The cab is quite rotten, but the sheet metal parts are all well available, order in Germany. Cabs become really rare so it might be usefull to restore it. I would first fix up the other 421, and then take a closer look to this😉 Keep up the video's, really like them👍

Hi mate. I would remove the injection pump (you may struggle though), give it a good clean up, replace the oil and put it back in. Mind the timing. I would also remove the injectors as well as they migh have the same stickness disease as the injection pump. Cheers, Raz

Btw, for someone who knows something about this I have to say you edit away all superflous stuff and only shows what is needed and nothing more. Mabye for folks who dont know teir way around might be wondering at times but I really like it! No long bits of tenuos wrenchin and butt scratching here at all. Just enough to get what is happening. That pump is dead. It will never work without a set of plungers and barrels, and that's expensive specialist work. It's not worth it in any case. I have a spare OM616 pump laying around that you can have if you pay shipping from Norway. @@KJOff-Road
Spin the engine over put diesel fuel in a spray bottle or a Windex container and squirt it into the intake you may have to put a shot of ether to get it start but by just shooting fuel into the intake like that it should be atomized enough to start and run the vehicle for a little while that way you don't have to worry about the pump because you know either it needs to be rebuilt or at least cleaned out and this will tell you if the engine knocks or make goofy noises that you don't want to mess with. Hello, it seems like a descend find. Lucky you! I want one like that too as a supplement to mine. The cab is not too good, but worse ones have been rebuild. It may not be cheap but you can get every part. Furthermore, although it's rotten, i really dig the high pipe, it's cool but it isn't overdone like many of the chrome pipes you see on those small mogs. So for other things you mentioned: As for tilting the cab: the screws you showed on the front cross member aren't really part of the recommended way to tilt the cab. You can only losen the two nuts left and right of the rubber front mount. The cab has just two brackets with slots there and can slide upwards freely and out of the joint. It also so seems to have the stronger G gearbox and the additional slow and super slow gears if i spotted that right? It also seemed as it has the double/heavy springs in the back. And as far as i know the hydraulic cylinders were an option too, so it maybe even never had one in the first place. I would be surprised if that Unimog was actually build in the 70's. In 68-69 the bend windows in the back corners of the cab became standard. You could opt to not have them, but i guess it's rare. So it maybe stood a bit before it got registered the first time. Another argument that supports the theory of the Unimog being older is the lack of the proper Hazard switch in the proper place. Maybe it's just another switch, but I can't see that from here. I don't know if they ever became standard, but in Germany the became mandatory in the early 70's, so I think they also came standard for at least the Unimogs destined to Germany. And i really envy you about the front PTO. I don't need one, but if you ever want to get rid of one. Or generally need help with research on German sides, etc, I can probably help you. I also got the workshop Manuals. Maybe you could do something else with this Unimog? Maybe make the other one your work tool and this one more of a fun Mog. If the Injection Pump is junk anyway, maybe just get one from a car with a Om615. It wound be RPM regulated, but enable the engine to rev higher and make more power, so it would be more of a driving machine. When that's the case you also would have to adjust the pulley ratio for the air compressor or just replace it with an electric one. With that being said, there where versions where the engine reved to 3500RPM, but the gearbox can take more. Maybe if the engine is complete junk you can put another one in there. A Om 616 also came stock later on - with the other injection pump the Mogs gonna be fast then. Some people even turboed to OM 616 or put in a five cylinder engine. Additionally if the cabs rotten through maybe chop off the roof and part of the rear to make it a convertible. The early 406 convertibles were basically exactly that. The other convertibles with the straight windshield came later on for the 406/421. There were also versions for the army that had to benches facing each other mounted sideways on the bed. That would also go handy with the driving machine/fun mog. Maybe even put a bbq there? Who knows there are so many possibilities. Greetings Humbucker 007
Yes, you are right about the front mont, i know you won't need to take out the bottom bolts to tilt it, i was just thinking of when you would lift the entire cab off, then it is easier to take the whole mount. :) but yes, i don't think i said it in the video, but it dose look like they have tilted it, without loosening the two nuts, on the sides of the bushing. because the bushing is completely torn apart. And yes, you are right, it dose have the G gearbox. and double rear springs too :) And i think you could be right. it could very well be older than what the paperwork says. I was thinking of trying what you told me on the other video, and contact the Unimog Museum, and give them the VIN numbers of all my mog's to see if i could all the correct infor on them :) Also, thank you for all the info, and the tips on the different pump options. Two!! Although the Canadian Military did use some, they are as rare as dinosaur spit here. I suspect the salt on our winter roads consumed many, right along with every other vintage vehicle. There are companies that will import vintage Unimogs, Volvo C303's, Pinzgauers, etc. but the price is prohibitive for most people. All that to say congratulations, I'm terribly envious!

Interesting to see what the inside of one of these looks like. I had seen one of these set up as a "Hi Rail". A millionaire who was underwriting much of the start up for a transportation museum I was volunteering at, used one of these to move his personal palace railroad car from place to place.
My vote: get it running so you can properly assess what you've got. Chop the cab to remove the pump and if you rebuild the machine, fabricate a removable section to correct the original design fault. I'm not one for originality if by restoring to original you replicate known faults, like no acess to the injector pump. Good vid, thanks for posting
Just keep plugging away at her. I am sure you will get her up and running fairly easy. Pull that pump off and clean it out I bet she fires right up! I wish we had these little trucks here in the USA. I just put a VW tdi engine in a Unimog and it has amazing power and fuel mileage! I highly recommend the swap tho it requires a custom bell housing extension and input shaft adapter to mate it to the unimog transmission.
Just come across your channel! Interesting seeing round the engine bay of a 421, you can see the progress from the 411 to the 421 and up to the 406. (I’ve owned 2, 406 mogs, now have a trac 🤣🤦♂) I think you should do a full rebuild at some point. The 421 seemed to be an overlooked mog, like the westfalia 411and not many here in uk that I know of.
Yeah, i agree. they do seem a bit overlooked. as much as i love the 406 series. i do finder the smaller 421's really fun to drive, and a bit more nimble. :) even though, they are a bit under-powered. haha. Thanks for watching!

Original paperwork? That's worth something. This one has been neglected, but it does have some potential. But I'm going to have to say this UNIMOG is a parts machine.
This truck seems to be best as a parts donor. It certainly could be repaired, but is it worth the effort and cost? The extended body mounts look like they may have been a poor attempt at a body lift to clear larger front tires. The Bosch P- Pumps aren't terribly difficult to disassemble and repair by yourself if you have a clean workspace. You'd need to buy or build a few special tools, but you have the skills to do so. Personally, I think the axles would do well under a Jeep XJ or maybe a Uaz.
Well, the very low price i got it for, certainly helps to keep the overall cost down. So yeah, i might just go have a good look at that pump, the see what can be done :) Thanks for watching!

Honestly, i'd love to see it run but the reasonable thing would be to finish up the other projects first. I did this with a split window kombi and when i finally went to let it go it was worth MUCH more than what i paid for it (i already had a couple of them!). So, take some notes, put it in the corner, organise all its bits nicely and then bring it out when your enthusiastic about it and obviously, in your notes you'll have what its needs, so keep an eye out on a replacement pump for cheap, maybe a replacement cab (although rust is very fixable).
Hard to say. but given the amount of kilometers it has done, they were likely changed a few times. otherwise i think they would have looked even worse.
I'd fix it up, maybe not to exacting or perfect standards-mostly aftermarket. New sheet metal and box tubing where necessary-maybe even a motor swap if that diesel is too tired. There is some rancher or large property owner that'd pay big bucks for a tool/toy like that
As always, another interesting and informative video. My decision would be to restore it to as close as original as possible with less rusty body parts from a donor vehicle.
18:20 You're not getting starter drive because the solenoid isn't being energized, so it's not pulling the pinion into engagement. The mystery is why you had starter engagement on the first try. It didn't look like you had so much juice going that it should have spun out the bendix on inertia. Maybe the last starting attempt was aborted and compression kept the pinion engaged until it stuck in place or something?
It's really cool to see you fail. There are far too many "experts" that get things working every time. You show us that some things need more work and knowing when to stop is equally as important as it can save time later on.
The sensible option would be to break this one up and use it as spares for your other Unimogs. What is the point in being sensible though? - I always end up spending far much more on a project than it is ultimately worth in monetary terms. These kind of projects are all about the journey and the outcome can only be valued by yourself or fellow enthusiasts. I am really enjoying this series, as usual. Thank you
You have too many toys dude! send me one here in the states, we don't have many Unimog's here. 🤣I say go ahead and fix it up, nothing wrong with having to many toys👍
The reason why the bendix did not throw out, was because you bypassed the solenoid. When the electromagnet of the solenoid is energized, not only does it short the battery positive to the starter motor, it also pulls the bendix out to the flywheel. That's the big clunk noise you heard the first time. So your problem is the contacts inside the solenoid for the motor are bad. The reason it worked the first time was because you had energized the S terminal at the start, so the bendix was already stuck out. After rotation of the motor, it went back in. Take the solenoid apart and flip the disk around and clean the 2 lugs and that starter will be fine
I can't really tell you, as i'm on the other side of the planet. But i do buy Unimog things from the US, once in a while. from places like "Vonsmog" and "CouchOffroad" Thanks for watching!
You seem like an experienced mechanic the only thing is with those injectors so I would remove them and make sure none of them are stuck in the wide open position otherwise you're going to get a runaway unless Mercedes-Benz designed them so that would not happen I'm not totally familiar with the inner workings of that model of unimog
On those air tanks pressure relief valves they put on those unimog trucks back then., Because it actually let's out of the moisture. Inside from out of the tanks.witch really does let out more to than the smaller relief valves do to. Those types of water spot facects last A whole lot longer time frame spans to.is the reasons why that people done that to them.& Used them on those unimog trucks as well.
Just get a little gas can and fill it with diesel and just run hoses into it and then the return line into it it's the easiest way if you don't have a gas tank or your tank isn't questionable condition or like you said here most of the fuel system is missing
So thats It!?? There is so much more you can do with that I'm sure you know? They are, very aged architecture which serves you well to managing to get it running. For civilian use you sure want the pump refurbished or as you said replaced. With so many access points open you can clean lubricate and shift the mechanism with comp. air to assist the cleaning. You'll be right about the top metering rail staying closed and probably one finger of the fork is broken from trying to hammer it ope when it was the shutoff rail stuck? Snapped it without knowing I'd say and once it was clear to them just parked it up? It can still be manipulated to function in a way tho! If you're stuck and it's the only way out.
Haha well no, that that not "It" :) I have not given up on it all together. i was just not going to turn it into a several-day project, right now. but im still curious to see if it will run. so i think i will go and have good look at that pump, to see what can be done :) Thanks for watching!
i thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and if i was you and had the know how and patience that you have with these things i would take off that pump and refurbish it myself to the best of your ability and or try and source a second hand working one for as low cost as possible and i wouldn't dis pare too much as you will find cheaper breaks to the build as you go as you did mention the underside and chassis tanks, etc are in good condition and should not cost too much to get this going so spending $$$ where it is most needed would be a good idea and in the end im sure you will get the satisfaction and the return on your investment. I will be following this now that i have came across and i also will subscribe to your channel as i found this most enjoyable thanks 🙂
Hey with prices of trucks these days any investment is a win,,,put WTBUY the parts U need and somebody got a scrap engine and parts lying in their garage...keep it and make it a yard mule with a hoist compressor andtools.
It doesn't sound like the Bendix is engaging after you added the second battery to the equation and by the way is that floor structurally sound enough to hold the weight of this batteries that cab looks like it's a pretty much a rust bucket the other thing you could do is put a Lamborghini Aventador body on top of it you know I have a rock crawler Lamborghini Aventador

The “relay” (top connection) also engages the starter. Hence the loss of drive.

Hope you get the fuel diverter and get it running. Maybe find a donor cab or body for future project
Haven’t seen one of those things for years. Can’t remember what they were for either ! I seem to remember they have a very slow crawl mode.
Unimog body panels are available even in the US. That cab is likely salvageable. I don't know about the cost though.
Oh yeah, it's definitely possible to rebuild that cab. but it will just take an enormus amount of time, and be very expensive
Honestly, i'd love to see it run but the reasonable thing would be to finish up the other projects first. I did this with a split window kombi and when i finally went to let it go it was worth MUCH more than what i paid for it (i already had a couple of them!). So, take some notes, put it in the corner, organise all its bits nicely and then bring it out when your enthusiastic about it and obviously, in your notes you'll have what its needs, so keep an eye out on a replacement pump for cheap, maybe a replacement cab (although rust is very fixable).

Hard to say. but given the amount of kilometers it has done, they were likely changed a few times. otherwise i think they would have looked even worse.

You were thinking on the same realms as I was since the cab is toast go ahead and just cut a piece out of it so you can access the fuel pump rack
hi I have a unimog 421 myself with it also a broken exhaust manifold in the same place apparently happens more often
If you don't have much to loose, rebuild the injector pump on the kitchen table or somewhere else that isn't dusty.
Full nut and bolt restoration , strip the frame sandblast and powder coat
I kind of like it I think it's very interesting I think you should go for it because one reason it would make a beautiful part of our country
I'd fix it up, maybe not to exacting or perfect standards-mostly aftermarket. New sheet metal and box tubing where necessary-maybe even a motor swap if that diesel is too tired. There is some rancher or large property owner that'd pay big bucks for a tool/toy like that
As always, another interesting and informative video. My decision would be to restore it to as close as original as possible with less rusty body parts from a donor vehicle.
Donors are getting very hard to come by. as they all have the same problem. (Rusty cab's)

18:20 You're not getting starter drive because the solenoid isn't being energized, so it's not pulling the pinion into engagement. The mystery is why you had starter engagement on the first try. It didn't look like you had so much juice going that it should have spun out the bendix on inertia. Maybe the last starting attempt was aborted and compression kept the pinion engaged until it stuck in place or something?
The bottom attachment on the hitch was for the previous owner. He was, how do you say, a bundle of twigs.
Scrap the cab and rebuild. Will be good to watch the resto.
It's really cool to see you fail. There are far too many "experts" that get things working every time. You show us that some things need more work and knowing when to stop is equally as important as it can save time later on.
One thing I quickly learned when trying to diy at home was that youtube car diy videos were to be treated purely as entertainment first and foremost.
The sensible option would be to break this one up and use it as spares for your other Unimogs. What is the point in being sensible though? - I always end up spending far much more on a project than it is ultimately worth in monetary terms. These kind of projects are all about the journey and the outcome can only be valued by yourself or fellow enthusiasts.

I know about an old neglected unimog fire truck in Germany…sitting for 25 years outside. It’s a little bigger than yours!
The reason why the bendix did not throw out, was because you bypassed the solenoid. When the electromagnet of the solenoid is energized, not only does it short the battery positive to the starter motor, it also pulls the bendix out to the flywheel. That's the big clunk noise you heard the first time. So your problem is the contacts inside the solenoid for the motor are bad. The reason it worked the first time was because you had energized the S terminal at the start, so the bendix was already stuck out. After rotation of the motor, it went back in. Take the solenoid apart and flip the disk around and clean the 2 lugs and that starter will be fine
You are aboslutely right. in the moment i was just too focused on the starter being slow/under powered. so i didn't even think about that :)

Getting access to pump by cutting body.was smart
You seem like an experienced mechanic the only thing is with those injectors so I would remove them and make sure none of them are stuck in the wide open position otherwise you're going to get a runaway unless Mercedes-Benz designed them so that would not happen I'm not totally familiar with the inner workings of that model of unimog
It would be great to see this classic merc be fully restored back to it original design 🇬🇧🇮🇪.

I would take a die grinder and make an access panel. It’s already rusted, might as well.

On those air tanks pressure relief valves they put on those unimog trucks back then., Because it actually let's out of the moisture. Inside from out of the tanks.witch really does let out more to than the smaller relief valves do to. Those types of water spot facects last A whole lot longer time frame spans to.is the reasons why that people done that to them.& Used them on those unimog trucks as well.
Replace the cab with a VW beetle, fit big tyres, turbo and a cage!

Just get a little gas can and fill it with diesel and just run hoses into it and then the return line into it it's the easiest way if you don't have a gas tank or your tank isn't questionable condition or like you said here most of the fuel system is missing

So thats It!?? There is so much more you can do with that I'm sure you know? They are, very aged architecture which serves you well to managing to get it running. For civilian use you sure want the pump refurbished or as you said replaced. With so many access points open you can clean lubricate and shift the mechanism with comp. air to assist the cleaning. You'll be right about the top metering rail staying closed and probably one finger of the fork is broken from trying to hammer it ope when it was the shutoff rail stuck? Snapped it without knowing I'd say and once it was clear to them just parked it up? It can still be manipulated to function in a way tho! If you're stuck and it's the only way out.

Keep it on the back burner while looking for a good cabin, missing parts and bad parts should be replaced.
i thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and if i was you and had the know how and patience that you have with these things i would take off that pump and refurbish it myself to the best of your ability and or try and source a second hand working one for as low cost as possible and i wouldn't dis pare too much as you will find cheaper breaks to the build as you go as you did mention the underside and chassis tanks, etc are in good condition and should not cost too much to get this going so spending $$$ where it is most needed would be a good idea and in the end im sure you will get the satisfaction and the return on your investment. I will be following this now that i have came across and i also will subscribe to your channel as i found this most enjoyable thanks 🙂

Hey with prices of trucks these days any investment is a win,,,put WTBUY the parts U need and somebody got a scrap engine and parts lying in their garage...keep it and make it a yard mule with a hoist compressor andtools.
It doesn't sound like the Bendix is engaging after you added the second battery to the equation and by the way is that floor structurally sound enough to hold the weight of this batteries that cab looks like it's a pretty much a rust bucket the other thing you could do is put a Lamborghini Aventador body on top of it you know I have a rock crawler Lamborghini Aventador
Well since the cab is toast why don't you find the Mercedes-Benz station wagon body to put on the top of it that'd be a hell of a vehicle

Don't you have a pump to try from another 636 engine?? Otherwise repairing the pump isn't difficult, you can do it yourself. I'd definitely try that
Oil down the intake, then try a squirt of Easy Start, just to see it run for a couple of seconds.
