I have a question, which one would be better for "Depth of Field" the 1. Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens OR 2. Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens? Please, I really need help with that. I want to buy the best one for my youtube videos. Thanks for your time! Have a great day. 😀
What I need is studio lighting.
Dude, totally confusing. What I needed was, "do this", "set this thing to here", then go into this setting and choose this". Maybe you can do another video that is easier to follow and more to the point.
Hi Sean, I'm thinking of ordering the canon m6 mark ii to start my UA-cam Channel. It comes with 'EF-M 15-45 mm' lens. Will this give me shallow depth of field like you have going on in this video?
How to background blurry panasonic hc . Pv 100 .plz
To summarize for anyone that's still is a little confused:
The shallower the depth of field is the blurrier the background will be.
The wider the aperture= a narrower depth of focus which = a blurred background
Three main factors that will affect how you control the depth of field of your images are: aperture (f-stop), distance from the subject to the camera, and focal length of the lens on your camera.
The closer your subject is to the camera, the shallower your depth of field becomes(aka more blurry background). This also means that a longer lens=a more blurry background, Therefore, moving further away from your subject will deepen your depth of field(aka background and you are in focus).
The Greater the distance between the subject and the background the more blurry it will be.
If you are a beginner with a DSLR there are some simple ways you can control depth of field and still use and automatic shooting mode. By choosing Aperture Priority mode you can set your aperture to get the depth of field that you want, and the camera will automatically set the shutter speed.
Aperture refers to the access given to light from the lens to the camera sensors. The size of your aperture (the diameter of the hole through which light enters the camera) controls the amount of light entering your lens. Using the aperture (f-stop) of your lens is the simplest way to control your depth of field as you set up your shot.
Large aperture = Small f-number = Shallow (small) depth of field
Small aperture = Larger f-number = Deeper (larger) depth of field
It may be easier to remember this simple concept: The lower your f-number, the smaller your depth of field(more blurry background). Likewise, the higher your f-number, the larger your depth of field(less blurry background). For example, using a setting of f/2.8 will produce a very shallow depth of field while f/11 will produce a deeper DoF.
Hopefully this helps some people out :)
Super helpful for a video neophyte like me!
Thank you! This helps!
Brilliantly explained
This explanation is better the vlog above am having cannon c300 am learning
Thank you so much!
"I'm not going to explain the science behind it because, I don't know that-!" 😂😂😂😂😂 Great video by the way!🤘🏻
:-)
Lower the aperture = higher the light enters which allows higher shutter speed and lower ISO means the object comes into focus and the object in distance blurred because of low light from them due to high shutter speed and low ISO, due to which blurred effect occurs. i hope m right
I think you had the science down perfectly! :)
Sean Keeps it 💯% real
I loved that bit too. I definitely didn’t need the science behind it 😂
What you're really advocating here is not just "depth of field," but "SHALLOW" depth of field. Thanks for your video! It was helpful.
I use the "nifty 50" lens you showed in all my vids. My background is only slightly blurry because my room is small but it still helps and looks more polished than the kit lens. I'm about 6 feet from the lens and about 8 feet from the back corner of the shot. Thanks for all the coaching, Sean.
What about for vlogging, example itsjusta6 videos
@@sunsetpaths2972 I am brand new at using a DLSR. I had no idea you had to be that far away and have that much distance for the background to do this effectively. It's crazy because I can take photos all day long with much smaller distances. Back to the drawing board for me! Great video tutorials btw.
As a complete noob with everything cameras, lighting etc your videos are a huge help! Thanks for creating them!
great tip sean! can't believe this video is over 5 years old! It's helping me so much in present day today 2021! I finally punched fear in the face and pressed record, now I'm here for the tips! thanks man!
A cool thing people may want to try with their videos if you hang some lights maybe Christmas lights in the background it'll look pretty cool with the DOF/Blurry background.
Kool Creation Photo true dat!
I love that look and wanna try it!
Kool.Creation so true!
Yeah!
true
Your tutorials are among the very best available. Thank you for focussing on the theory and principle and giving just a little "here's what button to push" to make it come together. You treat the audience as smart, and it's really great.
For $125, the Canon 50mm 1.8 is hard to beat. I usually use that lens for my green screen shots because it blurs out any imperfections in the green screen. Great video, Sean.
Excellent point! I just bought the Canon Rebel T7i, my first ever DSLR, specifically for blurred backgrounds and green screen! We’ll see how it goes...
Love it! Another great video Sean 👍 Congrats on 100k #killingit
1.64 mil now 💯
How is this channel not at 1M yet?!
Nice Sean. You are always so helpful. You have helped me be successful on my own channel. I thank you.
I just got my DSLR and I LOVE this channel. And I keep seeing your ad on facebook which makes me happy because my wife and I LOVE Chalene!!! :)
Who's watching this in 2020? Great video!
Who knew it was this easy! Thanks for the video.
You are very honest in your teaching
I am definitely not a trained camera or film guy so this was very helpful on giving pointers to get a better shot! Thanks!!!
Think media your information is the best information from Pakistan. Thanks for good information.
Really like your vids bro. Keep them coming
Just purchased a nifty fifty. Cant wait to try this on our next video. Thanks Sean
Oh man thank you for breaking this down, simple and to the point. I finally understand.
I use the cc lens effect in fcpx i put the top setting bar in cc lens effect to about 1.5 to 3 and the other 2 bottom bars to 0 and it blurs out the background for me
Hey can u make tutorial? I watched your channel but there is not video about this topic
Best Mini Tripods for DSLRs... I'm waiting for it Sean!
Love the video idea - added to the list!
Manfrotto mini tripods are good

I did as well!!
Heather Torres aahh
i;m a new youtuber.. and i just want to say ... i love your videos ! they are extremely helpful...
I have learned so much watching your videos. Thanks Sean. God bless.
Great little beginner tutorial man!
Be aware though, that the tip for kit lenses are a bit sketchy as most kit lenses are f 3.5-5.6. So the more you Zoom the more DOF you'll get... And the darker the image :oP
Also, I'm not sure you are correct about being further away from the camera. Usually the closer you are with still images, the easier to get shallow DOF/Bokeh. That's my experience at least.
Another little suggestion: Maybe remember to explain/mention(depending on how in-depth you want to go in different videos) how a 50mm is actually 75(non Canon) or 80mm(Canon) for most people, as very few of us have full frame bodies to shoot on. I think it's actually pretty relevant to this video. Also remember that it's not only the focal length that you have to multiply by 1.5/1.6 - It's also the aperture - So: On a FF body, you don't need as small an aperture to get the same effect :o)
I had a suggestion for a video, but totally forgot what it was while writing this, so maybe I'll suggest that at some other time :oP
I like this one very much and keep going back to it. Thanks.
Love it! Another great video Sean
i use the 24mm f2.8, and i'm satisfied with the effect the lens provides:)
Thanks a million, Sean...informative and helpful. Right on target...keep the cameras rolling.

THiNK Media TV Thanks!
so helpful! love your videos! thanks!
thank you for the how to video on this subject, I have been wondering how to do this with my Canon AE-1
Thank you so much for the variance of choices. I watched a video last night that ONLY talked about the Sigma 30 mm f1.4 art lens at a whopping $400. I know lenses are expensive but I thought there had to be more than one way. I'm newer to DSLR cameras, I only used to use camcorders so I'm learning just where the $$$ lies with these... in the LENSES!!! lol, thank you so much! You are awesome!
I really love all u videos. I been learning. I subscribe already.
Awesome video! Thanks! 👍
This is super helpful! Thank you very much for this video!

Very helpful!!!!! Thank you
Great video, you explain everything clearly.
Awesome explanation and easy to follow! Thanks man!
This is an elemental question but how do you make sure you are in focus? If you're positioning the camera several feet away, what is your process for focusing on the subject?
I would use autofocus, if its a newer camera.
If it's an older one with a slow focus or terrible refocus capability (like mine ahahah) use the timer funcion (at 10s), put the focus on automatic, press capture, sit down and wait until it captures. When it has, go back to your camera, which should now be focused and disable automatic focus (either on the lens or in the configs). Then just start recording and youre done.
If the automatic timer on your camera DONT focus just before capture, do it manually. Have a second person sit down while you focus the camera on her and then disable autofocus.
If you dont have a second person, start recording and go back and forth until your face is perfectly focused. This is tedious, but should work. To facilitate a bit, hook it up to a HDMI TV or Monitor, so you can sit down and see if its focused properly.
This taught me a lot. Thanks!
Tamron G2 series, the 45mm 1.8 and the 15-30 are killing Sigma Art. Vibration Control is amazing.
been looking for this for ages! Thank you so much :D
Your welcome!
THiNK Media TV :)
Just wanted to thank you for doing AWESOME full of content videos :)
I’m curious if my new Sony cybershot Dsc Hx80 can do it... if I get an additional mic?
Love your channel. Thanks.
Also Filmic pro is an app that allows you to get depth of field in the settings on an iPhone or iPad. Just have to use lots of light to compensate for the lower filming quality but it still works great if you don't have a Canon and want to get started. I've watched a ton of short films on youtube using them. They just added a ton of lighting..
the 50mm is a great lens, but on the cropped sensor of the 70d I prefer to use the 24mm because i use a shotgun mic.
Thank you, this video was really helpful! :)
Always great information 😍
Thank you so much for this! Can't wait to make my videos even better now :D
Thank you for your contribution to us... How can I get the blurred effect using iPhone 6 Plus?
Just got the nifty fifty for my canon 200d. Love the depth of field look! For once i can produce something that looks somewhat professional lol
Thanks for your tips and tricks
You're welcome!
Which is more important aperture or mm for blur effect?
You give a lot of great tips out on your channel! For now I can only film with my phone( I have a way older Canon DSLR that doesn't do video) BUT these can still be applied to photography and manual mode on my cell phone. Thank you very much ^_^
Nice video. Thank you for sharing it. One question... would it be possible to use some edit tools to make existing video background blur?
i got the canon ef 50mm f1.8.. im satisfied..
I still find it difficult to understand. I just bought my first camera and all these things you are saying is really new to me
This really helped I subscribed and left a like and turned on push notifications
So helpful. Thank you
Thanks for this, Sean! Spot on and exactly what I needed. Appreciate it!
I'm a new subscriber and your tips are super useful for this new DSLR owner :) Thank you!
Sean, thanks for this video. Very informative. Near the end when you talk about the G7X Mk II you correctly point out the fact that there's now external mic input. Would it have been worth mentioning that a good workaround (my opinion) would be an alternative audio recording method? An example of which would be you iPhone with an lavalier mic or a voice recorder (like a Zoom H2) with a lavalier. In fact, I always use a backup recording method just in case the camera audio messes up.
great vid man! Congrats on 100k plus subs!
Thank you! :-)
I have a canon 50 mm 1.8 as well as a sigma 70-200 f 2.8 Macro lens and I can’t get the damn lens to focus while taking VIDEO , I plan on putting your tips to use . Thanks for sharing this very informative video 💕
Could you do a video like this using a phone or which types of phone will be able to blur the video background.
Thank you for always being so helpful!
This is very useful!
Brilliant! This helped me so much. Very informative, Thanks so much. ☺
