legendary jazz saxophonist... One of the all-time greats. The Stones had initially recorded the backing music with Mick Taylor on guitar back in 1972 when they made "Goats Head Soup". But it never made it onto that album and it was left unfinished without the sax or any of the words. The recording was revived 7 years later while the Stones were making "Tattoo You". They needed a sax player for this and two other songs and so Mick gave Sonny a call. (I love his confidence. "Yeah, we'll just hire a living legend to play on our album..." Haha!!) Sonny Rollins was going to turn down the gig because had a typical snobby jazz elitist attitude towards rock and wasn't much of a Stones fan. From the little he'd heard of their music, he thought they were "highly-derivative" of American blues. But his manager/wife wouldn't hear of it. She told him, "No, you MUST do it.." They had some problems nailing the part. They weren't on the same page. Eventually Sonny told Mick, "Look, you just stand right here next to me, tell me exactly where you want me to play and DANCE the part out"... Which Mick did!! Thank God it all worked out in the end.. It took a while, but is pure magic... One of their best.
The great Sonny Rollins on the sax!
When comparing all the other performances of this song , covers and by the stones themselves, nothing comes close to this recording with sax and the main guitar riff, i never get sick of hearing the flowing compositions, cheers now.
@@carlmarks8170 What a great post. I wouldn't have got this much info from Google. I'm a rock guy and I know about the Snobby attitude and all that. But all of us Rock Guys love these so called living legends because we adore their music. I love this post and Sonny Rollins wife for pushing him into doing it. What a great sound Sonny produced with one note that sounds like a sound wave itself. That's what these guys get paid for and they know it. May the Cosmos spin your way for all.
One of those bridge songs between the '70s and the '80s. It had mainly a '70s feel to it but hinting of the '80s and what was to come. The true "80s" sound though ended early, in '87. After that it was pretty much all downhill, with few exceptions.

+Robert Dunkes SR It's the other way around, mostly.
+Robert Dunkes SR No he doesn't actually. Mick writes most of the lyrics and Keith writes the music. There's a few exceptions like Happy, Thru & Thru and he contributes to some of the lyrics but Mick is the one that wrote this as far as I know.
I don't think Mick gets enough credit for his writing. He's easily one of the best lyricists in rock n' roll history. From 64-82, he kept a ridiculously high standard of writing songs. Arguably the longest time period of quality music from any band ever.

The good old jukebox
I happened to pass by a record store in downtown Buenos Aires in '83 and they were playing this Stones' song that I hadn't heard before...I stopped to listen to it and liked it so much that I walked into the store and bought the Stones' album that included "Waiting on a friend". So much heart and soul in this song. I remember when it came out I was already into newer music. But this song just pierced me straightaway. The depth of their personal history, the sax breaks, New York in 1980. Genuinely relaxed in their skin, loving each other. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, when your friend knows how to lift you up and make you smile. Sometimes, that’s all that really matters.

It's never too late friend.
This was the very first music video I ever saw - the summer of 1981 just before MTV started, between my freshman and sophomore high school year - it was played by a news program. It was an absolute bombshell to my soul, to see this music video, before I really even understood the concept. It was like "what in the world is this!? a video made for the song? Are they acting the lyrics? Is this a mini movie?" Everyone was like me, confused, amazed, and completely transfixed. Every time I hear this song or see this video, I'm reminded of this OG of the revolution of music video, which was a huge part of my high school life.

Too funny! My town was nearly if not the last in the nation to get MTV. Went to visit friends in college, rushed to turn on MTV. This came on, first video I ever saw on there. I used to wait for my friends when I was younger but there are fewer friends to wait for now . Rest In Peace to them all of them but now there waiting for me in heaven .
Sonny Rollins's solos send this song into the stratosphere.
Shining brilliant saxophone track
Did you read Mick's quote about this on the songs Wikipedia page?
Yes!!!! Thank you … I love this song and it was Sonny Rollins soloing that completes the perfect vibe.. also … that’s Peter Tosh on the stoop sitting with Mick and Keith
As A Black kid 👦🏿 growing up in the early 70’s and 80’s - This group was amazing because they had no boundaries and the music was beyond Excellent- also I could imitate Mick jagger to a T and Billy idol... Awww the music 🎶 back then was so euphoric to me mentally
❤️
Great music shall always reach the fans it is meant to reach
Same her Woody.
Wow I'd love to see you be Mick. He's been my idol at 13 yrs old. 👅👅👅👅💨💨💨💨💨

Mick shagged guys too, not only pretty ladies, fyi lol
The greatest rock and roll band. Period
C C Yeah, you would be the one to bring that up
Sounds like a fun life!
I wish the devil valued my soul as much, think I would be more than tempted! Lol
Another iconic St. Marks Place moment/image captured.... like the cover of Physical Graffiti ....
Rolling Stones are still the greatest rock’n’roll group in the world!
Indeed, SMOOTH, AND DIRECT,EASY LISTENING.

No argument here.
Soo true 😘
The opening guitar lead is amazing. Sets the grammatical structure for the entire beat via the blues "call and answer" symbiosis. The bass follows, like a pack mule smoothly staying in time with the riders in front. The sax... it's like a siren, the sea faring kind, beckoning the listener to look for the shore, through the fog. Mick's lyrics is the lighthouse, beaming rays of hope and belonging, telling you that even if you have to wait, at least you can wait on a friend. Keep going, it's worth it. (Exits humming the yeah yeah outro.)
You are a poet. Beautiful, succinct picture you painted.
Love this song and video! Gotta love Mick Jagger! What a unique performer he has always been..nobody else like him!
the King of Classic Rock

The greatest rock band of all time doing a cool video from 1981. How laid back is Keith in this? I defy anyone to watch this and not sit with a smile on their face. Saw them in London in May 2018, and they seem to be enjoying playing together more than ever. Maybe it's because they know it can't last much longer. Thanks for all the great times and music fellas.
WOW u just explained why I sometimes feel melancholy or sad when I listen to these great old bands..? IT CAN'T LAST MUCH LONGER....
I don't know why, but this song always put a smile on my face. No matter what life is throwing at me.
F u it will last 4 ever
texasbell f u it will last 4 ever
michael peuler same with me
The older I get, the better this song sounds. Thanks Stones!
One of the best songs they’ve ever done.
Yup. Wild horses too
DJL0455 so many to choose from.
It blows my mind. I heard Sonny Rollins really didn't want to do the Sax solo at first. They cut the record and Sonny forget about it. Some time elapsed and Sonny finally heard the recording and he loved it!
How in the world could there be any thumbs down? This song is one the greatest songs ever. These guys are the best rock band ever. By the way, I’m 70 years young.
Defo one of a kind from an old soul to you.
couldn't agree with you more. I'm 70 also.
Got that right dude. I’m 61 today. I was 21 when I saw this albums tour in ‘81. So many great memories listening to the Stones.
Does anyone, I mean anyone rock more than a Rolling Stone?
I'm 59 and I totally agree.
Keith just swaggers down the sidewalk. So fucking cool. Love this song.
Possibly one of the Greatest Songs Ever Recorded!!!,,,who isn't just waiting on a friend?
Possibly?
I've been waiting on a friend for a long time. Maybe one will show up before I die.
@@fivestring65ify Hang in there, Jimmy. It can change in a minute.
Michael Gomez amigo para sempre
This is a beautiful piece of the 70s look at his face in the beginning
This song came out in the early 80s.
Definitely their most beautiful song.

Keith and Mick, seems like these best friends go back a hundred years. The Stones produced some of the best MUSICIANS to come from any band really. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of GREAT bands; the STONES just happen to be one of the best.
The best

Thank you for your love and support🙏❤️
One of the greatest friendships in the history of man.
Never was a Stones fan. But I’ve now lived across the street for almost 20 years and now I like this song and a few others. Oh, the neighborhood is a little different but there are always movies and things being filmed. Jason Bateman was directing something out front last week.
Man, wouldn't it be awesome if my generation had a band like The Rolling Stones? I'm talking about a group that brings that same level of passion, authenticity, and rock 'n' roll swagger. Just like how The Stones made their mark on history, it's time for a new band to step up and create music that becomes the anthem of our times. To anyone reading this, I would recommend looking up a band called The Doublejumps. To me, they are the best hope for the new generation of music.
Metallica isn’t mainstream but they sell out 60,000 seat stadiums every night and have an intense live show. Of course, they aren’t culturally significant like the Stones but who does?
True but Metallica aren't exactly a new band are they lol @@themetalhead1463
Have you heard of Greta Van Fleet? A bit more like zeppelin but reviving rock n roll nonetheless
@@jeanlucdecoster Yes -their new album is really good. They are really growing as a band...
The Rolling Stones are my “go to band”. Need a little break from life , listen to the Stones. This specific song is so smooth.
I’m almost 65. Lately, they’re my favourite band again. I’m listening to them every day!
Really dug. Exile on Maim Street, Beggars Banquet. All classy. alboms by the man himself, Mick Jagger.
I hear you. This song reminds me to stop and enjoy those close to you; life is not ALL about making money. Love Keith's guitar on this one.

"smile relieves a heart that grieves" is a great line...
Philip Halpenny I used those words to help a friend in his hour of need. It was a funeral, and I’d just been through one for my own dad. I found the most comforting thing was glancing over my shoulder in the crematorium to see all my uncles and aunts, cousins, family friends... and they all seemed to be holding out their hands, offering support.
In my hour of need that is what I needed the most, that unconditional emotional support. And to see my aunt Jose and Christine smile, even though they were in the same strife as I was.
Words do that I suppose, just simple words. I put my arm around my mate and just said “lean on me”... I know it sounds corny.
In situations like that, corny does it.
@@petewilliams7809 Sorry about your loss. Pete. A simple gesture of solidarity can make a real difference when going through the cold shower of grief, so nothing corny about that. I remember a sad story about how Def Leppard's guitarist Phil Collen was struggling to process the death of his bandmate, Steve Clark at only 30. Many months later, his numbness finally gave way, when he was driving & Waiting For A Friend came on the car radio. He simply pulled over on the hard shoulder, to sob his heart out. Then he healing process could begin...
