I Restored This $5 Ebay Junk Gameboy Advance. It Used to be Blue - Retro Console Repair

- Опубліковано 24 лис 2024
- I found this ruined Gameboy Advance for $5 it was sold as junk and it doesn't work. It is extremely yellow. The original color was transparent light blue called Glacier. This sort of projects are always interesting as I never know if the console has been completely destroyed on the inside or if it has only a small issue. Check out also my Gameboy t-shirt design, I will remove it from the store at the end of March: teespring.com/...
I started the restoration by trying to get the power on. First I tried to clean corroded the contacts. To do that I needed to desolder the top of the switch. New switches can also be bought online if you just prefer to change it. After opening the switch I used isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the contacts. If you can't desolder it you can try to get isopropyl alcohol in the switch and then turn it on and off multiple times (with no batteries) similarly to what I will do with the volume wheel. However I think this is not as good method because it only spreads the dirt on on the inside rather than removing it. Once I got the power on I noticed the volume wheel didn't do much. It occasionally got some contact and turned the volume louder for a brief moment. I thought that it may have the same issue as the power switch. It was so this was very easy fix from the "technical" point. These were the only functional issues I found.
I also removed the yellowing from the plastic shell which was supposed to be colorless. For this I used the same retrobrighting method as always. H2O2 and UV-light. Full tutorial here: • How to remove yellowin...

Imagine how many stuff you lost as "broken" and the whole problem was just cleaning the on/off switch
I know, we hv this place where we help peeps fix stuff they are gonna throw away, and surprisingly a lot of them could still work after being cleaned and some parts reconnected.
I had to throw away many headphones cause i couldnt fix the weld without equipment. I tried to bring them to stores but none wanted to do it. Had no choice but to replace them. Everything was much easier to fix back in the day. Now the first word you hear from a repair shop is to buy a new item. And it's like they're train not to fix it completely
@@MsLaetitia26 exactly. my ps2 has been broken since 2011/2012 and when i took it to the reparation guy he said i should just forget about it and get a new console because ps2 is outdated anyway and no one is going to waste their time trying to fix that. i'm over 20 now and still love that thing no matter how outdated it was. and now i think it's lost somewhere when i moved to a new place. 😔💔

Odd Tinkering is the Lawrence Joel of restoring broken game consoles and antiques to their former glory. Lawrence Joel was a medic in the US Army during the wars in Korea and Vietnam. On November 8th, 1965 Lawrence became well-known for having saved many lives of the 173rd Airborne brigade during Operation Hump in Vietnam's War Zone D despite being severely wounded himself. After having been treated in Saigon, South Vietnam and in Tokyo, Japan; Lawrence was awarded the United States Medal of Honor for his actions, making him the first living black man since the Spanish-American War to receive such a high recognition. Lawrence retired from the military in 1973 and died eleven years later in 1984 at his home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina from complications stemming from diabetes.

Right! Like I wonder if he buys the stuff and when restores em, does he send em a link to what he's done to them afterwards. That would be badass.

Nintendo needs to start making translucent handhelds again, they're so pretty.
I agree! I once had a 3ds charger that was translucent blue.
You can buy the shells for the switch. They come in all the classic n64 translucent colors
@@Urtbreh they just don't have the same flare though. Nintendo did more than just make the case transparent. The bezels had texture and the hardware inside was coloured for the sole purpose of matching up with the transparent plastic. Even the button cushions had a complimenting colour. But most of these transparent body kits for switches seem to overlook that aspect for a quick buck.

I can’t imagine how strained our eyes were back then when Gameboys didn’t have a backlight.
hehe, you didn't have the super ultra mega lamp w/ magnifying glass clipped on to yours. It was an insane aparatus that attached to the top of the gba that came up and over the screen. It ate AAs 10x faster than the system itself. I don't remember the actual name of the product so I made up my own lol.
Older handheld consoles from original Gameboy to more recent ones have serious modding communities that mod everything from backlight to batteries to sound in them. Some even sell them with mods. No need to try and make out stuff from non backlit screens if you don't want to.
Then the gameboy advance sp came out

The glass was so clear that the only scratches I saw were on my phone. 😂
This guy could make a business if he repaired consoles sent in, I would intrust my console in his hands
yea me too!
yeah me too! my ds lite's top screen is broken and there are a few cracks at the shell so i would ask him to change the case (since this is my sister's ds and is pink) and fix the top screen.
I buy a lot of old consoles and I’d send him all of them just for a checkup.
I think this guy already has a good business goin lol
@@orangeleaf36 it always "My sister pink stuf"
Thank you for this video! My GBA gave up the ghost recently and I was worried that there wasn't anything I'd be able to do to fix it. Remembered seeing this video before , bought a tri-wing screwdriver, cracked that sucker open, and sure enough all I needed to do was clean the power switch.
When you did the angry gameboy shaking you reminded me of that Japanese guy with the cow water jugs that makes knives out of weird stuff.
And the comments on screen remind me of the "I make a new one" tool restoration guy
You mean kiwami japan?
It seems you and I watch similar channels, cause I know exactly small you're talking about
Kiwami Japan and my mechanics, alongside odd tinkering one of the best channels out there
wolfrig2000 this dude is literally kiwami japan with repairs.
I am totally not surprised there is crossover appeal for these two. Same energy. Same dedication.
In the year 2040: 'I restore a yellowed PS5'
That i bought for 10$
I wanna be notified when this happens
Just imagine restoring that with everything inside of that
I wouldn't be surprised
U can't. Todays technology isn't meant to be repaired
I love seeing these videos! I just love it when you see how broken or dirty or both it is before then you see him clean and fix it and you get a before and after! I love this!
Hearing that *gling* on the start up makes me want to cry 😭
I miss my gameboys 😢
Its like he doing asmr without trying do do asmr.
Unintentional ASMR is the best type.
I was wondering if I was the only one who noticed that...
My thoughts exactly
Yep
This proves alcohol can indeed fix anything!
**drinks alcohol**
**cries**
and rethinking life
Have a nice day
Well there's your problem: you're drinking ethanol, CH3CH2OH. The alcohol that fixes everything is isopropyl alcohol, CH3CHOHCH3. If you drink enough of that all of your problems will be over soon enough.

@@muptezelbayan7585 what
Was this game boy primary used behind an exhaust pipe?
No it was a barroom that allowed smoking. It also stunk lol
Glad theres people like this guy that repairs everything in the device and doesn’t just replace anything that doesn’t work. Only thing he replaces is a sheet of polarized film.
9:49 “the ductor is here” idk why that melted my heart ;;
Mr. Ductor always makes me feel better :)
Odd Tinkering: "Needs to open with special-"

How to be as intelligent as Einstein for normies
I'd use a proper screwdriver. But what do I know, as a female.
Don't use kitchen knives as tools, it drives me mad.
Reminds me of when me and my friend had to replace the can in my 360 slim
You have to a special pick to pop latches for the casing. We just shoved a flat head in some and smaller clips we just rammed a knife in.
Jajaja i use knife for ps4 controll
This is basically the toy story fixing woody scene but without music

There is something oddly therapeutic about watching you repair and restore old tech. Good job my friend.
This guy feels like the old dude that cleaned woody in toy story 2, he shakes a lot _but_ he does clean everything perfectly
I WAS THINKING THE EXACT SAME HAHAHA
I dont know why youtube recommended to watch this at 2:49am. But I'm satisfied to the result

Why did i see this comment at 2:49 am

This video was something magical and made me think about when I was a kid how much I loved my Gameboy Advance. Something about the time and care that goes into this restoration made me feel all warm inside. Seeing care for a machine that made so many children happy for so many hours made me feel really good! Thank you!
I'm a sucker for old console's.
And seeing you fix them up after people throw them out like trash warm's my heart.
I honestly love how slow and careful you are when removing parts and putting them back together. Because of this, I do this everytime I make a sandwich now. Thank you.
Do you also clean them with isopropyl alcohol

Gamer boy advance muito bom #subs Gamer play UA-cam PlayStation videos ?
Normie: Why do you repair an old console that counting the materials you used to fix it, its more expensive that buying a new one?
Odd Tinkering: my goals are beyond your understanding
kindertuc Ugarte The Flash reference? :P
Actually you can make quite a bit of profit from fixing a GBA like this.
The materials he used are probably old and plus he would have money to do this
Right? Fix it and install a backlight onto the thing, and I am sure he'd make bank.
did it for the 3m+ views haha
I’d recommend a cheap set of artist brushes for when the toothbrush just won’t fit for your cleaning small components. I use them with a variety of tip types.
Shut up nerd
The bristles of the artist brushes are too soft, unlike cleaning brushes like a toothbrush which are stiff, even the ones for painting houses can be a bit too soft, or even leave hair behind, specially cheap artist brushes.
Golden Cyber Sure. Camel hair are too soft, so I use nylon, generally, and often cut them shorter to stiffen further. Boar bristle can work, too, if you can find them. (For portraits I use my good quality brushes and such) Haven’t had any shedding of bristles that a forcep couldn’t handle. Gets into nooks and crannies a larger brush cannot, which was why I mentioned it after seeing him scrub inside the switch body. Does great job with his work.
@@ShinyaSpooky I think he's talking about those cheap artist brushes you buy at the Dollar Tree
@@ShinyaSpooky you know the ones with the really scratchy bristles
