North Texas here. Im the only house that has started to have a green-up. I did my scalp about 2 weeks ago. Pre emerg right after. My entire neighborhood still has 3-5" tall dormant Bermuda.
My neighbors in southern Texas lawns are all weeds. 6 to 12 inches tall. Brand new subdivision. They are some of the laziest homeowners I’ve ever run across. They cut the lawn about once a month. Never seen them put down fertilizer or weed killer. Never seen them pull a weed. Never seen them plant a flower.
Very much appreciate your videos even though I've been caring for Bermuda grass since I bought my first house back in 1977 in North Texas. Things have changed dramatically since then with all the new fertilizers and lawn care products. At 70, and now living in middle Tennessee I'm never too old to learn a thing or two and I appreciate your advice. I have the best Bermuda lawn in the neighborhood and am looking forward to even better results this summer. God Bless you and your Family.
Simple Lawn Guy from Copperas Cove Tx. Plenty of sun today, yard is really greening up. Already did a pre-scalp, applied pre-emergent a couple of weeks ago. Thinking about giving a mow tomorrow and applying some Bio-Stimulants.
Sounds like you’ve got it going on! I see we’re gonna get another cold front come through in a couple of weeks. Hopefully it’ll stay above freezing for y’all!
That’s crazy! I’m in Kentucky and most of our grass is fescue … I’m the fall it stops growing but it stays green all winter.. then in the spring it just starts growing again…
South Texas Corpus here. appreciate your videos man my lawn has really changed last couple years. Thinking about pulling money on allett stirling.... crazy cost but man I want a reel mower bad. Can't ever find a used green master! Keep up the work!
@@LawnInsider cancel that. It looks great with hefty. Just picked me up a greenmaster 1000... needs a little work since south texas but man these things are tanks!
What do you you keep your ph balance and n.p.k levels at where you live. I'm asking because I'm from San Antonio, Texas, and this coming spring will be my first time. I'll be working on my yard with bermuda grass and want to get ahead of the game before spring gets here.
You have nice lawn. My saint Augustine grass here in Texas didn't do well is really patchy. Some spots are just dirt now. I'm seeing a lot of the saint Augustine. That's very dried up like a Vine but still connecting. How can I get the grass to spots become healthy thick and green
Start off with a good watering schedule and regular mows once the season gets started. Then once we hit May, adjust from there. More than likely if you have some really bad thin spots (and shade isn't the issue) than you could probably invest in a Pro Plugger to transplant some healthy grass to those weaker areas to spur along the filling in process.
My lawn is totally screwed up here in North Texas. Didn’t get pre emergent down early enough and have had ridiculous amounts of weeds which I’ve pulled. What would you do for serious rehab on Bermuda? I’m gonna scalp it today.
I would put out a blanket herbicide first. Kill as many weeds as possible. Mow a lot afterwards. That alone should make a big difference. Then worry about feeding it.
No, but I do on occasion. Bifen is probably about the heaviest thing I’ve applied. Everything I use is labeled safe for children and pets as long as you’re using it as directed.
RHETT! What's up buddy? Glad to see your back doing vids again. Glad to see and hear your family is doing great. I've committed before on your channel. My name is Mike. I life here in Central Texas (Austin) area. So far I have mowed 1x so far. Front yard of course but my backyard is still in dormancy but have noticed Poa, not so much in the front yard but definitely in the backyard along with other weeds that started to germinate very rapidly over the last few weeks. Now once I scalp per say and then do another round of pre-emergent. How long should I wait from pre-emergent to straight fertilizer and given the weather pattern as well?
I been watching your channel. I love it that’s my goal for my lawn. My house have new grass cause my house is new build? Now I’m seeing weeds what do you recommend? I’m here in Hutto Texas. Thanks
Looking great! Tifway 419 in San Marcos. Did a pre-scalp last week (applied Lesco Stonewall 0-0-7 in mid-January due to warm temps and October 16th prior to that) and applied Elemental Sulphur to lower pH and Humichar...and planning to scalp in the next week or two. I will then apply a 13-13-13 fertilizer and either Pendimethalin or Dithiopyr (Dimension) in late March/early April. Got a great deal on a SunJoe scarifier/dethatcher last year and was planning on using the scarifier to pull up some dead matter...should I even do that after a scalp? BTW, awesome tree ring...I don't recall you doing a video about that. Any plans to shoot a video of how you did that? Thanks.
A lot of folks have asked for a video explaining the tree rings. There’s a chance I’ll make one at some point this season! I’ve scalped and dethatched the same weekend before. I always though the lawn came back beautifully after a good beating, but it definitely isn’t something you absolutely need to do.
Water frequently until it’s established. Once it’s established you can taper down the frequency, but increase the volume you’re watering every time. Don’t use any sort of pre-emergent until Fall. Post emergent is fine once the grass is established. Until that point though, cut, water, and feed.
So I'm not from Texas and im.a yr in my home I love taking care of my lawn but we inherited a huge weed bed and it is all my front yard which is killing me. How can I get my lawn looking good and we already early may do I have a chance 😢
@Lawn Insider thank you for your video tips. I wasn't used to this texas heat, so I'm learning a lot about getting that green lawn, especially being a corner house. I gotta stand out, lol.
great information. i put down pre emergency on February 13 . I scalp on March 1, i am south San Antonio texas . my lawn is 40 percent green . my question is can i i put down 32-0-10 fertilizer . now or is too early or wait until Spring thanks .
I personally wouldn’t put down a full app of that analysis right now, although I don’t think we’ll be getting another freeze. It’s fine to throw some down though. Maybe just do an app at half rate.
In SA and scalped this past weekend and applied pre emergent. About 70% green up already. Do you recommend applying fert yet with N? I have a few bags of milorganite left over from last season. Thanks
how short do you cut that lawn , i keep hearing i need to go down to 1" but i keep getting scare that it will be to low and the Texas heat might mess up the lawn.
I mow at around 1/2” all season long. The yard will be ok as long as you can water it. If you have drought restrictions it can get a little dicey, but that’s really regardless of height.

I’ve got to stop watching your vids because they make me want to get out there and mow… but I just mowed 2 days ago!
Here in NTX, my front yard is 50/50 warming up Bermuda and other half weeds. 😅 All my neighbors are still dormant with their 3-4 inch heights.
Sounds like you’ve already got a leg up on the competition lol you can kill the weeds later.

As far as first fertilizer of the season which do I use as far as numbers I use yard mastery so start with Stress or flagship
You’re good either way in my opinion. I personally would save the stress blend for a time later in the summer when you’re lawn is really stressed.

Is it too late to put down pre emergent in central texas?
Never too late really. You just won’t prevent anything that’s already germinated.
In SA and scalped this past weekend and applied pre emergent. About 70% green up already. Do you recommend applying fert yet with N? I have a few bags of milorganite left over from last season. Thanks
Yes sir you can lay some N down. It looks like the temps will dip a bit in the 2 week, but not enough to do any damage. As of now anyway.
Do you service your reel mower yourself or take it in to be serviced?
I do most of it myself, but I get a grind on the reel at a golf course.
Distracted by the shirt. Craving a slurpee now.
Yes sirrr lol
Good time to recommend soil sample tests for viewers?
I personally won’t get one this spring, but if you haven’t put any fertilizer down yet this season you could definitely get your soil tested.
how short do you cut that lawn , i keep hearing i need to go down to 1" but i keep getting scare that it will be to low and the Texas heat might mess up the lawn.
A good rule of thumb is to keep it as short as possible till summer. Then go up 1/2"-1". Then shorter in the fall
