I remebered the days pre flip out screen. 1/2 of my videos were out of focus. Great tips and ideas in this video.
I’ve used the Panasonic and Canon app for monitoring. An iPad is a great wireless solution as well. It’s like a HUGE field monitor. It comes in clutch when autofocus isn’t cooperating. Just tap and keep shooting.
does the app allow external recording to the phone?
@@boarderboi6 No, it’s a wireless connection so you wouldn’t be able to get anything with a quality image recording to the phone in real-time anyway.

Canon 70d doesn't allow recording while wifi is on. What other way can we do it using the phone?
Just starting using my phone as a monitor and love it. I the DSLR controllor app on an LG G5, I can autofocus and adjust exposure while in front of the camera, which makes life much easier.

There are two more options.
OTG transfer over cable. A bit faster than WIFI and faster to connect. Androids have a free app for it.
And then there are old monitors. You cant change the settings but can basically connect any HDMI monitor or a tv that is just lying around to your camera as long as it has the output and most do.
Some cameras have those rca or hdmi outputs. You can plug them to those cheap car, or security cameras screen lcds. They are not great for color, but to at least you know if you're in the right place for shooting!

Being new to UA-cam I feel that is very important to see myself filming. This is the best advice. I appreciate it very much! I watch all your videos and have learned so much. Thanks for another great video, Sean! I'm just starting out on my UA-cam Journey. Sadly, even though I use the latest model Nikons (D5, D850, D500) the Nikon Snapbridge app, still doesn't support live view in video mode and you can't even start/stop recording. Not to mention that none of Nikon's DSLRs have flip screens. I've heard of a few independent apps that allow you to connect a smarthpone via an OTG cable. I know you're not a Nikon guy. But I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, or better yet, see you do a video on it! Keep up the great work...
Hey man! Hope you have got a solution! Otherwise you can use, wireless mobile utility, wmu , by nikon, that connects with phone with wifi and nfc!

Canon Camera connect APP has a usb connection? Wifi is very slow tô connect
Good info... I'm an Actor and often must send in Video Auditions... this seems a great way to do this. I've just been using my i phone in the past but this should give a much more "finished" result... I'll probably try to figure out how to connect a lavalier mic as well to try to get rid of room boom... Thanks, again...

I use the Canon app for my 70D but unfortunately the 70D does not allow to record video and turn on WIFI at the same time :(

be careful man don´t think it´s too easy unfortunately... THe sony app is actually terrible and won´t let you use any picture profiles and a lot of other settings while in remote control.
I still prefer my Sony A6500 over my GH4 tho and I have used a lot of cameras including the big Sony´s, Ursa Mini, RED, etc. (:
Panasonic has an awesome app. I've just started using it for my G7. Even though the flip out screen gives me great control right on the screen. I do like to shoot my videos from a few feet away. The app is really terrific for that.
These videos are really so helpful for people who are trying to start a channel!
This really helped because I knew Canon had wifi technology and all that but I didn't know it was to this much detail and extent. If you want a story, well I have a Canon G7X mark 1 and I was taking photos for a project, realized I forgot my Macbook's adapters so there was no port for my SD card but the photos were due in 30 minutes so I transferred the photos using the wifi app.
I started vlogging with a Leica T...but no flip out screen sucked. I had an iPhone mounted to the camera connected to the app to monitor myself....but eventually I “downgraded” to a Sony RX100 III.
For run and gun vlogging, setting up a monitor before hitting record is a big hassle! If I were making films or in a studio doing reviews or unboxings, the app route would make so much sense!
For Canon, is there any way to view what your recording? Or is the preview on the phone only for picture taking?

There are lots of DIY you can do but the first things you have is smartphone, laptop, camera/dlsr, HDMI cable and OTG cable(for those who don't have a Wireless Connection camera itself.) Second step is If the camera/DSLR don't have WiFi as I said before, you can download the app named, qdslrdashboard(cost 4-5 dollars I think) but don't worry, still you can find alternative of it. After you downloaded the App, make sure you have an OTG cable and HDMI cable for HDMI input of the camera/dslr to connect between the two in your smartphone, it will automatically open the app and ready to go as you ready to shoot. The laptop thing in the video, that's it. Thank you and I wish this information will help you somehow.

But Negative points are you can't see yourself if it is focusing or not and you cant't put microphone of top of it.
I use a phone app on android along with a mini HDMI to large HDMI cable to a USB to phone and I can then mount that on my camera's hot shoe mount or have it hand held next to me for filming

Thanks for this info, I am a newbie and some years back I bought a Nikon D3200 for our daughter to take pics at events. I am learning photography now and had been using a 7" battery powered TV as the monitor. I thought that would be great to be able to use a old Note 5 I had laying around the house and found your video. I can't wait to hook this up! :)

I purchased my Cannon EOS Rebel SL1 camera approximately 5 or 6 yrs ago and only used it a couple of times. It seemed so complicated, due to only using disposable, instant Polaroid, my Cell phone ( different ones over the years) and other small cameras that came with film you had to buy, put inside then take to the photo shop to have developed and the like, the most Technical camera I had ever used was the ones on my phone or Web cams that you hooked up to your PC but not to take video's. I have been extremely busy but been wanting to start a UA-cam channel for over the past 4 yrs or so but haven't done so yet. What am I waiting for, always time and $$$ for the right equipment.
Well I have this Camera and I am now forcing myself to learn how to use it. I have had family, hubby and couple others, that said they would teach me but ..... shall we leave it there...LMAOOOOO

Excellent tips and a big help to determine essential gear right off the bat. I can't help it but the entire video I'm staring at the GorillaPod and how close it's sitting to the edge of the table and thinking "No...no...no...don't hit it with your hand..." lol. I have a Sony A6500 but I can't stand the PlayMemories app. I wish they'd update it. Or maybe it's just me.

Lashanda yes I have used the app and I always use the EOS Utility on my PC and then it opens Canon Digital Photo Pro, which is amazing (HDR tool).

Well the Fuji app still doesn't allow for recording above 720p...
I would love a video for us mobile phone recorder, there's Wondershare Go, but that can be used on laptop only, i would love to control my smartphone camera with another phone.
I wish my Samsung NX300 worked with the remote viewfinder app for it, but it doesn't work with manual lenses.

I did try it, but I must say that the focus and image quality is pretty bad on my laptop :/ (plus it takes a computer and lots of place). It works for now, but I'll still be looking for a cheap dedicated monitor.

I can improve the camera settings in "regular" mode but i cant see the screen when I record.

unless it's been changed my issue with the playmemories app is that you have to be connected to Wi-Fi with the camera and your phone. there are apps that allow you to mirror your camera screen using your phone if you have an OTG cable. I have yet to get one to work with my a7s
