In Every Breath You Take, you're missing one piece: the SPONGE.
Yep, not kidding, back in the day I read an interview of Andy, where he said that he didn't like the sound when palm muting the strings, so he went with a piece of sponge put under the strings just before the bridge.
I tried it and the stopping provided by the sponge was indeed spot-on, it gives a different sensation regarding attack, sustain and decay of the note when compared to palm muting.
Galandil Vogler I knew it! He does the same thing with an acoustic guitar on the chorus parts of Synchronicity 2. I've been using a piece of paper on that one. Any idea what kind of sponge and how thick, etc.?
Thats actually super cool. I always thought palm muting didnt sound or feel right... Thank you!
Galandil Vogler maybe Andy never learned to do it perfectly...? 😉
Makes sense. A lot of the bass greats, especially session players of the 60s played with foam, though foam doesn't entirely destroy sustain like it probably would on guitar
Sounds cool and keeps your guitar clean at same time
Summers is such a great guitarist, and the songs are so much fun to play, but trying to find someone to sing even remotely like Sting is impossible.
Got real close on several of those songs. Andy had a great sound.
Not me playing it Fred :-)
adam872 and great chops too
Why the past tense? He's still good right?
He may have forgotten which pedal he used back when but he still sounds great.
Hopefully not too close hahaha
Dominant 7sus4, a great way to sound like Andy in your song writing haha.
I think you can just treat it like a minor V :)

The Chorus industry should thank Andy Summers...
Yep - Andy Summers ( Police ) and Alex Lifeson ( Rush ) = 2 of my All Time Favorites
And don't forget Johnny Marr.
...because everybody tought he used a chorus most of the time when actually it was a flanger.
Well, It's half true. In the first years he used a Phase 90, but during the "Outlandos d'Amour" era, He got the Electric Mistress that He used in all his career with The Police. And in the final years, He used the Boss Chorus.
And in Latinoamerica the chorus industry should thank to Gustavo Cerati
Andy is one of my gods. I bought all the same pedals as you. When he broke through all there was only battered blues and 3 chord punk. A genius in the right band.
Summers apparently would use his compressor at the end of the chain which might explain why some of these aren’t quite right ( although righter than I’d get them I’m sure).
My gawd, this is so fantastic. Just what I needed in my life. Well done, sir.
Thanks man. I was watching germany police 1980. I got obsessed with what he used to play. I went to see them a couple times and all all I heard was andy and Stuart. It was as Sting was the Elvis of the police.
That sounds beautiful! The Police are my favorite group, and this really took me back to my Jr High/High School days!
Might be worth mentioning that in the studio version of Every Breath You Take, Andy is playing through a Roland JC-120 with the chorus on through the song. I think they also double miked the amp, as the chorus feature came through on only one speaker, to get a wider sonic depth. All that to say, for that song you might get closer to the tone with a chorus pedal at the end of your chain than in the trad position before delay
Oh man. What a nice format you have going here. And great great sounds!
*THE "DON'T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME" GUITAR INSTRUMENTAL IS JUST :*
👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌👌
Awesome. And kudos to Joe for braving the cold to make this video!
Fantastic these should be weekly!
Love Andy sounds
I was looking for this thanks again
Very nice sounds. Man, The Police were awesome.
This is great! I've also found that a Deluxe Memory Man (big box analog version) can produce a lot of similar tones. In combo with telecaster and a Marshall JMP.
Every Breath You Take was incredible, great job!
The coolest one yet !
I tried the combo Comp > Flange > Chorus > Plexi with the Xotic Sp instead of the Dyna and it's really interesting!
Thanks for sharing!
Great, thank you!
I’d be so happy with such a sound
Great one!
SOUNDS SO GOOD!!!!!! How about cage the elephant or Mac Demarco next.
Mac Demarco just uses a chorus and a spring reverb, and some delay but just a bit. It's particular sound it's on how he mixes and produces his albums and live how he set up his amps.
Matías Martínez yeah, but i would like to see an attempt using pedals, cause he used a rack chorus unit do most of 2, salad days, and another one, and i want to see if reverb can find a pedal that really closely emulates his sound. He also used a vibrato pedal for some of the early stuff.
well, that's a good point. Demarco has a pretty unusual to produce the sounds of his albums, but at least live he uses this: MXR Micro Amp, Boss CE-2, Boss DM-2w, and a tuner. And in some presentations I've seen an EHX Holy Grail Nano, so I'm guessing that in this particular show he got the reverb by the amp. About a pedal that resembles Mac's early stuff I'd suggest you to check out the Walrus Julia Chorus/Vibrato, it sounds very similar.
In this exact moment you can see the pedals that Mac has at hand. I hope I was helpful!

cage the elephant? just make every album after your first really boring and disappointing. not too hard.
Great job on this one lads
Cool thanks
Oh maii. Nice!
Yes!!! Do muse or Soundgarden next pls!!!
Very fuckin' cool.... The Police was a band that was able to take reggae, rock, pop... and roll into one big beautiful majestic ball! This video is pretty spot on To Andy's tone. Great job as always Reverb!
Lots of jazz tying it together
They sound darn close to me. Regardless, these samples are a joy to listen to, so crisp!
Nice one, Joe
I'm not sure if this has been stated down in the comments before, but Owen from the "Circle Of Tone" UA-cam channel posted a video named "Andy Summers of The Police - The $50 key to his tone." Check it out. This dude really knows his stuff, and is very entertaining to boot.
He was a genius
One of your best ones yet, joe! Great job
I'd love that tele
very cool
Beatles Part 3 perhaps? this time with Let It Be's guitar solo from single version and album version?
i second that
I third that. There are so many great tones you can go after. They were super creative and experimental in the studio
Let it be solo, Octopus' Garden, Sgt. Peppers, Lucy in the sky with diamonds, Polythene Pam/She came in throught the bathroom window, Get Back, Don't let me down and The end solo (For end the trilogy)
oh man now only thing I gotta do is to find a drummer who can play like Stewart Copeland!
TheZooropaBaby good luck!
FACTS
Stewart is a musician. NOT a drummer. Found that out the hard way.
Kevin Malone s a good bet
and someone who can sing like Sting lol
Nailed it!!!!
Thanks reverb! , would you do blur next please?
WOOHOO!!! (Sorry, but yeah that would be cool)
I been looking everywhere for an Every Step You Take tone tutorial thanks Reverb. Now I need to know Blur's Song 2 gritty tone
DouggieDaDucker don’t know much about blur, but I know he used a Proco rat (I think he might had 2)
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/_ijyk89uOCI/v-deo.html
Yeah rat. He was on that pedal show not too long ago.
DouggieDaDucker he played a proco rat, and if you watch the music video for song 2, you can see him step on the pedal, and the knob settings are visible in case you want to use them. However I'm pretty sure the sound comes from the bass being distorted, not the guitar.
Suggestion : Daryl Stuermer and Mike Rutherford and Hackett for G E N E S I S and with Phil as a solo artist (and in concert)
Great! Suggestion: Slowdive
Interesting that the drive is always after the modulation
Closest one yet. Bravo!
Great tones and even better scarf Bruh!
Nailed it
Would love to see a Lord Huron one, might be an interesting challenge.
Andy Gill Gang of Four.
here's my opinions
Walking on the moon: guitar 1 is close but it was a bit too bitey, needed to be a bit more squished for the guitar 1 part but the 2nd guitar part is very close
Hole in my life: phaser was a bit too slow but the tone was very close, you oughta sped the phaser up more to get it there!
Message in a bottle: might've been a bit too much chorus but it sounded nice and was close and props to the solo, that sounded great
Every Breath You Take: this was dead on! perhaps the most accurate you have gotten so far
Driven To Tears: very very close this time around, i love it! the solo was exceptional, i enjoyed it
Don't Stand Too Close To Me: once again a very close attempt of the song, very good
Can't Stand Losing You: it was a bit too bitey once again, if it were more softer you probably would've gotten there, but props to the solo, it sounded fine but i dunno for certain cos it was quite quiet on the recording
overall it was a great attempt! loved it
William Allison You must be Summers himself!
every little thing she does is magic?
Seeing the Plexi-Drive at the end of the chain often. Were other pedals in Loop?
I have up guitar when I couldn't stretch for every breath you take
Great performance
Excelente! Sonic youth next!!
My bloody valentine!
Hard to find a Tele with a humbucker with straight pole pieces in the neck position. Was this customized?
Super good
Modest Mouse please!
I need to put my small hands in a rack to stretch those 5 fret spanning open chords :o
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Do one on Greg Sage next please!
no message in a bottle ? the bridge section for i can't stand losing you is awesome
They did message in a bottle lol. 1:01
Rock Band Latinoamerican Soda Stereo please !!
On walking on the moon whats the settings on the Belle epoch tape echo?
Tele looks pretty
I would suggest to the camera to focus on pedals a little bit more, or simply to let the static image of them underneath the player. I would like to see precise settings as I hear the song.
Joe is the greatest man in the universe
What pickups are in that Tele? They donʻt look like Fender Wide Range Humbuckers.
Pearl Jam next please!!
is the dyna comp at the front or back of the chain?
Part two shall be required
(1:15) "Every Breath you Take": The guitar sounds great in the video.
But: I wonder, if using the "B-Output" from the Boss Chorus (-> no dry signal) was intentional, or not?
If yes, it seems quite special to me, as the chorus then acts more like a vibrato *
edit: *(or acts like nothing: -> no wet signal).
Anyways, It "might" have worked only because of the very slow speed of rate.
On the other hand: I don´t see i/o-cables here.
So it can just be a mistake in the foto, if the pedals have been set up afterwards again, for the shoot...
The effects of these effects are very close when you compare it with effects from other bands. I'd be interested in this hardware.
Just go wee woo wee woo
whats the use of the plexi drive??? it doesn't sound like its distorted.
One pedal is needed...EHX Deluxe Electric Mistress
1:52 This guitar sounds is so dreamy
does anyone know Andy's fx chain & settings on The Lazarus Heart ? his 'verbs, rev delays, tape delays ? does he use any Eventide outboard gear that he doesn't talk about ? somethings missing in the published info. The Helix & PodGo have some very close patches of some Police tracks but Lazarus Heart and Secret Journey demonstrate his most signature sound. thx to Reverb.
Remember he played some GR500 Roland guitars with synth sounds on ''Ghost in the machine". About Lazarus heart, I didn't Andy played on Sting's album "Nothing like the sun"...
@@BrunoCOHENstudio he played on that one track, check it out, it's one of his best...
So, he ran his delay (I’m guessing a tank) before his delay? I’m assuming the delay was a studio unit and not at his feet.
Here's some suggestions if like @reverb
Queen
(Any guitarist to Michael Jackson)
Santana
The Cranberries
Muse
The White Stripes
Radiohead Pt.2
The Killers
Two Door Cinema Club
Silversun Pickups
Eddie Van Halen
Metallica
If Andy gets one, Stewart Copeland needs to be done now!!
ua-cam.com/video/hcH2G5vO1Xg/v-deo.html
;)
I Get all these sounds with completely different set ups
If I can make some future suggestions:
- Green Day (Billie Joe Armstrong)
- The Black Keys (Dan Auerbach)
- Black Sabbath (Tony Iommi)
- AC/DC (Angus & Malcolm Young)
- ZZ Top (Billy Gibbons)
- Muse (Matt Bellamy)
Placebo potent pairings please
Seconded
Sound like Interpol. Please.
I wish you would have shared the tone controls
That delay on walking on the moon didn't even sound close honestly. Andy's guitar is just crazy with that pre amp and phase and everything. Hard to really get it to sound exactly like Andy's rig.
What guitar is this please
How to sound like Catherine Wheel please!
How to sound like Godspeed you black emperor please!
Nice videos, but the title says "How to sound like" you haven't showed how you got the sound!
Where's the Kevin ayers sounds bro???? He's best work tbh
Really nice but there’s no need to play all the chords with upstrokes on walking on the moon (common misconception). Check Andy S. he plays them all w/downstrokes
Where's Roxanne? Did she put up a red light?
Been practising "Every Breath" for over 20 years. Still can't make those chord stretches. I need a baby-neck guitar.
Rickenbacker 325
How to sound like my bloody valentine?
i thought that said Bullet For My Valentine for a second
now i am upsot :(
but jokes aside that'd be tough
That'd be cool! Fender jazzmaster and other stuff like that
Take all the pedals! All of them! Then take an EQ and pull out everything below 1000Hz. And on the bass, turn it down and turn it up around 300 Hz . That way, everything sounds shrill and, what little bass there is will be muddy.
Don't forget the vacuum cleaner. Vree Vroo!
Up
Rooooooooxanne?!
which mic to capture amp sound ?
