Initially formed as a punk band in 1977 London, The Police grew to become some of the most influential stalwarts of British rock before disbanding in 1986. In this edition of Legends of Tone, we take a look at the gear that inspired Andy Summers' inventive guitar playing -- from vintage Telecasters to warbly tape echoes -- and share our picks for the best modern gear to replicate his iconic, shimmering tone.

Worth mentioning that Summers’ tele was modified with more than just a humbucker. It also has a brass bridge, a phase switch and a boost circuit.
hey man. don't tell the world all the secrets of AS tone!
Don't forget Andy's brain and hands in the tone. You can't buy that from EHX.
Fender did release the replica series of that very guitar of Andy Summers, which Andy Summers brought along anywhere -instead of the real one, including on those famous The Police last Reunion Tour concerts. IIRC it was produced in limited numbers.
tone, of course also is in-the-ears, as much as it's anywheres else practic'ly.. are we really gettin' more or less control over it, i wonder,...
@@dr.know-it-all5148 It’s in his autobiography so not exactly a major secret!
Definitely an underrated guitarist, his playing in The Police was some next level stuff back then
Facts!
Underrated? During his time on the police (and after) he was on the cover of guitar magazines, tv shows, etc. Although he took some time off the limelight, he was never forgotten.
Eargasm!!! Great tones.
Similar to Alex Lifeson, I believe that Andy Summer's chorus sounds for the early Police era were a mix of the Electric Mistress AND the Boss CE-1. However the CE-1 can be a bit tricky when looking for modern substitutes as most interpretations leave out that all important (and extremely overlooked) preamp section. But if you just want a pedalboard friendly version of the Chorus circuit itself, the Boss CE-2w has a decent CE-1 mode included that will get in the ballpark.
Stereo Electric Mistress. . . I love this pedal. Inexpensive, and provides gorgeous stereo modulation. You're gonna need 2 amps. Buy it and you'll keep it 🌴
Probably my favorite guitarist. I love Rhodes, Dimartini, Lynch. But Summers was a guitarist on his on planet.
You nailed his sound. Congrats!
That’s one of the best ads for gear I’ve ever seen. Concise to the f’n point. Cheers.
There’s no evidence Andy used a CE-1 (to my knowledge). He DID, however, have a Roland Stereo Chorus amp, which the CE-1 circuit was taken from.
Different preamp and
Matsu chip between amp and CE1
Thanks for the video but the editing is a bit too much... I'm dizzy... Especially when there are things to read on the screen, you need to tone the editing down a bit...
Love synchronicity II. Cool video!
Awesome! Thank you!
Aw, cmon! Where's "When The World Is Running Down, You Make The Best Of What's Still Around"?
Synchronicity, Wow!! Very well played, what chain have you used? (In particular pedals) Thanks
We talk about the pedals used in our blog piece here: blog.zzounds.com/2018/06/16/legends-of-tone-andy-summers/
@@zZoundsMusic thanks, but that article don't say what distortion Justin use in sinchronicity, I wish know that please
I spoke with Justin and he said he used natural breakup of a Marshall Plexi.
This video is actually pretty cool
way better than reverb
Where is the Boss CE-1?
One thing to keep in mind is just how much Andy began relying on his red Strat. For instance, Every Breath You Take was recorded using his Strat.
Maybe worth noting that he used a Roland Jazz Chorus
Hi - check this out, Andy is not playing the message in a bottle riff how we all think! the evidence is on my page
the fact that you just suggested the STEREO mistress goes on to show how wrong and improvised this was. He used the analog one... now known as the XO deluxe version of the mistress. Go away please.
Agustin Lista Douchebag. The text clearly stated that Andy used the original analog model of the Electric Mistress and that the one in the video is the more recent digital version.
