Professional Bodyshop RUINS Classic Truck Hood. Can We Fix it? 1953 Chevy Kustom

  • This is part 2 of sectioning the hood on our tasty Chicken Truck, the radical kustom 1953 Chevy pickup. Thanks to old collision damage and bad decisions, the project becomes much more complicated than anticipated and I end up having to splice two hoods together. Also, several critical mistakes are made. The hood becomes a warped mess because I do not weld it together properly, but we fix it anyways using cheap hand tools

When my Dad built his '37 Chevy Ute hotrod, he welded the top section of the hood (originally two parts) into one. He also had to add reinforcements to the bottom side to keep it from flopping around. He did not have your skills, and had to use a bit of "product". Can confirm, it does weigh approximately 7000 lbs...

You know what would improve the parts of the video where you're gesturing with your left hand, and holding the camera with your right? A chicken sock puppet. Maybe you could set it on fire? A flaming, smoldering chicken sock puppet would be awesome. Other than that, I'm enjoying this series a lot. Also, thanks for taking the time to talk about metal shrinkage and the importance of properly fitting patch panels--I needed to hear that.

I am definitely looking forward to the next video. Thanks for taking the snow while we got the rain. Mighty nice of you. I used to work at an auto parts place and I used to clear the snow by piling it up in the bed so we could have traction for the rear wheels. It worked great until one of the geniuses that used to work with us parked it inside and flooded the store. They now work for the government so we are safe now. Anyhow that hood is awesome. Take care.

The truck is really starting to look great. I know there is a longish road ahead, but the journey is well started. The snowstorm in Sask made the news all the way to Ontariario. The weather is so screwed up lately, one day I'm in the yard raking, the next I'm shovelling the same area, and a few days later a monsoon. So much for the snow and good ridance. I'm looking forward to the next segment. Just got a new mistress in the house, I had forgotten how entertaining kittens can be. Purrs like a model A ford.

I know everyone has their level of acceptance of finished metal work but yours is so much higher than mine. Man, I would love it if I could achieve what you have done on that hood. The weld seam looks amazing from here! I have always wanted a shrinking disk and glad I waited because I would have got a cheaper 4" but hearing you talk about the 7 and how much it moves the metal makes me want to get the 7. Be excited and proud of that finish work, it look amazing. Keep it up!

Mon I'm digging the chicken truck build. It's cool to mock it up to get a visual of where your going with it.
You can even make your own GRILL if you find something that is chrome and looks untrusting for a grill. I've seen a Camreo bumper used as a grill.
When I had my 1968 Toyota I made a 1951 Buick grill fit I shorten it. That's when I had lots of grills I pulled out of a junk yard in the 80s other wise they were going to get crushed for scrap metal.

Great recovery on the hood seams. That grill looks cool and I'm sure it will turn out fine. Have you ever tried switching hands when welding to keep the weld direction the same from side to side? Not sure if it would make any difference or not on gauge material but maybe for body positioning.
