      It's my first video of his, but it annoyed me in the beginning that he says it's not pixel density on the screen but pixel per degree, and then says compares it to screens or phones, without telling us whether it actually has more or less pixels per degree than other headsets. Literally the only piece of information that would have been useful there

    Counterpoint to the weird battery voltage justification, from an electronics engineer: the 15V USB-C step could've achieved everything Apple wanted in terms of power delivery, with very little VRM modification. When you have hardware development control like they do, accepting 45W instead of 40W is essentially turning a dial.

    • @OuchMyFaceyHole

      I was wondering the same thing when he showed the USB-C standard voltages. 13 vs 15 is nothing. I don't get why that wasn't mentioned. Then they could have just made it thunderbolt compatible through the same port and now it has vastly more capability.

    • @mypdf

      USB-C still doesn't lock, so it isn't an option for this use case anyway.

    • @jacksontint
      @jacksontint 2 місяці тому +35

      I wonder if the microOLED displays or some other hardware component on the headset use 13V natively so it would allow them to reduce the total number of power rails and vrms they need on the headset itself. maybe not but thats the only reason I can think of that they would use a really uncommon voltage like that. if they used 15V then they would have to also generate the 13V onboard which would be additional components and power drain.

    • @jm-alan
      @jm-alan 2 місяці тому +24

      @@mypdf I frequently knock my phone off my desk and catch it by the USB-C wire; I think it could have had the same locking connector on the headset side, but had USB-C on the battery side, to allow the headset to be powered by other sources.

    • @jm-alan
      @jm-alan 2 місяці тому +31

      @@jacksontintYou're completely correct.
      I just don't personally believe there's sufficient amperage or efficiency to run a 13V output directly to 13V native input; it's more likely that they're already stepping it down into a bunch of smaller voltages and just using 13V because it matched their efficiency targets.
      I suspect they were planning to develop this proprietary connector from day 1.

    While I haven't tried the Vision Pro myself, keep in mind that the effective brightness on VR Headsets is afaik basically always way lower than what the displays are quoted for, not just because of the optics but through heavy black frame insertion too, to minimize motion blur. I would expect the Pro to be well below 1000 nits because without any incoming light from the outside, that would be way too bright for comfort anyways.

      @@peterscott2662 Your point about pancakes is true and I have read some reports by now that persistence on the Vision Pro might be too high (similar to the PSVR2) leading to motion blur. I'm fairly certain that they do not avoid BFI completely though, as that would most likely lead to motion sickness inducing levels of blur (or generally a bad experience when moving your head) and that doesn't seem to be the case either.

    • @adonisds
      @adonisds 2 місяці тому

      That's correct. The optics alone transmit only about 10%-15% of the light.
      BFI is always used in every VR headset because without it massive motion blur would be experienced. For really good motion performance, the screen should be on about 10% of the time. People have been saying that there's much more blur with movement in vision pro than in other headsets, sot the screen is probably on much more than 10% of the time.

      Yeah it does have the capability for a thunderbolt link, but it is split into multiple lanes. The only lane exposed is USB 2 at the moment. Source: 9to5Mac

      @@hypernova7 that source article is hilarious thanks for pointing me to it! "Since it’s Thunderbolt, it means potentially connecting to external displays via DisplayPort, connecting any sort of USB-enabled device, etc. This could bring forth much faster hard-wired Ethernet, high-quality video feeds, external monitors, external drives for direct media access, and more."

    Not surprised the speakers and passthrough aren't as great as many reviewers have said considering some of these reviewers will shamelessly say that Raycons sound amazing in a ad read.

    Brilliant video, best one I've seen yet on the device. The technical explanations are fantastic and generally what I look for in a review, not just reading off a spec sheet or benchmarks but actually deep diving into the things the average reviewer barely knows.

      Everyone is biased in some way towards things they are buying, especially when they have spent 3.5k on it. They had to make the decision to want to get it when it's that expensive so of course they will biased towards it. The people who are biased against it flat out won't buy it so they can't actually talk about how it is to use day to day.

    The thing I love about you is that you really *do* talk about the unspoken, fascinating, important aspects of tech products that no one else does. Usually a title like that is clickbait, and it never is with you. No one comes close to the level of thoughtfulness and detail you dig into. The thing I don’t like as much is that you are *so* intelligent and know so many details that I lose you along the way all the time, even as someone who is above-average tech literate. Like how you tried to quickly explain how batteries work with all the different units & how they work together - I’m still completely lost.
