Front CV Axle Replacement on the Dodge Ram Truck and Other Damage Report from Last Trip

- Опубліковано 23 лют 2018
- In this video I take a walk around the AutoEdit 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 truck and show some of the damage that happened on the last off road 4x4 adventure trying to climb Miller Jeep trail. If you haven't seen that video, please give it a watch.... it's pretty good!
If you are here for the axle install only go to 6:58 in the video for that and less jibber jabber out of me.
After showing all of the new "character" that I added to the truck... we dig in and repair the broken front CV axle that happened on the trail. It's a fairly straight forward repair and I run through the main points of installation. - Авто та транспорт
I've been genuinely enjoying your individual content more than the stuff the Dirt Every Day crew has been putting out on Motortrend's youtube. Thank you for filling in where Motortrend has been lacking.
Oh man... those guys do an amazing job... I hear ya tho. I'll never be able to compare but will have fun and entertain/educate as best as I can! Thank you for the support and taking a minute to say hey!
The trufe!
Thanks for posting this vid. Now that it is back in action please take us on another adventure!
Well, I'll get out again as soon as I can! So thank you!
You might get a lot of comments that say this but for real this is my favorite youtube channel out there, its always fun and entertaining to watch what will happen next and to keep up to date on your projects!
Thank you sooooo much! I'm so glad you can make it through these and appreciate the support!
Make it through? Pff i just binge watched your mustang playlist and your jeep playlist its such good content!
Hey Jason. I was just scrolling through the comments and noticed that you reacted to almost all of them and commented. That along with your EXELENT video quality and commitment earned you a sub. Thank you for you hard work and great fun videos.
Howdy and welcome to the channel! I really appreciate every view and if you take a moment to comment I’ll try to say thanks... plus I learn all kinds of things from my you tube friends!
This video helped me take my axles out with confidence. Had some head scratching on the drivers side but passenger side done in 20 mins...including cleaning time of course. Thanks for the vid.
What was going on with the drivers side? I’m about to do mine
You are the only one on UA-cam that is absolutely impossible to hate or dislike.
Thank you again for your awsome Vids!!
So glad to hear this... I wish it were actually true but I REALLY appreciate the people like you who support the channel and then go above and beyond by taking the time to say something so nice!
THANK YOU !!!!
Awesome video and awesome to see you get your 4 wheel drive back. That was a nasty break.
Thanks so much... it wasn't so bad... plus it was good to check out how everything else is doing under there!
One of my favorite UA-cam channels. Thanks for posting. Thanks to you, I’ll be ordering some PowerStop brakes soon.
Great to hear! Thank you for the support on the channel... it is appreciated!
Great video as always , i can’t wait for the next one , i really enjoy every video you post , great job buddy
Well dang! Thanks so much!
Awesome Jason! I was surprised to see this video this morning. Haha I didn't think you were going to make a video. Glad you did, I always enjoy watching them! Cheers!
Glad to surprise you! Thanks for giving it a watch and saying so!
It's funny had a JK so I watched your videos, then got a RAM 1500 quad bad in 2016 watched your videos again now due to disability no longer drive or have either but I still enjoy watching.
Hate to hear about you no longer driving but I am glad you can hang around here with me! Thank you!!!!!
Great walkthrough on that, I'm glad you ended up shooting that video. Seems like a relatively simple repair, I bet you're now carrying an extra axle in that truck! I like the suspension setup too, with the coil overs and that uniball upper ball joint. Also the way the splined axle sticks out of the diff, rather than the end of the CV sticking into it.
Just a tip on getting that axle nut off if you don't have air or any resistance behind it... I had this problem on one of my cars, I took a long prybar and wedged it between the lug studs and the ground, so it could only turn a bit before it wedged itself between the studs and the ground, stopping any further rotation. Reposition the bar for tightening. Excuse me if I'm captain obvious for pointing this out, but it was a headscratcher for me until this idea popped into my mind, haha.
Thanks for the tip... always appreciated!
Beautiful truck! I love that you drive it hard too. Definitely not a mall crawler here haha..good stuff👍
Yeah buddy!
This helps I really liked how much in full detail u did on everything I haven't seen many do this nice video
Thanks for taking a moment to say so!
@@AutoEdits no problem anytime I'm working with cv axles right now as well ur video helped me some I really liked ur detail
Definitely glad you filmed the repair good vidd
Thanks!!!!
Not on fire = good day
You got that right!
K
Nice video as always!
Yeah! Thanks!
I was cringeing watching that bad ass truck take that damage on your hill adventure lol. But anyways thanks for that lesson! I'm currently dealing with replacing cv axle. Great video man! Good directing and great detail! Thanks again!👍🏼🙌🏼🍻
Hey jason i was watching trucku the tv show today and they put in a b and m shifter in a jk and ill have to say your videography was much better than the tv shows
That's awesome to hear, makes me pretty happy to know I can hang with the big boys production!
Thanks so much and have a great one!
Love the videos!
Thanks for the video, I need to do this to my truck and glad you showed a video on how to.
Glad to help!
You made that look easy for install , mines fighting me , the lock ring is a battle for some reason
Spray a little penetrating oil in there and then get after it with a hammer.
Another great video! It is hard making a video while doing a repair especially when your hands are all dirty
Thanks dude! That is a real thing... I don't want to destroy my camera gear with greasy fingers so that takes real time to clean and re-adjust.
you still manage to get amazing shots. Guess it comes with practice if you have the chance check out my latest trail video and let me know if you have any pointers
Not gonna lie-- I cried a little bit seeing all the scratches and damage on your beautiful truck.
LOL! Well, that's what I go that truck for... to go on lots of off road adventures and those scratches and broken parts come along with that... doesn't make it easy but at least I expected it!
Thanks so much for caring for that awesome truck, I do love that thing as well!
Thx for the video, good to know how to replace those type of axles.
Glad it was an easyish repair and that you could get out of the trails
I enjoy your videos, and am jealous of your awesome dog!
Glad you enjoy my videos and my silly dog... I like her too.
Great video as always!
Thanks dude!
Love the video and love the truck more and more.
Awesome to hear this! Thanks
Yes!!! You sir are a gentleman. Thank you!
Well, thank you!
Need thread locker on cv axle nut if you’re reusing it..also need a torque wrench on the spindle nut or you’ll be replacing that wheel hub bearing soon
Love your videos!!!!!!!
Thanks dude!
Dude thanks just thanks....I’m learning as I go with my ram
Glad to hear that... these are great trucks!
I love that paint scheme. Hope you did a video on getting that done. That paint job would set my 07 1500 Reg cab off! I'm replacing my CV's this weekend but I'm adding TheRamMan Inc locking hubs at the same time. Should make all those moving parts up front last longer since they all turn 100% of the time. Will help keep the balls in the sack...
Rust free repairs, so envious!!! it was noted to sand/compound the headlights after that you could check into getting some Xpel or other clear self healing wrap to cover the headlights and protect them long term. As for the push bar, consider powder coating? Honestly, after the breakage of the axle on the trail I would have been surprised if you didn't make a video of the damage inflicted and the repair to the truck. Great video as usual!
Yes, we are lucky on the West coast with that stuff on the undercarriage... Thanks for the tip on the headlight protection.
I appreciate you watching, the views are pretty low lately and making it hard to keep going sometimes... so Thanks a ton!
Hi. Great videos. Just curious what rims you’re running. Diameter, offset and if their real bead locks. If so have you had any legal issues with chp
Nice job man !!! 😉😉😉
Thank you very much!
Hey Jason your videos and production are top notch always look forward to them no matter what vehicle your working or beating the balls out of lol!!
Glad you appreciated that...lol
I'm an old guy but have the mind of a child.
autoedit not a child your young at heart and so am I there is nothing wrong with that. Great sense of humour and pretty even keeled easy going personality that is not easily rattled. I'm sure that most if not all your subscribers would agree that your a cool cat. Just keep em coming and don't ever change.
"Except for that one time in college" fuckin' ay. That got me crackin'
YES!!! So glad you appreciated that... as I was editing the piece I almost cut that out and thought someone will get a chuckle out of it. The stuff that flies out of my mouth when the cameras are on is silly.
Really sorry to hear that you only had one ball left. (sorry Couldn't help it Jason, you open'd the door way too wide XD)
Can't wait to see a mustang video!
LOL! Yes, I have a few things waiting to go for the Mustang... just need to get it into the mix but daily driver's take precedence right now and those videos get such a low view count right now.
I guess some of the new viewers arn't here for the 'Stang. I know I sub'd for the V10 Maverick.... That was some 5years ago now O_O wow. Keep making those videos, really enjoy your style.
Nice work. That off road video probably took some time to edit with all that endless footage!
Thanks! It did take some time but I like that process.
Once again a great video man I love all of them always blast to watch. Not related to the video but I just purchased a JKU Rubicon Black 6 spd all stock only problem I’ve noticed and just wanted to confirm if your having the same issue with a Dry start issue I have noticed. 40k exactly on the ticker just wanted to see if u have heard anything or know any about the issue thx man keep up the great work.
Do you mean the lifter noise for a few seconds after start up? Yes, I have heard of that but fortunately it hasn't been very prominent on this Jeep. I have switched to Lucas oil and run their additive and the engine seems very happy with it for the last 10,000 miles. At least try their oil additive right now and see if that helps.
Thanks checking out the videos and the comment!
autoedit Thanks man for info will switch and try
Question: I Got Limted 2012 ram.
I'm having a problem when I shift into 4x4 the truck start to jitter from the front. When I'm on 2WD IT DRIVES PERFECT only when I shift into 4x4 or low I feel the jitter as I take off into speed. When I'm on the highway the truck runs good. I'm trying to determine if my axel went bad or if my 4x4 differential went bad. I turn the rigth axel clock wise and counter to see if my differential was bad on the right side it turned but on the left side it didn't it felt locked. Those this mean my axel on the left bad or my 4x4 differential bad?
Great video has always, I've been looking to get rear lockers on my 08 ram, just stuck on the front Limited slip or closed locker.
Thanks so much, I'm not sure what to run up front... I've heard about guys splitting the front diff. apart with a locker in it. Locker in the rear is a must for sure! We'll see...
no spacer or washer before the CV axle nut? seems like a lot of the threads exposed a washer would displace the nut pressure better your thoughts?
Love the truck!
Thanks, I do to!
dang it did get some trail rash but glad you got it out of there with that broken axle. You should go back and tame that trail with the black rubi..
cheers
YES I SHOULD! LOL
Pretty sure I’ve seen you out in Valencia before?🤔 love the channel just subscribed and hopefully someday we can meet up and hit some trails
That would be cool!
Thanks 4 sharing I'm A Big Fan.
Thank you!!!!
Dodge ram cv joints seem to break too ez!
I like your tire tread ,what make of tire is it?Are they just mud n snow tires or highway and offrd?
You should do a supercharger install video
I'm subscribing for very high quality content and Pinto the shop dog 🐕. High five !
Welcome and thanks! Belly rubs for the dogs!
autoedit I'm not subscribing from today. I'm subscriber up to couple months. I always coment something about Pinto.
I recognize your thumbnail... thanks for the shout!
Great Video. What holds the axel onto the spline sticking out if the differential? Mine is loose and I can slide it up and down the spline about 1/2”. Seems wrong the other side is tight and seems to have a better dust cover. Any advice is appreciated!!! Thanks
There's a "C" clip in a groove on the stub axle. If that is broken or missing could cause that to seem loose.
Awww, that makes sense, I will see if I can buy one. Will the CV axel just snap over the clip or how do actually clip it? Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it!
@@brettbrown7145 Yes, it does just snap over the clip and then a bit of a tap with a mallet or pry bar to get it back off.
AutoEdits awesome thanks!!
“Eventually I’ll update that” I would think this is the time! Whenever I break a stock part, I try to upgrade the replacement! Get rid of weak points!
How’s the light output on those aftermarket headlights compared to the quads you had? Been considering getting a set.
They look amazing... the light is very similar to the stuff I pulled out... definitely not more light so keep that in mind.
What brand of Cv shaft are you using? Oem or aftermarket. I have a 2013 ram with 6” lift. Going do a gear swap soon (and swap in a 2010 front diff as the 13s you can’t change gears in) and if there’s a strong then stock version I’d change the shafts out in the process. Can’t find anything online
I put an OEM replacement back in during this video but ordered two nearly unbreakable shafts from RCV for the rebuild. Those units are guaranteed up to 42 inch tires! They are in the process of making the first set for this truck but call them and tell them I sent you and at least get a price... they are the best in the business. www.rcvperformance.com/
autoedit 😍😍 really! Yes I know they are best in the business, was on their site never seen anything but I differently will as the smallest tires I say will on this one after I finish the 4.56 gears is a 37 or 38. So that’ll do me well. A full rear locker to replace my rear lsd might be in the works to yet
Hey, great video! Very informative. Quick question, any time I watch anyone doing any work in the wheel well they just say to put it all back together again, but never really give any torque specs for thing like the axle nut, ball joint, upper strut bolt, etc. Are you finding those torque specs or just tightening till it feels right? Hitting anything without a torque wrench finish always scares me. Thanks!
Sometimes I torque and sometimes I don't. After years of using my calibrated elbow and knowing that I service my vehicles often, I feel comfortable with this. It's always better to torque than not to.
Unbolted everything on my 2010 ram to pullout the drivers side axle shaft, can not get it loose, to come out of the diff. Pulled on it with ratchet straps, tried pry bars, tried beating it out with a hammer, but there isnt much room to swing the hammer. Any ideas?
Sorry to hear that. Definitely spray penetrating lube on the splines inside the collar and maybe rent a slide hammer to help pull it loose of the clip ring.
autoedit Thanks I tried PB blaster, but it still didnt budge. I ended up cutting off the CV flange with a 6” wafer wheel on a grinder, and then cutting the half inch thick shaft that goes over the splines into two halves with a dremel with 1” cutoff wheels. Even after i cut it in two halves, I still had to pound them off with a chisel.
More dodge videos too! We love the truck! Also how are the headlights working for you? Are they bright at night?
Thanks! The headlights are pretty good at night.... I love the looks of them tho.
Hey Jason missing those Jeep videos
There are a few coming up... thanks for hanging in there!
Hi I have my friends truck a 2009 dodge ram 1500. I have a question for you. Since my friend put a 3 or 4 inch lift on the truck and the cv axles are at its limit as far as angle do you know how I can fix this. The rear is blocks and the front lift is just spacers on top of the struts. Thank you in advance.
To get longer axle shafts made is expensive and that's what I did. I went to RCV and ordered them up. Here's a video on that install ua-cam.com/video/cvtI-xU7IME/v-deo.html
Hey man, was as I’m doing my front end was wonder if you knew of any options for lca’s (minus stamped steel versions as it’s junk) with grease fittings? I’m doing jba off road uppers. So if there’s a truck lca option I’d like to do them too
I ordered some Mevotech lower control arms from JC Whitney and they are an upgrade from stock!
www.jcwhitney.com/details/Dodge/Ram+1500/Mevotech/Control_Arm/2009/TRX4/MEMS25149.html#plpslot4
Did your ram come with the cast aluminum or oem stamped steel lowers? I have the cast aluminum and love them except for the fact there’s not grease fittings
Really enjoy the channel ! I know this one is a couple years old but could you share which brand of axle you chose to use for a replacement?
I don't remember... whatever the Pep Boys standard replacement was.
@@AutoEdits That works! I'll start there, I want to eventually beef up the drivetrain/suspension. This will get me by until I can put a game plan together. I definitely enjoy the channel! Thanks!
Dodge ram cv joints seem to break too ez!
I like your tire tread ,what make of tire is it?
Jason, do you think a solid axle front end would have broken? I bought a 2500 gas ram just because I've broken a lot of IFS stuff in the past
I don't think a solid front axle would've had a problem in this instance but in another video I show the solution to this particular problem with RCV axle shafts so this isn't a weak spot any more but what's next....?
if u are upset u scratched up ur new headlights u can buff them out with a mini buffer! i work in a body shop we do it all the time. works great if u wet sand with 1500 first then buff the crap out of them with extra cut compound and a wool pad then polishing compound :)
Thanks for the tip!
6 minute mark: should I make a joke about balls? I kinda set myself up for a joke. Nah, I won't.
Forty seconds later: ok I'll do 3 balls jokes lol
HAHAHA!!! Perfect analysis!
If you want a new paint job, you should look into Raptor Bed Liner. It is diy friendly and no more scratches or rust. I did it to my Ram 1500 bumpers and it looks good.
Thanks!
Time for a suspension upgrade on the Ram. Based on the way you use your truck you need something more substantial like 2.5" shocks.
Funny you should mention that... I am doing just that very soon the truck!
Love your repairs.....
I just lifted my truck...and I get an annoying small knocking...yes I’ve checked all nuts and bolts. All torqued. Solid
I only get it when coasting in a parking lot with small bumps or potholes.
I’ve checked everything. Took it to two shops...they thinks it’s my coilovers from fox....
But when I get under the truck...the only thing that is sort of loose Is the play in the two drive axles in front.
I guess I can see if hitting small bumps , this can maybe transmit the knocking and make it seem like more than what it it
I relate the sound to a broken sway bar link ....but not as long and strong
So...with your new axles...grabbing them with your hand...can you move it up and down to make a knocking sound...or are the tight and solid?
Really great video. Love the look of your truck. They should have kept those trucks with solid front axle. 🤦♂️ cv’s break so easy.
Thanks! Yes the solid axle is stronger but this thing drives so nice with the IFS and rear coil springs... I'm going to install RCV axles and they guarantee them up to 42" tires so I will be breaking other things after that!
Really wish I could comment with a picture to show you what my cv axle looked like
Do you reuse the old C clip on the stub shaft or install a new one every time?
I've reused a few times and then they seem to get a little difficult and I replace.
Were can I get the bed bars like yours? love how short they are.
This is a custom piece... I'll be getting rid of it later this year when I get a rack to hold my tent. I'll post it up.
I like your ram as it sits, but since you already have a Jeep as trail rig, have you thought about going full prerunner with this truck? You could make some sweet vids jumping in the dunes!
I love how you think! The Ram will stay more practical for good all around use. Making it a full blown pre-runner would be neat but I'm not sure I want to go that far with it... maybe after I get the Mustang running I can dig in more on the Ram but for now I want to keep it simple!
Anyone have a good idea for when the old (16 years, 248,000 miles) CV Axle won't come off from the engine-side? It comes out of the hub, but is stuck like the dickens onto the axle/shaft coming out of the front diff. I thought I tried the obvious prybar locations but all it looked like I was doing is denting aluminum parts. Any ideas? Or do I just pay for the problem to go away (i.e. take it to a professional shop)?
I hear you... had the same problem the very next time I tried to remove this axle. I ended up hitting it with a dead blow hammer and it eventually came out with the intermediate shaft still attached so I had to order a new one of those for an extra $65. I'm just glad it didn't do it on the drivers side. Watch this video ua-cam.com/video/cvtI-xU7IME/v-deo.html
What actually caused this and what upgrade could prevent a repeat? Great vid as usual, appreciate the time and effort, keep em coming.
These CV joints were not designed to handle the torque this engine can create AND the traction a set of 37" tires generates. Plus my driving skills might come into play a bit. RCV makes a much stronger CV Joint and axle that is guaranteed up to 42" inch tires but keep in mind... there are other pieces that will break... differential... control arms...etc. I'm going to order a set of those and we'll find out together what happens next but at least that will solve this weak link.
Thanks for the reply, look forward to the upgrades.
What mufflers do you have, sound awesome. And what headlights are those.?
I have a 2017 ram 1500 5.7 hemi
Flowmaster ... there's a video in the playlist for this truck build.
Nice video...what years your ram ...
Thanks! It's a 2009 and it's good.
Killer Truck !!
Is there any cv axle for 2.8" leveled front or would i have to put oem back in ?
RCV can make you custom length set.
Can you please make more video they are amazing
Well, I keep going as long as you keep watching! So thanks!!!!!
Where did you buy the upper control arm with the Uniball?
That's a custom made unit... I run the ICON upper control arm now and like it much better iconvehicledynamics.com/products/
Nice videos bro, just subscribe. I’m also getting into the offroad adventure scene, got an 05 Silverado Duramax, I’m looking to try to take it out but don’t know if any trails. Any ideas?
Depends on where you live. Look up local trails on the internet and go from there!
Welcome to the channel!
autoedit I’m near LAX. Thanks I’ll check it out. Keep up the good work.
How about the inner cv joints? I broke mine and I can’t find the ones made for ram 1500
I bought stock replacement CV axles from my local Pep Boys.
So the RCV axles are a little too pricey for me, is there a more affordable cv axle that can handle 37s?
Nope.
Another great fix but its time to spend some time on the Rubicon now....
Thank you! Yes, time to spread the love around a bit... Jeep stuff is ready to go!
Get the paint done ✅ on this beast bro.
No budget for that.
AutoEdits okay 😜
We will be doing a night run up Miller jeep trail Saturday May 26th if you would like to attempt it again.
We will meeting at flying J's 4:30pm headed out by 5:00 pm to trail head about 10 rigs maybe more
Lol i still remember when Fred drove this truck all the time
Yeah, this truck has had a VERY hard life. I'm so glad he built this thing because I really love it.
What size socket do you need to get the axle bolt off?
36mm
Great video brother!! Any plans on a new rear bumper like a high clearance one?
THANKS! Yes, I'd like a sweet rear bumper that matches some tough rocker guards... It's just a matter of finding a company or dude that will build them in exchange for me doing chores around the house or something!
That's would be sweet and a fun project for sure
@@AutoEdits drive it out to Sacramento I'll weld one up for you. I have most if not all the material already. It would be a Honor ☺️. I just got my front tube bumper done on my ram , and need to do my rear done as well.
@@mikerasmussen7993 Thanks for the offer but I had to sell the truck last year.
Just had my passenger cv shit the bed. Not sure I wanna fork up $400 for mopar. What’s another reputable brand I can get from rockauto?
I got the cheap cardone select and it's still going.
How long did the replacement take?
About an hour.
Tip: loosen the hub/axle nut with the wheel on and before jacking the truck
Good tip but with a strong impact gun it doesn’t take much to hold.
@@AutoEdits just saying this cause i remember years ago... actually decades ago, no one had impact guns at home. You had to break the nut with the wheel on . We only had breaker bar's aka... the jack handle!
What brand of CV axle did you go with?
I think it was the Cardone select.
@@AutoEdits I replaced them last year with Duralast and they're already bad again...looking for good options prior to an RCV upgrade.
What's the big socket size 35 or 36 mm? thanks
Why does everyone always remove the lower joint too? You replaced the axle by just swinging it down out of the way. Is it different on a stock truck? (I have to do my drivers side, and don’t want to remove the whole assembly just for the axle). 🇨🇦
I think with some extra strength you could compress the cv joints enough to get them in but I struggled with that so just kept disassembling.
@@AutoEdits Ok cool. I understand. Thank you for replying. 🇨🇦👍🏼
Keep the ram vids
Right on!
Just change the CV axle out on my 08 ram took me less than 18 pack
LOL
