Stacy is NOT a doctor and according to her linkedin, has no formal training in animal nutrition. Please consult a real veterinarian before changing your dog’s diet to something that will most likely be deficient in more than a few vitamins and minerals.
LooooL
A high proportion of liver in the diet can result in vitamin A toxicity. I am at vet school and our nutrition teacher showed us a case where a cats bones had fused in its legs and the rest of its bones were deteriorating due to it being on a liver only diet. Please consult a veterinarian or pet nutritionist before making your own pet food. Packets of pet food can be lower in meat and higher in starch if it is cheap but it is still balanced properly by professionals to be used as a daily feed. If you have concerns take your dog food packet to your vet to ask if it is well balanced and nutritious.
Could you provide a link to her LinkedIn?
Yikes. To make things worse the entire basis of this episode was based on her recommendations alone and without regard for the actual dog's medical history.
as a vet student myself one of the best real food diet is the BARF diet. it stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. it is basically %10 liver %10other organs %10 bones and %70 meat. but if you want to change your dogs diet go ask your veterinarian. he'll examine your dog and give you advices.
as a vet student myself i really wish the consultant was an actual boarded veterinary nutritionist, but if that were the case i guess you couldn't have made this episode because NO ACVN certified vet will sign off on a homemade diets like this, and for good reason. kibbles are specifically and painstakingly formulated to be reliably BALANCED sources of every nutrient, micro and macro, that pets need. they are not evil, heartless, disgusting, "unnatural," or cruel to feed, and vets only recommend them because they are by far the safest and best way to meet the nutritional needs of your pets. please if you are considering a change in diet CONSULT AN ACTUAL DVM BEFOREHAND. if you are dead set on cooking your pet's meals then yes it CAN be done but it is HARD and still requires an involved, working relationship with a veterinarian and preferably licensed/boarded veterinary nutritionist. these people do not go to school for 8 years and accumulate hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt to lie to you. they want to help you. please listen to them.
Exactly, i was a bit weirded out by how they implied that dry dog food is bad and evil, my aunt is a vet and she always suggest dry food, and if you wanna cook for your dog, consult a vet nutritionist

i'm glad this comment is being received as positively as it is! there is/are a lot of misinformation/misleading half-truths out there that cause good and well-meaning people to make less-than-ideal choices for their pets' health. our job as vets and veterinary professionals is to support and educate our clients without passing judgement! i am certain no one at BA made this video in any kind of bad faith but i am disappointed that it plays a role in furthering harmful ideas about pet nutrition.

Did you try them with the ;marshmellow and butter and heavy cream maybe trick?
Im floored that a canine nutritionist being the expert on a show didn't even mention all the supplements that need to be added. The different levels of this and that. This for sure could've been a longer video. Doing stuff like meatballs is a great idea as like a treat sort of thing. I enjoyed this episode, and tuna, but if they wanted to do it with the set up of 'you can make your pets food yourself AND it's better than kibble' they really should've gone into it more.
I so agree with this!!! Totally ok as a snack but totally not comprehensive enough if they want to educate people on adding fresh foods to their dogs diet!
what i do is i give my dog a little less the second meal of the day.. and supplement with some dinner leftovers.. like a piece of meat.. an egg.. some beans.. some pasta.. gravy.. anything on hand that isnt too spicy.. and not too much so she doesnt get fat.. in my opinion its always better to not give the same food everyday.. exept kibble in the mornign and steamed dogfood in evening witch she always gets.. (its also not good to give them other dog food every week).
@@larsvegas1505 that's really unbalanced. and really dangerous in the long run
@@micahhumdinger7473 there is canine nutritionists out there with a veterinary background - a normal vet is not specialised in nutrition so not really the right person to ask. People should look for a veterinary canine nutritionist. You wouldn't ask your GP to make a mealplan for your toddler right? They might have some basic knowledge, but not in depth.
I came here to comment the exact same thing! I wish they had really gotten into how complicated it can be like in one of Claire's GourmetMakes videos... because it makes you appreciate how talented these chefs are to make it in a normal kitchen! But blanket statements about "studies show" and not including that nutritionist's credentials and the precise recipe developed by a board-certified animal nutritionist is so risky!
Husband: This is going to be a mess later.
Molly: Out of her... butt?
we need follow up info, was it or was it not ... ummm how to tag ba?
technically shouldn't except for its not her usual diet. maybe a few days or a week of getting used to it, then she should be ok i would think.
Yeah switching diets always does that for everyond you're changing the gut microbiome
@@kjcorder Actually should - as in the content of liver in the meatballs is way too high for a little dog like that and should only make up 5% of the daily food content. More and she will likely face gastro upset :)
@@dingoatemyticket7476 Very true. My Mom (a dog and cat Veterinarian and Veterinary Internist) and I watch BA together whenever I visit, and she had 2 main things to say about the video:
1) Thank god the nutritionist wasn't one of those crazy people who think dogs should eat raw steak and nothing else, the animals they would have caught in wild would have grains and the like in their stomachs, which they also eat.
2) That ratio of liver to other meats is way too high. She will be a "runny pup" tomorrow.
molly: do I have to eat dog food today?
stacy: you can
molly: _but do I have to?_
evandl knowing these producers, a FAIR question
I died laughing when she asks that question
My animal nutrition course at uni told us that homemade diets often leads to nutritional deficiencies in animals, so if you do this you have to be very careful and do your research. At the very least I would supplement with kibble.
Those homemade meatballs, pasta, rice ect, though delicious, are soft so the dog could end up with pretty bad dental disease. So if you do this homemade diet I’d recommend having a good dental care routine for your dog too.
This meal is way too heavy in plants for a carnivore like a dog. And like you said, no added supplements, and no calcium at all. Raw bones are great dental cleaners otherwise the good old doggy toothbrush. Kibble arent good for the teeth either since carbs get stuck on the teeth and if not getting any bones, itll develop into plaque.
@@swedishdogs3327 Dogs are in fact omnivores. They require a good amount of vegetables in their daily diet. If you're making homemade dog food, supplements are pretty necessary to ensure the proper amount of nutrients. Bones also aren't that great, since there's the choke risk and if the bone is too hard it might damage their teeth.
Julia Baraitar hey im getting a puppy and idk why but theres not much access to information on dog nutrition. Could you tell me if giving the puppy both wet and dry food is good? Or should i make or give her smth else and what would have to be included in those meals? Like alot of protein or alot of calcium etctec?

This would have been a great episode if the "expert" doctor was actually certified, or had, I don't know... ANY formal training in animal nutrition? Stuff like this is why people are leery about "new age hipster BS," because most of the time, that's exactly what it is.
Buy your pet high quality pet food, don't skimp out, but make sure you're buying them food specifically designed for your animal.
In the same way you wouldn't feed your dog meal worms, or your hamster fish food, human food lacks nutrients and vitamins that are extremely important to dogs. There's a reason these companies spend multiple millions of dollars researching and developing food that fills these requirements.
Just coming here to state that you should talk to your vet about dog food brands that they recommend. There are certain brands that do far more research than others and have good evidence behind them.
If you don't feel like going to your vet or don't have one. The one particular food that my vet recommended highly is Hills science diet. It's expensive, but its everything your doggo needs.

Molly,
You shouldn’t feel bad about giving your dog dog food. It’s made for dogs. That’s the point. It’s made to be nutritious and healthy and should have all good ingredients and supplements to keep your dog in the best shape possible.
True - sort of. Not all dog food is created equal, and it's important to do your research on what you're feeding to your pets!
Shari Kay True, but if she’s willing to go all out to make dog food because she thinks it’s the best option, I’m assuming she did at least a little research on which food to feed Tuna or at least asked the vet.
There are loads of articles and studies showing certain brands of dog foods causing cancer or a higher risk of heart disease.
@Tony Orellana Human food is also regulated, but I'm not about to switch my diet to being 100% the cheapest ready meals I can find. Cheap pet food is adequate but that doesn't mean you can't do better. Having said that, I absolutely agree with your advice to consult an actual veterinarian.
@@beeble2003 Human food is regulated, but it's not feed. We don't have an all-purpose, fully balanced concentrate to eat (maybe astronauts do). Incomparable, not to mention we'd get bored of it very fast and people want that freedom.

IF YOU MAKE YOUR OWN DOG FOOD: Be careful what vegetables and spices you use. Not everything is "pet friendly". Pepper (both hot peppers and peppercorns), Garlic, Onion, are some of the things that are bad for both dogs and cats. Also, the foods we eat can be too fatty for our dogs and cats, so really moderate the usage of oils and fats. (Cats are better at handling oils than dog.
Which is a really weird thing. Why would descendants of wolves not be able to digest normal meat things like fat?
Senna Augustus fats in meat and naturally in veggies are different than the oils we add to food.
Just buy good quality pet food. Professionals know better than average pet owners.
@@SennaAugustus I remember reading that dogs have evolved to digest carbs because it is such a large part of OUR diets. The carb content in a wolves diet is almost nil and a steady diet of human food would probably kill a wolf pretty quickly. IIRC, offal is the first thing eaten by wild canids because it has the highest mineral/nutrient content per gram. Muscles are mostly protein. Fats require specialised compounds to digest in large quantities (digestive bile is a fat emulsifier) and not every animal makes enough for a human diet.
@@MilwaukeeWoman eh, knowing what your pet can and can't eat still benefit a pet owner. And vets (that i know at the very least) has recommended me and my family to give our dogs some "real" food once in a while, heck one even gave me a recipe for a simple dog food involving homemade pumpkin puree, and stock gelatin that you can keep in the freezer for months.
