    Concerning the laser lense, most people foreget that the lens has two sides. Also there are mirrors and the glass on the laser diode which can get dirty, especially if the device was used by heavy smokers.
    If cleaning the upper lens side doesn't worke, I usually demount the Laser essembly from the horizontal worm gear and throw it into my ultrasonic cleaner for some minutes (just water and a little bit of soap and a little bit of IPA). After the washing I dry it as good as possible and let it dry completely out over night.
    I usually try this before messing around with the potentiometers as a wrong setting may burn the laser diode.

    Beyond the restoration (which was great as always btw) I'm actually very impressed that the device turned on and gave video. Guess it goes to show how durable these older gen consoles actually were.
    The disk not reading isn't too surprising as those lasers tend to wear out overtime, hell maybe it was the reason the original owner stopped using it.

    Great restoration as always, but what blows my mind is the mold making that went into making something like this. The buttons, levers, covers, all seem ridiculously engineered and complex for a video game console that's almost 30 years old. Also, every part is perfectly molded with no flash or any other defects I can see. Japanese go hard when it comes to their video games.

    I remember playing alot on the PS1 as a kid, it's feels weird to see one age and earn the title "classic" or "retro" console, when I can still vaguely remember how they're state of the art at the time.......
    Damn I feel old....

    0:57 It's very rare to find one of the first PS1 models (with a parallel port), without any broken pins where the CD fits.

    • @zekeram129
      @zekeram129 2 роки тому +2

      What does the parallel port do anyway?

    • @Greed26
      @Greed26 2 роки тому +4

      @@zekeram129 from what I understand, it was added as a way for sony to make additional accessories and hardware upgrades down the road that you could just plug in, kinda like the 32x on the sega mega drive, but they never ended up doing anything with it so they started covering it up (but still having it on the motherboard) in later models before completely doing away with it in some of the later revisions.

    • @guilhermelopesfotografo
      @guilhermelopesfotografo 2 роки тому +3

      The only accessory that used the parallel port was GameShark/Action Replay. On later models, the port was removed.

      @Nimbus Starplume on that I'm not sure. I only know the basics of what this mod does from when I was doing a little research on what I wanted to do with my ps1. I ended up going with an xstation mod personally.

    Whenever I watch these types of videos, I’m always amazed at what we can do, as human beings. Like how the hell do we create such complex stuff and how the hell do people, take stuff apart, fix and put back together again. Although, I don’t watch many of theee types of videos, anymore. I watched 1 recently where they was showing fake restorations and they just killed it for me.

    So, I'm guessing that the chip allows the data from to be loaded into the console much like it would from a disc, while at the same time telling the console that the game is an 'official copy' which the correct region data.
    The way that copy protection worked on the console used a very little known fact about CD lasers, mainly that they can read right into the centre ring of the disc. Sony were the only company to take advantage of this and when the game discs were produced, a spiral track of data was placed on this ring that no one else had the ability to reproduce. to make it even more secure, they took advantage of the laser's lens being 'floated' around in an electromagnetic field, as this was necessary for all CD lasers because the data track wasn't always perfectly cantered, so micro adjustments were needed to read the data. what this means for the copy protection in that the data track in the centre ring wobbles, which made it near impossible to reproduce. this is the sound you can hear the laser making as it scan for region data where seems to zip back and forth rapidly. When you 'chipped' a PlayStation console, the chip would send data to the BIOS telling the console the game was official and the right region too

      lmao i know right? first time i ever bought a set of ps1s for repair i found a ratty modchip installed, cold joints, overly long cables, dusty nasty tape holding it together. Eventually trying to safely free the cables from their cold jointed prisons ended up lifting a pad off the board. rip.

    you make really good relaxed videos about cleaning and repair where things technical problems and everything works again. I'm so curious how that looks like new in the end🤩
    Your videos show real good conscience like tutorials.
    You're really good at this kind of thing, could you do a ps4 controller tutorial to fix the shell on it? Change shell on ps4 controller, instead of black ps4 controller another skin color shell. 👀👍
    Or a tutorial, why a ps4 makes loud noises. maybe you can fix how or why it is. 😄 and.. my ps4 controller R1 button doesn't quite work properly. the R1 button is very low as if you can't press it anymore and is half as nonfunctional. the (x) button is very easy to press. could you put out a tutorial, how to fix it?
    Thanks 😁
