  • The Sunken Greenhouse Project is back with some new upgrades. In the video I'll show a new mortared stone retaining wall, a new planting area, and two new ventilation upgrades that are operated by way of cables and some counter weights. .... and yes, I'll also talk about why I don't have it all planted out, which has become something of a theme with this project..... haha ;)
    Thanks for watching and please let me know if you have any questions!

      Now that is so awesome to hear! I build things like this for a couple reasons….First is simply because it’s something I’m interested in and think could be a benefit to our property…. But also, with regard to the videos, is to inspire others! So thank YOU for letting me know that!😊🙏

    This is so lovely, and inpspiring.
    Just a side note: since your tomatoes are ahead indoors, you could take cuttings from them, water them in the soil next to them, and when they sprout roots, transplant them when the outdoors is ready, and you can essentially double this year’s tomato crop 😉

      @ToddLarsen 2 місяці тому +1

      @homesteadonomics Our build site is a 40 ft square 10 ft deep and our greenhouse will be a 36x 36 ft square and we planed out having 10 4x8 aquaponics growbeds and a few smaller sized ones with a 1,200 gallon fish tank and 2 275 gallon sump tanks. I think our house build might wind up being a small tent after this monster build.
      I am building 8ft gabions that are 1 to 2ft deep to hold the earth back, haven't decided just yet on the depth.
      After I'm done with our leach field, I'm going full speed ahead on our "geothermal" greenhouse build and will share all of my mistakes on my channel.

      Yes, I have. I ran it around in my head for the last couple years and finally acknowledged what I always suspected. That the piping size, depth, material and length weren’t going to truly do what I needed them to do. So I capped the end of the run and will instead focus on building a shade structure that can be moved in place during those borderline times.
      But atleast my hand digging skills were improved for those sections of pipe that will be buried in the ground for years to come 🤪

    I think when it comes to gardening showing a demonstration is a good idea. Your project does seem interesting, and I would have liked to watch how you built your greenhouse.
    Currently I am trying to grow lettuce. I was able to make several plants sprout fairly quickly, but I don't remember what I did to make it sprout, so fast. I am still experimenting, so I can try to hopefully figure out what I did to make my lettuce sprout, so fast.

But I am planning the additional shade project to have a moveable panel with shade cloth on it.

      Thank you very much! Regarding rainwater…..in the original build I did. But after a hail storm that damaged several of the panels I never got around to re building the custom gutters I had made. But eventually 😀👍

    Have you ever discussed offgrid solar systems?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому

      No, I have not. I’m still on the grid for power. It’s always been a goal to be fully off grid. But my firefighter salary and the little I make from these videos won’t allow an investment like that. Unless I could get it sponsored or something like that.
      Some areas offer rebates but u fortunately the people who coordinate those programs must not like us ‘rural folk’ as we always seem to be locked out of any of it 😉

    When it rains, I assume the rain runs inside from the steps. How does it drain and is flooding an issue for you?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому +1

      No, flooding is not an issue. We do get a small bit of water just inside the door but never a puddle. Just little bits from the stairs. The rest of the ground is graded to slope away from the structure.
      As for drainage that small amount that makes it way from the stairs eventually just soaks into the ground.
      It does seem a bit foreign to folks in areas where ponds are common and water tables are high. But here, even if we do get a lot of rain during monsoons, eventually it will percolate into the ground and with very deep water tables it cannot build up to create that issue.

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому

      Sure could. There was a place in the Phoenix area several years ago that did just that…. They even kept water in the deep end and raised tilapia while gardening in the shallow end

    I understand the sink in the ground greenhouse concept, but I'm a little confused. A) Why is one side of the roof not transparent - restricted sun access? B) ground provides stable temperatures, but since the walls are buried in the ground - Sun and light does not come through the walls. So the temperature that the Sun would have provided from the transparent walls above the ground would compensate for the temperature that the ground provides.? Is it wish wash?
    Also most of the plants do like sunlight. Am I missing anything?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому +1

      The original build had polycarbonate on both sides of the roof. But after a bad hail storm I had to replace many of the panels and decided that the north side did not need transparent panels since the seasons I use it, the sun is at an angle and it would have been unnecessary.
      And to your other point…. The angle of the sun still hits almost all for the growing spaces directly at some point.

    why did you build a greenhouse in a hollow? does it help keep the temperature easier?

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому

      Yes as it allows the plants to be nearer to the earth and the part dug in serves as a heat sink to hold heat longer throughout the night.

    What keeps it from filling up with water when it rains

    • @homesteadonomics
      @homesteadonomics  2 місяці тому +1

      Only a small bit of water comes in the stairs. The rest of the ground actually slopes away from the greenhouse. So usually just a small wet spot just inside the door is all we get
