Sweet dreams was a reaction to the way they were treated by record executives when trying to get or renew their contracts, hence the ‘chorus’ of “some of them want to use you, some of them want to be used by you, some of them want to abuse you, some of them want to be abused” as a general description of executive / artist relations in the early 1980’s when the “casting couch” was as much a part of getting signed as an artist as it was in the film industry in places.

Annie is a very accomplished musician on her own. She was literally weeks away from graduating from the Royal Academy of Music where she studied the flute, piano and harpsichord when she dropped out to play those instruments in bands. By the way, Dave long ago credited her with writing most of the lyrics to all their songs. He joked that every time she borrowed his coat, when he got ir back the pockets would be filled with napkins, gum wrappers, etc., with lyric ideas she had scribbled on them. In a biography he credits her with spontaneously coming up with the lyrics to “Sweet Dreams” while listening to some synth music he had recorded on a reel to reel. The tinkling you hear when she sings “hold your head up, keep your head up” is actually both of them tapping on milk bottles.
My favorite song by far is “Would I Lie To You”. She lets it rip in this song !! Also, all the horns in it is awesome!!! Hope you check this out to see the range she has is unbelievable.
That is my favorite, too! You can get down to that one. Not the type of dance that is cool now, which I call "Simulated sex on a dance floor", but foot stompin' hands up, rocking around a floor. So good.
Another great one for her range is “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” - and you can’t go wrong with Stevie Wonder playing Harmonica on it!
Annie Lennox is an absolute legend. There was such a huge amount and sheer scale of talent back then which we simply have not got anymore. But music never dies and will always stay. You guys rock, awesome video
Annie put out a solo album “Diva” In it her voice does ALL singing & backups. It was groundbreaking for the time. React to Walking on Broken Glass. In fact entire album is 1st class as is she.
I didn’t realize just how amazing her voice is until I saw Michelle Chamuel sing “Why” on The Voice. It struck me that she was the first person I’d seen perform an Annie Lennox song…then I started really thinking about Annie’s songs and I realized that I’d never really LISTENED to it. I may have been listening to her songs, but I wasn’t paying attention to how incredible the singing was. I realized that the reason I’d never seen someone performing her music before is because it would be very difficult to do what Annie does vocally.
Sadly there were musical differences, and after this massive hit the cows didn't stay part of the band, and they split off to form their own group, 'Eurythmilks' to produce something fresh.
This song literally defined part of the the 80s in terms of music, style, fashion, art...it was impossible to miss. The influence is timeless. People who never even listened to techno or rock or even western music, half a world away, heard this song on repeat (I know - I experienced this traveling). Believe me...it was huge. It still is.
If you were a teenager to early 20's when this came out in 1983 it is hard to describe how mind blowing this song and video was. I remember the absolute buzz in college with people constantly chattering in class about "Did you see the video with the girl with orange hair!". The singing, the andogynous look, the style was just absolutely riveting. I remember some of the richer students who had one of those new fangled VCRs and would get a copy from MTV and they'd have watch parties where they'd just put this video on endless loop. Like I said the buzz was crazy.
I suggest "Would I Lie to You" and "Here Comes the Rain Again" from the Eurythmics era. Here is a live performance of "Would I Lie to You" from 87. ua-cam.com/video/omJeStRoo_E/v-deo.html
In the 80's Annie really stood out as so different. Women didn't wear such a short hair cut & so colorful, only Cindi Lauper was rockin' crazy hair color. Her wardrobe was completely opposite of what female artists were wearing (Cindi Lauper, Madonna..etc). This is such a great 80's song. Marilyn Manson also recorded this song some years back & I really like his version too. So glad you liked this!
Yes, she was the first truly “weird” artist I remember seeing as a child (Boy George followed shortly thereafter), and I remember being fascinated by her orange hair. Friday Night Videos for the win! Haha.
More hits from Eurythmics: - Who's That Girl - It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back) - Would I Lie To You - Missionary Man - Beethoven (I Love To Listen To) - I Need A Man and the anthem they recorded with Aretha Franklin - Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves
Don't forget to give her partner, Dave Stewart, his proper respect. He produced their records, and was largely responsible for their sound. Her voice is epic!
The video was inspired by a Fellini film -Juliet of the Spirits - the idea was to put things together that shouldn't be together, in a surreal way - here we have technology and nature. Eurythmics stated that when they put the cow in the boardroom it was out of place but when they put the technology in nature it seemed to fit. You should try the video for their songs Beethoven (I love to listen to) and Love is Stranger - Annie took on different personas and played with characters. Infamously she performed Sweet Dreams at the Grammys dressed as a man and had to provide MTV with her birth certificate to prove she was female after the station watched the Love is a Stranger video where she removes her wig and thought she was a male transvestite.
Check out Who's that Girl, Here's Comes the Rain Again, and Missionary Man. She also sang the bittersweet In To the West from the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King soundtrack.
Eurythmics are amazing, and they have almost as many sounds as Annie has looks. Whether it's 'Here Comes The Rain Again,' 'There Must Be An Angel,' and 'I Saved The World Today,' or 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),' 'Missionary Man,' and 'Love Is A Stranger,' they're great.
I remember watching a music awards night where Laurin Hill and Whitney Houston were pegged as two divas competing for the title of ultimate diva, they sang their hearts out and were great. Special guest performance from Annie Lennox, effortlessly destroyed the both of them in about 5 seconds flat.
@@helenatyeo6840 I don't remember the name because here in Australia, at the time we had a cable box called Austar (now Foxtel) which had an MTV show presenters showing performances from an award show. But I only got to see Lauren Hill and Whitney Houston performing and later I watch Annie Lennox perform. The presenters said that along comes Annie Lennox as a guest performance and she blew away some if not all the other performers.
Here is the live video you all are talking about, Annie Lennox performing her song Why from her Diva album! So good! ua-cam.com/video/2vrIpHNxY_M/v-deo.html
In the 2000's (in my 20's) I guess I was working at a shoe store (journeys) in a mall and we had a music track that played in the background, and this little teenager was like "OMG I heard this GIRL singing this marilyn manson song and it was so lame".
I remember the first time I heard it. I had my radio on at work and a coworker and I looked at each other in shock when we heard Marilyn Manson's version.
Having lived with these songs for nearly 40 years it's easy to forget the impact they had when they first came out. Watching your reactions helps me remember how new and groundbreaking they were.
Annie Lennox is timeless, she's still producing quality recordings today, in her early 60s. Androgeny was a thing back in the 80s and she cracked it. She's a stunning looking woman still. Also, she's been very vocal, in a positive way, around HIV/AIDS. She is quite simply sublime. Best of luck with the birth of your baby. Check out her 'Here Comes the Rain Again'.
Annie Lennox is one of the most unique pop divas of all time. Eurythmics had so many great songs it's hard to narrow them down! Check out "Love is a Stranger", "Would I Lie to You?" and "Here Comes the Rain Again". Annie also had some spectacular solo songs, such as "Why" and (my personal fave), "Little Bird". And also: MAZEL TOV!! ;)
I'm a big 80's fan and this song comes on regularly, when my daughter was little she miss heard the lyrics and was singing cream cheese are made of these , she's 15 now, and still tease her whenever this plays. Another fantastic English/Scottish group, Annie Lenox is Scottish. Check out Annie Lennox walking on broken glass, if you really want to listen to her voice properly
If you want more Annie Lennox, I highly suggest ‘Into the West’ from The Lord of the Rings. One of the most powerful songs I can think of and her voice is enchanting.
Annie Lennox is amazing. I’m blessed to have been born in 1974. I was 9 years old when this song came out. It was MTV’s first year on TV. So music videos were new, and hooked us. It’s hard to imagine her look. Because it would even fit today. This was 1983!! I love watching these videos because I’m glad people are discovering music even now
@@carolinedoyle7236 yeah and how we took it for granted. If only we had known we were living through the greatest era for popular music to date, and maybe even all time.
Try 1. Carly Simon: “Jesse” such an (underplayed and underrated song)“He’s so vain”, “You Belong to Me”, “coming around again”…. So many great songs 2. Carol King “so far away”, “I feel the earth move”, “it’s too late”, “will you still love me tomorrow“
I recently had to re-hear this song. I saw the title somewhere and said, "Jesse? I miss this?" Come to find out I've listened to this since it came out but must of never heard it say Jesse. What the hell was I hearing? Great Song. Everyone knows a Jesse.
Annie and Dave Stewart, guitarist, used to be a couple around this time. She's a powerhouse vocalist. They had many hits. As mentioned awhile back please react to, "Love is a stranger", and "Right by your side". Also her duet with Aretha Franklin, Sisters are doing it for themselves. The 80s sisterhood theme!
Why? by Annie Lennox is terrific and moving. Also why not try 10,000 Maniacs What's the Matter Here or Like the Weather featuring the sublime Natalie Merchant?
I loved her when Annie was in The Tourists pre Eurythmics, then this video came out & completely blew my mind. I've adored her in all her musical incarnations ever since ♥️
Anne is like a female Bowie or Freddy Mercury -- chimerical, always trying something new, with an amazing voice. One of these Female Fridays, you might want to try "Wonder" by Natalie Merchant.
As a kid who graduated high school in 1984, Annie Lennox was beyond amazing. She may not have started the "Androgynous movement", but she was the one who brought it to American kids. She challenged the ideas of what women were supposed to look like at the time.
Her voice is pure and iconic and with a flawless range. Some brave souls have tried to cover her songs and in my opinion just can't compare. The only ones that 'succeed' are when they come out with a completely new arrangement and don't even attempt to replicate her sound. My opinion.
This was groundbreaking when it came out...not just the music but also how Annie presented herself...in the early 80's women's hair was still in the Farrah Fawcett feathering...
If you want to go for a different woman's look in post-punk leaning toward goth in the early 1980s, there would be Siouxsie and the Banshees. While John McGeoch was my favourite guitarist with the Banshees, after he left his spot was taken by Robert Smith (of The Cure) for a while. "Spellbound" would be a good song to try.
Annie's non-lyric vocalizing in the background is hauntingly moving. You have no lyrics to get in the way of someone expressing themselves but you get the emotion that it brings to the song.
Other Eurythmics to hear: "Missionary Man", "Would I Lie to You?", "Here Comes the Rain Again", "I saved the world"! Annie is so good and I think she is the real queen of the 80s! They probably had a big hit every year of the 80s just about!
My name is Kathi. I'm Nathan's grandmother. I'm 70. You two are incredible! I've never subscribed to anything before I found you. You will have beautiful, smart and talented babies. I've been binge watching you for two days. I love Female Friday. Long may you wave.
Ironic that you mentioned a Marilyn Manson look since he did a fairly decent cover of the song...in his style of course. For more of this lady you should check out Missionary Man (I think that's the title)
Some songs are just so damn good that they immediately transcend their genre/time period with ease, and will thrive for decades to come. This is one of those songs, by far...
I only realize how great the music was from the 60s and 70s and 80s when I compare it to today. I forget that talent was expected and taken for granted. These artists are LEGEND!
OK guys, you want a weird one? PJ Harvey: "Down by the Water." It's creepy, haunting, tells a story, and her voice is so different. Just something for your ears to soak in.
You can't possibly be serious with this comment. CocoRosie - Lemonade just begins to scratch the surface of wierd and unusual. I'd only bring up CocoRosie to gage if I need to back off or hit the gas. What you got next for unusual? Kate Bush???
Another great song by Eurythmics is "Would I Lie to You?" "Don't Go" by Yaz featuring the amazing Alison Moyet is another Synth-Pop classic. Or if you really want to go for something unique try "Never Say Never" by Romeo Void (Featuring Debora Iyall on vocals. But beware, in the good version, there is an F-bomb). Also, you'll have to check out The Motels featuring Martha Davis, Take The "L" and Quarterflash, "Harden My Heart" or "Find another Fool".
I’ve been pushing for Yazoo forever. They were pioneers in so many ways. Such an incredible band story. I was lucky enough to see their Reconnected tour back in 2008 in NYC. I prefer Situation, though. That song has been sampled by so many artists. Alison’s laugh is even in “Macarena”.
A similar group for Female Friday would be Alison Moyet of Yazoo - a few great songs are Situation, and Don't Go (both of these were standards in early 90's dance clubs) or Only You (soft and melodic). Alison has a killer voice, and Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode/Erasure does some of his best work as a vanguard of synth-pop.
Annie is a fantastic artist and Dave Stewart is a great producer and artist as well. I was lucky enough to see them perform as the Eurythmics once and I was amazed. Such a great show.
The Eurythmics were just one of those bands that RULED MTV back in the day. "Sweet Dreams" was so beautifully haunting - I couldn't help but want to hear more. Of all the songs that came after this one, my other favorite Eurythmics song was "Would I Lie To You". I hope you'll react to that song if you haven't already.
Annie Lennox is a Diva. If you're a Lord of the Rings fan she performs the song Into the West; a beautiful, haunting melody. You have to listen to "Why".
"Sweet dreams are made of cheese. Who am I to dis a bree..." Seriously, though - this was their first big hit. I remember seeing this video my senior year in high school, and it was SO incredible; so different from most of what was out there.
StILL waiting on Linda Ronstadt singing “ someone to lay down beside me.” It is the BEST. Amber, you will LOVE it. Some pretty piano for J. PlEASE, please please. she was the #1 female in the 70’s. Nobody could touch her. Her back up band eventually became the Eagles. I could go on and on about her. Another good tune by her is “ You’re no good.”
This song never gets old because it’s so true! Another great British group! The Eurythmics were one of the best groups of the eighties! Annie’s voice is amazing and she went on to have a successful solo career! ❤️❤️
The Eurythmics were an amazing edition to the sounds of the 80's. I highly recommend listening to her solo work as well. No More I Love You's, Walking on Broken Glass, Love Song for a Vampire, and my favorite will always be COLD - brings chills and goosebumps just typing the title. - OH, I almost forgot her duet with The Queen of Soul - Sisters Are Doing it for Themselves with Aretha Franklin.
Love is a Stranger is one of my fav's. She was a legend. She was VERY avant garde in my day as a young teen girl. She blew us away. She is a true class act!!!
I was at a concert in London in the earlyish '80s, I forget who I'd gone to see, just before the main act Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart appeared on stage, played Sweet Dreams and left. That was it but a truly iconic three or four minutes, it was the launch of the Sweet Dreams album, which made them into global superstars. And the rest, as they say, is history.
A fantastic female 80's band is Roxette. I can recommend two of their songs as starters: "Listen To Your Heart" and "The Look." D.H.T. did a fantastic cover of "Listen To Your Heart" about 15 years ago. The lead singer for that cover was also a female: Edmée.
I actually met them just before they broke out. They were on their way to a gig in San Bernardino, stuck with a leaking water hose at the Union 76 at the junction of I-15 Hgwy 18. The station was out of their hose, but I was able to cut it and stretch it out enough to reconnect it. They seemed real nice, but it was hard to communicate as they didn't speak English very well. My ex wasn't really happy with it all though as Marie was looking quite good in those tight leather pants...
I tell you what. I am 54 and look back on the 80s so fondly!! MTV brought us music 24/7......but it was the VIDEOS that took music to a new level back then!! Just as UA-cam has for today's times. I am SOOOOOOOO DANG ON HAPPY to see you both enjoying music that has been part of the soundtrack to my life.
This is one of my top five favorite songs, and Annie Lennox is so amazing. I saw her in concert once, probably one of the best performances I have ever seen. She was generous, artistic, responsive to the crowd, and so genuine-singing from her heart the whole night. The fact that she sang every track on that album-no backup singers, just her beautiful voice-is another feat of vocal range and richness that is rare in performers.
This song is even more amazing when you realize they recorded it in their tiny home studio. Struggling musicians who made it happen. And her voice! Like an angel. Amazing.
This reminds me: y’all should totally check out the song “Voices Carry” by Til’ Tuesday. Interesting video and such a classic 80’s song too! I think y’all will dig it!
Additionally, it was originally written to a woman, but Aimee Mann was forced to change the subject to a man because you couldn't be bi or a lesbian on the radio back then. Epic Records apparently wouldn't allow that in 1985, but the 1984 lyrics were different. That's why the whole "Melissa Etheridge" thing was a giant career-ending blowup in the 90s and she practically disappeared from the radio.
This song and Here Comes the Rain Again blew everyone's minds when it came out. The perfect MTV songs. It's hilarious that you mentioned Marilyn Manson because he does an awesome cover of this.
I was incredibly lucky to see the Eurythmics live in a New York nightclub called The Ritz shortly after this album came out. She performed on a raised catwalk that went the length of the room. The word phenomenal is not enough to describe how great it was. I have been an Annie Lennox fan ever since. What a voice!
I'm hooked to you guys!! I'm older and watching yawl enjoy what I enjoyed and danced to in the past makes me smile. Make memories. The Eurythmics, rock! Annie Lennox ~ Why.
Try the Cranberry’s, The GoGo’s, Heart, etc. There are so many wonderful women singers/bands out there. One of personal favorites is Stevie Nick’s. Whether she is solo or with Fleetwood Mac. Also, you can’t forget Janis Joplin or Patsy Cline. Ugh, there are so many to choose from. I love your show. Keep it up. ❤️
Another female vocalist worth a listen is Amy Mann of Til Tuesday and the song Voices Carry is quite haunting and she owns it! If you haven't already heard it!
She’s a shapeshifter kinda like David Bowie was. Always evolving, always different and ALWAYS exquisitely artistic and dramatic. She’s still doing it, too. ❤️❤️❤️
I think that may be a stretch to compare Annie to Bowie, in my opinion Bowie is peerless.
American broadcasters banned them originally for their first video Love Is A Stranger due to Annie Lennox's androgynous image...

That is my favorite, too! You can get down to that one. Not the type of dance that is cool now, which I call "Simulated sex on a dance floor", but foot stompin' hands up, rocking around a floor. So good.
My favorite!!!!!
Love is a stranger is awesome too
Another great one for her range is “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” - and you can’t go wrong with Stevie Wonder playing Harmonica on it!
The video for that is a good time too🙂
Annie Lennox is an absolute legend. There was such a huge amount and sheer scale of talent back then which we simply have not got anymore. But music never dies and will always stay. You guys rock, awesome video
The total amount of talent in the world doesnt change. Today it's just harder to find
Phenomenal album, with some real kick-ass songs, as well as beautiful ballads. Once the CD is in my car stereo, it sometimes stays for 10 replays!
Little Bird, from that album, is good too, and the video is a hoot.
Not many people talk about them, but I really like Stay By Me and Primitive, too.
didnt she sing the "Vampire love song" for bram stockers dracula movie?
@@finex666 She did, indeed. Love Song For A Vampire.
Sadly there were musical differences, and after this massive hit the cows didn't stay part of the band, and they split off to form their own group, 'Eurythmilks' to produce something fresh.
Just about pissed myself Diddy. Top stuff.
Their last album was kind of sour.
Thanks for the laugh...and I'm from the dairy state.
Lol!! Hilarious!!!😂😂😂
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! 😂😂😂😂
Yes they pushed boundaries in so many ways, and definitely left their mark
I suggest "Would I Lie to You" and "Here Comes the Rain Again" from the Eurythmics era. Here is a live performance of "Would I Lie to You" from 87. ua-cam.com/video/omJeStRoo_E/v-deo.html
Yes! My favorite is Here Comes the Rain Again!
YES YES YES! These are all great songs for you to react to. I love: Would I Lie to You, Here Comes the Rain, and Broken Glass
No
They'd like the rock of "Would I Lie To You".
Annie totally struts her stuff in "Would I Lie." Love it!
If you want to hear The Eurythmics really rock out, try "Would I Lie to You?" one of their biggest hits.
Or "Missionary Man" that kicks some serious butt as well.
@@thorsluter7835 Both are great suggestions !
I can't sit still when that is on.
Yes!!!!
One of my favorite Eurythmics song and video.
Canadian here. Annie Lennox is queen. QUEEN.
Yes, Marilyn Manson version.
Yes, she was the first truly “weird” artist I remember seeing as a child (Boy George followed shortly thereafter), and I remember being fascinated by her orange hair. Friday Night Videos for the win! Haha.
More hits from Eurythmics:
- Who's That Girl
- It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back)
- Would I Lie To You
- Missionary Man
- Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)
- I Need A Man
and the anthem they recorded with Aretha Franklin - Sisters Are Doin' It For Themselves
...and Annie's solo masterpiece Walking on Broken Glass.
There must be an Angel
Also 'Here Comes the Rain Again' and 'Thorn In My Side'.
Who's that girl..such an 80s iconic song.my fav
"Love is a Stranger (In an open car)" and for creep factor, "Love Song for a Vampire." Please and thank you.
The series of split personalities videos are so good, Beethoven is one of my favourites. :)
Thanks for dropping the history on this, well done 👍 They were amazing.
For the American Music Awards or Grammy Awards she was dressed as Elvis and sang this .
@@matthewdrake4385 I remember Annie called that persona "Earl". 😆
Check out Who's that Girl, Here's Comes the Rain Again, and Missionary Man. She also sang the bittersweet In To the West from the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King soundtrack.
Indefinitely endorse the recommendations for H.C.R.A. and M.M.
Also Would I Lie To You? and When Tomorrow Comes.
That woman's voice is a treasure for any of us to be graced to hear. Annie Lennox is the diva of all divas in secular music
Some more favorites:
"Would I Lie to You"
"Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves"
"Missionary Man"
"Here Comes the Rain Again"
" I Need a Man"
Yes Missionary man .
Yes. All of those songs, plus her solo song "Why?" is also amaaaaazing.
my favourite thorn in my side
Love Is a Stranger. By far my favorite track in their catalog. The video, vocals, and music are amazing.
I remember watching a music awards night where Laurin Hill and Whitney Houston were pegged as two divas competing for the title of ultimate diva, they sang their hearts out and were great.
Special guest performance from Annie Lennox, effortlessly destroyed the both of them in about 5 seconds flat.
I remember watching that and laughed my head off because Annie Lennox didn't need any introduction.
@@jodiepalmer2404 what was the awards called ..wanna see that 🙂
@@helenatyeo6840 I don't remember the name because here in Australia, at the time we had a cable box called Austar (now Foxtel) which had an MTV show presenters showing performances from an award show. But I only got to see Lauren Hill and Whitney Houston performing and later I watch Annie Lennox perform. The presenters said that along comes Annie Lennox as a guest performance and she blew away some if not all the other performers.
@@jodiepalmer2404 thanks for replying ...i tried to look it up with no luck either ..but thanks anyway .🙂
Here is the live video you all are talking about, Annie Lennox performing her song Why from her Diva album! So good! ua-cam.com/video/2vrIpHNxY_M/v-deo.html
This song is so good that even MariLyn Manson covered it. Annie's voice is legendary!
Yes! It's so funny that Jordan said that about the video!
See her FB page. And her daughter has started a singing career.
Her voice was the Adele voice of the 80s. It gripped you.
She won an Oscar in 2004, for 'Into the West' , from The Lord of the Rings.
And also: MAZEL TOV!! ;)
While I'm on it, I'll just drop Garbage as a possible Female Friday band. "Stupid Girl" is their best. Shirley Manson is a rock goddess.
The Eurythmics were such an iconic 80's group. Annie Lennox has such a great voice & is so recognizable.
Sweet Dreams are made of cheese. Who am I to dis a bree😁
If you want more Annie Lennox, I highly suggest ‘Into the West’ from The Lord of the Rings. One of the most powerful songs I can think of and her voice is enchanting.
OMG YES! I always cry at the end of the Trilogy with that amazingly emotional lullaby.
@@LJMiho It's definitely a tearjerker. Love Song For A Vampire is great, too.
She is fantastic in that song!!
Absolutely one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and Annie's voice is nothing short of angelic.
The first time I heard it I was like that's Annie then double checked because I was doubted by a family member. Her voice is so distinctive.
Annie Lennox is amazing.
I’m blessed to have been born in 1974. I was 9 years old when this song came out. It was MTV’s first year on TV. So music videos were new, and hooked us.
It’s hard to imagine her look. Because it would even fit today. This was 1983!!
I love watching these videos because I’m glad people are discovering music even now
This was one of the first music videos I saw as a kid.
I was 10 and had a mystical type crush on this weird singing woman
I was born in 77... Some of the best music was in the 80's
Me too, born in 74, we had the best music growing up at that time 😀
@@carolinedoyle7236 yeah and how we took it for granted. If only we had known we were living through the greatest era for popular music to date, and maybe even all time.
Try
1. Carly Simon: “Jesse” such an (underplayed and underrated song)“He’s so vain”, “You Belong to Me”, “coming around again”…. So many great songs
2. Carol King “so far away”, “I feel the earth move”, “it’s too late”, “will you still love me tomorrow“
I have the 45 single of Jessie by Carly. I really enjoyed it back in the day
you cannot over play Carly Simon. Also Carole King, especially when she writes for Aretha. my lord!
I recently had to re-hear this song. I saw the title somewhere and said, "Jesse? I miss this?" Come to find out I've listened to this since it came out but must of never heard it say Jesse. What the hell was I hearing? Great Song. Everyone knows a Jesse.
Another Carly song, Let The River Run. That one is heartbreaking because of the Towers in the background.
Both of them are great
Annie and Dave Stewart, guitarist, used to be a couple around this time. She's a powerhouse vocalist. They had many hits. As mentioned awhile back please react to, "Love is a stranger", and "Right by your side". Also her duet with Aretha Franklin, Sisters are doing it for themselves. The 80s sisterhood theme!
Walking on broken glass.
I so loved that. I'm 70 years old, and I started dancing along JUST LIKE YOU young pups! It was like my camera was on and you were seeing me! SO FUN!
LOVE how much Jordan liked this song!! Next Annie Lennox song: “WHY” 💎
Oh yes!
YES!!!!
Why? by Annie Lennox is terrific and moving. Also why not try 10,000 Maniacs What's the Matter Here or Like the Weather featuring the sublime Natalie Merchant?
COMPLETELY AGREE... "WHY" is ICONIC... sorry to write in caps LOL
"Why" is a phenomenal song.
Yes! I love Natalie!😁
Thumbs up for Natalie, either from her solo career or with 10,000 Maniacs.
I was thinking of suggesting Natalie for Female Friday but not sure which song to choose!
I loved her when Annie was in The Tourists pre Eurythmics, then this video came out & completely blew my mind. I've adored her in all her musical incarnations ever since ♥️
You guys DEFINITELY need to do her duet with Aretha Franklin for Female Friday, 'Sisters are Doin' It For Themselves.' Absolutely SLAPS.
YES !!!!
ABSOLUTELY
Yes!’
Yes, I just requested Would I lie to you for Female Friday but this is a great one too
Oh oh and Beethoven is another one to consider, one of the most kick arse tracks in my humble opinion
Anne is like a female Bowie or Freddy Mercury -- chimerical, always trying something new, with an amazing voice. One of these Female Fridays, you might want to try "Wonder" by Natalie Merchant.
None taken.
50 Exotic Word Points to Gryffindor for 'Chimerical'. Well done, Tom :-D
Yes, absolutely love Natalie Merchant!!! Would also suggest "Carnival" in addition to "Wonder". Great suggestion!
Definitely one of the best voices out there!!!
As a kid who graduated high school in 1984, Annie Lennox was beyond amazing. She may not have started the "Androgynous movement", but she was the one who brought it to American kids. She challenged the ideas of what women were supposed to look like at the time.
LISA STANSFIELD - "Been AROUND THE WORLD" - gorgeous and talented. SADE - another talent.
And Corinne Bailey Rae.....
Sade is one of the smoothest and classiest ladies around. Her voice is so haunting.
YES LISA STANSFIELD!!!!
This and this!
I would recommend "There Must Be an Angel" too. haunting melody and her voice is literally angelic
I second this, her vocal chops are crazy in that song.
Defo, I came here to say the same thing. Annie has a totally different look in that video.
Now we're talking. Can't decide if it's my favorite compared to 'Stay By Me'?
The HArmonica is play it by Steve Wonder
Or Walking on Broken Glass for sheer amusement value in the video!
Annie Lennox’s first solo record, Diva, is the bomb! Another great Eurythmics tune is Here Comes the
Rain Again.
Annie has one of the best voices ever.
Her voice is pure and iconic and with a flawless range. Some brave souls have tried to cover her songs and in my opinion just can't compare. The only ones that 'succeed' are when they come out with a completely new arrangement and don't even attempt to replicate her sound. My opinion.
This was groundbreaking when it came out...not just the music but also how Annie presented herself...in the early 80's women's hair was still in the Farrah Fawcett feathering...
not really... especially in the New Wave genre, hair was anything but conventional.
Yep, I remember seeing this video on MTV and being blown away by both the music and Annie's look.
@@parissimons6385 or the rest of the distaff "Bromley Contingent" which included William Broad's girlfriend/baby mum and the rest...
Other great songs from them: Here comes the rain again, Would I li to you, Who’s that girl…so many,!
My name is Kathi. I'm Nathan's grandmother. I'm 70. You two are incredible! I've never subscribed to anything before I found you. You will have beautiful, smart and talented babies. I've been binge watching you for two days. I love Female Friday. Long may you wave.
Annie Lennox's Walking on Broken Glass is worth a watch and reaction. Cheers from the Jersey Shore
This is why those of us who were there when MTV launched would sit watching videos for hours even if the music wasn’t our favorite.
Absolutely
she hit us like a mack truck- the voice and the style- like NOTHING else of its time.
Ironic that you mentioned a Marilyn Manson look since he did a fairly decent cover of the song...in his style of course. For more of this lady you should check out Missionary Man (I think that's the title)
His cover is very good.
PJ Harvey: "Down by the Water."
It's creepy, haunting, tells a story, and her voice is so different. Just something for your ears to soak in.
good call
You can't possibly be serious with this comment. CocoRosie - Lemonade just begins to scratch the surface of wierd and unusual. I'd only bring up CocoRosie to gage if I need to back off or hit the gas. What you got next for unusual? Kate Bush???
Damn good suggestion :)
'No Girl So Sweet' as well - calm, distorted and then that yell. Anything from PJ is awesome - loved Is This Desire - entire album was surreal . . .
The live version is excellent too.
I've always loved both "Would I lie to you?" and "Walking on broken glass".
I was a teenager when this came out and it blew my mind! I still love it.
Another great song by Eurythmics is "Would I Lie to You?"
"Don't Go" by Yaz featuring the amazing Alison Moyet is another Synth-Pop classic.
I second Quarterflash! That song is so cool to try to sing along to!
Plus, you can't turn down a female lead who plays the sax...
*Yazoo
Would I lie to you is Jammin!!! Love that song. Listen to her cover of Whiter Shade of Pale.
The Only Way Is Up.
AWESOME! NEXT UP:
WALKING ON BROKEN GLASS
WHY
WOULD I LIE TO YOU!
One of their BIGGEST HITS was LOVE IS A STRANGER. You have to hear it!
My favourite Eurythmics song ❤
A similar group for Female Friday would be Alison Moyet of Yazoo - a few great songs are Situation, and Don't Go (both of these were standards in early 90's dance clubs) or Only You (soft and melodic). Alison has a killer voice, and Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode/Erasure does some of his best work as a vanguard of synth-pop.
Oh yes, Yaz was pne of !y favorite bands in high school!
I would recommend "There Must Be an Angel" too. Haunting melody and her voice is literally angelic (into the Song a big surprise !)
"Who's That Girl" or "Love Is A Stranger" needs to go on your lists for Female Fridays!
For more Eurythmics, I suggest "Would I Lie To You?" (my fave) and "Here Comes the Rain Again."
"Sweet dreams are made of cheese.
Who am I to dis a bree..."
Seriously, though - this was their first big hit.

Yes, she has so many good songs to choose from. One of the best!
Blue bayou and tracks of my tears
Linda was good, but I believe Pat Benatar got her beat.
This song never gets old because it’s so true! Another great British group! The Eurythmics were one of the best groups of the eighties! Annie’s voice is amazing and she went on to have a successful solo career! ❤️❤️
"Would I Lie To You" will blow your minds. Guaranteed banger with surprises you will love.
She has an incredible voice. And a multifaced artist in all that she does. With each look she becomes someone new. Very much like David Bowie.
She did a live "Under Pressure" with Bowie after Freddy Mercury had passed.
I can recommend two of their songs as starters: "Listen To Your Heart" and "The Look."
D.H.T. did a fantastic cover of "Listen To Your Heart" about 15 years ago.
I have a feeling it's a top song for most people around in the 80s :)
80's music kicks everything else out of the park !!!
Watching this video ..takes me back to that time and place..and it triggers other memories in that moment..
I second this. Great song!
Yes. This was definitely one of my favorites growing up!
This song and Here Comes the Rain Again blew everyone's minds when it came out. The perfect MTV songs. It's hilarious that you mentioned Marilyn Manson because he does an awesome cover of this.
‘No more I loved you’s’ is just beautiful!
"Here Comes The Rain Again"
BTW, Marilyn Manson actually covered this song.
Keep it up. ❤️
Yes, Stevie Nicks!!!
Another female vocalist worth a listen is Amy Mann of Til Tuesday and the song Voices Carry is quite haunting and she owns it! If you haven't already heard it!
"I hate to pause this early....(yet I do it on EVERY video)" LOL!
