  • In this episode we are back working on the radical custom 1953 Chevy Truck. The plan is to cut the cab and doors in half, remove 3" of material from the width of the body and then weld it back together.

Why look at what he does with the same stuff we have in our garage I mean no disrespect to the guys who have all the trick stuff but Kyle fixes the metal with metal when possible and that is what most of us are trying to do I admit none of my body work is going to finish with high build and a block but watching him helps us understand how to fix what we have. Brilliant approach with the door skins and detaching them, cutting the section from the middle of door frame then re-attaching the skin so that the excess outer metal ends up at the bottom. No big cut and weld across the exterior panel.

Nice to see you doing some custom work and with an explanation of how it’s done. That cab section was just done so beautifully, that was a step back in time to old school custom work. Two things Gene Winfield says every day is a school day because you’re always learning, and no school like the old school. Now it makes sense why seeing cars section and the cut out areas were in different places. They were looking for the top of the crown on the panel, your plumb line was a good demonstration. I really loved this video, thanks. Later

Kyle, what a satisfying episode! It's clear you were pleased with the result of the doors--me too! I think you are onto something with the classical music--we are watching the creation of art, the music seemed appropriate. What you need is a helper, an Igor who can offer a third hand or help move cumbersome objects. Ideally it would be a teenager who hates school and was interested in the project. Fifty years ago such a kid would be available but they have all been lost now. If I lived closer I might volunteer.

Kyle there is a guy called Bad Chad on YT. He does a lot of chopping taking after his mentor Gene Winfield. However he does not possess your skill or ability to plan. He just lurches from one crisis to the next and has destroyed several survivor vehicles in doing so. Here you have taken something from scrap and are making something wonderfully different. Another guy on here from Vice Grip Garage has just rescued a 1950 Chevy Styleline fitted with a Chevy V8 back in the day. I would restore that car to its V8 heyday Scott Newstead also has a mild custom Chevy fitted with Cadillac "sore thumbs" tail lights. It looks great and I wish he would restore that coupe. I envy your skill

You may want to look at 46 - 48 Chevy cars as they had that type of swoop on the sides. It will give you an idea on how to work the front door swing and pivot clearance.

Good to see you having fun! I can't believe how much better those doors look with the 3-4 inches removed. Thank you for sharing your first order plans with your walk around.I suspect you will find out why you don't see a lot of fade-away fender mods as soon as you start working the details of the door hinge pivot axis location. The new door chine is going to want to sneak in behind the front fender trailing edge when the door is opened. I witnessed another Canadian UA-camr spend what seemed like two weeks before figuring out a similar 3D solution. Thank You!

Lots of customizers did fade aways on a variety of vehicles in the 1940's and 50's...of course people were smarter back then, but I'm confident I'll figure it out
The plan is to mock everything up with a wire form buck and paper before committing to the final shape and door gap in metal

When you said 'Intermission' my mind went right to 'The Holy Grail'....
The period correct approach using various GM parts/pieces for this Kustom is something I totally agree with.
Anyone with deep pockets can put a 'bellybutton' ride together by simply ordering a ton of parts and bolting them together.
In my opinion.... it takes a heck of a lot more talent, imagination, and craftsmanship to build what you are doing WITHOUT spending 10's of thousands of dollars.
    Keep up the great work!!!

I would just say that now I understand why did you abandon those other doors. I just wanted to say that this is a very interesting content. Good luck with the rest of the project.
