    What a fantastic idea. I have been on the hunt for some sort of something similar that can take the size of posts we use, up to 10-12” on the big side. Without using 20 or 30 gallons of oil. Painting the oil on is such a drag.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому

      Yeah, 10-12” would need a bigger co gained for sure. Maybe if you could rig a kinda pivoting arm with a pulley so you could lift the post in and out. Not sure how heavy those would be but I’d imagine pretty darn heavy 😅

    I had a coworker that had a vat that he'd fill will old motor oil and soaked his fence post and rails for all his horse pastures. Guys at work would bring they're old motor oil regularly. He also soaked his horses hooves in this. He did part time ferrier work. Wood is cellulose, like a sponge so the drier it is before you soak it the better. Nice welding 👍

    Get video and project. Really fits into my Reduce, reuse, recycle mentality. I agree with your little comment about RECYCLING. In San Diego we have a specific list of what can go in which containers (trash/greens/recycle) but no real follow up about the end results. I do have a what if question though. If you needed to treat many posts would it work it you made a longer tube and then added a vacuum pump to drop the pressure. After a point you would release the pressure and the oil would get sucked into the post. I see resin guys doing that all the time to work on their stuff. Again, not something that you have a need of but your project made it point into my head. Thanks again for sharing and have a safe and happy Labor Dat weekend!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому

      Thank you! It’s been one of those “that’d be kinda neat to make” kinda projects.
      And yeah, the recycling thing sadly is more a ‘feel good’ versus actually making a difference with most of what folks put in the recycling bins. Aluminum is by far the best return on actually getting recycled. But most materials end up getting lumped in with the trash. And oil, is sadly a similar story. Now there are plants that do clean, reuse it and /or add it into refining processes. But that is largely dependent on location. Obviously some areas are able to make better use of it than others.
      But for me, I don’t mind having a few gallons on hand for these kinds of projects😁
      Now for your vacuum thoughts…. That would definitely speed the process a lot. I have thought about making one for wood resin as I’d like to make a couple recurve bow risers eventually. But as my list of future projects grows longer…. So does my time table 🤪

    Cool project Joe! It would have been neat if you'd ran a test to see how increasing the soak time affects depth of penetration into the 4X4. i.e. 1 hour soak gets a depth of penetration of 1/8 inch... 3 hour soak gets penetration of 1/2 inch, etc. I would think that the more penetration would provide more and longer protection from rot. 🙂

I did a research paper years ago on the CPI (consumer price index) and was shocked to find how much it is manipulated to skew stats. All so they can report a low inflation rate over a very small month to month period to give the impression of controlled inflation. When in reality it is MUCH higher if those folks would look at the same indexed numbers over 5,10 and 20 year periods.

      @@homesteadonomics There is branch of russian-speaking philosophers, who stand strong against too much liberty in economy.
      The points are:
      1) without regulations some companies tends to produce products (from shoes to cars) with intentionally limited lifetime. In longrun it leads to the migration of wealth/power from the so called "working class" to those who own companies. This is because in longrun the so called "working class" tends to loose everything they bought earier. But those who control the production facilities tend to have more sophisticated and powerful facilities (including the ability to better control the lifecycle).
      It makes the process of working for salary meaningless, because in longrun you will have nothing (unless you didn't invested your income to something tangible).
      2) those companies who do "dirty tricks" tend to grow faster/bigger and displace or absorb companies that don't do the ones. Micro$oft is a good (but not the only) example.
      3) price is a measure of deficit. In 'normal' (according to a certain philosophy) economy the prices across time must become lower. Because in 'normal' economy we are producing some stuff to satisfy the needs. But if we don't satisfy the needs, then what we are working for? Someone said: "We are working/producing more stuff/new type of things to match the higher standard of living". But is this what we are living for? To produce and consume more stuff (or more sophisticated stuff)? I don't thing so.
      Deep understanding of those problems should lead to a different type of understanding of everything. From personal motivation to politics and history.

    This was a funny project but very functional. To have the oil the same height on, say 20 posts, would a sight glass have been the answer? No answer is needed for this question: What did the first ounce of gold cost you 20 years ago and what did your most recent ounce of gold cost? The price of gold cannot always go up and if the price of gold goes down, it could be disastrous. Have good days!

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому +1

      For keeping the top part level looking…..if leaving unpainted you could just do a quick spay paint line to give it the ‘look’ and then just eye ball it for the area below. But a level sight glass or clear hose level indicator would work.
      Now for the metals question. You gotta remember that I said that they have “always held their value” since the beginning of recorded history. The price will and always does fluctuate, in comparison to fiat currency. But the most important thing to gauge value is if that price of silver or gold can purchase the same allotment of goods or services as it did say 25, 50 or 100 years ago. Take for instance pre-1964 quarters being about 90% silver at that time. And it equates in rough math to about 1/4ounce of silver(very approx. for easy math). So when you look at what a quarter could buy you in 1950 versus what a quarter ounce of silver today, it is roughly equivalent. BUT what a US dollar could buy you in 1950 versus what it could buy you today is VASTLY different.
      Now as to what I first bought gold/silver at versus what most recently bought them at. My first gold purchase was two 1/2 ounces at just over $300/ounce in 2002 I believe. And I bought probably 20 silver eagles at the same time for about $7-8 an ounce if I remember correctly. I think it was as low as $5-6 an ounce earlier in that year. But I bought high.
      Now must recently I purchased silver rounds at $26/ounce in 2023 and I think the last gold I purchased was for a 1/4 ounce in 2020/21 when the piece was around $1600/ounce or so.
      Needless to say, I’m much more of a silver bug than a gold one.
      And the reason for this is due to the historic ration of silver to gold and how much of silver has been lost to industrial ussage… solar panels, electronics, military and aviation equipment. So the upside potential is far higher in silver than in gold.
      But with all that said, it’s important to remember that I’m not investing in metals to ‘make’ money, but rather to ‘maintain’ the value of my wealth while our fiat currencies devalue from the irresponsible expansion of the money supply and the inflation that follows.
      Hope that answered your question and was at least a little bit clearer than mud🤪

    My Grandpa use 50/50 used motor oil and diesel and paint it on whole post except bottom end. Because when it raining it will go through to the bottom end and release water out at the bottom end. Otherwise if paint at the bottom end will hold the rain water like a cup. That will rotten the wood.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому +1

      Yes, that would certainly allow for better soaking of the oil into the post. As for the whole thing….that would definitely be superior to just the bottom. No air quotes needed around waste oil. It is indeed recycled, reused, refined or burned so has a second life. You are giving it a second life as well. Discouraging recycling of waste oil means it’s just gonna be dumped on the ground as it was in the past polluting our groundwater/surface waters.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому

      That’s not what I said at all. But the reality is that depending on your location, oil recycling and reuse is vastly different. I have learned this first hand from talking to the people at my county recycling center. Some is indeed recycling into industrial oil derivatives and some makes a trip to refineries…. And much is allowed to be wasted or disposed of within specialty containments.
      So please do not imply that I’m discouraging the reuse and or recycling of oil. When this video is actually about recycling and reusing something that I have on hand.
      What I was pointing out is that many recycling services misrepresent how much and how efficiently various recyclables get recycled.

      @@Knight805yes, I DO really like the aspect of the decentralized nature of it. Which is why I got into some…haha
      But I still worry about the ‘connectivity required’ for use, transactions, etc,. Which is why I do lean towards being a silver/gold bug🤪
      But I’ll still keep what I got just for the diversity of investment

      Well, like anything there is more to the story than what is officially reported. You have to check www.bls.gov at the original numbers versus the ‘revisions’ that come 6-9 months later. The official narrative is that we are somewhere around 2% in a month to last years month in comparison. But that is based on the initial report and *not* the revised report. If you factor that in you will see an actuality much higher inflation.
      Now please don’t take this as me arguing…haha… if which I always want to take the respectful approach. But I did a research paper on the CPI in college and found that every administration adjusts (aka manipulates) the price inputs to create a more favorable view of the economy. Meaning that true inflation numbers are virtually never accurately reported. Unless of course, a person factors in same goods/commodities/prices from an earlier time in history and not the ‘currently’ accepted inputs.
      So with that said, you can almost never trust any number that comes out of government reports until the revisions have taken place. And also comparing like for like.
      And to be fair, every administration since Carter has don’t this extensively…. Yes, both Trump and Biden have done this too.
      So anyways, I’d encourage you to do a deeper dive and I think you’ll see some different things.
      And as for the video. Thank you for watching 😊🙏

      @@homesteadonomics There are always revisions as more data is factored in, but the rate has declined to a third of what is was over two years ago, which is a trend. Cost-saving advice is always welcome, I'm merely providing a mild rebuttal to "...and given the economic times we find ourselves living in with the ever-increasing inflation..." (11:00) Cheers!
