Quick rundown of what I did to replace my lower ball joints on my Ram 1500 Big Horn 4x4. Sorry for ending so abruptly, got a phone call and figured I talked enough at that point. lol
#Ram1500 #Moog #ProblemSaver
(Updated 9/10/19 Moog's have failed less than a year later.) #neveragain
Firestone just tired to replace my brand new CV axles and refused to do my warranty alignment... What a wonderful place
Excellent video. I would tackle my uppers and lowers now. Even if you need to buy some specialty tools, it’s better than spending over 2 grand, and you have the tools after.
Nice video! I almost bought the same Moog's until I seen they only lasted you a year. I also bought the Mevotechs, waiting for the weather to warm up here in ohio because I dont have a garage to do it in. I also am changing the end links, upper control arms, lower ball joints, passenger cv axle, shocks, and sway bar bushings. I bought the Bilstien adjustable and planned on going the full adjustment but now that I seen the stress on your uppers, I might go a bit lower
Thanks bud! The Mevotech's are doing great, and you will love the Bilstein's! You should be ok with running them at full height. I have had no problems with uppers since I've installed the Bilstein's. I definitely wouldn't recommend the lift pucks that are all over the internet, Bilstein has done there research. I would definitely replace the Upper Front Shock Mounts when you replace the shocks! They are bad about tearing, I had one completely broke and the other was tore about half way.
Good luck!
Thanks man from 2023.
I have a newer video on this if you want to check it out.
Wheres the helpful tip of Freezing the ball joint before installing it ?
Well, there it is. ^^^
Freeze them overnight and pull them out right before installing them.
Let them sit for an hour to warm back up and expand before you torque a nut on it.
Same as bearings, let them warm back up and DO NOT HEAT THEM YOURSELF !
✌❤
The factory lower ball joints, on my other 4th gen I had to grind the top off with a grinder to punch them out they were a pain. I put in the Moog ones that need a grease needle to grease them and they last less than a year and started to squeak and I couldn't get grease into them.
They are terrible. I made another video replacing those. Lol
@@DavesBuild I agree one hundred percent!
Moog sucks now.
It's alot better to do it yourself if you can.
Most shops think brake, steering & suspension work is a lisc. to STEAL.
If ya can’t do it yourself, pay the price. Simple
How did you separate the lower ball joint from the knuckle? Ive tried penetrating spray, heat, dead blow and a pickle fork but will not seperate. Im surprised i haven't cracked my knuckle. Very frustrating..
I have a 14 ram with a rough country level kit and 35x11.5x20 on the stock wheels. It was installed 10,000 miles ago. The truck now has 62k on it. My ball joints are all worn out. I have an extended warranty but I’m not sure they’ll cover the repair before the truck is leveled. They want 2100 to fix it.
That just crazy to me! I rented a ball joint pusher from O'Reilly's and had both sides completely done in less than 2 hours. I dreaded it because of how invasive it was. Once I got started it was way easier.
Your level kit is why your eating up ball joints
We’re those the stock control arms and ball joints. I replaced my driver side lower and it was absolutely miserable so for the passenger side I want to just change the lower ball joint. Just need to know if those can be pressed out on a stock suspension
Yes. Those were stock. I did not have any luck with the moog ball joints and have since changed those out as well.
Dave's Home Build awesome. On the drivers side I had to cut out the alignment bolts in the lower control arm to get those off so I’m not going through all of that again. Thanks for the response
@@joncampbell5321 what year was your ram? Did you try heating up the bolts and sledging it?
@@sergjavier1582 yes but due to driving in flooding from the ocean they were so rusted that I had to cut them out and replace the entire lower arm
My factory joints have notches stamped into them and the dealer states I must replace the entire arm. Suggestions on removing the factory lower ball joints? Thinking about taking a grinder to those "tabs" but unsure. Also are the tops the same? Or will those push out? THANKS!
Just take a punch and knock them back in. As far as the uppers go, just replace the entire arm. My other video covers that process.
I’m bout to change my lower ball joints on my truck, what drill did you use for the ball joint press?
I just used an electric 1/2" impact.
Have you ever had to change out your cv axles?
Need help takin out the lower ball joint
Are those moog ball joints working good so far???
No they lasted maybe 6 months.
how did you press that out.. was that stock ball joints
I rented a ball joint press from O'Reilly's. I replaced the factory ball joints with Moog Problem Saver Ball Joints.
@@DavesBuild the one I changed was one whole unit control arm for both sides
No boot on your ball joint?
It has a pre installed almost flush design on the new Moog ball joints. Didn't work for me. Others may have a different outcome though.
Highway robbery and it's a simple job
How are the moog lower ball joints holding up? Year later
They are holding strong! I now have 170k on the truck.
I just found today that both lowers are bad again! 🤦♂️
@@DavesBuild So they only lasted a year? Do you think it's because of the lift? I have a 2" leveling kit on mine. Changing my lowers today 195k on my truck.
@@jbrev007 I'm not real sure. They have terrible reviews, I just bought some heavy duty Mevotech (spell) ones to replace them, they had awesome reviews and a lifetime warranty. I've read some reviews on the moog yesterday and one person said they had very minimal grease in them. 🤷♂️
@@DavesBuild Dave, do you have that part number? I was looking at those too and Yukons.
I *WISH* it only took 5 1/2 hrs......
27 hours to get the driver side wheel bearing off - well, its not off yet.
Axle froze inside the bearing.
Had to remove the upper balljoint, tie rod end & cut the lower ball joint, strap up the axle and pull it out with a 1000cc Polaris side by side.
Ram trucks are freaking *GARBAGE* !!
They make hub pullers for that? And that happens on litterly any vehicle that has axles that go through the bearing....
@@jessevella7616
Um yeah.
Been doing this for 28 years.
Some are just a bitch like that.
Thanks for the expert advice though.
@@jessevella7616
And it's spelled literally
@@franklyspeaking4480 you should literally try taking out a Ford wheel bearing if you think Ram ones are garbage...
